Mūsdienās mums karnevāla nosaukums saistās ar Venēciju, Brazīliju un katoliskām zemēm tepat Eiropā. Reti iedomājamies, ka pirms vairāk kā 500 gadiem, karnevāls bija ļoti ierasta tradīcija tepat Rīgā. Gan mūsdienās, gan viduslaikos karnevāls notika tieši pirms lielā gavēņa, kas sākās 40 dienas pirms Lieldienām. Lai gavēni godam izturētu, nedēļu pirms tā pieņemts pieēsties, dzīrot, dejot un ālēties, maskējoties jeb darīt gandrīz visu, kas pretējs gavēņa laika atturībai. Viduslaikos to, ko mūsdienās saucam par karnevālu, Rīgā sauca par vastlāvi, kas viduslejasvācu valodā nozīmēja gavēņa priekšvakaru. Par vastlāvja svinībām viduslaiku Rīgā visvairāk zinām no Rīgas Melngalvju brālības dokumentos pierakstītā – viņu šrāgām, rēķinu grāmatām, kā arī detalizētajiem karnevāla noteikumiem no 16. gadsimta sākuma. Kaut arī visplašāk vastlāvi viduslaiku Rīgā svinēja tieši turīgi tirgotāji no Melngalvju brālības un Lielās Ģildes, kā arī pilsētas rātskungi, domājams, ka mazāka apjoma svinības noturēja arī citi pilsētas iedzīvotāji un brālības. Viduslaiku beigās Melngalvji Rīgā svinēja vastlāvi divu nedēļu garumā, iekļaujot programmā dažādus pasākumus savā lokā, kā arī ielūdzot viesus un radot svētku atmosfēru visā pilsētā. Oficiālā svētku atklāšana notika trešdienā nedēļu pirms pelnu trešdienas, ar mūziku, svinīgām runām un mielošanos ar ēdieniem un dzērieniem zālē, kas bija izdekorēta svētkiem. Ceturtdienā Melngalvji svinības izveda ārpus sava nama, kur tie ar simbolisku parādi caur vārtiem ieveda karnevāla svētkus pilsētā. Atklājot vastlāvja svinības pilsētā, šajā un citās dienās notika dejas gan Melngalvju nama zālē, gan tirgus laukumā, gan deju parāde uz pilsētas Rāti un Lielo Ģildi, lai aizvestu karnevālu pie pārējiem pilsētas tirgotājiem. Turpmākajās dienās norisinājās alus vakari, kā arī mielasti ar dejām, uz kurām tika aicināti viesi, tostarp dāmas. Tā kā Melngalvji bija jauni un neprecēti tirgotāji, kas vēl apguva savu tirgotāja amatu, šādi pasākumi varēja būt laba iespēja iepazīties un padejot ar pilsētas jaunavām, kuras arī bija no labām tirgotāju ģimenēm. Melngalvju šrāgas arī iekļauj noteikumus, kā būtu jāapietas ar dāmām, kas uzaicinātas ciemos, un, galvenais, – cik dejas viņām jāvelta vakara gaitā un kā jāielūdz uz nākamo deju vakaru. Mielasti turpinājās katru vakaru, līdz pelnu trešdienas priekšvakarā galdā jau tika celta siļķe, lai atzīmētu gavēņa sākumu. Ceturtdienā pēc pelnu trešdienas Melngalvji pulcējās agrā dievkalpojumā Svētā Pētera baznīcā, bet vakarā ar dejojošo parādi cauri pilsētai atkal izveda svētkus pa Smilšu vārtiem. Melngalvji svinēšanu gan turpināja gandrīz vēl nedēļu un tikai nākamajā otrdienā naksnīgajā tirgus laukumā sadedzināja bluķi, kas noslēdza vastlāvi pavisam. Vēlākajos gadsimtos Reformācijas ietekmē daudzas svētku tradīcijas, tostarp vastlāvis, izzuda. Taču paražas pirms gavēņa kārtīgi pieēsties, dejot, pārģērbties un iet pie kaimiņiem, kā arī sadedzināt bluķi, joprojām pastāv Meteņa svētku tradīcijā. Pēdējo gadu Meteņu svinību atgriešanās Rīgas rātslaukumā nav tikai folkloras tradīciju adaptēšana pilsētā – tā ir arī viduslaiku svētku atgriešanās Rīgas vecajā centrā.

