This week's Empire Podcast (episode 664 if you're keeping score!) is more packed with goodness than your average Easter egg. Not only do Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and Alex Godfrey get into a discussion about what exactly makes a musical a musical (along with an impromptu visit to a certain mountain), but they tackle the week's movie news, including the revelation that the Oscars will finally have a Best Stunt Design category (note: this was recorded, due to the Easter holidays, before the new Fantastic Four trailer and Star Wars movie news. We'll get to those next week), and review Ryan Coogler's Sinners, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza's Warfare, and the new Steve Coogan film, The Penguin Lessons. And if that weren't enough, our guest egg overcracketh, as Chris sits down with Steve Coogan and co-star Jonathan Pryce, [21:13 - 33:16 approx] and Sinners' genius composer, Ludwig Göransson, [1:31:25 - 1:45:01 approx] while Alex has an engrossing chat with Warfare's directors, Ray Mendoza and the other Alex G. [52:19 - 1:07:55 approx] And finally, there's an excerpt from Chris' wonderful spoiler special chat with The Monkey director, Osgood Perkins. [1:46:16 - 1:57:31 approx] Our full spoiler special for that movie is now up in our spoiler special feed. Phew, told you it was a packed show. Enjoy!

https://www.instagram.com/olliebyrd_owlpagoda/https://www.youtube.com/@olliebyrdBioOllie Byrd finally dated the girl he had dreamed of since he was 14. They were together for several years before parting ways. A year after the breakup, Ollie wrote a song about the experience—a quintessential emo narrative. Decades later, he revisited the track, producing it in low-fi with subtle rock guitar elements, and released it as “The Sun Will Bring the Day Again.”The title, which does not appear in the lyrics, reflects a sentiment of optimism, as Ollie explains, “I couldn't bring myself to make it that sad… I thought it would be nice to have at least the title be optimistic.” The song, a reflection on the loss of his first true love, captures a raw, universal theme.“The Sun Will Bring the Day Again” is, in Ollie's words, “about acceptance.” He elaborates, “I had a crush on her since I was 14. She was literally the girl of my dreams. We had four or five years together, but I took it for granted, and of course, there's the level of testosterone motivating a young man to do silly, extremely stupid behaviors.”Having started recording at home in 2004, Ollie has long embraced the low-fi sound. He often draws comparisons to Alex G, a popular artist known for recording at home, with Ollie noting, “Every kid records at home now. Every kid in America has an album.” Ollie plays all the instruments himself and serves as his own producer.Ollie's 2006 album Barrel O' Fun received positive reception, and he toured with a band for several years. However, he realized that the music business, while rewarding, couldn't sustain him long-term. After a period off the radar, Ollie released music in 2012 before taking it down for rework. In 2018, his song “Couple Skate” from Barrel O' Fun went viral on Instagram, prompting him to return to his music career. Although Ollie still enjoys hard rock and over-driven guitars, he has since embraced a more mellow style, drawing inspiration from acoustic artists like Nick Drake and Jeremy Enigk.Reflecting on his growth as a musician, Ollie notes that when he originally wrote “The Sun Will Bring the Day Again,” he had limited compositional skills. However, when recording it years later, he applied the techniques he had honed over the years. He incorporated elements of over-driven guitar inspired by Brian Eno's work on Here Come the Warm Jets to add complexity and texture to the original, simple concept.“The Sun Will Bring the Day Again” remains a deeply personal track for Ollie, infused with raw emotion. It is a testament to both his growth as an artist and the heartache that inspired it. With new music on the horizon, listeners can connect with Ollie Byrd across all platforms for fresh songs, videos, and updates.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

