Asara B'Teves marks the day Nevuchadnezar, King of Bavel, laid siege to Yerushalayim — the beginning of the Churban. But on this very same day is the yahrtzeit of Reb Nosson of Breslov (December 20, 1844), the primary talmid of Rebbe Nachman, the one who revealed and transmitted Rebbe Nachman's redemptive Torah to the world. This is no coincidence. In this shiur, we explore the deep contrast and connection between the beginning of destruction and the beginning of geulah. Rebbe Nachman taught that his Torah is the “beginning of redemption,” and Reb Nosson embodied that message—especially on a day that represents siege, darkness, and concealment. We examine how the siege of Bavel continues today—not only through the outside world of sheker, confusion, and distraction, but through the inner siege of the yetzer hara, which tries to define us by externals, past failures, and despair.Through Breslov teachings, we uncover the nekuda tova—the inner point within every Jew that is untouchable by sin, untouched by exile, and always connected to Hashem.Asara B'Teves is not only about mourning the past—it's about discovering where redemption truly begins.#AsaraBTeves #Breslov #RebbeNachman #RebNosson #Geulah #Churban #JewishTorah #InnerAvodah #NekudaTova #YetzerHara #Emunah #Redemption #TorahThoughts

The podcast begins with a friendly greeting between the host and guest, Asara. They discuss the nature of the podcast being audio-only and the time difference between their locations. The host mentions the impressive number of episodes produced and the diverse audience demographics, primarily from the US, with a mix of men and women aged 20 to 55. Asara, the guest, is introduced as the founder of the Juicy 100 Nation, a community for women committed to living vibrant lives well into their later years. She shares her inspiration for creating this community, which stems from her experiences meeting inspiring older women during her travels in her 20s. These women, despite being in their 50s, were living joyful, independent lives, which sparked Asara's curiosity and led her to study the factors contributing to such vitality. Asara emphasizes the importance of women saying “yes” to their own needs and desires, believing that personal transformation can lead to broader societal changes. She combines wellness with world travel and community, aiming to live a fulfilling life beyond 100 years. She also discusses the concept of a “delicious life,” where each woman customizes her life to what brings her joy and satisfaction.

A Daily Dose of Chassidus with Rabbi Shmuel Braun
Today is Asarah B'Tevet , a public fast day, the same day that Nebuchadnezzar's army sieged Yerushalayim , which ultimately led to the destruction of the first Bet HaMikdash . The Abudarham writes that this fast is unique compared with other fasts mentioned by the Nevi'im . The reason is because if they would fall out on Shabbat, they would be pushed off. But if Asarah B'Tevet would fall out on Shabbat, we would fast even on Shabbat, like Yom Kippur. This is because the Navi says, regarding Asarah B'Tevet , we must fast בעצם היום הזה - on that very day. We need to understand why this is so. After all, Asarah B'Tevet was just the beginning of the siege. It took another two and a half years for them to destroy the Bet HaMikdash . If Tisha B'Av , which commemorates the actual Churban , doesn't override Shabbat, why would Asarah B'Tevet be stricter? It's true that, in practice, Asarah B'Tevet will never fall out on Shabbat, but it does fall out on Friday. And hence, we are fasting today, going into Shabbat, rather than pushing off the fast. The Chatam Sofer explained, it is on Asarah B'Tevet that the Heavenly Court decides the fate of the Bet HaMikdash each and every year. On the year in which it was destroyed, it was on Asarah B'Tevet that the final verdict was given. And every year, the Heavenly Court reassembles on this day and reassesses if the Bet HaMikdash should remain destroyed. We know, in general, we're not allowed to fast on Shabbat because we have a mitzvah of oneg Shabbat, taking delight in the day. However, if someone is disturbed by a dream that he had on Lel Shabbat, and he wants to fast on Shabbat because of it, he's allowed to. Since the fast has the power to overturn something negative, and it will relieve the person's distress, the fast is considered oneg Shabbat for him more than eating. It is with this in mind that we can explain why the fast of Asarah B'Tevet would apply even on Shabbat. Since the Heavenly Court is convening on this specific day and through a fast, we have the power to annul the potential unfortunate judgment of keeping the Bet HaMikdash in ruins, we would fast in the hope of reversing it and getting a judgment to rebuild the Bet HaMikdash . This would be our greatest oneg . This means there is so much riding on this day of Asarah B'Tevet . And at this time especially, we are yearning for the Mashiach , and we should take advantage of the day with extra tefila and teshuva . Every single person's avoda counts. The Mesilat Yesharim writes in perek 19 that a person should never say, “Who am I to pray for the Geula and the rebuilding of the Bet HaMikdash ?” Because every single person has their own share in avodat Hashem. And what one person could accomplish, nobody else in the world could do. It is only a compilation of every single person's avoda and tefila that is going to merit the rebuilding of the Bet HaMikdash . The Mesilat Yesharim writes further that the requesting of the Geula serves a purpose in its own right. Hashem wants us to want Him to reveal His glory and show the world who He is. The fact that we're interested in Hashem's kavod is a great avoda and something we should strive to want. Today is the perfect day to request it. The Beit Din in Shamayim is in session right now and every person's tefila will help. May we be zocheh to the fulfillment of the pasuk, כה אמר יהוה צבאות צום הרביעי וצום החמישי וצום השביעי וצום העשירי יהיה לבית יהודה לששון ולשמחה ולמועדים טובים . Shabbat Shalom.
