Back in the 70s I was a huge prog rock fan and an offshoot of that fandom was discovering jazz fusion. I think Jean-Luc Ponty was the first proper fusion record I ever owned. I believe I was a fusion fan before getting into jazz in general.    I've been planning on creating a fusion mix for months but just haven't gotten around to it. Then last month I was sipping coffee on a cold morning, listening to a fusion playlist, when a couple of laid back tunes came up. I immediately started a new playlist for quiet fusion tracks. And this mix is the result.   It's got some of my all time favorite jazz fusion artists - Alan Holdsworth, Brand X, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock & Miles Davis. But surprisingly, not my fav fusion artist - Bill Bruford. He just didn't have anything quiet enough that worked with the mix. But at least his guitarist, Alan Holdsworth made the cut.   I hope you enjoy listening to this little diversion as much as I did creating it.   Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00   Herbie Hancock - Vein Melter (Head Hunters 1973) 08:50   Allan Holdsworth - Distance vs Desire (Sand 1987) 13:56   John Abercrombie - Timeless (Timeless 1974) 21:38   Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays - September Fifteenth (As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls 1981) 29:06   Jaco Pastorius - Continuum (Jaco Pastorius 1976) 33:30   Soft Machine  - Between (Six 1973) 35:33   Joe Zawinul - In A Silent Way (Zawinul 1971) 40:11   Gong Emotions (Downwind 1979) 44:50   Jean-Luc Ponty - I Only Feel Good With You (Cosmic Messenger 1978) 47:38   Brand X - Black Moon (Masques 1978) 51:55   Miles Davis - It's About Time (The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions 2001) 60:49   e n d

Gibson has never been known for their amps. Though we may revere certain models, they pale in collectability with those made by Fender of the same era. After years of slow amp sales, Norlin, the owner of Gibson from 1969-1986, decided to start a new amp division under its own name, Lab Series. To design the new line, they turned to another division they owned, Moog, and they were tasked with making a transistor amp that sounded like a tube amp, and looked traditional, yet cutting-edge circuitry. Today, we look at the Lab Series line, and go through the unique features that made this a favorite for B.B. King, Ray Flacke, Ty Tabor, Alan Holdsworth, and Ricky Skaggs.  Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/To Support the Channel:Patreon  https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar:  https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch  - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/Support the show

Jay is at the beach and that means we get our annual check in with Michael Weddington! This year we have three topics to cover with Michael:-The Florida wood cockroach, or palmetto bug, is a large cockroach species found in the South and can grow between 30-40mm. Jay really dislikes them.-Louisiana blues artist Michael Juan Nunez blew Michael away at this year's New Orleans Jazz Fest. While the Louisiana Music Factory is currently out of stock (still the greatest record shop on the East Coast, in Michael's opinion), he found his music online and brings it to us today.-In most of Jay's memories, Michael is wearing a Grateful Dead tee shirt, so Jay was extremely excited to catch up with him at beach week this year and talk about his own new obsession. While he wore the tee shirts, and obtained them at Dead shows, Michael's love for the Dead stops there. He just liked the scene… but as far as the music, he's on the record as being “casually enthusiastic”.Songs:Michael Juan Nunez - “Lemonade” Michael Juan Nunez - “Rouxsta”Greg brings us a brand new Three For Thursday. Alex G is an eclectic indie artist that's been picking up steam this past year (thanks for the recommendation Zoya!). Aphex Twin has a new album coming out at the end of July and his single is worthy of a listen. Last up, Alan Holdsworth is one of Greg's favorites and bookends the segment quite nicely. Songs:Alex G - “Gretel” & “Runner”Aphex Twin - “Blackbox Life Recorder 21F/in a room F760”Alan Holdsworth - “Zarabeth”It was a busy week for Nick & a slow week for music news (plus Nick is still pumped about his new theme song), so this week we get “News With Nick: De-Tour” It's a new game with similar rules to most of the other games… Contestants are presented with a true story from the life of an artist on tour this week and they must choose the right artist from the options provided.Song: Raffy Bushman - “Silver Lines”

As Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe comes home after six years in Iranian detention, Emma spoke to the Foreign Secretary Liz Truss MP about what it took to secure her release along with another British-Iranian hostage Anoosheh Ashoori. In true popstar fashion, singer Rihanna announced her pregnancy in January with a New York photoshoot alongside her boyfriend, the rapper ASAP Rocky, wearing a bright pink coat, with layers of gold jewellery and chains resting on her new baby bump. And since that announcement, she's been seen wearing a number of eye-catching outfits. But is there a bump fashion revolution coming? And what could this mean for the everyday pregnant woman? We speak to celebrity stylist Jennifer Michalski-Bray and pregnant content creator Zara Bentley. The history of civil rights changed when Barbara Lisicki met Alan Holdsworth. The two were disabled cabaret performers in the 1980s when they met, fell in love and founded the disabled people's Direct Action Network (DAN). They became the driving force behind the campaign that ultimately led to the passing of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act. A new BBC Two drama, Then Barbara Met Alan, tells their story. Brittney Griner is 6 foot 9. She's an American basketball player, some say she's the greatest female basketball player of all time and she is currently being detained in Russia on drug charges that could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Overnight Russian courts have extended her detention for two more months. All this while tensions between Russia and the States remain tense and her family worry she may be used as a political pawn. Molly McElwee, the Telegraph's Women's Sports reporter explains. To mark Red Nose Day Ena Miller visits a Comic Relief supported project helping survivors of domestic abuse. At Tower House Horses they use equine assisted learning to help women improve their mental health and recover their confidence. A woman we are calling Sophie tells her story and Susie, one of the co-founders of the project, explains how horses help women who have been through trauma. Yesterday the government set out its plans to address racial disparities in the UK with changes to policing, health and education. Inclusive Britain: the government response to the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities sets out 70 plans including ones to tackle the differences in maternal health to ones referring to police powers. There also includes a plan to get a diverse panel of historians to, as the report puts it, ‘develop a new knowledge rich History Curriculum by 2024 exploring Britain's historical past'. But how would that actually work in practice? Kendra Mylnechuk Potter was adopted into a white family and raised with no knowledge of her Native background. A new film 'Daughter of a Lost Bird' currently showing at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival follows Kendra as she connects with her birth mother April, also a Native adoptee, and discovers her Lummi homelands in Washington state. Her story has parallels with many of those children affected by the 1958 Indian Adoption project, where Native children in the US were removed from their families and placed in white homes, dubbed by some as' cultural genocide'. In the late1970s the Indian Child Welfare Act came into force which prioritised keeping native Indian children within their own tribes. Anita speaks to Kendra and to the filmmaker Brooke Pepion Swaney. The history of civil rights changed when Barbara Lisicki met Alan Holdsworth. My guest today is Mr. Kirk Covington.  You know, out of all the musicians that I can think of, there aren't many that are as freakishly talented as Kirk. I mean I know guys can play a little of this and that on drums and keys, guitar , that kind of thing. But Kirk plays at such a ridiculously high level on drums, keys and vocals that it's kinda not fair!….. One of my favorite bands and a huge influence on my own playing was the band Tribal Tech with Scott Henderson on guitar. Kirk was a member of Tribal Tech for many years and manned the kit on many of their best records. He also worked with legends like Joe Zawinul, Alan Holdsworth, his own band Capt. Kirk, and was a member of the band Volto with Tool drummer Danny Carey.  Kirk has a larger than life personality and he is always laughing and joking. I always enjoy playing and getting to hang with him. I thought he would be a no- brainer for a guest on Riff Raff and he proved me right. In this episode we talk about his North Texas State training, his influences, how Elvis helps him play a funky groove, Bobby Caldwell and Captain Beyond, odd meter grooves, Tribal Tech stories, some great Allan Holdsworth stories and much much more. I think you'll love this one even if you aren't a drummer!
