In this episode of the Aptitude Outdoors Podcast, we dive into the remarkable return of seals to the coastlines of Cape Cod. Once nearly driven to extinction due to overhunting and human conflict, harbor and gray seals have made a triumphant comeback thanks to vital conservation efforts like the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. We explore the history behind the near-extinction of these marine mammals, the pivotal laws that saved them, and how their resurgence is reshaping the coastal ecosystem. As seal populations have rebounded, they've attracted the return of another iconic predator: the great white shark. Cape Cod's waters, now teeming with life, have become a hotspot for shark sightings, sparking both excitement and concern among residents and visitors. In this episode, we discuss the critical role seals play in the marine ecosystem and how their presence supports the natural food chain, including the resurgence of sharks. We also highlight the work of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, an organization committed to protecting these apex predators while educating the public on their importance. From shark tagging to the Sharktivity app, the conservancy's efforts balance conservation with public safety, ensuring a sustainable future for both seals and sharks in Cape Cod's waters. Tune in for a deep dive into the intricate relationships between these animals and their environment.

Sharks have swum the world's waters for millennia – there is a reason they are referred to as living dinosaurs. Their presence globally is not new, but their comeback in certain parts of the world is not celebrated by everyone. In September of 2018, Arthur Medici was killed while recreating in the waters off Cape Cod after sustaining a white shark bite. His death, the first shark related death in state history since 1936, has sparked an intense debate about the sharks, seals and people who live, work and play in the waters of the Atlantic. Arthur's death prompted the question - what do we do? But also, - haven't we already done enough? Data from this long term project - which has so far tagged 277 individual white sharks in Cape waters - sees sharks arriving earlier and leaving later and provided other insights into the apex predator's patterns.

My shark guy Dr. Gregory Skomal (left) is as famous as the Great White Sharks he tags for The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. I call him 'my shark guy' because for years he's made sure to be on my radio show every year during 'Shark Week' to share his latest shark science findings, and because we always have a lot of fun on the air together. Dr. Gregory Skomal's the star of many Shark Week shows, and you've also probably seen him all over the news recently reporting on the increase of shark sightings and shark attacks near the shores on the East Coast. (Relaxing eh?) So happens the day Good Morning America jumped on board a boat with him for a shark story live from Ryders Cove, on the Cape of Massachusetts  - my CBD guy was right there. Yes I have a "CBD guy" too. LOL. Primabee CBD Founder Paul Borde (right). I'm helping him expand his best in class CBD products into unique locations.  Paul happens to live right where this news story was being shot so he ended up going down and speaking with both Dr. Greg Skomal and the  ABC News Meteoroligust Ginger Zee. They were preparing to go out on Greg's boat. Paul knows Gregs's 'my shark guy' so he mentioned to Greg they had me in common. Greg thanked Paul for brinigng  up my name and reminding him to give me a call  and let my audience know what's really going on with the sharks out there. So he called and it was a very enlightening conversation about the reasons behnd the increase in shark activity.  Enjoy the podcast of our chat with the latest inside Shark Scoop.   BTW: regarding the awesome GMA video segment they shot that day,  all i want to say is that ABC Ginger Zee is a better woman than me for going shark tagging.

Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Doctor Gregory Skomal. Greg is an accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, photographer, aquarist, and author. He has been a fisheries biologist with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries since 1987 and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP). He holds a master's degree from the University of Rhode Island and a PhD from Boston University.  Greg is a perfect example of someone having a dream and persisting to make it a reality. As a young boy, after the release of the movie Jaws in 1975, he aspired to become the well known fictitious marine biologist and shark scientist Matt Hooper...and that is exactly what happened. For more than 35 years Greg has been one of the most renowned marine biologists and shark scientists in the world.Greg has been actively involved in the study of life history, ecology, and physiology of sharks. His shark research has spanned multiple fish habitats around the globe; from the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle to coral reefs in the tropical Central Pacific. In recent years, Greg has become the face of all things shark-related on Cape Cod.  Skomal and his associate, John Chisholm, were the first to successfully tag and track great whites in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean using high-tech tags through the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. The organization now has the ability to track local and long-range movements, study behavior and biology, and estimate population size of great whites in the area. Since Greg began tagging white sharks in Cape Cod and MA, he and his crew have tagged over 280 white sharks. We have been fortunate to know Greg since we were kids, and we have always admired his passion and knowledge for the ocean. Anybody Besides Me A Little Unrelaxed Thinking About Taking A Relaxing Dip In The Atlantic Ocean During 'Shark Season'?  Several huge sharks have been spotted near New York, New Jersey, and Cape Cod. Field & Stream Magazine recently quoted , OCEARCH founder and shark researcher Chris Fischer as saying  “The moment you're 3-feet in the ocean, you're in the wild, and you've taken a risk." 3 FEET???  That sounded very 'UNrelaxing'. I decided to put out an SOS for MY 'Shark Guy" Dr. Gregory Skomal to call me so we could...'discuss' just how UNrelaxed we should be at the beach this year. 'Greg' physically tags Great White Sharks for a living. He's the Senior Fisheries Scientist at the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP). If there's a TV Shark Show, Dr. Gregory Skomal is usually in it. This is a guy who saw the movie 'Jaws' as a kid and couldn't wait to get back in the water. As opposed to most of the rest of us who saw 'Jaws' and never relaxed on a float in any body of water again.  You'll notice at the very beginning of this live radio show recording  (podcast) of our conversation I'm talking about avocado robbers not sharks. That's because after my big intro it seems 'Greg' got held up and since I was doing this show remotely, I had no idea if he was even going to show up -  so I started talking about 'whatever'. LOL  Luckily 'Shark Guy' arrived and shared really good news for beachgoers  in NY & NJ. He said, "The chances of getting bitten by a shark in those areas are really low - pretty much non existent." However he did say, up near Cape Cod near the outer Cape, white sharks are hunting seals close to shore so people probably don't want to go in past their shoulders. (Keep in mind wet suits resemble seals in the water. Why they don't make them in day glow colors or plaid I'll never know.)  On the subject of shark teeth which people collect and wear, I mentioned when I was in North Carolina in May there were women walking the beach looking for shark teeth?  Why the heck are sharks losing so many teeth I had to ask? Greg says, ‘Sharks shed their teeth throughout their entire lives. They have multiple rows of teeth constantly replacing old teeth. Think of their teeth he said, as conveyor belts. It's what they do to keep them sharp." (Another UNrelaxing thought.)    And what does a Shark Scientist think about Shark Fishing Tournaments like the ones you hear about in Montauk NY?  As long as people adhere to federal and state regulations meeting the minimum size and bag limits, he's totally cool with them. In fact, he's used tournaments over the years to get shark samples to study.    Does a shark scientist eat shark? "Most definitely said Greg, it's delicious right up there against swordfish. Better than swordfish. Very good eating"   So much fun to have a 'Shark Guy' friend! even more fun I can now 'calmly' go into the ocean '3 feet'. Maybe. You can follow Dr. Gregory Skomal  follow all the Great Whites and now you can also follow the sharks yourself too. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, created an app called "Sharktivity" in collaboration with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, the Cape Cod National Seashore, and officials from Cape Cod and South Shore towns to raise awareness of the presence of white sharks off their coast. That should app-solutely come in handy next time you're about to dip your toes in the ocean during shark season.  PS Dr. Gregory Skomal's shark research has spanned multiple fish habitats around the globe. He's written dozens of scientific research papers and has appeared in a number of film and television documentaries, including programs for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, ESPN, and numerous television networks. His most recent book, The Shark Handbook, is a must buy for all shark enthusiasts.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy's sharktivity app indicates that there have been more that 161 shark sightings off the coast of Massachusetts since June 1. The same shark can be spotted multiple times, scientists note. This summer, however, did create something of a perfect stormwarming oceans attract both sharks and beach goers, and something does need to be done. Instead of killing more sharks, though, repelling them seems to be a much smarter idea. That's where a company called Surf Safe comes in. For around $400, a guy named Dave Smith will sell you a simple device that you can install on your surfboard that might just prevent an attack. https://nbcnews.to/2MQ2ilw https://bit.ly/2MaC2CK Peter: The scourge of plastic in our oceans has received lot of publicity in recent years, especially in the UK where TV documentaries (notably the Blue Planet series) have brought the issue into the nation's homes. It seems the country is doing well in saying no' to one of the major culprits, the disposable plastic bag. With the amount of plastic entering the oceans estimated at a worrying 8 million tons, any news story that shows a bit of good news is very welcome. The British press is reporting that plastic bag use has halved within a year, according to usage at major supermarkets. https://bit.ly/33kZDWL Main Topic: Aquascaping and the companies that make the goods you need! He is the Senior Scientist at the Massachusetts Shark Research Program and works closely with both the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and OCEARCH to study Great White Sharks.  He literally wrote the book on sharks (The Shark Handbook) and is very enthusiastic about translating the science literature for the lay public to learn about and enjoy this fascinating family of animals. “It's one thing to really like sharks, it's another thing to really study them.  I think it's great to love Shark Week, but that doesn't make you a scientist.” Sharks have been around for over 400 million years, an awful long time to perfect the glorious evolution evident in every sweep of their tail and gnash of teeth, and in this podcast Greg shares his fascination with this most amazing of creatures along with stories of his experiences diving with sharks in the Arctic, the Caribbean, and Pacific. Studying sharks has shaped Greg's world, and he talks about how the science has shifted dramatically from only being able to access dead sharks to now being able to track in real time the peregrinations and through that the individual personalities of one of the most well traveled species on the planet, the Great White Shark. “A good scientist needs commitment, curiosity, and passion for their subject." Greg talks about the importance of shark scientists and shark aficionados, what it takes to make a difference, and how you can help sharks tremendously from either path.  Enjoy!
