This week on the Discussion Phase we're examining our player identities and what it is about certain asymmetrical abilities in games that always seem to be the ones we gravitate towards. We review recent plays of Dwellings of Eldervale and Empires of the North, as well as discuss just how import reviews are now that Brass: Birmingham is the new #1 game of all time. I once saw a video of a woman driving a Shelby GT350 Mustang on the Autobahn. It hit 275 kph without breaking a figurative sweat, roaring its primal power the entire way. I was petrified even watching the video. This is to say nothing of the terror I felt seeing it take offramps at roughly 100 kph, which is not terribly advisable with a vehicle that is not known for its cornering. Of course, there are many sections of the Autobahn with speed limits--and even more with no Mustangs on it at all. Tragedies heaped upon tragedies.Games Played Last Week:00:54 -boop. Say what you want about the evils of filthy lucre, but I find it amazing how managers turn communitarian and high-minded when it comes to fair remuneration. "Don't you believe in the project?" "Aren't you committed to the team?" et al get deployed all the time when people want to, you know, get compensated for their work. One can't help but notice that racialized workers and women get subjected to such nonsense at a higher-than-average rate. Volunteerism is noble and good, but stiffing workers is not. When someone is trying to elide the difference, you can bet that they're up to something.Games Played Last Week:01:12 -Wonderland's War (Tim Eisner, Ben Eisner, & Ian Moss, Druid City Games, 2022)04:36 -Fantasy Realms: Deluxe Edition (Bruce Galssco, WizKids, 2022)08:55 -Lands of Galzyr (Seppo Kuukasjärvi and Sami Laakso, Snowdale Design, 2022)12:12 -Horizons of Spirit Island (R. I know this is a First World problem, but I currently have a number of games sitting on my shelves that I haven't played yet. We were still trying to understand the special powers of the 8 elemental realms and how our dragon, wizard and warriors could take advantage of each and how we could impose our dominance over the other factions in this growing world. Each realm also had a giant monster that would wreak death and cause havoc amongst us, if we couldn't work out how to defeat it first or control it and steer it in our favour. In our Sizzling Games tonight Conor revisits a favourite of the podcast Empires of the North. Not to be outdone, Adrian has been playing the new hotness in Ark Nova, managing his own unique zoo. We launch the next match-up in the Bracket Battle 2.0: Barrage vs Maracaibo. It's Adrian vs Conor and they plead their case as to why their game is better. To make sure your favourite goes through to the next round make sure you vote on our socials. In the Sizzling Games segment, Jules has been the playing the new Roll and Write from friend of the show Matthew Dunstan (and Rory Muldoon): Voyages. Sarah has been enjoying the Martin Wallace city building game Anno 1800. Def is still living out his train fantasies with Mini Express. Finally Adrian has found his new favourite trick-taking game: Nyet! We dive back into the Bracket Battle and recap the last match up: Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion vs Raiders of the North Sea. Finally in Swear an Oath Def fulfilled his oaths of Clans of Caledonia and also Hellenica: Story of Greece. Adrian overcame Mitch's sleep-inducing tutorial and played Merchants of the Dark Road, and also played Santa's Workshop, but fell short of teaching Conor Aeon's End. Sarah hasn't played Chronicles of Crime yet, but did play Forge War. Jules played half a game of Mysthea (so it doesn't count!) but is prepared to play it at this weekend's Melbourne Board Game Day. In the spirit of second chances, Adrian swears an oath to revisit Dwellings of Eldervale, Def swears to give Imperium: Classics a second chance, Sarah swears to play Great Western Trail, and Jules will finally finish painting his Unsettled minis.   Sizzling Games: Voyages (06:35), Anno 1800 (18:50), Mini Express (33:45), Nyet! Episode 120 - Teotihuacan Late Pre-classic Period and Shadow of Xitle , Architects of the West Kingdom, Red 7, The Mind On this episode Steve, Conor and Mike bring new meaning to the word 'chaos'. Once the dust settles, the lads discuss board gaming statistics - do they keep gaming stats? Why? How do you use/refer to them? Which of our hosts is anti-stats? In the Sizzling Games segment Steve has explored the expansions to Teotihuacan, Late Pre-classic Period and Shadow of Xitle, and he gives us a rundown on how they significantly improve the game. Conor dived deeper into Architects of the West Kingdom with the Age of Artisans expansion. Meanwhile Mike has been playing the ever-changing Red 7, and also the mind-melding The Mind. In the Bracket Battle 2.0 we tally up the scores and find out if Too Many Bones or Dwellings of Eldervale took the chocolates. Then, we set-up the next battle: Ganz Schon Clever vs Raiders of the North Sea. Make sure you head to our socials and cast your vote to make sure your favourite goes through to the next round. Finally in Swear An Oath, Mike has Stone Age still on the shelf and Marvel Champions ready to go, Conor played Raiders of Scythia but hasn't got around to Galaxy's Most Wanted just yet, and Steve played Circadian's First Light and also achieved a new personal best in Hadrian's Wall. New oaths sworn include Scape Goat (Mike), Cloud Age (Conor), The West Kingdom Tomesaga (Steve) and Galaxy's Most Wanted (Steve).   Sizzling Games: Teotihuacan Expansions (6:45), Architects of the West Kingdom (21:20), Red 7 & The Mind (37:07) Topic of the Pod: Recording Our Gaming Stats (54:12) Board Game Bracket Battle 2.0: Dwellings of Eldervale vs Too Many Bones (01:15:04) Swear an Oath: (01:37:25)   **BOARD GAME BBQ GAME DAY** Join us for the second Board game BBQ Day to be held in Sydney! Episode 118 - Vinhos, Hanamikoji, Ankh: Gods of Egypt On this episode Steve, Jules and Mitch discuss their Top 5 Games that are outside the BGG Top 1000. What unsung heroes do you have in your collection that you think should be ranked higher in the pantheon of games? Do you have any cross-over with the BGBBQ Team? In Sizzling Games, Mitch introduced his family to the wonderful Vinhos from Vital Lacerda. Steve discovered the wonders of the small-box game, Hanamikoji. In the Bracket Battle 2.0 we review last week's battle, Marvel Champions vs Pipeline, before we set-up this week's battle: Too Many Bones vs Dwellings of Eldervale. Today we discuss Dwellings of Eldervale designed by Luke Laurie and published by Breaking Games featuring The Quackalope Writing Team! Dwellings of Eldervale Dwellings of Eldervale is hybrid worker placement game set in a once lost magical world. Giant elemental monsters roam while dragons, wizards and warriors battle for dominance over 8 elemental realms. Players control unique factions seeking to adventure, battle, grow in power and ultimately dwell Eldervale, shaping it to their vision. The game blends worker placement, area control, engine building and unique worker units. Players take turns placing a worker in Eldervale or regrouping and activating their tableau of adventure cards. In the end, the players with the most elemental dominance among the multiple paths to victory will reign over Eldervale. A hook, as per the dictionary definition, is something that draws you in. In games, a hook can be a number of different things. Often it is something visually exciting, such as beautiful illustrations, amazingly detailed miniatures, realistic resources or some sort of physical component that is integral to gameplay. Hooks can also be an interesting theme, an exciting gameplay mechanism or even the background story behind how a game was made. Certain awards or even the price of a game can be a hook too. Ultimately it's about finding something that grabs your attention and gets you to take a closer look.
