Imagine knowing exactly how to create learning experiences that not only engage students but actually improve their brains. This fascinating conversation with Julia Skolnick, CEO of Professional Learning Partnerships, and second-grade teacher Stacy Robeson reveals the powerful intersection of neuroscience and education that every educator should understand. At the heart of effective learning lies what Skolnick calls the "Safe, Stretch, Stick" model—a profound yet accessible framework grounded in brain science. When students feel psychologically threatened, their brains cannot process academic content. Students can take risks and stretch beyond their comfort zones only when they feel secure, ultimately making learning memorable. This foundation expands into the "Six Gears" framework—trust, agency, passion, memorable, meaningful, and motivational—which provides a comprehensive approach to designing learning experiences that align with how our brains naturally work. Robeson brings these concepts to life through her classroom experiences, sharing how even second-graders thrive when given appropriate levels of agency and opportunities to pursue passions. Perhaps most compelling is the conversation around teacher agency and efficacy. Schools can revitalize educator passion and student learning outcomes by reclaiming protected spaces for teacher innovation and growth.Ready to transform your teaching through brain science? Listen to this episode to start your journey toward creating classrooms where students learn more effectively and develop a genuine love of learning that lasts a lifetime.EPISODE RESOURCES:Connect with Julia via her via Instagram, and LinkedIn.Check out the PLP website which hosts free resources, as well as a PLP Membership with access to digital modules, research-based frameworks and design tools, and more.

Misty Skolnick, co-owner of Uncle Jerry's Pretzels in Lancaster County is our first guest on the program today! Misty shares how her co-owner father Jerry began the company in 1988--delivering pretzels in the Delaware Valley--as well as the company's growth and development from local business to having a national presence. Uncle Jerry's Pretzels have been free of oil, sugar, preservatives and article dyes since the company's inception. Skolnick discusses how this comes into play today, with new Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s recent warnings to PepsiCo, General Mills and other large food companies that one of his top priorities will be eliminating artificial dyes from our nation’s food supply to combat growing rates of chronic disease and other health issues among Americans. Retired FBI agent Scott Payne also joins the show to discuss his new book, Code Name: Pale Horse: How I Went Undercover to Expose America's Nazis. Payne, a decorated agent dubbed the “Hillbilly Donnie Brasco,” takes readers along with him on some of the most terrifying and riskiest assignments in FBI history. He went deep undercover with the lethal Outlaw Motorcycle Club in Massachusetts; to the front lines of the opioid epidemic in Tennessee; and infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in Alabama. Through it all, he stayed married to the love of his life, raised two girls, and spent his Sundays at church, sustained by family and faith. The City of Lost Children is a fairy tale like surrealist black comedy about a mad scientist who kidnaps orphans in order to steal their dreams. Two years ago, on Movie Night Apocalypse, we talked to Jared and Kt about Caro-Jeunet's earlier film Delicatessen. The City of Lost Children stars Ron Perlman, who learned literally just enough French to say his lines, as well as Dominique Pinon, Daniel Emilfork, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, Cemetery Man's François Hadji-Lazaro, and Judith Vittet. #ronperlman #french #frenchcinema #surrealism #dreams #jeanpierre #marccaro #jeanpierrejeunet #amelie #filmpodcast #moviepodcast #horrormoviepodcast #cinema #frenchmovie #dystopian Jared's latest project is WOODFELLAS: While traveling to the countryside to 'deal with' an informant, three Boston mobsters run afoul of a murderous woodland cult. (NOTE: This interview is from December 2020. I've converted the video to podcast form. You can watch the interview here.)It's like opening a time capsule now when I listen to songwriters talk in 2020 about how they were navigating the pandemic as artists. For some, it was a bane: the isolation paralyzed their creativity. For Alex Skolnick of Testament, it was a boon. Quite simply, he says, "Not having to travel has opened me up to different ways to be creative that I didn't have before."  But on those rare occasions when he's in a rut (and they are very rare), Skolnick knows what to do: "If I'm stuck, I know what to do to get inspired. I know which films to watch, which books to read, which tv shows to watch."