Aktieris Kristaps Kristers Ozols 2025. gadā absolvēja režisora Elmāra Seņkova vadīto dramatiskā teātra aktieru kursu Latvijas Kultūras akadēmijā un uzsāka darbu Valmieras teātrī. Viņš sevi jau vairākkārt teātrī pierādījis, nupat kā tapusi monoizrāde „Sākums” par šaubām un pārdomām, kas piepilda viņa prātu, un iespējams, tas ir aktuāli arī citiem jauniem cilvēkiem. Radošājā telpā “Kurtuve”, Valmierā, Kristaps uz skatuves stājas viens. Viņam apkārt nav spilgtu dekorāciju, tikai uz skatuves ar līmlentu novilkta strīpa. Viņš šajā telpā ir viens ar savu stāstījumu skatītājiem, kas kaut kādā ziņā atgādina komiķu šovus, stāvizrādes. Tikai šoreiz joki ir par aktieri un pasauli viņam apkārt. Šī ir Kristapa Kristera pirmā monoizrāde, līdz ar to jāiepazīst skatuve vienam. Un arī kļūdas jāuzņemas pašam. Uz skatuves nav kolēģu, ar kuriem šo sajūtu dalīt. Režisors uzskata, ka izrāde parāda ne tikai mīlestību pret aktierspēli, bet arī šīs profesijas skaudro dabu. Savukārt Valmieras teātra aktieris Aksels Aizkalns šajā izrādē bija režisora asistents. Zīmīgi, ka viņš ir aŗi Kristapa teātra krusttēvs. -- Kristaps Kristers Ozols līdz šim sevi pierādījis diplomdarbu izrādēs – “Kristāla bērni”, “Sapņotāji”, “Nevienam nezināmā Marija”, “Santakrusa” un citās. Stāsta mākslas vēsturniece, Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas Mākslas vēstures institūta vadošā pētniece un Nacionālā kultūras mantojuma pārvaldes arhitektūras un mākslas daļas vadītāja Anna Ancāne. Ēkai Mārstaļu ielā 6 ir bijuši vairāki būvperiodi, un tās arhitektonisko vērtību veido dažāda laika oriģinālā substance un sekundāri uzslāņojumi. Tomēr neskatoties uz notikušiem pārveidojumiem, ēkai ir augsta oriģinālās substances saglabātības pakāpe. Kā īpašas vērtības izceļamas labi saglabājušās oriģinālās jumta konstrukcijas, interjeru gleznojumu fragmenti, akmens portāls, viduslaiku ķieģeļu mūra fragmenti u. c. Periods pēc Ziemeļu kara, blokādes un mēra epidēmijas bija viens no smagākajiem periodiem pilsētas vēsturē – šie faktori negatīvi iespaidoja arī kultūras procesus, samazinājās iedzīvotāju skaits, saruka tirdzniecības aprite. Kara postītājā teritorijā, īpaši Rīgā, galvenokārt notika dzīvojamo un sabiedrisko ēku atjaunošanas darbi. Mainoties ekonomiskajai situācijai un aktivizējoties būvniecībai, sākot ar 18. gs. otro ceturksni Rīgas dzīvojamo ēku arhitektūrā iezīmējās jaunas stilistiskās pazīmes un mainījās telpu plānojuma principi. Gadsimta pirmo pusi vēl raksturo baroka ekspresivitāte, krāsu piesātinājums un tam sekojošā rokoko ornamentikas izplatība, kamēr 18. gs. pēdējais ceturksnis jau pilnā mērā reprezentē klasicismam piemītošos atturīgo eleganci un krāsu paleti. 18. gs. vidū pirmie fiksētie nozīmīgākie pārveidojumi saistīti ar ēkas fasādi. Senākais ēkas attēls pirms 19. gs. pārbūvēm ir redzams 1823. gada Vecrīgas fasāžu notinumos podporučika Kļimenkova izpildījumā: logu gabarīti liecina, ka tolaik vēl eksistēja baroka periodam raksturīgais kārtojums divos stāvos ar noslēdzošo pusstāvu – noliktavas vai kalpotāju telpām. Jumtā redzamas septiņas nelielas izbūves bēniņu stāvu ventilācijai. Fasādei trūkst klasiskā ordera kompozicionālajai sistēmai nepieciešamā loģiskā