To achieve a shallow depth of field in your photographs and create that beautiful background blur (bokeh) effect, follow these steps: 1. Use a Wide Aperture. 2. Use a Large Sensor Camera. 3. Get Closer to Your Subject. 4. Use a Telephoto Lens. 5. Increase the Focal Length. 6. Focus on the Subject. 7. Lower ISO and Use a Tripod. 8. Use ND Filters. 9. Shoot in Aperture Priority or Manual Mode. 10. Experiment and Practice. Remember that the exact settings and techniques may vary depending on your camera and lens, so it's essential to familiarise yourself with your specific gear. Additionally, the distance between your subject and the background, as well as the quality of the background (e.g., distant lights or foliage), can also impact the quality of the bokeh effect. I'm looking to have more guests on the podcast to provide you with more value.  With that in mind, if you work within the creative space and would like to have a conversation about what you do and the benefits it offers others, get in touch and let's have a conversation. Tog-Talk Episode 37: Going ManualHost: Kevin Ahronson, Founder of Hampshire School of PhotographyIn this solo episode of Tog-Talk, Kevin Ahronson addresses a common question for beginner photographers: “How do I move from auto mode to manual mode?” Kevin, with over five decades of photography experience and a seasoned photography teacher, breaks down the basics of manual shooting.Kevin explains that while auto mode is great for beginners, manual mode offers far more control. The challenge is in understanding the “exposure triangle” — the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Kevin carefully walks listeners through each element, illustrating how they work together to achieve correct exposure. He recommends learning in stages, suggesting that aperture priority mode is an ideal stepping stone for photographers looking to gradually transition to manual.Throughout the episode, Kevin emphasises the importance of mastering the camera and choosing the right mode for the job. While manual mode gives full control, aperture priority is often quicker and ideal for many scenarios. Kevin shares personal anecdotes from his years of shooting, including situations where manual mode is indispensable, like wildlife photography, where consistency is key.Towards the end, Kevin recommends his Introduction to Photography Workshop on November 9th, 2024, and discusses his Photography Masterclass, a year-long course designed to develop both technical skills and creative vision.Key Points:•The exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO•The benefits of aperture priority mode as a middle ground•Situations where manual mode excels•Upcoming workshops and masterclasses at Hampshire School of PhotographyLinks:•Introduction to Photography Workshop•Photography MasterclassJoin the Hampshire Photography Network on Facebook for more tips and discussions!Got a Photography Question? Photography Basics No.5 Camera Shooting Modes

Believe it or not, there are more ways to take a photo than by simply leaving the camera switched to AUTO.AUTO mode is great for beginners and those who just want to shoot snaps, but if you want to take control of your camera and unleash your creative potential, you need to come out of AUTO and explore some of the other shooting modes.Common Camera Shooting ModesDepending on your camera (because not all cameras are the same), your will normally have a choice of:AUTOProgram Mode (not all cameras have this)Aperture Priority ModeShutter Priority ModeManual ModeProgram Mode Program Mode is useful, although for some reason it's not that popular.  I've rarely met anyone who uses it.  It's just like shooting in AUTO but... it allows you to override some of the camera's settings.  This gives you some very useful creative control.Aperture Priority ModeThe world's most popular shooting mode, used by more photographers than any other mode.  It's fast, easy and you still have a lot of additional control to override the camera's settings if the image needs tweaking.  In this mode, you chose the aperture (you give priority to the aperture) and the camera does the rest.  It's a kind of 'semi-automatic' mode, working out what shutter speed to shoot at... based on the aperture you've chosen.  Choosing the aperture is important if you want to control your Depth -of-Field (how much of your image is going to be in focus).Shutter Priority ModeThis is the opposite of Aperture Priority.  You choose the shutter and the camera will pick an aperture.  Often used by sport and wildlife photographers, or anyone else shooting fast-moving subjects.Manual ModeOften thought of by many to be the shooting mode of choice for professionals.  But they would be wrong.  Granted, it is probably more popular amongst pros, most of them still shoot in Aperture Priority most of the time.  Respective Pros & ConsThere are advantages and disadvantages in all of these modes, familiarity with them could help you pick the right one for the right situation.  No one single mode is best for everything, or for every camera type.  For instance, I shoot mostly in Aperture Priority when using my DSLR cameras, but mostly Manual when using my mirrorless cameras.  However, I am happy to switch between modes as the job requires. Some of the courses and workshops run at our training centre in Fleet, HampshireIntroduction To Photography (1-day Workshop)Run four times a year, this one-day photography workshop will equip you with the knowledge you need to move from simply being a camera-owner… to becoming a real photographer !Whether you're photographing your kids, snapping your holidays or you're hoping to progress your photography to a more creative level, you'll still need a solid grasp of the basics. The Photography MasterclassStudents on the Photography Masterclass will immerse themselves in photography for a whole year, working as part of the larger group but also in smaller groups of 2 or 3, supporting and assisting each other. This is a ten-module photography course with photo-assignments between sessions.  Each session lasts three hours and will include time to examine assignment images and take part in practicals (where appropriate).

