#563 Kimberly Irish is a community member and moderator of the Beginner Photography Podcast Facebook group. Kim, based in Wisconsin, shares her journey from picking up a camera out of necessity to document her family's life, to becoming a sought-after photographer who now primarily shoots weddings. The discussion explores the evolution of Kim's skills, her approach to learning both technical and creative aspects of photography, and her philosophy on gear upgrades, creativity, and client relationships. The episode is both an inspiring personal story and a practical guide for beginners, emphasizing the importance of consistent practice, embracing imperfections, and cultivating one's own style.KEY TOPICS COVEREDGetting Started & Overcoming Beginner Struggles - Kim's entry into photography was motivated by wanting to capture her children's lives on a tight budget. Key takeaway: Embrace the learning curve, practice daily, and accept imperfections like grain as part of the process.Gear Choices & When to Upgrade - The discussion details Kim's decision-making process about purchasing her first prime lens, the importance of buying gear to match specific needs, and the benefits of buying used equipment. Takeaway: Don't rush into expensive upgrades—let real photographic needs drive your purchases, and don't shy away from secondhand gear.Creativity & Building a Consistent Style - Kim talks about attempting to push her creativity by using tools like the Daily Photo Challenge and focusing on self-evaluation rather than external comparison. She shares her methods for developing her style organically and offers insight into the value of authenticity and daily practice. Takeaway: Consistency, self-reflection, and deliberate experimentation fuel creative growth.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhat challenges did you face when you started photography, and how did you overcome them? How do you decide when it's time for a gear upgrade? What factors influence your choices? In what ways do you push yourself creatively, and how do you avoid getting stuck comparing your work to others? What are the benefits and challenges of using themed photo challenges to accelerate your learning?RESOURCES:Visit Kimberly Irish's Website - https://www.weeirishphotography.com/Follow Kimberly Irish on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeirishphotography/Sign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.com Download your free copy of46 Creative Photo Ideas to Get You Out of a Rutat https://creativeimageideas.com/Connect with Raymond! Whether you're a beginner or an experienced photographer, this episode offers valuable insights and tips to take your photography skills to the next level.Sheila Bragg grew up spending her summers in Ohio with her family's portrait studio where she developed a passion for photography. She always carried a camera with her and loved taking pictures of everything, but it wasn't until she found a podcast that explained aperture and shutter speed in a way that made sense to her that she started shooting manually. Now she can adjust her settings without looking at the camera and even experiments with underexposing her photos for a different effect. So now we're looking at the third piece of the puzzle, of what is traditionally referred to as the Exposure Triangle. When you combine the three elements of the Exposure Triangle, they interact with each other in what's often referred to as the law of reciprocity.  This reciprocating relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO allows us to take control of the light coming into the camera - and we chose which of the three elements will take priority, which side effects will dominate and which do not. What actually is ISO?I meet very few photographers who fully understand what ISO is.  I meet even fewer who know what the initials ISO stand for.   ISO is an independent, non-governmental international organisation that looks after thousands of standards worldwide.  Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Organization  for Standardization controls over 24,000 standards (at the time of writing) from health and the environment, to electrical engineering and telecommunications, and of course... photography.  Its range of influence on world standards is huge and from our perspective, any camera manufacturer, wishing to produce a new camera sensor, has to follow ISO's guidelines to comply with international standards.Photography has a number of standards controlled by ISO, but perhaps ISO12232:2019 is the one we're most interested in today.  It specifies:'the method for assigning and reporting ISO speed ratings, ISO speed latitude ratings, standard output sensitivity values, and recommended exposure index values, for digital still cameras. It is applicable to both monochrome and colour digital still cameras'Back to our cameras ISO replaced the old film-speed rating ASA (American Standards Association) around 1987.  Back in the day, you would buy a roll of film which had a fixed speed rating (eg. ASA100, ASA200, or ASA400) and you were locked into that rating.  Come the arrival of digital cameras, we found that we were able to change that speed rating (or ISO) to virtually whatever we wanted, and a whole new era of flexible exposure control began.  