The trainer of the horse that won the 2025 Kentucky Derby (May 3, 2025) is originally from Mobridge, SD. In the fifth (top secret) episode of Bloomberg Businessweek’s new podcast Everybody’s Business, hosts Max Chafkin and Stacey Vanek Smith look the first 104 days of the Trump administration--particularly the last 4. Businessweek editor Brad Stone joins to discuss Amazon's face-off with Trump, the GDP's downturn and the resignation of Mike Waltz. Then David Papadopoulos joins from the sidelines of the Kentucky Derby, where he explains why betting on the races is softening and why retirement is often more lucrative for horses than running (and what a retirement it is!). Finally, as the underrated story of the week, Stacey and Max discuss the rise of new media in the White House press corp, including one influencer who famously thought the moon had disappeared after she didn't see it for several days.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

While Prof Madeleine Campbell was in our virtual studio we took the opportunity to record a second episode with her - this one is about the ethical aspects of horse breeding (her previous episode, Ethical Equestrianism, is definitely worth a listen). Without breeding, horse sport would not exist, but ethical consideration has been lacking. Are we breeding the right horses, at the right time, in the right way? Prof Campbell is a registered specialist in equine reproduction, a horse breeder and also a veterinary ethicist (she is Professor of Veterinary Ethics at the University of Nottingham) so she is uniquely qualified to discuss this sometimes controversial topic. We discuss natural cover, whether applying a limit to the number of mares bred to a stallion should be considered, and potential ethical and welfare issues involved in Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) in horses. Some of Maddy's publications in this area include: Campbell M. (2014) Does the current regulation of assisted reproductive techniques in the UK safeguard animal welfare? Animal Welfare. 23(1):109-118. doi:10.7120/09627286.23.1.109 Campbell, M. L. H., & Sandøe, P. (2015). Welfare in horse breeding. Veterinary Record, 176(17), 436-440. Campbell, M. L. (2021). Horse breeding can look real glamourous but for those of us who have tried it, we know that there are a lot of challenges involved. Death, injury, illness, dissapointment and waiting can be a very real part of the journey. And when that happens it can be really tough. Mentally and financially. We hope this conversation will help lighten the mental load. Shelby and her family have been breeding horses for years, at one point having over 100 mares on pasture. She has amazing insight into what it takes to raise horses. Brad and I have been breeding horses for 15 years now and have also had our fair share of experience with both the fun times and the struggles. In this episode we shed some light on common (and some not so common) but unfortunate challenges you may come across when raising horses. When those things occur it can be easy to get hard on ourselves, blame ourselves, feel overwhelming guilt and frustration. Although it's important to keep learning and improving your system, no matter how much you try, there will be times when nature takes over and horses come up open or injured, or ill. And it's important to keep reminding yourself that it's part of the process and doesn't mean that your failing or not cut out for it. Keep your head up, focus on the good and get after it. Breeding horses is magic. ICSI the How, What, When, and Why with Dr. Charlie ScogginDescription: Theriogenologist Dr. Charlie Scoggin talks about all things ICSI. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, is an in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. This advanced reproductive technique is useful when a mare has problems that prevent her conceiving and carrying a foal, and when semen is in limited supply or has fertility issues. Preservation and continuance of rare genetics is also made possible.
Growing up in the 1930s in Memphis, Tennessee, Phil Larimore is the ultimate Boy Scout—able to read maps, put a compass to good use, and traverse wild swamps and desolate canyons. His other great skill is riding horses.Phil does poorly in school, however, leading his parents to send him to a military academy. After Pearl Harbor, Phil realizes he is destined for war. Three weeks before his eighteenth birthday, he became the youngest candidate to ever graduate from Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia.Landing on the Anzio Beachhead in February 1944, Phil is put in charge of an Ammunition Pioneer Platoon in the 3rd Infantry Division. Their job: deliver ammunition to the frontline foxholes—a dangerous assignment involving regular forays into No Man's Land.As Phil fights his way up the Italian boot, into southern France, and across the Rhine River into Germany, he is caught up in some of the most intense combat ever as one of the youngest officers in the U.S. Army. Toward the end of the war, after fifteen months of front-line fighting, he's sent on a top-secret mission to find the world-famous Lipizzaner horses that Hitler has hidden away. But it's what happens in the final stages of the war and his homecoming – particularly the advocacy for amputees and the role that those permanently disabled from war can play in society -- that makes Phil's story so remarkable. Today's guest is Walt Larimore, the son of Phil and author of the new book At First Light: A True World War II Story of a Hero, His Bravery, and an Amazing Horse. He tells a WW2 story about courage, combat, and resourcefulness that continues to resonate today.

