Today marks five years since the devastating Christchurch mosque shootings, and Canterbury's Muslim community will gather for its largest ever commemoration. 51 worshippers were killed after a gunman opened fire at Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre on March the 15th, 2019. This year's anniversary falls on Jumu'ah - the mandatory Islamic Friday prayer. It was that occasion five years ago which the terrorist targeted. It also falls in the holy month of Ramadan. For those left behind, the memory is hard to erase but some say they have overcome survivor's guilt to live a more meaningful life.         First Up producer Mahvash Ikram went to meet three men who were at Al Noor mosque at the time of the attacks.

Episode Notes An experienced Human Resources professional and a dedicated Art Enthusiast, I am the Director, Gurukul Studios. I spearhead all the Projects at Gurukul. I bring to the table, strong corporate and business experience of aviation industry with companies like Cathay Pacific and Emirates. At Gurukul, I have established distinct methodologies and fair business practices with a vision to be a culturally rooted yet progressive dance organisation! It is currently one of the leading Indian classical dance academy in the Middle East with branches in India and Switzerland. I have made path-breaking forays into the Dubai Academia and taken Gurukul Art Outreach Programs to several academic and art forums. Gurukul Dubai, works closely with GEMS Modern Academy and other leading schools in the region. As a conscious decision of our Corporate Social Responsibility policy, we worked with specially abled students on SNF, Dubai and Al Noor. Gurukul Dubai was established by Pali Chandra and me, in 2007. We provide quality and classical dance education to more than 350 students in Dubai, and have started operations in Zurich and Bangalore (India). We are true practitioners of Indian Classical Dance syllabus of ISTD, UK , and strongly believe, that internationally it is one of the the most compatible syllabi. We have been holding ISTD exams annually since 2012 and have enabled and supported approximately 74 in 2012, 91 in 2013, 128 in 2014, 127 in 2015,165 in 2016 and 205 in 2017. Whilst the numbers speak of the popularity and acceptance of the syllabus through us, we at Gurukul have ensured quality education and hence the results. We adhere to the syllabus guidelines for all levels from CEP to Grade 6, with a focus on ISTD safe dance practices. Many workshops by visiting faculty have been organised by Gurukul to help maintain standards. Some of my successful projects include the 3 days Kathak Festival, Sufi Noor in 2009 and 2012, Five Elements, (2010) Navarasa (2013), Naach – 100 Years of Bollywood (2014), Taalmala (2016), Navinayika (2015), Lasya (2018), Parampara - an annual event of Gurukul wherein we take our students from all our centres to India - to learn from the maestros, to name just a few. My past assignments include those with the Emirates Group as Human Resource Specialist, Commercial Division, Dubai and Cathay Pacific Airways, Vancouver/Canada and Hong Kong.A people's person at heart, a mentor and an executive decision maker, I worked hard to make Gurukul a well recognised centre for ISTD education and a place for dance lovers to connect with. I must confess that this could not have been done without the artistic guidance of Pali Chandra and my pro-active and committed facilitators and admin teams.! India and specially, the City of Bangalore, holds immense potential for dance education based on ISTD syllabus. With the very first studio that opened last month (December 2017) in one of the most centrally located communities on Wood Street, off Brigade Road, I can clearly visualise reach of our programs with ISTD at its heart ! As a child I had learnt kathak dance for 7 years under the able guidance of Guru Vikram Singhe and am currently being trained under Pali Chandra for Vocational Course of ISTD.

It could have been mistaken for a graduation ceremony.Proud parents, welcome hugs, long embraces. Small groups standing around chatting, laughing. Mewling infants hoisted onto shoulders. But take a closer look. The bursts of laughter are cut off short. Sudden tears wiped away. Many people hobbling on crutches, bandages over recent surgeries, latest rounds of treatment. Deep shrapnel setting off the security wands, overseen by troops of armed police.Holding a March 15, 2019 Christchurch terror attacks anniversary memorial event was not a consensus decision. Many families, gunshot victims, survivors recoiled at reliving the tragedy which, two years on, haunts them every day. Some preferred to mark it silently during Friday prayer at Al Noor and Linwood mosques – the scenes of New Zealand's worst mass shooting.Others, like New Zealand's most prominent Muslim Sonny Bill Williams, say they remember the fallen every day. As Muslims, they pray five times a day and the fallen are always in their thoughts. But for those who attended yesterday's "We are one" national remembrance service in Christchurch – about 700 victims and families, dignitaries including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and about 150 members of the public, it felt like the right thing to do."Two years have passed by, we gather here to remember the 51 beautiful souls," said Kiran Munir whose husband Haroon Mahmood was killed in the attack. The grief and pain filled the cavernous Christchurch Arena."The ripples of sorrow and grief we endure may never subside - but we have faith," said a stoic Maha Elmadani whose beloved "baba" Ali Elmadani was also murdered two years ago tomorrow. Those who died in the attacks had their names read aloud while their photographs filled a big screen. They were wearing All Blacks jerseys and caps, posing for happy holiday snaps and described as loving fathers, mothers, sons, daughters. Children. Filial. Pious. Humble. Loving. Loved.Tears flowed.Survivor Temel Atacocugu - who was shot nine times on the day – broke down recalling the bloody aftermath of the massacre at Al Noor.He described how a man sat beside him cradling his small son."The paramedics told him that his son was dead … there was nothing they could do for him," Atacocugu said, breaking down in tears."Suddenly my own pain felt insignificant, my heart wept for them."I still go to Al Noor each week for prayers and I see that father with a big smile on his face - he is a remarkable man."Members of the public also wept as he spoke, offering tissues and cuddles of comfort."We grieve for you all, we cry," said Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy who also acknowledged the survivors, the wounded, those who bore witness, first responders and the two police officers who prevented the gunman taking any more lives when they arrested him."There can be no us and them, there can only be we - together we shine a light into the darkness, together our children learn that kindness and decency ... are not the monopoly of any ethnicity."After the 90-minute service, they walked out holding hands, colourful headscarves fluttering in the blustery easterly, which brought sounds from the neighbouring Crusaders rugby home stadium. With heads high, they felt better, at least momentarily, for having shared their painful memories and grief with others who know exactly how tough the past two years have been, and how tough the future is going to be.text by Kurt Bayer, NZ Herald
