In this show, Vanessa, a high-performing expert in keto diets (especially in her modified high-protein version) opens up about her personal health journey and answers all the questions you've ever had about the keto diet, including perhaps the most popular one: how can I safely and reliably reduce excess body fat, without starving and having long-term, adverse effects?  Vanessa also opens up about being a vegetarian, being a leader in the early days of the keto movement, what made her realize that further results could be had from increasing protein, why sustainably sourced protein can be such a life-changing transformation for some people, and all about her new whey protein supplement. Finally, we hear some interesting insights about parenting and prioritizing time during your children's formative years from Vanessa, who lives in Prague with her husband and son (and has another baby on the way), as well as how to use the keto diet as a tool, and how to design a long-term sustainable diet program for yourself.   TIMESTAMPS: Vanessa has journeyed from being a vegetarian to an expert on the keto diet while including the importance of protein for weight loss.  [00:43] As a world traveler, Vanessa points out that we are all so similar, no matter where you go, we all want the similar things. [04:20] Not until she challenged herself to do high protein experiment, did she realize that her whole life, as a vegetarian, had resulted in her being under-muscled. [17:46] Are you being more sustainable when you don't eat red meat? [20:15] When you consume a modified ketogenic diet with higher protein, you also get the appetite suppressing effects and satiety and the thermic effect of protein, which helps boost your metabolism as well. [26:26] What are the appetite suppressing effects when you're making ketones? [31:02] The biggest issue with traditional ketogenic macros is it's not optimal for building muscle.  It seems that 1.6 grams to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram body weight is optimal. [36:51] Females in particular seem to have been brainwashed to avoid eggs and red meats. How has Vanessa influenced that population? [41:49] There is this concept of protein leverage where we will overeat on energy calories from carbs and fat until we get our protein needs met. [43:18] You can have a natural wholesome whole foods diet even when you have budget concerns. [51:53] Active athletes have a risk of under-fueling. "Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health disorder in which you can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance — a flaw that appears minor or can't be seen by others. But you may feel so embarrassed, ashamed and anxious that you may avoid many social situations.   When you have body dysmorphic disorder, you intensely focus on your appearance and body image, repeatedly checking the mirror, grooming or seeking reassurance, sometimes for many hours each day. Your perceived flaw and the repetitive behaviors cause you significant distress, and impact your ability to function in your daily life. You may seek out numerous cosmetic procedures to try to "fix" your perceived flaw. Afterward, you may feel temporary satisfaction or a reduction in your distress, but often the anxiety returns and you may resume searching for other ways to fix your perceived flaw. Treatment of body dysmorphic disorder may include cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. Symptoms Signs and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder include: Being extremely preoccupied with a perceived flaw in appearance that to others can't be seen or appears minor Strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly or deformed Belief that others take special notice of your appearance in a negative way or mock you Engaging in behaviors aimed at fixing or hiding the perceived flaw that are difficult to resist or control, such as frequently checking the mirror, grooming or skin picking Attempting to hide perceived flaws with styling, makeup or clothes Constantly comparing your appearance with others Frequently seeking reassurance about your appearance from others Having perfectionist tendencies Seeking cosmetic procedures with little satisfaction Avoiding social situations Preoccupation with your appearance and excessive thoughts and repetitive behaviors can be unwanted, difficult to control and so time-consuming that they can cause major distress or problems in your social life, work, school or other areas of functioning. You may excessively focus over one or more parts of your body. The feature that you focus on may change over time. The most common features people tend to fixate about include: Face, such as nose, complexion, wrinkles, acne and other blemishes Hair, such as appearance, thinning and baldness Skin and vein appearance Breast size Muscle size and tone Genitalia A preoccupation with your body build being too small or not muscular enough (muscle dysmorphia) occurs almost exclusively in males. Insight about body dysmorphic disorder varies. You may recognize that your beliefs about your perceived flaws may be excessive or not be true, or think that they probably are true, or be absolutely convinced that they're true. The more convinced you are of your beliefs, the more distress and disruption you may experience in your life. When to see a doctor Shame and embarrassment about your appearance may keep you from seeking treatment for body dysmorphic disorder. But if you have any signs or symptoms, see your primary care provider or a mental health professional. Body dysmorphic disorder usually doesn't get better on its own. If left untreated, it may get worse over time, leading to anxiety, extensive medical bills, severe depression, and even suicidal thoughts and behavior." In this episode, It's my pleasure to interview Vanessa Spina Vanessa is the author of her current Best Selling Keto Essentials and is an avid and passionate international speaker about the ketogenic diet and the founder of Ketogenic Girl. When she started what she thought was proper Keto she began to strangely gain weight. She started first on her own and then was following ketogenic meal plans from a source she trusted so gaining weight was the last thing she expected to happen. She knew something was off- clothes were somehow all shrinking... simultaneously. I was doing what I thought was a good Keto diet so I didn't ever expect to gain 20 lbs. Since then, she has refined the process of the ketogenic diet, how it works not only for her but also for the people who join the 28-day ketogenic girl challenge. In this interview, we talk about how she transitioned from finance in the world of health and nutrition, how much work it takes to create a cookbook (including 12 iterations of a particular recipe), how a certain food group may be the reason why your weight loss is stalling, and the things she has learned since 2004 about the ketogenic diet.