noslēguma – frontona centrālajā asī. Iespējams, sākotnēji tas ir eksistējis, tomēr praktisku apsvērumu dēļ nojaukts un tā vietā vēlāk ierīkots bēniņu logs. Vēlāko pārbūvju laikā augšējā stāva logailu proporcijas mainītas, tās paplašinot. Pēc arhitektūras rakstura ēka ierindojama patriciāta dzīvojamo namu tipoloģiskajā grupā, kas Rīgā plaši pārstāvēta 17. gs. otrajā pusē. 1823. gada fasāžu notinumos otrā stāva logiem redzami liektas formas sandriki, bet fasādes simetrijas asī novietoto portālu vainagoja atvērtais frontons ar liektām slīpnēm. Šāda tipa arhitektoniskas detaļas bija populāras Rīgas namu fasādēs un portālos ap 18. gs. vidu; tipoloģiski līdzīgs piemērs, kas pārvietots no zudušas ēkas, ir saglabājies Smilšu ielā 6 iekšpagalmā (datēts ar 18. gs. 60. gadu vidu). Avoti nesniedz precīzas ziņas, kad ēka Mārstaļu ielā 6 ieguva savu reprezentatīvo portālu. Vēsturnieka Jāņa Strauberga apkopotie arhīvu izraksti par Vecrīgas gruntsgabalu īpašniekiem sniedz informāciju, ka 1766. gadā nams Mārstaļu ielā 6 (gruntstgabals 3/113) piederējis Frīdriham Francenam. Šajā laikā nama vērtība lēsta 4682 sudraba rubļu apmērā un 1785. gadā joprojām palika nemainīga, kamēr 1797., 1804. un 1808. gadā tā pacēlās attiecīgi līdz 11976, 12083 un 16403 sudraba rubļiem. Vērtības pieauguma dinamika liecina par tolaik notikušām plašākām pārbūvēm vai remontdarbiem. 1804. gadā nomainījās ēkas īpašnieks – to ieguva tirgotāja Andreasa Zēzemaņa (Andreas Seesemann) dzimta. Skaitļi norāda, ka pārveidojumi uzsākti jau iepriekšējā īpašnieka laikā, bet tieši 19. gs. pirmajā desmitgadē būvdarbi noritējuši visaktīvāk, tā iezīmējot jaunu būvperiodu ēkas vēsturē. Ja monogrammu “S” kartušas centrā saista ar Zēzemaņu vārdu, tas nozīmētu pārāk ievērojamu laika nobīdi rokoko dekoratīvās sistēmas izmantošanā un būtu traktējams drīzāk kā anahronisks izņēmums, nevis likumsakarība. Iespējams, portālu pasūtīja kāds no iepriekšējiem īpašniekiem, jo tas atbilst 18. gs. 60.–70. gados aktuālajai estētikai un izpratnei par modernu arhitektūru. Tiek uzskatīts, ka pirmā nozīmīgākā pārbūve ēkā Mārstaļu ielā 6 notikusi 1785.–1797. gadā, kas ir hipotētiskais portāla tapšanas laiks, tās gaitā arī pielāgojot telpas jaunajām prasībām. Mainījās arī fasāžu apdares estētika. Pirms atjaunošanas veiktās zondāžas parādīja, ka fasāde tikusi vairākkārt remontēta. Noteikt sākotnējo krāsu sistēmu bija sarežģīti, jo ēkai vairākkārt klāts jauns apmetums un senākais slānis gandrīz pilnībā zudis. Atsevišķās zonās – ieejas durvju portālā un zem logailām – konstatēti trīs vēsturiskā kaļķa krāsas krāsojuma slāņi. Gan portāla pilastriem, gan plastiskajiem dekoriem un dzegām kā pirmais krāsojuma tonis uz kaļķa apmetuma konstatēts monohroms krāsojums zaļgani pelēcīgā tonī; analogs tonis konstatēts arī logu aplodām un palodžu dzegām zonās, kur bija saglabājušies vecie apdares slāņi. Otrais slānis ir veikts ar gaišu, smilškrāsas toņa kaļķa krāsu, bet trešais – ar tumši pelēku. Savukārt fasādes plaknē konstatētais senākais krāsojuma slānis bijis gaiši zilganā tonī, to nomainījis dzeltens okers un visbeidzot – tumši pelēks krāsojums. Pirmais no tiem atbilst 18. gs. beigu klasicisma estētikai un krāsojuma sistēmai.

