It's been 10 years since Alison Gannett was diagnosed with "terminal" brain cancer and given approximately six months to live.  How has she managed to beat the odds?Cancer is not a "generalized" disease to be treated like you're on a conveyor belt.  It's an "individualized" condition, and Alison credits cancer for waking her up to the root causes of disease that were plaguing her.  She describes her "check engine" light as being on, yet ignored as she tried to push herself and prove herself in life (something we are all guilty of doing whether we have cancer or not). This incredible story of self-discovery and positivity may be just what you need to hear today.  Join us on today's podcast as Alison and I talk about the importance of lab testing, knowing and acknowledging your family history, genetic makeup and so much more!Connect with Alison Gannett:https://alisongannett.comSuggested Resource Links:Holy Terror Farm (Facebook page)BOOK:  Fully Alive by Susie LarsonPODCAST:  Susie Larson on the Believe Big podcastSuperfund Cleanup SiteBOOK:  The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der KolkBOOK:  The Anti-Cancer Cookbook by Alison Gannett

It was a real treat to speak with Alison Gannett. Her story of being a high level professional athlete to dealing with brain cancer is motivating and inspiring. As we discussed on the show, there is a difference between being fit and being healthy. It's really important to avoid making the mistake that they are synonymous. Lately I've been following more of a keto diet because I know how the ketogenic diet affects cancer cells. Essentially the idea is that cancer feeds on sugar, and when you replace sugar with healthy fats, your body learns to use energy from fats and the cancer cells die. That's the theory. And according to Dominic D'Agostino cancer cells need sugar to continue to proliferate and to grow. Some of our guests have said that the keto diet is great for initially starving the cancer but then the cancer is smart, and it adopts to the new terrain devoid of glucose. When the cancer cell changes its metabolic ability to uptake energy from sugar to fat, the keto diet becomes less effective at starving cancer cells. Then there are other guests who disagree saying that cancer cells cannot adopt and derive energy from fat. Alison Gannett certain is proving the latter to be true. She gets between 50 and 60 markers tested each month with her blood tests to see how her body is doing with the cancer. We talked about which blood tests she gets each month, how she monitors her progress, the labs where she gets the tests taken as well as the woman who is responsible for her transformation. This was a fascinating show which was full of hope, inspiration and motivation. 3 things you typically don't get by going to a conventional medical doctor who only knows cut, burn and poison as their main treatments for cancer. We really do have a say in whether or not our bodies create disease and how our immune system is able to handle that. I hope you really enjoy this show with Alison Gannet about her story with brain cancer and how the keto diet is helping her get through it all. Please share! Happy listening! It was an honor to have Dr. Natasha Winters on the show. She came highly recommended by our former guest Alison Gannett whose body is right now healing from brain cancer. Dr. Winters is the author of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer: Integrating Deep Nutrition, the Ketogenic Diet, and Nontoxic Bio-Individualized Therapies If you haven't had a chance to hear that show I'll put it in the show notes below. It's really good and her story is eye opening. In that show Alison really sung the praises of Dr. Natasha Winters who has helped turn her life around with regards to the brain cancer her body has. I pose the question in the title of this podcast, can we find the cure for cancer if we constantly are "fighting" it. I even see shirts now that say Fu#$ Cancer. Dr. Winters in my humble opinion (after listening to thousands of hours of alternative health lectures, watching videos, attending seminars, reading books, reading articles and interviewing 500 people myself) that her approach to cancer is one of the best I've seen. I've been in this field since 2003 and have consumed everything I could get my hands on and Dr. Winters really does seem to tackle all the angles when it comes to cancer. It's not enough to focus on the emotional spiritual and still eat a diet that doesn't support healing. It's also not enough to completely neglect the role of emotional and spiritual issues while only focusing on the physical. All parts play a role in my opinion. It takes grit to deal with emotional, spiritual, physical and mental issues when you want your body to heal. I watched many videos of hers before the show to prep but the one below