In this episode, Alex welcomes pianist, composer, and educator Kenny Werner, author of the landmark book Effortless Mastery. Kenny's teachings have revolutionized the way musicians think about practice, performance, and creativity. Though widely respected for his playing, Werner's profound influence as a teacher has often eclipsed his musical output—something this episode sets out to correct. Alex and Kenny dive deep into the philosophy behind Effortless Mastery, a system of learning and unlearning that helps musicians quiet their inner critics, accept where they are, and move forward with intention and ease. They also explore how spirituality, rhythm, and breathing all play essential roles in accessing “the space”—that elusive zone where creativity flows freely. Alex Skolnick first became well known as the guitarist for Testament. Alex is not just a speed player however, and has a broad interest in different musical styles. He can certainly shred with the best of them, but there are many flavors to his playing. Alex joins us by phone to discuss one of his bands, Metal Allegiance, who have a live show coming up on January 23, 2025 in Anaheim California. We talk about his background, find out how he went from playing thrash to jazz, earning a degree in jazz, and talk about the forming of Metal Allegiance and discuss the two albums the band have released to this point, and whether a third album will be forthcoming. Alex picks out some Metal Allegiance music for us to crank up at the end. Alex has had such and interesting career and he was absolutely a pleasure to speak with. Check out our conversation and check out some killer music from Metal Allegiance! Rock and Roll music (and conversation) that DESERVES to be heard!
Alex welcomes Moon Zappa to discuss her book, Earth To Moon, which explores the complexities of growing up in families characterized by narcissism and fame. Alex and Moon reflect on the legacies of their fathers, the impact of parental influence on artistic expression, and the notion that genius does not always translate into practical life skills. Moon shares her experience of finding refuge in artistic expression during her upbringing, recounts her journey of self-discovery, and tells Alex about her latest creative projects. Moon Unit Zappa is the daughter of legendary musician Frank Zappa and his second wife, Gail. At the age of fourteen, Moon appeared in Frank Zappa's career defining music video, “Valley Girl,” which later helped jump-start her own career. Since then, Moon has worked as an actress, writer, comedian, artist, businesswoman, and podcaster. Moods & Modes is hosted and produced by Alex Skolnick. Executive Producer: Kirsten Cluthe. In this episode, Alex visits the iconic Carmine Street Guitars in New York City with his bandmates Percy Jones and Tim Motzer from PAKT. The shop, established by Rick Kelly, crafts distinctive guitars from reclaimed wood salvaged from the city's historic buildings. These guitars, known for their unique sound, have caught the attention of celebrated musicians such as Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Jim Jarmisch, Jamie Hince, and Daniel Kessler, to name a few. During their visit, Rick Kelly and his apprentice, Cindy Hulej—who has since launched her own brand, Cindy Guitars—delve into the shop's history, their meticulous guitar-making process, and anecdotes about their custom instruments and notable clients. This episode offers a rare glimpse into a one-of-a-kind shop where each piece tells a story of New York's past, marrying craftsmanship with music history. Alex Skolnick has been a guitar hero since the age of fifteen when he became lead guitarist for the Berkley, CA thrash metal institution Testament. It's no wonder: his teacher was none other than virtuoso Joe Satriani who, in his years as an instructor, also taught Steve Vai, Charlie Hunter, and Metallica's Kirk Hammett. Skolnick has also been a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and was named one of the greatest guitarists of all time as well as one of the fastest guitarists of all time by Guitar World Magazine. Skolnick also plays world music and jazz that ranges far afield from what he writes with Testament. Since 2000, he has recorded five records of nimble and engaging original work with The Alex Skolnick Trio which is simply fantastic. Skolnick dropped in to discuss his storied career with Testament, taking the leap into jazz as a metalhead, the cosmic era of Miles Davis, and the jazz group and record that changed his life: Esbjörn Svensson Trio's Seven Days of Falling. EST was a piano-double bass-drums trio formed in 1993 that blurred genres, merging classical, rock, pop, and techno into an inimitable sound that broke the conventional boundaries of what modern jazz can be. Seven Days of Falling, recorded in 2003, is considered the group's most artful work, charting simultaneously on the pop and jazz charts in Sweden, a milestone for an instrumental album. We paired this singular, beautiful, moody masterpiece with a stark wine like no other: Recaredo Terrers, Brut Nature Cava 2017. This Spanish sparkling wine has been produced in the traditional hands-on manner since 1924, from organic grapes aged five years on the lees (spent yeast cells used in fermentation), giving the wine sumptuous depth. Typically this imbues sparkling wine with yeast and cream flavors but this wine has none of that. Brut Nature indeed, this zero dosage cava (no further wine/sweetening added in the fermentation process) is crisp, clean, and biting, like a white wine razor across the palette. Guest: Guitarist Alex Skolnick (Testament, The Alex Skolnick Trio) Album: Essbjörn Svensson Trio, Seven Days of Falling Wine: Recaredo Terrers, Brut Nature Cava 2017

