In this episode of The Visible Voices Podcast, Dr. William Li, a physician researcher and CEO founder of The Angiogenesis Foundation, joins to talk about starving cancer with food and more generally about food as medicine. We discuss the concept of angiogenesis, the impact of diet on cancer, and debunk common myths surrounding coffee, soy, and eggs. Dr. Li emphasizes the importance of nutrition education in medical training and shares recent discoveries about the health benefits of oats.  Will reflects on the challenges of communicating complex medical concepts to the public and the significance of empowering patients with knowledge about their health.  Some conversation learning points:Food is a powerful tool in preventing disease. Angiogenesis is a key factor in cancer development. Soy does not cause breast cancer; it may actually help. Nutrition education is lacking in medical training. High-quality eggs can be beneficial for health. Oats contain bioactives that promote gut health. Coffee has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Dietary fiber is essential for cancer patients. Empowering patients can lead to better health outcomes. There is a significant impact of food on brain health and overall well-being, with great importance placed on nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods. Unfortunately, nutrient levels of modern crops are declining, but regenerative agriculture is helping to restore food quality. Specific brain-boosting foods such as leafy greens, small cold-water fish, and polyphenol-rich plants have an ability to reduce neuroinflammation, protect against cognitive decline, and enhance mental clarity. And, ultimately, identifying whole food sources of essential nutrients will support your entire body. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Jeff Bland and Dr. William Li, practical tips on choosing the most nutrient-dense foods and how to harness their benefits for overall health. Dr. Jeff Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature's greatest innovations—the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Dr. Bland is advocating for the power of Immuno-Rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level, often through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. To get there, he is building a network of small farms and suppliers throughout the US that take a clear stance on regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and planetary health. Dr. Bland's career in health spans more than 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. He then spent three decades in the natural products industry, working alongside other pioneers. A lifelong educator, Dr. Bland has traveled the world many times over in his role as the “father of functional medicine.” In 1991, he and his wife, Susan, founded The Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2012, he founded another educational nonprofit called the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute. Dr. Bland is the author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life, as well as countless additional books and research papers. Dr. William Li is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. His groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity. His TED Talk, Can We Eat to Starve Cancer? has garnered more than 11 million views, and he has appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, Martha Stewart Live, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, Voice of America, and has presented at the Vatican's Unite to Cure conference. An author of over 100 scientific publications in leading journals such as Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and more, Dr. Li has served on the faculties of Harvard, Tufts, and Dartmouth Medical School. I am happy to connect with Dr. William Li today! He is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author. He is known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation, and his groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases. He is also a Ted-X speaker and the author of Eat to Beat Your Diet, one of my favorite books thus far this year.  Dr. Li's latest book is about what happens in the body, how it should operate, and the steps we can take to restore the body to its hard-wired level. We dive into how body fat impacts our health, the role of metabolism throughout our lifetime, the differences between the three fat-impacting hormones, including leptin, adiponectin, and resistin, and gender differences. We speak about new drugs like Ozempic and Semaglutide, the role of brown fat, the impact of the microbiome and specific bacteria, and we also discuss nutrition and lifestyle. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why Dr. Li chose this time to write his latest book.  Why Dr. Li believes 60 is the new 20. The four stages of metabolism all humans have been hard-wired to go through throughout their lifespan. How does excess body fat derail the metabolism, and how can we unleash our inner metabolism? Why is it better to eat slowly? Why should we learn to respect and tame our fat instead of hating or fearing it? Dr. Li shares his views on new prescription drugs like Ozempic and Semaglutide. Dr. Li shares some interesting facts about body fat. Changes that occur in our body fat distribution as we get older. How can we help our bodies fight excess body fat, let our inner metabolism come to the surface, and lower inflammation by being aware and mindful? How modern-day lifestyle choices contribute to metabolic disease. Dr. Li gets into the interplay between the gut microbiome and our metabolism and the role of Akkermansia.  Some everyday foods contain natural chemicals that can activate our body's health defenses, tame the metabolism and fight body fat. She spends much of her day coordinating cancer care for patients, researching off label drugs and providing up to date information for her thousands of followers in her Facebook group.   Her mission: To turn the oncology profession upside down.   Her bestselling blockbuster book “HOW TO STARVE CANCER AND THEN KILL IT WITH FERROPTOSIS'” is our area of topic today. https://www.drwardbond.com/how-to-starve-cancer-course.html