We are revisiting one of our most top downloaded shows with guests, Zach Beutler & Josh Skolnick of Horse Power Brands. In this episode, Zach and Josh discuss their key learnings from more than ten years of franchising. The largest roadblock to an entrepreneur's success is succumbing to the shoulda, coulda, and woulda's of life. But, whether you're interested in franchising or other business models, Josh believes that in order to go past this, one must leap into the unknown. In this episode, you will learn:•        Zach and Josh – on failures and bouncing back bigger and the brand so much stronger•        The ideal candidate for franchising and the basic process to get fit for a franchise•        Leading with transparency and integrity that care about people's success•         Actions speak louder than words; leap into business ownership•        Build your own dream and take control of your financial future•        And so much more! About Zach Beutler & Josh Skolnick: Josh Skolnick is the co-founder and CEO of Horse Power Brands, a home services franchisor and the parent company of Mighty Dog Roofing. Josh founded Monster Tree Service in 2008 and grew the brand to a multi-million-dollar U.S. network. Zachery Beutler is the co-founder and CDO of Horse Power Brands. He began his career in franchising as a young franchisee with Nebraska-based Complete Nutrition, later becoming a multi-unit franchisee of Color World Housepainting, Inc. The idea of HorsePower Brands began in 2019 when franchise veterans Josh Skolnick & Zach Beutler, determined to disrupt the franchise industry joined forces to form HorsePower Brands. Frustrated by the lack of accountability by franchisors to open and support franchisees the duo wanted to create a platform focused on operational excellence and accountability. Accountability starts with ownership and that's why they own at minimum a controlling interest in all the brands to which their ownership group attaches their names. All steps of selling a franchise opportunity and supporting franchise owners are handled under one roof by their staff. They have developed detailed and transparent franchise development strategies that allow them to responsibly award franchise opportunities to the right people. More importantly, they are open to all the franchise territories they award and have experienced operations teams to ensure their franchisees achieve their financial goals through business ownership.Website: www.horsepowerbrands.comPodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/cr/podcast/disrupting-the-franchise-industry-zach-beutler-josh/id1499864638?i=1000551225392  Connect with Franchise Freedom...Website:          https://ggthefranchiseguide.com/podcast/Linkedin:          https://www.linkedin.com/company/gg-the-franchise-guideFacebook:       https://www.facebook.com/GGTheFranchiseGuideTwitter:            https://twitter.com/ggrammaticoInstagram:      https://www.instagram.com/gg_the_franchise_guide

Finding Your Artist Spark  Harvey Dinnerstein, Proudly Realistic Painter, passed away at 94. He documented the early days of the civil rights movement in evocative drawings. Later, his paintings examined details of the everyday life around him. Hear how current events prompted him to use art to chronicle the people in the civil rights movement.   He had to stop teaching when the pandemic hit, but he never stopped creating. Hear his philosophy on finding the artists spark in the absence of inspiration.   Looking for some inspiration? Listen to episode 123, Restore Your Artists Heart here  How to Evoke Emotion with Your Descriptions of Your Artwork   Many lingerie brands use descriptive words that connote romance, seduction, and sex to describe their products. The Natori brand went in a completely different direction, appealing to modern women who want to feel sophisticated. Their marketing copy is crafted accordingly.   Successful brands use feeling words to describe their product. Instead of being perceived as a commodity, Natori counts on us feeling good about ourselves when we wear their brand.   People will pay more for a product that makes them feel good and gives them pleasure. This is one of the things I break down in a chapter of my upcoming book.   Order your copy of the book and get the bonuses now!  Is it Worth it?   I recently moved to a two-bedroom apartment in NYC. I love our life here, but I find myself dreaming of more windows and natural light.  