Stāsta Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas profesore, Dr. art. Silvija Grosa Ja kādam no rīdziniekiem vaicātu – kur atrodas nams ar trim atlantiem, ikviens  nekļūdīgi norādītu uz ēku Vaļņu un Teātra ielas stūrī. Tomēr iespējams, ka tikai daži zinās, ka šajā namā atradās pirmā speciāli šim nolūkam projektētā grāmatnīca Rīgā. Monumentālā, īres un veikalu nama īpašnieks Kārlis Zihmanis bija antikvārs, izdevējs un grāmatu tirgotājs. Zihmaņa grāmatnīca, protams, nebija vienīgā Rīgā – arī pirms šī nama uzcelšanas grāmatu tirgošana, tāpat kā to iespiešana, norisa aktīvi un, spriežot pēc grāmatizdevējiem piederošajiem namiem, grāmatniecība bija ienesīga nodarbe. Teātra ielas 9. nama projekts datēts ar 1903.  gadu.  Tas  izstrādāts arhitektu Šēla un Šefela birojā, kurā tapuši projekti arī labi zināmajiem jūgendstila namiem Smilšu ielā 8, kas piederēja tirgotājam Bobrovam, kā arī tirgotāja Tupikova namam Ģertrūdes ielā 10/12, Detmana namam Šķūnu ielā un citiem. Zihmaņa nama dekoratīvā apdare tapusi firmā “Wassil & Co”, bet akrotērijs ar atlantu figūrām – Augusta Folca darbnīcā. Kā liecina būvvēsturē saglabājušās liecības, nama būvniecību pavadīja apkārtējo iedzīvotāju neapmierinātība un sūdzības par troksni un neērtībam, kuras radīja lielā nama celtniecība, savukārt īpašniekam bija svarīgi būvniecību iespējami ātri pabeigt. Būvvēsturē saglabājušās Frīdriha Šefela skices Zihmaņa ēkas fasādei ļauj iegūt priekšstatu par dekora izvēles gaitu. Sākotnējos skičveidīgos ēkas apjomu uzmetumus nedaudz vēlāk papildina detalizētāks fasādes zīmējums, tomēr redzams, ka arhitektu vairāk par detaļām nodarbinājusi faktūru problēma. Plastiskais rotājums un atlantu figūras iezīmētas shematiski, turklāt ievērojami atšķiras no realizētā varianta, kurā savukārt īpašu nozīmi ieguvis ēkas stūra risinājums ar trīslapja formā izliekto plašo balkonu. Kartuša, kas bija paredzēta īpašnieka monogrammai, mūsdienās ir tukša. Plastiskā dekora vēstījums nama augšdaļā – cilnis ar antīkās mitoloģijas tēliem (gudrību personificējošā Atēna un dievu vēstnesis Hermejs jeb Merkurijs ar grāmatu rokās) un grāmatu saiņi – nolasāms tieši  nama īpašnieka nodarbes kontekstā. Monumentālās ēkas stūri vainago akrotērijs – trīs atlanti, kas balsta globusu. Figūra vai figūru grupa ar globusu idejas līmenī ir aizguvums no daudzviet Eiropā (Pēterburgā, Prāgā, Oksfordā un citviet) izmantotas ēku rotājuma tēmas. Atlants, kas nes vai balsta globusu, sastopams arī Itālijas renesanses laika bronzas sīkplastikā, kuras kolekcionēšana piederēja pie izsmalcinātām intelektuālām nodarbēm un uzplauka kopš 15. gadsimta. Zihmaņa nama kontekstā skulpturālā grupa uztverama kā zināšanu simbols. Tomēr līdz ar simboliski reprezentatīviem mērķiem figurālā grupa bija iecerēta arī kā laikmetīgs akcents, jo globuss (līdzīgi kā firmas “Singer” biroju ēkā Pēterburgā) bija darināts no stikla un naktīs tika izgaismots. Vēlāk, kad Zihmaņa apgādu iegādājās komandītsabiedrība “Valters un Rapa”, no Teātra ielas 9. nama “aizceļoja” arī abas vara kaluma pūces, kas atradās pie grāmatnīcas ieejas. Tās joprojām kalpo kā akciju sabiedrības “Valters un Rapa” grāmatu nama savdabīgs simbols Aspazijas bulvārī 24. Zihmaņa nama atlanti, kas nonākuši līdz mūsdienām, nebūt nebija vienīgie. Šādi vai līdzīgi akrotēriji bija cieņā. Iespaidīga figūru grupa dižojās uz Tupikova nama jumta, bet sievietes tēls ar lāpu augti paceltā rokā savulaik rotāja Iļjas Bobrova īres un veikalu nama jumtu Smilšu un Aldaru ielas stūrī.