This week's Tog-Talk is quite a short one, but I think you will find it interesting.  If you have any questions, write to me at: info@gohsp.comSome links from this week's Tog-TalkIntroduction To Photography (1-day Workshop)Run four times a year, this one-day photography workshop will equip you with the knowledge you need to move from simply being a camera-owner… to becoming a real photographer !Whether you're photographing your kids, snapping your holidays or you're hoping to progress your photography to a more creative level, you'll still need a solid grasp of the basics.PLEASE NOTE: All course fees will be going up on 1st April (2022).  And no, this is not an April fool !  If you register for any course before that date, you will get it at current prices. Photography Assessment Tool:Use this online tool to assess your photography knowledge and get a snapshot of your strengths and weaknesses.Hampshire School of Photography (HSP)Main website for Training Courses

In the last few episodes, we discussed aperture, ISO and shutter speed as separate things, but I also mentioned that they must work together to create a properly exposed image. This may sound quite daunting, but I shall try to explain it in terms that are easy to visualize. It's essential that you learn it, though. Once you understand how the three cornerstones of the triangle work together, you can start getting artistic with your images, and bending the rules. The Exposure Triangle Put simply, aperture, ISO and shutter speed make up the three sides of the triangle. These three work together to control the amount of light you need to create a properly exposed photograph. If one of these three sides of the triangle changes, (if you need to change your aperture, for instance) one or both of the others must also change to keep your exposure correct. Read more about the exposure triangle here: https://photographyandfriends.com/what-is-the-exposure-triangle/ About this podcast: Are you a beginner photographer who wants to learn how to improve your photography? This is the perfect photography podcast for you. In this podcast series, you'll learn how to expose with your camera - using the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. You'll learn about composition, and what it takes to compose a better image using photography rules of thumb, as well as knowing how to break those rules. And finally, you'll learn how to tell stories with your photos. Episode 9. In the "Know Your Camera" series that will be intertwined between regular episodes, we take a deep dive into understanding the basics of our cameras. Why? Even if you are familiar with the basic functions, sometimes there are little nuggets that change our understanding or we just need to hear something or talk about a topic we haven't addressed in a while that can change how we work with our cameras. Knowing your camera is of course the most basic element related to what goes on behind the scenes of any photoshoot. You may also had the experience of something seemingly going wrong with your camera or you can't make a basic adjustment only to then realize it's because you accidentally touched or changed a setting. It happens to all of us. The better we know our cameras, the less likely to panic when this happens. In this episode we talk about one of the fundamentals of photography, Aperture. Aperture is the key to giving your photos your desired look and giving your photos your signature style whether you're a hobbyist, semi-pro, or pro. But in order to do that, you have to have a strong foundation and understanding of Aperture and how it works. Aperture is one of the elements of the Exposure Triangle but today, when we talk about Aperture we're only going to talk about Aperture. In future episodes, we will combine the elements of the exposure triangle-aperture, shutter speed, and ISO-plus other elements such as white balance and flash. But for now, we will discuss each element independent of all others. I've found that this is the point where most people get lost: when someone decides that these elements are so basic they can be understood just in a few minutes. While that may be true for many, it's not true for all, including me. It took me a long time get "it". My hope is that learning it this way will save you time and having you shooting like a pro in the fraction of the time it took me. Lastly, you may notice that my speech is slow (slower than usual) and deliberate. I wanted to make sure not to rush and to give you the best opportunity to learn about Aperture and to learn about it properly. So if it sounds deliberately slow it is! Please click here for the show notes that include visualization to help you further understand about Aperture. Webpage