Today I’m talking to Alex Skolnick. Alex is an amazing guitar player who is probably best known for being part of the legendary Bay Area Thrash metal band Testament—who actually just released a new record a couple weeks back called “Titans of Creation”. He was in testament from the time he was a teenager into his early 20s and then did some session work with people like the incredible bassists like Stu Hamm and Michael Manring. He also did some stuff with the band Savatage and eventually moved to NYC to study at the New School and pursue his desire to play jazz. And from there he started the Alex Skolnick Trio and they play cool jazz-influenced versions of classic rock and metal tunes as well as original music. Eventually, he made his way back to Testament and now he exists in two musical worlds.Alex is a friend of mine and we had a great chat about his origins, where he grew up, what drew him to jazz, the challenges of being a well-known musician expressing their political views on social media, and gives some observations, some insight and his very intelligent and measured take on the state of things.

Alex Skolnick is one of the most versatile guitarists in the metal game and was waaaaay ahead of the curve when it came to shred metal guys taking a step outside of the metal world. And, being such an amazing player he is an incredibly cool and humble guy, clearly happy to be living a life creating and performing music. It might seem weird to some that I would mention a musician being absolutely happy living a musician's life but trust me, its less common than you think it is. We talk in this episode about functional/dysfunctional band dynamics, Alex Skolnick Trio and playing with "real jazz guys", and new Testament LP. Look for a complete and unedited version of our conversation in an upcoming Couch Riffs podcast! Reflecting back on the middle school kid I was in the outer edges of the Bay Area in '84-'85 I can tell you that it was a thrill and an honor to have Alex in my home to do Couch Riffs with ME. Metal was everything to me and, as I've stated in the past, KVHS radio was a High School station that was almost entirely staffed by teenage metalheads promoting all the killer metal of the time. That's when I first heard Testament along with Metallica, Venom, Slayer, Megadeth, Cirith Ungol, Posessed, and tons of others. This 7th grade year was so important to me and I'm forever grateful to have had a community radio station like KVHS nearby. When they shut down each evening I was always so sad. But, that was the same year that I started building my record collection! So, I had that to fall back on. I spent so much time writing my favorite bands' names on any flat surface near me and drawing my imaginary band names on my Pee Chee folders. I wish I could remember some of those names now. "I'm sure they were all great, great names". Thank you so much Alex. Congratulations on the release of your amazing new album, Conundrum, and good luck in 2019 with the new Testament album. I'm very much looking forward to hearing it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/support

At 16, Alex was one of the founding members of the metal band Testament. In the late 1990’s, Alex - consistently recognized as one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time - walked away from it all. He moved cross country from his native San Francisco to New York City… and went to college to get a degree in Jazz... He faced loads of criticism from friends and family for doing this… but today, he’s happier than ever. Also, the most valuable thing Alex learned taking lessons from Joe Satriani… cold, harsh lessons learned in the music business… difference between progress and practice… pleasing others… why NOT fitting in is something to be proud of, and LOADS more stories in this rare glimpse into Alex’s personal life...
