One of the most-cultured performances during Howard Kendall's tenure, the European Cup Winners' Cup final goes down as one of the greatest nights in Everton Football Club's history. The club's first and only European piece of silverware was achieved with a 3-1 on a sensational night in Rotterdam against Rapid Vienna. The final was held at Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on 15 May 1985. Everton, which dominated throughout, won the match 3–1 thanks to goals by Andy Gray, Trevor Steven and Kevin Sheedy. On this week's episode of the Joy of Football Podcast, Neil and Martin discuss a LOT of Crystal Palace and their FA Cup triumph! We start with ‘One Trophy Wonders' all about teams (such as Palace) who have won one trophy, and what it means for their history. Next, it's 'Explain That...' which centres on clubs who have previously had back-to-back relegations from the top flight. Then 'The Way We Were', which dives into Nottingham Forest European qualification and history. Martin's Letter from the Gantry is fixated on Goodison's farewell and how it proves (along with Crystal Palace at Wembley), just how important fans are. For the first time in their 119-year existence, Crystal Palace can call themselves FA Cup winners after a 1-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday. The Eagles were inspired by a heroic Dean Henderson performance after Eberechi Eze's goal gave them something to hang on to in the first half, and Man City couldn't break down the Palace door despite their efforts. Elsewhere, Goodison Park hosted its final game before Everton move to "Hill Dickinson Stadium" - something that irked Niall in today's Get In The Sea nominations. The Toffees eased past miserable Southampton to mark the occasion with three points on a day where 100 former players were invited to say their goodbyes. Also over the weekend there was ups and downs in the race for the European places. Arsenal secured second while simultaneously making Newcastle's fate go down to the final day, Aston Villa and Forest earned vital points too, but Brentford threw away a lead to lose to Fulham in a local derby, all but ending their hopes of a Conference League place. Sky Sports' Alan Myers looks back at the history and memories of the 'Grand Old Lady', as Everton's men's senior side prepare to say 'Goodbye Goodison'.You can watch the full documentary on the Sky Sports News YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWHu3ZiE_eA. The 'Goodbye Goodison' audio podcast was produced by Daniel Eales, Matthew Prior, Alan Myers and Chessie Bent.
After starting with Everton's most-successful skipper Kevin Ratcliffe at the Cheshire Cat pub in Christleton in March 2024, the 20th and final episode of the Goodison Park: My Home series sees Chris Beesley at ‘The Grand Old Lady' herself, to speak to current club captain Seamus Coleman. Arguably the best pound for pound signing of the Premier League era with his fabled “Sixty Grand” fee that features in a popular supporters' song, the Republic of Ireland international holds the Blues record for the most matches in the competition and is widely regarded as being their best player in his position of modern times. Lauded by then Everton manager Frank Lampard as “the best man I've ever met,” after the 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace in 2022 to secure top flight survival, the right-back from Killybegs, County Donegal, has epitomised the ‘Spirit of the Blues' both on and off the pitch for over 16 years since joining from Sligo Rovers in January 2009 and unlike many of his team-mates, he chooses to live in Liverpool itself. Speaking in his usual, candid manner, Coleman talks passionately to the ECHO about his love for Goodison Park, Everton Football Club and its fanbase. Goodison Park is set to become the home of Everton Women in a move that will retain the club's presence in its historic home. The men's team will play its final game at the Grand Old Lady on Sunday, ending 133 years of footballing heritage before the club moves to a new state-of-the art home on the Liverpool waterfront. Thousands of supporters will line the surrounding streets to welcome the players ahead of the game against Southampton and celebrations will continue on the pitch after the final whistle. The game will no longer mark the end of competitive football at the Goodison Road site, however, after the results of a feasibility study conducted by the club paved the way for the women's team move. Everton produced a spectacular comeback to defeat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage in glorious sunshine by the Thames after being on the back foot for most of the first 45 minutes. A powerful header from Raul Jimenez on 17 minutes put the hosts in front and they continued to boss proceedings for the lion's share of the first half before