was the one I found most touching and inspiring. Make sure to check it out. On Last Thing! Alison Gannett was diagnosed with terminal malignant brain cancer in 2013, and given 6.8 months to live, even with surgery, chemo and radiation. After a partially successful surgery, she found Dr. Nasha Winters, and was thrilled to hear that she could “live a long happy life and die of old age”. Dr. Nasha outlined a non-toxic treatment program that was tailored to her tumor pathology testing, as well as radical changes to her diet and lifestyle. Nutritional needs were designed around her DNA and monthly blood chemistry lab tests. Testing also revealed a Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Lyme Disease, Epstein Barr Virus, Parasites, a hormone imbalance, vitamin deficiencies, heavy metals, toxins, radon, high blood sugars and much more. Alison loved the “test don't guess” model of optimizing her health. She was so thrilled with the results, that she decided to dedicate her life to paying it forward and helping others. Alison currently specializes in personalized nutrition and lifestyle coaching – adjunct support to prevent, manage, or conquer cancer using DNA, blood chemistry, health history and molecular tumor pathology. Alison Gannett was an organic farmer and professional extreme skier travelling the world competing and one day she was cooking bacon at home and it caught on fire.  Her husband walked in to see her admiring the flames and realised they were really in trouble.  After a CT scan they found an orange sized tumour in her brain.   It was a type of terminal brain cancer and they reckoned she had around 6 months to live.  She refused to take this lying down and worked with Dr. Nasha Winters to reverse her insulin resistance via dietary interventions and today the brain tumour is gone and at 56 she says she feels better than when she was 20. Her main focus these days is on teaching people about how their DNA can have a profound effect on their health.  She identifies certain genes that could be causing problems and then how tweaking your diet and lifestyle can negate the effects of these genes.  She goes into detail about a few genes like the ones that affect the processing of things like dairy, lactose in particular, coffee, chocolate and the ApoE4 that affects how we processes saturated fats and how people carrying that gene are more inclined to develop Alzheimer's.  She also touches on the study of epigenetics where we can learn how to turn certain genes on or off, again, through diet and lifestyle changes. Building a functional medicine practice can seem daunting, especially when it seems like nobody is supporting you. But it doesn't have to be like that. Dr. Nisha Chellam joins us to share how functional medicine practitioners can build a thriving business that changes lives. She shares: Her journey to building a functional medicine practice How FM practitioners can work with traditional doctors How to get over fears of charging your patients Why it's important to follow your goals What your patients need to know about functional medicine The Journey to Building a Functional Medicine Practice Dr. Nisha Chellam began her career as an internist and hospitalist, where she was able to help patients walk out of the hospital often within one or two weeks of admission. But what Nisha began to notice was that these patients often returned to the hospital with the same symptoms–she felt like a failure each time a patient returned. Nisha believed she should be curing the patients and treating the root cause of their problems, so they wouldn't need to come back. After becoming semi-retired and working at the VA, Nisha treated a patient suffering from osteoporosis who self-medicated with holistic alternatives and reached osteopenia. It was the first time Nisha saw an alternative to traditional medicine, and she was hooked. This patient sparked her interest in functional medicine, and after years of considering it, Nisha left the world of conventional medicine and founded her functional medicine practice. Today, Nisha joins the FM Shift to discuss falling in love with medicine again, overcoming fears surrounding charging your patients, and how to educate your patients on functional medicine. She shares her perspective on the cost of healthcare and disease management. How to Charge Your Patients When it comes to charging your patients, it can be a challenge to know how to value your services as a functional medicine practitioner. With most insurance companies not covering FM practices, the money you charge can make or break your practice. But what if your fear of charing is simply a limiting belief? If health is a priority for your patients, they will be more likely to pay higher fees for their healthcare. So if your patients see results and their lives are changing for the better