The best way to produce bokeh is by using lenses that have wide apertures, low f/ numbers like f/2.8, and f/1.8. If you add separating the subject from the background method the bokeh will be even better. This is something you need to do and keep practicing. Due to popular demand, The Fotobug guys demonstrate an actual timelapse capture using the Neewer Motorized slider. In recent photography news, Duke University researchers have created an AI software program that can create a face from a blurred image, although it is A face, but not the actual image of the person in the blurred image.  Olympus is in negotiation to sell off its imaging business to Japan Industrial Partners who plan to keep the Olympus name on the cameras. Sadly, The Black Hills Photo Shootout 10th anniversary workshop weekend in South Dakota has been postponed this September due to concerns over the Corona virus. H&Y Revoring has a Kickstarter project running for a variable  step-up adapter ring for filters. A 72 year old woman was gored in Yellowstone National Park for getting too close to a bison to take a picture.  Due to popular demand, Fred and Jim capture a timelapse sequence using the Neewer Motorized Slider.  The timelapse captures a sunset at a local park using a Canon 7D MKII camera.  The camera was set on Aperture Priority and the Neewer app set the lowest trigger setting at 1 sec. so it would simply fire the camera and not control the shutter speed.  The slider was placed close to the ground to maximize the movement effect (since the slider is under 3' in length). The final sequence was turned into a video using LRTimelapse - our go-to timelapse software program! Not a great timelapse, but the important take away is the settings to use to capture a timelapse sequence!  If you are capturing a timelapse sequence after dark, then set the camera on bulb setting and let the motor controller control the shutter speed!  Since the minimum setting is 1 second, it isn't practical to control the shutter with the controller and therefore simply use it to trigger the shutter and let the camera control the shutter speed!

Rob Hull                   If you or someone you love is new to Photography, and wants to take great photographs, today's conversation on The PhotoTellers is for you! Photographer and Author Rob Hull has written the book on the subject. Rob joins the show today to talk about his own history in Photography--from his first experience in the 8th grade, to a career at IBM & publishing, then to teaching Photography at a local college. How did all of those elements combine to create this book? That's what you'll learn. You'll also hear about his relationship with the illustrious Tony Corbell. They're doing some pretty exciting work together, traveling the world to train Photographers in all ilks of the craft. Be certain that you CLICK HERE to see where they'll be, and also sign up for the weekly educational blog. If you've missed my previous conversations with Tony, here's a link to one of them: http://firesidenetwork.com/this-photographer-discovered-a-secret-hidden-within-the-original-american-flag/ Is Rob's book written for the seasoned pro? Is it appropriate for your/your friends' skill level? The following excerpt from the conversation explains: BILL: Who should read this book? ROB: This book is really targeted for the beginner, or if you know somebody who may have been photographing for a little while. It's certainly not for the pro-market. It covers all of the camera controls up to [excluding] Manual. We talk about Manual, but we don't get into a lot of the metering techniques and all that for Manual photography. So if you want to understand all of the automated settings in your camera, it helps people understand what happens when they change a different setting. That could be in like Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, things like that. But then a lot of our cameras that also have specialty modes like Sport Mode . . . Beach Mode, and stuff like that. What this book does a very good job of doing is helping you understand exactly what your camera is doing, and how does it determine the exposures for those different settings? Because the more somebody understands what's happening when they set those controls, the more they're going to know what the cameras strengths and weaknesses are. A camera can't do everything, but people need to understand and be able to figure out: "When is the camera to be able to handle this well, and when do I have to take over and do something else?"

Aperture Priority Mode Hey Photo World! I need to clear up one small detail from the last episode on Shutter Priority. I never mentioned that many of you may see is as "Tv" mode or "Time Value". This is the standard for Canon as well as a few other cameras out there. Today I go over the Aperture Priority Mode or as you Canon users will see "Av" or "Aperture Value". Let me cut to the chase because I am going to sound like a broken record if I don't just lay this out there now. These modes or any modes for that matter are useless, unless you try them out and see where they can benefit your photography and work. I still feel Manual it he best way to learn and shoot. You get to a point in your photography where complete control is necessary and extremely beneficial to your image making. With that said,  Aperture Priority Mode is as restricting as the Shutter Priority Mode. You may engage the option to select your ISO or leave it to the camera, but this is only to get "correct exposure". That is a whole other topic itself. Happy Shooting! AE-L/AF-L or AF-ON AE-L/AF-L AE-L AF-ON There are also other, detailed, options for these functions. AE Lock only, AE Lock (Reset on release), AE Lock (Hold) and AF Lock only. You may have to set a function button for this same option but not have a dedicated AE-L or AF-L button. AE-L stands for Automatic Exposure Lock or Auto Exposure Lock. AF-L stands for Automatic Focus Lock or Auto Focus Lock. The way this button works is you may compose an image, press the shutter release half way down to catch your focus, then press and hold the AE-L/AF-L, remove your finger from the shutter release, re-compose your image, and then release the shutter to take your picture. As far as I can tell there is very little use for the AE-L (Auto Exposure Lock). The use of this function suggests you are shooting with an automated exposure mode; Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, or Program modes. Furthermore, this would indicate you are not shooting in Manual. Now I understand the Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and Program modes, but these are specialty modes that should only be used under the right conditions. If you are like me and shoot in Manual just about all of the time this AE-L/AF-L or AF-ON function serves little to no purpose. In fact, I find it to be a much slower process to use the AE-L/AF-L button. Happy Shooting! Get your FREE business coaching call with Rob! Sign up for one of the last few spots here!