the Blues got back into the contest with a slice of good fortune when Vitalii Mykolenko's deflected shot deceived Bernd Leno. Everton went ahead on 70 minutes when substitute Dwight McNeil's corner-kick was headed in at the back post by Michael Keane, who had come into the side as one of four changes, before Beto completed the turnaround three minutes later as his shot proved too hot to handle for Leno. Dave Watson, Everton's most-recent trophy-winning captain, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. The centre-half was the Blues' skipper when they defeated Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final and recalls an incredible story about what happened to the famous silverware that night after the Wembley victory. Scouser Watson, who grew up on Boundary Street, close to the new Everton Stadium, started his professional career across Stanley Park with Liverpool – for whom his brother Alex later played – but never made a first team appearance before joining Norwich City in 1980. While with the Canaries, he made his England debut, winning his first of 12 caps for the Three Lions, in a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium before lifting the League Cup the following year. He returned to his home city in 1986 when Howard Kendall snapped him up for Everton for a then club record £900,000 fee and was part of their last League Championship-winning side in his first season at Goodison Park. Now 63, Watson made 528 appearances for the Blues – the third highest in history behind Neville Southall (751) and Brian Labone (534) – and also had a stint as caretaker manager in 1997 following Joe Royle's exit before having a season in charge of Tranmere Rovers in 2001/02 to serve all three of Merseyside's professional football clubs. Everton threw away a two goal lead against an already relegated Ipswich Town side to be held to a frustrating 2-2 draw in Goodison Park's penultimate fixture. With a series of spectacular displays in the stands courtesy of fan group the 1878s, the two sides took to the pitch with a ticker tape welcome and the party atmosphere looked like continuing for the hosts. Beto headed David Moyes' side ahead on 26 minutes and nine minutes later, Dwight McNeil doubled their lead with a strike that left visiting keeper Alex Palmer rooted to the spot. However, an incredible, swerving drive from Julio Enciso four minutes before the interval handed the Suffolk side a lifeline and they shocked the Blues with a headed back post equaliser from substitute George Hirst 11 minutes from the end to earn a share of the spoils. Everton prepare to leave their home of 133 years, Goodison Park, later this month, so we felt that we had to pay tribute to this venerable institution, one of the great cathedrals of English football. Dave Bowler is joined by Paul McParlan, a Goodison regular since the 1960s, to recall the Holy Trinity, the Boys' Pen, Pele and Eusebio and plenty more in our farewell to the grand old ground.

Everton's record-breaking wait for a Premier League win at Stamford Bridge continues as they were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in the west London sunshine. Nicolas Jackson struck the only goal of the contest on 27 minutes when Beto gave up possession cheaply and the Senegal international striker struck a low drive beyond Jordan Pickford. Although the hosts threatened to run riot at that time having dominated the first half, David Moyes' men, playing their first fixture after their Premier League status had been secured for next season improved as the contest wore on. Abdoulaye Doucoure should have done better with a header just before the break while both Beto and substitute Dwight McNeil were denied in the second half as the visitors searched in vain for an equaliser. Chris Beesley is joined by guests Gavin Buckland and David Prentice for a a special edition of the Royal Blue podcast to mark the 40th anniversary of Everton's 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in the European Cup-Winners' Cup semi-final second leg, an occasion widely-regarded as the greatest night in Goodison Park's history. After a goalless first leg in what was then West Germany, Everton, roared on by a passionate home crowd, recovered from a goal down at half-time to power through to what remains their only European final. In what proved to be a legendary team talk, manager Howard Kendall told his players at the interval that "The Gwladys Street would suck the ball into the net," and so it proved with goals from Graeme Sharp and Andy Gray before Trevor Steven's iconic late clincher. Gavin and David, who were both present at Goodison to witness the action, share their memories along with exclusive interviews from Everton players who starred that night: Derek Mountfield, Kevin Sheedy, Kevin Ratcliffe, Peter Reid and Trevor Steven.