Steven was off to NYC for the film festival premiere of Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary — which he worked on as story producer — ahead of streaming on HBO/Max on November 29 (2:24). After a brief conversation about yacht rock, the guys talk about the exodus on social media to Bluesky and how the new-ish app feels like a Christian rock alternative to X/Twitter (10:09).Then they hash out an unfortunate trend: The end of Pitchfork Fest. They share memories of the festival and discuss how it was like a convention for music writers (17:57). Finally, they discuss the meteoric rise of the indie-adjacent singer-songwriter Mk.gee and whether it annoys Alex G (43:00).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the Chicago emo band Bottom Bracket and Steven recommends the LA post-punk quartet Bondo (53:52).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Molly Brown and Alex Gravatt hold it down with Matt Hamilton away in San Diego and Jim Rutledge on his way back from Oklahoma. Molly has Alex G give her the recap of his food poisoning that caused him to miss hosting last night's Great Dane Huddle with Barry Alvarez, where Barry was sick of hearing from basketball player Ben Brust. Molly and G get into a different hot seat after the Packers opponent this week changed play-callers. With the Bears demoting their OC Shane Waldron — just as Jim Rutledge predicted — Molly and G get into Packers' fans joy from watching their rival in misery, asking which team's fanbase do Packers fans enjoy watching fail the most: the Bears, Jets or 49ers? Chicago is the ultimate archrival, but are the Jets with Aaron Rodgers and the playoff boogeyman 49ers more disliked by Packers fans? G also asks Molly which team she remembers enjoying the most when the Packers beat them and the teams who hurt her the most. Jason Wilde joins Molly Brown and Alex Gravatt to discuss Packers fans enjoyment at watching the Bears dysfunction and Barry Alvarez ripping into "the basketball player" Ben Brust. Jason first asks G how he's doing after missing Barry's debut as the title member of the Great Dane Huddle and Jesse setting him up to tear into Ben Brust. They also talk with Jason about his take on Wilde & Tausch this morning that, since he's not a Packers fan, he actually feels bad for Bears fans after the team showed its continued dysfunction by demoting its OC today. Are fans getting too caught up in Bears fans misery and looking past Sunday's game as an actual contest? They wrap up Hour 1 with a check-in on G's tummy and the results of today's poll question.

Jim Rutledge is joined by Alex Gravatt with Molly Brown out on mommy duty and Matt still curling in the Pan-Continental Curling Championships. Jim and G start with the biggest story in baseball -- the two "jackass" Yankees fans who interfered with the Dodgers' Mookie Betts in last night's World Series game! Jim demands that these two be put on the "no-fan" list and banned from ALL sports FOREVER! Alex G makes that case that Mookie's wrist is "fine" and there's no need to overreact. They also talk about the most egregious incidents of fans interfering in sporting events and the most embarrassing fan moments they've seen in person. Jim shares the story of when he maybe made a "Skip" of himself during the Pats vs Giants Super Bowl in 2007, and Prime shares his most uncomfortable movie fan moment. During Minute to Win It, with the Badgers first rivalry trophy game of the season coming up this Saturday, Jim and Prime quiz Alex G on the Big Ten's 17 rivalry game trophies!

Molly Brown is joined by Alex Gravatt in-studio, and Matt Hamilton swings by from Canada for the first hour of the show! Jim's away camping, so the crew has a safe therapy session for the Brewers after last night's tragic 4-2 loss to the Mets in the Wild Card round. Molly, G and Matt are sad but definitely not broken up, and can anyone be surprised when it comes to the Brewers? Meanwhile, Primetime is still grappling with yet another heartbreaking loss for the Brewers. They also discuss the out-of-nowhere news that Romeo Doubs might not actually play this weekend against the Rams after missing back-to-back practices due to a personal matter. If Doubs and Christian Watson both don't play, who will end up as the Packers' second-leading receiver behind Jayden Reed? Jason Wilde joins Molly, Alex G and Matt Hamilton (who makes a surprise appearance from Canada!). Jason wants to know about Matt's recent HANDSOME (and skin-toned) curling photo shoot. Molly wants to know (in true SNL style) What's Up With That, asking why is Romeo Doubs listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Rams due to a personal matter. Who could be the Packers' second-leading receiver with Doubs and Watson now both likely out, could this be a get-right game for the defense, and are we looking past the Rams & Matthew Stafford even though Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp are both out? Also, is it Tucker Kraft's world and Luke Musgrave is just living in it? Molly, G and Matt wrap up the Hamilton hour with an update on Matt's curling schedule at the Grand Slam up in Newfoundland along with Molly's second geography lesson of the week -- this time on the Atlantic time zone!