because of your treatment plans, what's stopping you from charging a premium price? After all, FM practitioners get to the root cause of the issue, often helping patients need less medical care or even helping them not need care at all. What's better health or being cured worth to your patients? What's not needing traditional medicine worth–or saving themselves from years of conventional, expensive treatments worth? If you believe that your practice is preventing your patients from spending thousands of dollars annually, what's stopping you from charging your worth? Educating Your Patients As a functional medicine practitioner, you're teaching your patients how to manage their health. It's important to make sure your patients know that your job is not like a traditional doctor, whose job is to look for and manage diseases. Your job is to help guide your patients to living their healthiest lives and treat the root causes of symptoms. This means that you may not diagnose a patient's problem because it isn't your job to diagnose and manage diseases. Since your job is so different from that of a traditional doctor, it is essential to inform your patients of the differences and encourage them to have a general practitioner in addition to your services. This way, you can avoid legal issues and ensure your patients receive the best medical care on all fronts. About Nisha Chellam Dr. Chellam is a “recovering physician.” What does that mean? Medical school is about learning about diseases and managing to slow the progress. What do patients want? Patients want to resolve their condition. A recovered physician moves from medications as the only option to treating illness. Instead, is there a way we can rebuild health and resolve the disease? Dr. Chellam struggled for years with Migraines and Hashimotos. She was able to resolve these by learning and applying functional medicine. And that is what she practices now. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and board-certified in Integrative and Holistic Medicine. When there is so much information, the goal of the practice is to simplify this information. The power of nutrition is best when we personalize it. Lifestyle changes are challenging. How do we systematize it? We do testing that helps identify your individual needs and optimize your health. Pursuing Natural Treatment Alison's bout with cancer and how it led to her career in oncology nutrition How Alison discovered that she was not a good candidate for chemo, radiation, and pharmaceuticals Why Alison decided to identify and address the root causes of her tumor instead of pursuing traditional treatments Why our patients always have the power and sovereignty to advocate for themselves How we can empower our patients by helping them overcome fear The core clinical approaches that Alison's clients use to treat themselves at home Pursuing Natural Treatment Our guest in this week's podcast is Alison Gannett. She is a cancer survivor with an amazing story that led to an entire career in customized oncology nutrition. As a virtual coach, Alison uses her clients' extensive blood chemistry lab testing, Nutrition Genome DNA profile, and detailed health history to create personalized nutrition and lifestyle plans that meet their goals. In this episode of the FM Shift, Alison joins us to share her story and talk about how functional medicine has empowered patients to pursue the best treatment options for them. Oncology Nutrition In 2013, Alison started experiencing strange episodes of memory loss and other symptoms that eventually led her to the E.R. She was diagnosed with an aggressive malignant brain tumor, which gives the average person about six months. She tried to make changes in her life to see what differences it would make, and that is what sparked her interest in oncology nutrition. Alison forewent chemo, radiation, and any other type of pharmaceutical treatment because there was no known cure and everything the doctors had recommended was just intended to extend her life a bit. Instead, she decided to address the root cause of her cancer and reverse what was causing it. We Are the CEO of Our Health If you looked at the big picture of Alison's tumor molecular report combined with her personal DNA and lab work, it showed that she was not a good candidate for chemo, radiation, and pharmaceuticals. But at the same time, when Alison wanted to look into oncology nutrition and pursue natural treatment options instead, many of her doctors wanted to drop her as a patient. It is important to remember that we are the CEOs of our health. As functional medicine providers, this means that despite the immense pressure in pharmaceutical medicine, our patients always have the sovereignty and the power to advocate for themselves. LINKS MENTIONED IN EPISODE 179- We’re LISTENER-SUPPORTED: - - - - SECRET