Fakt, že ke klimatickým změnám dojde, nelze ignorovat a pouhou adaptací krajiny je nebudeme sto zvládnout. K tomu abychom byli uhlíkově neutrální by přitom stačilo snížit naši spotřebu o třetinu, jak vypočítal kanadský profesor českého původu Václav Smil, na kterého se Pitek odkazuje. Každopádně to, že budeme hospodařit jinak, jak v lesnictví, tak v zemědělství, je jasné už nyní a úplně jednoduše se může stát, že se tu budou pěstovat pomeranče. Jižní Morava, kdysi jedna z nejúrodnější oblastí České republiky, už je na tom dnes z hlediska výnosů obilí hůř než bramborářská Vysočina. Pitek se přitom netají obavami, že se systém začne rozpadat, což by v konečném důsledku mohlo znamenat, že člověk jako druh nebude schopen přežít. Ohrožená je už například potravinová bezpečnost ve Španělsku, což se může stát i nám, a ne nutně ve vzdálené budoucnosti. Nechce ale strašit a věří, že situace nás donutí se o půdu lépe starat. Přispět by k tomu mohl i zákon o rodinných farmách, který má podpořit životaschopnost venkova a zmírnit koncentraci moci v oboru, která je bezpečnostním rizikem. Jaký způsobem sám žije a proč se zatvrdil, k čemu bude potřeba přistoupit, abychom nežili obklopeni stepí, jsou agrobaroni skutečně problém, nebo proč letos vezme tradice prvomájového polibku pod rozkvetlou třešní za své? Now think of a dirty, ugly, rotting landfill, stinking in the mid-day sun. Of these two scenarios, which, do you reckon, is worse for the environment? Many of the primitive recycling operations in Guiyu are toxic and dangerous to workers' health with 80% of children suffering from lead poisoning. Above-average miscarriage rates are also reported in the region. Workers use their bare hands to crack open electronics to strip away any parts that can be reused—including chips and valuable metals, such as gold, silver, etc. Workers also "cook" circuit boards to remove chips and solders, burn wires and other plastics to liberate metals such as copper; use highly corrosive and dangerous acid baths along the riverbanks to extract gold from the microchips; and sweep printer toner out of cartridges. Children are exposed to the dioxin-laden ash as the smoke billows around Guiyu, finally settling on the area. The soil surrounding these factories has been saturated with lead, chromium, tin, and other heavy metals. Discarded electronics lie in pools of toxins that leach into the groundwater, making the water undrinkable to the extent that water must be trucked in from elsewhere. Lead levels in the river sediment are double European safety levels, according to the Basel Action Network. Lead in the blood of Guiyu's children is 54% higher on average than that of children in the nearby town of Chendian. Piles of ash and plastic waste sit on the ground beside rice paddies and dikes holding in the Lianjiang River. Ben's back-of-the-napkin math Consider the Apex landfill in Las Vegas. This handles trash for the whole city, which is ~700K people. The base of the landfill is currently 9km^2 , but they've hinted at expanding it in the future. So let's assume they more than double it and put it at 20km^2 . The estimates are that this landfill will handle