Jim Rutledge and Alex Gravatt hold things down on Phish Friday with Matt and Molly both still out in Colordao and Chicago, respectively. Jim and G get right into it for their Packers vs Vikings preview, debating whether Minnesota would've kept Green Bay out of the playoffs last year if Kirk Cousins had remained healthy. How much can we really take from the first 3 weeks of the season, and is Week 4 the starting point for when we should really start to judge teams? Is it revisionist history to say that we shouldn't have been surprised by Sam Darnold being one of the best QBs in the NFL to start the season? Jason Wilde joins Jim Rutledge and Alex G to discuss the Packers - Vikings and the big question mark for Sunday's game: how likely is it that Jordan Love will return after being listed as questionable for the second week in a row? What can we make of Matt LaFleur's newest non-answer line that "of course we're concerned" when asked about Love's health status. Also, what does Jason make of Jim and G's debate about whether you can start making sharp judgements on teams after the first 3 weeks of the season? Also, how will fans react to Aaron Jones return to Lambeau Field, and should Jones still have a grudge against Green Bay despite his heartfelt letter in the Players' Tribune? More importantly, G needs to know how the high school homecoming debut went for Jason's daughter last week! Jim wraps up Hour 1 by having G give his list of the teams that he's ready to say WILL NOT make the playoffs, and is it unfair to already say that the Bears definitely will not make it?

When can we start buying in to say that THIS time the Packers is actually legit under a new defensive coordinator? How much stock do you put into metrics other than just points allowed, and is this defense better or just more entertaining? Jim also invents a new way to eat barbecue (in the shower), and Matt is SOOO impressed by Caleb Williams setting the Bears' new single-game rookie passing record. Throwing Stones includes takes on Monday Night Football double-headers, double-negative news headlines, and do Packers fans have a Bears fan filer for anything Jim says? They go out to the Great Dane in Hilldale for Crosstalk featuring "The Don" himself, Barry Alvarez! Jim sets the record straight with Barry, who called out his "preposterous" twitter poll last week. First, they get into the pride of the travelling Packers fans who took over Nissan Stadium and all the bards in Nashville this past weekend, asking which opposing teams that fans would most want to travel to see the Packers play against. They also discuss just how much stock we should put into wins against the lowly Colts and Titans? Is this Packers defense "fixed" after getting 8 sacks vs Tennessee and already matching their interception total from all of last season under Joe Barry? Plus, what did Matt LaFleur prove with his offensive gameplan with Malik Willis against the Titans? Matt asks if the Willis will be a bigger advantage for the Packers or the Titans in this revenge game against is old team. If four generations make up a family, then how many podcast references to the early 2010s make up a revival? We confront the spectre of 2011 from a few different angles in this episode, but particularly via dance music, where it feels like the anthems of the early 2010s, not to mention the top tier of DJs, are yet to be replaced. Is that down to nostalgia for the music itself? A lack of inventiveness plaguing the decade since? Or have we entered a period in history where we're living through multiple revivals at once?We also talk about something genuinely brand new: Hit Em, the internet's genre-of-the-moment. This absurdist microgenre was invented on Twitter last Monday, discussed in our recording on Wednesday, and has since been covered in The Fader, NPR and The Guardian. Maybe it'll all be over by next week. Twitter being used for good? Now that does feel like a throwback to 2011.We also chat about Jane Schoenbrun's new film I Saw The TV Glow, and particularly its staggering musical moments. We doubt anyone's 2024 bingo card had Alex G, Yeule, Phoebe Bridgers and Fred Durst in the same room, let alone coalescing into some of the year's most must-see cinema. As ever, if you like what we're doing on No Tags then please like, rate, review or subscribe on your podcast app of choice, and if you really like what we're doing, consider supporting us via our paid tier. Alex G and Matt Hamilton roll into Hour 2 of the Gravy train's debut in the host chair. They delve into some of Dan Orlovsky's comments from when he joined Wilde & Tausch this morning, including why the Packers' wide receiver corps makes their offense so hard to defend and why the team's offensive support system sets up Jordan Love so well to succeed. They play Tinder Time with the Packers offensive support system (offensive personnel + coaching) versus some of the other top teams in the NFC. Throwing Stones includes question about where the Field House ranks among the Badgers athletics' best home advantages, does Camp Randall deserve to the be No. 7 in EA College Football's toughest places to play, and why is Jason Kelce so awesome to the fans? They wrap up G's debut reviewing the poll results of the day and whether G's girlfriend might finally call him her favorite ESPN WI host...