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
There is a custom among Kabbalists to wear Tefillin while praying Minha, but the consensus among Kabbalistic scholars is that Tefillin should not be worn during Minha on Ereb Shabbat, particularly when one is praying Minha close to the onset of Shabbat. The reason for this exception is that as the sanctity of Shabbat is setting in, Tefillin are inappropriate. This view is cited by the Be'er Heteb commentary to the Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 37:3) in the name of the Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria of Safed, 1534-1572) and the Shelah (Rav Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz, 1558-1630). The Kaf Ha'haim (Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) writes (in Se'if Katan 100) that this was the custom of the Kabbalists in Yeshivat Bet-El. This is also the opinion of Rav Hida, Petah Hadebir, and Shelah Hakadosh. Although the Sefer Mekor Hayim says to wear Tefillin during Minha on Friday afternoon, Rabbi Avner Efgin in his Sefer Dibre Shalom volume 5 writes regarding that opinion and concludes that it is clear according to the Rashash that one should not wear Tefillin on Ereb Shabbat including the fast of Asara Be'Tebet. Although the Shulhan Aruch rules explicitly that Tefillin may be worn on Ereb Shabbat until the period of Ben Ha'shemashot (the time between sunset and nightfall), the commentators explain that he is referring to somebody who had been wearing Tefillin since the morning. One should not, however, put on Tefillin in the afternoon on Ereb Shabbat. This discussion becomes especially relevant when the fast of Asara Be'Tebet falls on Friday (as it does this year 2013, 5774). The custom in our community is to wear Tefillin during Minha on a fast day, and the question thus arises as to whether Tefillin should be worn when a fast is observed on Ereb Shabbat. Rav Haim Palachi (Turkey, 1788-1869), in his work Hikekeh Leb (vol. 1, Orah Haim 2), writes that Tefillin should not be worn during Minha on a fast day when it falls on Friday, just like on ordinary Fridays. This is the ruling followed by Hacham David Yosef, in his Halacha Berura (vol. 2, p. 190). Summary: Although the custom in our community is to wear Tefillin during Minha on a fast day, if a fast day falls on Friday, Tefillin should not be worn during Minha.
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
On rare occasions, the fast of Asara Be'Tebet falls on Friday. Normally, there is a special Misva to taste the foods one prepares for Shabbat to ensure that they taste flavorful and will be enjoyed on Shabbat. The Rabbis teach that the value of this practice is alluded to in our Shabbat prayer service, where we recite, "To'ameha Hayim Zachu" – "those who taste it [Shabbat] have earned life," indicating that those who taste the Shabbat food when preparing it is rewarded with long life. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) writes (Parashat Lech-Lecha, Shena Sheniya, 7) that when Asara Be'Tebet falls on Friday, one should observe this practice by tasting the Shabbat foods in one's mouth and then expectorating them, without swallowing them. As putting food in one's mouth without swallowing is allowed on fast days, this is the way one can observe this Halacha when Friday is a fast day. When Asara Be'Tebet falls on Friday, Vidui is not recited after Minha as it is on ordinary fast days. Rather, the congregation proceeds from the repetition of the Amida to "Yehi Hashem" and then to "Hashem Malach," like on a normal Ereb Shabbat. If one prays at home on Friday night when Asara Be'Tebet falls on Friday, or if a congregation prays early, they must ensure not to eat until Set Ha'kochavim (nightfall). Normally, a Minyan that is held at the usual time will finish the Friday night service after Set Ha'kochavim. But if not, one must remember not to recite Kiddush and eat until after Set Ha'kochavim. Additionally, every Ereb Shabbat, it is proper to verbally declare before sundown that one accepts "Tosefet Shabbat" – some extra time that he adds onto Shabbat. One must make an effort to remember do this also when Asara Be'Tebet falls on Ereb Shabbat, and thus Minha is longer and might end very close to sunset. Summary: When Asara Be'Tebet falls on Friday, one should taste the Shabbat foods when preparing them without swallowing. Meaning, one should taste the food in his mouth and then expectorate, such that the food is not swallowed. Vidui is not recited after Minha on this day, as it is on ordinary fast days. One must ensure not to recite Kiddush and begin eating until after sundown.