While preparing to move in, I found out there was an extra window that had been intentionally covered by sheet rock for a specific design aesthetic that the previous owner wanted. Is it worth knocking down a wall for the extra light?   Is it worth it is a question I hear in my artist community. Is it worth it to create a website for my art? Is it worth it to continue painting if I'm not selling much work? Is a show in the city worth it?   Is there a window hidden behind the wall in your life? I believe it's always worth it.   For support to be the artist you are meant to be check out the resources ready and waiting for you in the Artist Incubator.  Are We Born Artists?   Arnold Skolnick designed the iconic poster for the famed festival in 1969. He actually did it in a weekend after the first design was rejected by the local merchants. He was paid $12,000, a hefty sum in 1969 to be sure.   Skolnick is also known for his belief that “you don't become an artist, you either are or are not.” I'd love to know what you think. I've shared this on Instagram and would love your insights.   Let me know what you think on Instagram.  Keeping Up With What's Working Now When I was getting ready to sell my suburban home, I had a rude awakening. I was told that my brown furniture was out of style and I was even asked to remove some of it. Then I decided if brown wasn't working then I'll paint it all white.   A friend asked me how I knew what to do. Honestly, I didn't. I asked at the hardware store and with some painful trial and error, I figured out a method that worked for me.   I've had 25 years of trial and error making a living as an artist. My incubator is where you can get the short cuts and insights and the benefit of the lessons I learned along the way.   Here's a great example of keeping up with what's working or, like my brown furniture, what's not working. Couplet Coffee, which sells both coffee beans and coffee-related products online, is only a few months old and is trying to enter the market with a bang. Currently, it's available online as well as at select partners like Lotto.com's Players Cafe. Founder and CEO Gefen Skolnick joined the Modern Retail Podcast this week and spoke about the launch. "Couplet was my side project in college," Skolnick said. "I've just been obsessed with coffee for over ten years now." For the last year, however, Skolnick has been testing out to see if the brand could become a viable business. Much of this was done via limited-edition drops, as well as one-off retail partnerships at pop-ups like a recent Bumble-sponsored NYC cafe. In the beginning, Couplet's landing page was a barebones cashdrop site that sold a small amount (for example, 30) limited-edition coffee bean bags or products like french presses. These drops sold out quickly -- much of that driven, according to Skolnick, by social media buzz -- which gave more credence to the brand. Now, Couplet is trying to take things to a new level. While it still has small-scale partnerships with artists and drops limited edition products, the brand is trying to grow its permanent presence as well. It is currently in 17 retail stores nationwide. In addition to its online offerings, which went live earlier this year, Couplet is opening over 20 coffee cart locations at Players Cafe. Skolnick said more expansion announcements are on the horizon. Growing this type of company was new terrain for Skolnick. Despite only being in her mid-20s, over the last few years, Skolnick had worked in a variety of capacities -- from software engineering to DTC marketing to investing. But, she hadn't really honed in specifically on coffee before. So Skolnick grew her network to get a better understanding of the space. "I spent all of last year... figuring out how operations work, figuring out how DTC brands do what they do, figuring out how coffee companies do what they do and creating an advisor and investor ecosystem that could help me figure it out," Skolnick said. All this helped Skolnick raise a seed round of funding in 2021. This education isn't over now the Couplet has officially launched -- but the plan is to continue growing the company. While Skolnick is seeking out more coffeeshop and retailer partnerships, she's also hoping to grow the product line and keep Couplet true to its roots. Even with the growing amount of external partnerships, Skolnick said, "we're primarily a DTC brand."