Jim Rutledge and Matt Hamilton are broken up while Jim is away for the NBA Draft in NYC. So, it's the host chair debut for America's Favorite Alex, Alex G! G starts with a story about why he's actually NOT his own girlfriend's favorite ESPN WI host, but Jim Rutledge actually is? With Jim attending the Mets-Yankees game today, they ask which R&H personality would be the most tolerable to attend a baseball game with. They also get into whether or not the 9 beer, 9 hot dog, 9 innings challenge is actually possible for any single human being. G and Matt also react to the Edmonton Oilers falling short of a historic 0-3 comeback in the Stanley Cup Finals as they lost 2-1 to the Florida Panthers in last night's Game 7. Matt explains why he's happy to see Canada's Stanley Cup drought extended to 30 years, and G can't stand seeing a team from Florida win a hockey championship. Mark Tauscher joins the show, and he actually kinda misses his sparring partner Jim Rutledge. G and Matt get Tausch's thoughts on last night's Stanley Cup Finals loss for the Oilers and if Matt is IPT for rooting so hard against the country of Canada. He also gives his biggest takeaway from when Dan Orlovsky joined his show this morning, including if the Packers sit-and-develop model is the way to go for all NFL teams and why he's so high on Jordan Love and the team's "offensive support system." Also, what does Tausch think of the 9 hot dogs, 9 beers, 9 innings challenge for a baseball game? Jim calls in while on his way to the Mets-Yankees game in NYC, how'd he fare the 9-9-9 challenge, and why is the favorite ESPN WI host of G's girlfriend?

Today's episode begins with a quick Sportscast in which Steven mourns the defeat of his surprisingly good Green Bay Packers and pays tribute to the lovable Detroit Lions (3:49). He and Ian also compare Detroit and San Francisco as music cities — it's Bob Seger vs. Huey Lewis time! Then they do a quick update of the winter Fantasy Albums Draft, as it is a big day for Steven's team with new releases by The Smile and Katy Kirby. (11:25) Then they break down The Smile's Wall Of Eyes, which sounds like a Radiohead album that's 90 percent as good.Next comes Steven's most anticipated part of the episode — it's an Ian Cohen pop quiz where Steven lists off 10 albums and asks Ian if he reviewed them for Pitchfork (25:45). This is taking "Remember Some Guys" to a whole new level. Then the guys address the discourse around Alex G's recent signing to RCA Records and whether he has the potential to become "Boygenius big." (40:38) In the mailbag, a listener asks about the recent commercial featuring a Das Racist oldie and an "explanation" of Hozier's success (48:25).In Recommendation Corner (1:00:31), Ian talks up the latest from the British band Courting and Steven reiterates Ian's recent rave for Glass Beach.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