Hi again everyone,I am going to be taking a little break from the podcast while I stay on top of some of the other important things in my life. This episode is just to explain that to everyone and to thank a few community members who've made my Zed journey so far extra special.I appreciate all of you who take the time to listen and wish you all health and happiness in the new year.Cheers!
I was absolutely honoured to get a chance to sit down with these two legends.Sean and Tomi are the originators and creators of my favourite Zed Run stream 'Zed Bets' at the time of writing it is on 3 times a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm PST. They also created the Digital Derby! They moved to Vegas on a wing and prayer (plus a twitter DM as you will hear) and have been crushing it ever since. Two down to earth guys with complementary skill sets it's always a pleasure to jump in the chat on their show.As you can tell I highly recommend you go and join in the fun on the stream and please follow the links below for more information.http://twitch.tv/SEANvsALL (twitch stream)Twitter.com/SEANvsALL (Seans twitter)Twitter.com/TumTeezi (Tomi's Twitter)

In this episode, I sit down with the founder of ZedHead NFTs. As you'll know by now they have been bringing you the show for the past few weeks and I've been a member of this community since day one.It is evident that Tim wants to create something that brings a community together and provides a pleasant environment for us Zed Run folk and other gambling degenerates to gather and have some fun.If after listening you decide that you want to join this community then head on over to the website to mint your very own ZedHead NFT and become a member of our community.TwitterDiscordWebsiteAs always thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to listen
In this episode, I talk about how the breeding system for creating and selecting specific horse colours works, we touch on what level of control you have over the colours and also discuss how breeding purely for a colour may not be the most intelligent thing at this point in the game.Unfortunately, at the time of writing it appears that 'Steppe Stables' website is undergoing some changes and I couldn't find the breeding colour calculator.Once again a shout out goes to the Zedheads community for sponsoring this episode.Twitter DiscordWebsite
In this episode, we take a long hard look at the Breed Type Chart.I discuss some of the subtleties that I think are within it and reveal why Genesis male horses may prove to be extremely important going forward.Once again I would like to thanks the Zedheads_NFT community for sponsoring this episode and please feel free to go and check them out:-Twitter DiscordWebsiteYou can also listen to the show or read the episode content and check out my website now at zedrunpod.comAs always thanks so much for listening.

In this episode, I aim to provide food for thought by posing some questions which are intended to help you assess if the moves you are making on a day-to-day basis are congruent with your long-term Zed.run goals. This episode is brought to you by the @zedheads_nft community. Head over to the website and check out the roadmap to see if this is something you might be interested in!You can find them on any of the following platforms:-WebsiteTwitterDiscord The questions I ask are as follows:-Do I think Zed will be around long-term and why?Do I plan on being involved in Zed long-term and why?Where do I think the game will be in 3,6,9,12 and 24 months. How can I organize my stable plan to best take advantage of these predictions? What are my individual 1,3,6,9 and 12-month goals? Is my plan flexible? If not how can I make it more flexible? How will I fund these goals? (Hint: with money you can afford to never see again!)How can I organize my purchases, racing and breeding to meet my stable plan goals as efficiently as possible. How is the way I am racing my horses playing into my stable plan?If the market tanked (worse than it is at the time of writing) how would I insulate myself against this?If the market boomed how would I capitalize on that without completely devaluing my stable?
In this episode, I discuss the very first zed run tournament! So far it is running smoothly and long may that continue. The prolific availability of free races now has made this tournament accessible to all of us who own a horse! Listen in to find out some of the finer details from the Zed team and maybe pick up some tactics along the way!Best of luck to all who go for it and, as always, thank you for taking the time to listen I sincerely appreciate it.