HEADLINE: - - - - - - Loaded Mashed Cauliflower with Bacon & Green Onions(Recipe from the Ditch the Wheat cookbook by Carol Lovett Yield: 4 servings Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes I am a huge fan of pureed cauliflower. I like it even more than the mashed potatoes it’s often meant to replace. With this recipe, I took plain pureed cauliflower and kicked it up a notch by pairing it with bacon and green onions. You’re going to love it! Ingredients:1 medium head cauliflower (about 1¾ pounds), cored and chopped into 1-inchpieces½ medium onion, chopped¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter or ghee1 teaspoon fine sea salt4 slices bacon, cooked and finely chopped4 green onions, finely chopped Directions:1. Place the cauliflower and onion in a 3-quart pot with enough water to cover and bring to a boil. Boil for 15 minutes, or until the cauliflower is tender. Drain the water from the pot.2. Add the butter and salt to the cauliflower. Puree with a hand blender, or transfer the ingredients to a food processor and pulse until smooth.3. Reserve some of the bacon and green onions for garnish and stir the rest into the cauliflower puree. Top with the reserved bacon and green onions and serve immediately. Alison’s Homemade "To Live For" Keto Fat Bomb Brownies Melt in bowl over pan of simmering (but not boiling) water:1 pound grass-fed butter9.7 or 10 ounce 100% good baking chocolate broken into chunkspinch of saltTablespoon of Vanilla Remove from heat/waterStir into chocolate mixture - 2 cups of SwerveAdd optional 1-2 cups of pecans or walnutsIn separate bowl, beat 8 room-temperature pastured farm eggsVery slowly, drizzle in chocolate mixture while whisking vigorously (this keeps eggs from cooking)Mixture should thicken considerablyPour into TWO heavily greased 6x8 Pyrex glass containers (I love the ones with lids for storing later)Bake at 325 for about 25 minutes. brownies should be very giggly when you remove them.Cool in pans, top with lid, and refrigerate until use. You can also freeze one for later. For eating - cut into squares. Heat for 5 seconds in microwave or bring to room temperature. Top with whipped heavy cream or cream cheese.

alisongannett.com There are plenty of people out there talking about climate change. But how many are actually doing something about it. Even those of us who spend a lot of time outdoors can be guilty of contributing to the destruction of the natural environment we love. We fly in jets from place to place for the sake of adventure. And many of us are still driving low gas mileage carbon emitting SUVs. Our active lifestyles can put a really hurting on the planet. So that's why we can all  take a few lessons from professional skier and environmental advocate Alison Gannett. “I went to school for climate change and majored in education for environmental issues. And then I went to school for solar design for alternative home building,” she said. “At the same time I had a professional skiing career, doing crazy things like the X-Games and jumping off cliffs for a living.” But while she had two careers running parallel to one another Gannett suffered a devastating crash at the X-Game. Because she was badly injured and unable to compete several of her sponsors immediately dropped her. And that got Gannett to thinking. “I realized how shallow a lot of my ski industry sponsors were,” she said. “I decided wouldn't it be cool to partner with companies that have more at stake and care more about than just selling clothing.” Though many of the competitors and colleagues though she was crazy for chasing the more lucrative sponsorship deals Gannett changed her professional priorities to work instead with companies who share her environmentally conscious values. “I want to chase ethics,” she said. “I want to work with companies that have the same beliefs that I do.” It turns out that there are plenty of sponsors out there willing to support Gannett's mission to raise awareness for the ongoing crisis of climate change. Blending her interests in sustainable living and an active lifestyle, she's proven to be a very effective spokesperson for both. “As an athlete getting older I'd have to say that I have better sponsor relationships now than I ever did,” she said. “And now working with the Save Our Snow Foundation and working with schools, working with Congress, working with the White House I'm saving our snow, saving our planet and making the world a better place.” Allison Gannett is the kind of adventure athlete that walks her talk. While still leading an exciting life as a professional skier she's making a big difference in educating the general public on the realities of climate change. And Through her work at the Save Our Snow Foundation and on her own organic farm in Colorado she's showing us what we each can to do to slow it down.