The exposure triangle is a fundamental part of understanding exposure and how your camera captures a scene. This is what we are talking about in the episode today in part 1 of our Fundamentals of Photography. If you've never taken your camera out of auto, this episode is for you!If you are even somewhat unsure of what shutter speed, aperture or ISO are and how they work, this episode is for you!If you have used a camera for years, but are thinking it's time for a refresher, this episode is for you!Basically, if you want to take great photos, you need to know this. The exposure triangle is three camera settings that are critical to how your camera captures the scene in front of you.Shutter SpeedThis is probably the most important aspect to understand in the triangle. Because if your shutter isn’t fast enough to give you a sharp image, nothing you do in post can save that.Shutter speed is a measure of how long the shutter on your camera stays open. This controls how long light is hitting your sensor. Basically, when the shutter is open, your camera is recording time. The faster the shutter speed means the less time the shutter is open for, meaning less light will hit the sensor, resulting in lower exposure. The slower the shutter speed means the more time the shutter is open for, meaning more light will hit the sensor and result in higher exposure. So fast shutter speed means less light, slow shutter speed means more light.Shutter speed also controls how your camera records motion.faster shutter = frozen movementslower shutter = more movementApertureAlso known as f-stops or f-numbersThis is a measure of how open or closed the lens’ iris is.Controls light hitting the sensor and some depth of fieldWide ApertureLarge opening in lens' irisSmall f-numbers (1.4, 2.0, 2.8 etc...)More light hitting sensor because of bigger openingLess depth of fieldNarrow ApertureSmall opening in lens' irisHigh f-numbers (11, 16, 22)Less light hitting sensor because of a smaller openingHigher depth of field ISOThis comes from the days of film, where we had way less control over the ISO. At that time it was the sensitivity of the film you used. Today, we view it as the sensitivity of the sensor to light. Although, technically we’re not controlling the sensitivityHigher ISO valuesLess light needed for photosMore grain in imagesLower ISO valuesMore light needed for photosLess grain in imagesThis is the exposure triangle. We go over this more in-depth in the episode, so give it a listen and let us know what you think! Also, don't forget to get the freebie from the website that gives you a cheat sheet to the exposure triangle in the field.

Understanding the exposure triangle helps photographers capture better images and allows them to push their creativity to the next level. So what is the exposure triangle? Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. The aperture is a measurement of how open or closed the lens is to light. Shutter speed is a measurement of how long the shutter within your camera stays open and how long the sensor in your camera body is exposed to light. ISO is a measurement of how sensitive the digital sensor in your camera body is to light. In this episode, we go into detail over how each of these affects the creative process of image-making. The Exposure Triangle Photography and video are important components of instructional design. As we look at some of the things that photography can help us with regarding good visual design overall as well as good instructional design it would be a mistake not to share one of the more important photography concepts. This is the exposure triangle. We’ve all seen images that were overexposed and a bit too bright and images that were a bit underexposed or a bit dark. So today I wanted to discuss the three elements that make up the exposure triangle in photography. The first element is the shutter speed. This is literally the speed at which the shutter moves out of the way and lets light pass through to the film or these days to the light sensor. The slower the shutter speed the more light but also the more likely that images seem blurry due to movement. The second element is the aperture. The camera’s aperture works just like the pupil in our eyes, it opens and closes to let in more or less light. We discussed this a few days ago when we discussed the depth of field, the trade-off with light and the aperture has to do with the depth of field your image sill have. The third element is ISO. ISO can be a bit confusing but it refers to the light sensitivity of your film or the artificial light enhancement done in the computer part of your digital camera.

ISO, aperture, or shutter speed? Question from Bjoern, Hamburg, Germany   Marco, I shoot a lot of landscape and long exposure photography with my Fuji X-T2. The camera is fairly light but I still need to bring along a heavy metal tripod because I often shoot in windy conditions and some long exposures are unsharp due to wind shake. I don’t want to bring an even heavier tripod along. Is there a way that I can get more stable shots and can reduce some weight by switching to a carbon tripod, or is weight the only thing that can counter the wind and shake? Question from Roberto in Napoli, Italy   Inspired by your latest More Gear Show I want to bring as little photo gear as possible on my vacation this year. I usually take an ND grad and a polarizing filter with me, but was wondering if I can leave them at home and achieve the same results in LightRoom? Today, I have my first question for you. I’m battling with sensor dust. The sensor cleaning inside the camera does not seem to get rid of all the dust. What’s the best way to clean my sensor?