trash for ~300 years "at current rates". I'm not sure if that includes population growth, so let's play it safe and assume not. So how much space does each person need landfill wise for the next 300 years? We have 20km^2 / 700K people = 28.5 m^2 per person for 300 years. For 400M people, that's roughly 12,000 km^2. The US is roughly 10,000,000 km^2. That's 0.012% of the US needed for landfills for the next 300 years. We definitely have the space. Podle řady studií je ovšem myšlenka neustálého růstu chybná a často vede jen k vyšší spotřebě, ne k většímu štěstí. Podle ekonoma Václava Smila si musíme uvědomit, jak moc plýtváme: „Mnoho lidí si to uvědomuje už 50 let. Ale ten cenový signál tam pořád není. Kdyby Apple zítra zanikl, je to škoda. Ale kdyby se zítra přestala těžit ropa, svět zkolabuje, říká investor Daniel Gladiš. Investujte do věcí, po kterých bude v budoucnu hlad. Tady jsou tři trendy, které by investor neměl minout.„Svět netrpí nedostatkem mobilních aplikací, ale nepřipraveností infrastruktury na budoucí nutný rozvoj, především v chudších dvou třetinách světa. Posledních 10 až 12 let se spousty peněz investovaly do technologických oborů, spousta kapitálu se promrhala, svět ale potřebuje jiné věci,“ říká Daniel Gladiš v podcastu Ve vatě.Odpověď na otázku „jaké?“ je překvapivá. Čpavek, cement, plasty, ocel. Vědec Václav Smil je nazývá pilíře moderní civilizace. Víc než 99,9 procenta všeho, co si dnes koupíte, potřebovalo minimálně jeden z výše uvedených materiálů – jsou nenahraditelné. Přitom jsou hlavním investičním proudem opomíjené.„Čína v letech 2018 a 2019 spotřebovala tolik cementu, co Spojené státy za 100 let. Celkem 4,5 miliardy tun,“ uvádí Gladiš příklad, kam nasměrovat své peníze. Podle investora nás čeká období velkých kapitálových investic, které pomohou zvýšit životní úroveň v chudých oblastech světa.Snaha rozvíjejících se zemí vymanit se z chudoby s sebou ponese obrovský nárůst spotřeby energie, upozorňuje také Gladiš. Cena energií je druhý trend, který je třeba sledovat.„Z investičního hlediska budou mít největší konkurenční výhodu firmy a země, které mají nejlevnější energii a mají ji kdykoliv k dispozici,“ tvrdí zakladatel fondu Vltava SICAV.Které to jsou? A kam tedy investice směřovat? „Jsou to Kanada a Spojené státy, EU určitě ne. Teď máme v EU nejdražší energii z rozvinutých zemí. Hliníkárna v Kanadě má nesrovnatelně nižší náklady na energii než hliníkárna v Belgii a nemůže prohrát,“ říká Gladiš. Bez fosilních paliv se svět podle něj, s ohledem na budoucí rozvoj v chudé části světa, ještě celá desetiletí neobejde.Třetím trendem je zrychlování inflace. Největší nepřítel investora znehodnocuje peníze stále rychleji. „Ve Spojených státech, což je polovička světového akciového trhu, od roku 1800 do roku 1918 byla kumulovaná inflace 0 %. Ceny byly stejné i po 118 letech. Ale od konce druhé světové války vzrostly na šestnáctinásobek. Vaclav Smil is a polymath who has written more than 40 books and some 500 papers on numerous topics including energy, power, population, food production, and the history of innovation. Smil declined to appear on the podcast, so in this episode, I discuss my favorite books of his (I have 13 of them), his distaste for publicity and politics, and read some excerpts from a recent interview Smil did with the New York Times.