Alex Skolnick has been a guitar hero since the age of fifteen when he became lead guitarist for the Berkley, CA thrash metal institution Testament. It's no wonder: his teacher was none other than virtuoso Joe Satriani who, in his years as an instructor, also taught Steve Vai, Charlie Hunter, and Metallica's Kirk Hammett. Skolnick has also been a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and was named one of the greatest guitarists of all time as well as one of the fastest guitarists of all time by Guitar World Magazine. Skolnick also plays world music and jazz that ranges far afield from what he writes with Testament. Since 2000, he has recorded five records of nimble and engaging original work with The Alex Skolnick Trio which is simply fantastic. Skolnick dropped in to discuss his storied career with Testament, taking the leap into jazz as a metalhead, the cosmic era of Miles Davis, and the jazz group and record that changed his life: Esbjörn Svensson Trio's Seven Days of Falling. EST was a piano-double bass-drums trio formed in 1993 that blurred genres, merging classical, rock, pop, and techno into an inimitable sound that broke the conventional boundaries of what modern jazz can be. Seven Days of Falling, recorded in 2003, is considered the group's most artful work, charting simultaneously on the pop and jazz charts in Sweden, a milestone for an instrumental album. We paired this singular, beautiful, moody masterpiece with a stark wine like no other: Recaredo Terrers, Brut Nature Cava 2017. This Spanish sparkling wine has been produced in the traditional hands-on manner since 1924, from organic grapes aged five years on the lees (spent yeast cells used in fermentation), giving the wine sumptuous depth. Typically this imbues sparkling wine with yeast and cream flavors but this wine has none of that. Brut Nature indeed, this zero dosage cava (no further wine/sweetening added in the fermentation process) is crisp, clean, and biting, like a white wine razor across the palette. As a student, Lee Skolnick equally prized and devoured these subjects. This passion for knowledge across disciplines led him to architecture, where they all converge. This interdisciplinary view informs Lee's approach to every project. He creates narratives that unfold as people move through his designs, all senses engaged. His work can educate and entertain. Convey meaning and emotion. Provoke thought and imagination. Lee achieves this through a keen understanding of how humans make sense of the world and themselves, which is to say, storytelling. He generates a fully integrated architectural experience to transcend a space's purpose. Since the 1980s, he has been awarded Architectural Digest's AD100, the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement from The Cooper Union , the Lifetime Achievement Award from AIA Long Island, Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of Leicester in Great Britain, and his work has won numerous local, state and national AIA Honor Awards. Is it healthy to not allow our young children to experience pain as we hear stories of eliminating speech classes so they don't feel too much anxiety? Maybe, as I am fighting to open up discussion about things that aren't comfortable talking about with my listeners or at high schools such as substance abuse, sex, or suicide awareness. Do we wait for our kids to experience these when they turn 18 and not have their parents to help them understand work through their stress? They go to college and have drugs put in their face and told how cool they are? This is precisely where the story of Buddhism started and it was with a loss of innocence. A young who had been raised in a life of royal ease, shielded from the misery and cruelties of the world outside the palace gates, distracted by sensual pleasures and luxurious living. But one day he saw the real world and it shook him to the core. He saw people suffering from sickness, old age and death; and was disturbed that this was our fate. He came across a holy man, and discarded his family, fortune and kingdom in pursuit of the path of liberation. The major question that he sought to answer was: "How may suffering be ended?" He wandered, meditated, studied with various teachers, and attained high states of consciousness; but he did not find the answer to his question. He tried everything he could think of, almost to the point of death by starvation, and nothing. He finally sat under a bodhi tree, and eventually attained enlightenment; he became the Buddha -- the Awakened One. He had ascended through various stages of meditative awareness, he had seen all of his past lives, and he had seen directly into reality, into the nature of existence and the causes of suffering and rebirth. He pondered whether to try to teach these insights, so subtle and difficult to grasp to others. Finally he decided that at least some of the people would be able to understand; perhaps more importantly, they could be shown the path to arrive at these insights themselves. He gave his first sermon to a few disciples and then continued to wander and teach for the next forty-five years, until his death at the age of eighty. Stay tuned as my guest today is going to bring the east to the west and we are going to learn how “Perspective” leads to inner peace, contentment, and fulfillment. Maybe, learn how to eliminate suffering and find a cure for the pain of human existence as this was Buddhas main concern.
