Throughout the history of time, there have been few other animals that evoke such a strong emotional response from the general public as the great white shark. From Hollywood-driven fear to sublime fascination, the great white shark has captivated the imaginations of hundreds of millions of people. Few know this species better than Dr Greg Skomal, of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. Since 1987, he has served as the senior fisheries biologist at MA DMF and has become one of the world's leading authorities on Great Whites. In this riveting presentation, Dr. Skomal highlights his research on these apex predators, which includes some amazing video and visuals that help dispel a lot of myths surrounding great whites. Dr. Skomal gives us an insider's look into the lives of the most notorious fish in the ocean!

This presentation features Luyen Chou, an entrepreneur and passionate fly angler, talking about his innovative fishing app, “Got One.” Chou explains that he developed the app to address the lack of tools that help anglers gather and analyze data to improve their fishing performance. The app allows users to log catches, record details such as species and length, and automatically pull environmental data like tide, water temperature, and moon phase from various sensors. The app's goal is twofold: to help anglers improve their fishing through data-driven insights and to contribute that data to fishery science and management efforts. Chou highlights the importance of protecting user privacy, ensuring that location data is obscured to avoid overfishing hotspots, which has been a concern with other apps. In addition to benefiting anglers, the GotOne app has been embraced by scientific organizations and conservation groups. It provides valuable aggregate data to researchers while protecting individual fishing spots. Chou mentions partnerships with organizations like the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. The app has expanded to support multiple species and is being used to gather catch and release data, particularly for striped bass. Chou shares examples of how the app's data has already contributed to scientific studies and influenced fishing gear changes to reduce mortality rates in released fish. The presentation emphasizes the potential of the app to enhance both personal angling experiences and fisheries management.

North Carolinas Oyster aquaculture industry is still in its enfancy, although rapidly expanding. This emerging shellfish farming industry has rapdily increased in size in upwards of 600% in some areas of our state such as Pender County within a very short amount of time. This growth has caught the attention of many stakeholders in the area that share these public trust marine reasources, including many local fishing guides.  Nearly 30 people spoke Wednesday night Januray 31 during a North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries-hosted public hearing on shellfish lease applications of two (Pender Co) area oyster farming companies.  "The overwhelming consesus from those who packed a room in the Surf City Municipal Complex was, while they support local Shellfish farming efforts, more leases will infringe upon popular fishing spots, impeded boating and kayaking access, and affect the viewshed of waterfront properties near the farms." " and most said they are specifically against the water column lease applications of N.Sea. Oyster Co, and Pirate Oysters LLC, raising concerns about the floating equipment used for this type of shellfish farming" (Opponents say Pender shellfish leases will crowd waters | Coastal Review)  Joining us on todays episode of "Fisheries Gone Wild" we have Captain Ray Britian of Springtide guide Service (Topsail Island) and Captian Rennie Clark of Tournament Trail Charters (Wilmington). Both of these guys share a passion for fishing, conservation and want to see a healthy sustanable fishery for years to come.  Listen in as they discuss the effects these water column oyster leases will have on the local community and the impact that can have on all stakeholders ability to access our public trust fisheries resources.  There is a lot to unpack in this episode and both captain Ray and Rennie to a great job explaining the ins and outs of the situiation going on right in their backyard.  Tight lines!

At its peak, it was not unheard of to catch 100 redfish in a single day when fishing the coastal waters of Louisiana. While the fishing is still good, liberal bag limits, habitat loss and other factors have caused the number of redfish to fall dramatically. According to a recent assessment conducted by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife redfish stocks have gone from a high of 23 million fish in 1999 to 8.7 million in 2021. There are talks of reducing harvest to combat the situation but many wonder if that will be enough. Fisheries for fin fish and krill began to increase in Antarctica in the late 1960s and 1970s and by 1982 the krill catch rose to a peak of over 520,000 tons removed. This increased harvest caused concern among scientists in Antarctic Treaty nations that fish and krill stocks would be depleted beyond recovery unless steps were taken to manage these fisheries. Here I discuss measures taken to avoid the loss of critical and keystone marine species in Antarctica with the addition of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Living Marine Resources, or CCAMLR, to the Antarctic Treaty in 1980. This agreement caused treaty nations to conserve an entire marine ecosystem and monitor indicator species that represent the health of that ecosystem. Today, CCAMLR sets quotas for fishery species including krill that help sustain their populations, though many obstacles remain.

Tune into another Episode of Fisheries Gone Wild with CCA NC!!! This week we dive deep into the upcoming Speckled Trout Fisheries Management Plan. Stuart Creighton explains the ins and outs of the FMP process and the proposal that Commercial Commisioner Doug Cross has proposed at the last MFC meeting in February.  The NC Division of Marine Fisheries latest Spotted Seatrout stock assessment has determined that the stock is not overfished but overfishing is occurring (Catching more fish faster than the stock can replenish). The Division is mandated by state statute to end overfishing within two years, to do so the Division will need a reduction in total removals of speckled trout between 14.6-39.6%. CCA NC will continue to advocate for maintaining angler access to the speckled trout fishery while ensuring a healthy sustainable stock. CCA NC is interested in garnering feedback from the fishing public on options to help reduce overfishing while maintaining a healthy, sustainable stock.  The public scoping period is the best opportunity for the fishing public to provide input on the plan! Decades of mismanagement and commercial overfishing have led to depleted stocks and severely restricted access for the fishing public to our public trust resources. Participating in our survey is an opportunity to ensure that the fishing public has a strong voice in the shaping future of speckled trout fisheries management in North Carolina. Let your voice be heard! Take a minute and fill out the survey below:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSecYma7SqLjwAL0y9T6zNOFhqm6SuwScw6LQX2aDz439shEWQ/viewform

Anybody Besides Me A Little Unrelaxed Thinking About Taking A Relaxing Dip In The Atlantic Ocean During 'Shark Season'?  Several huge sharks have been spotted near New York, New Jersey, and Cape Cod. Field & Stream Magazine recently quoted , OCEARCH founder and shark researcher Chris Fischer as saying  “The moment you're 3-feet in the ocean, you're in the wild, and you've taken a risk." 3 FEET???  That sounded very 'UNrelaxing'. I decided to put out an SOS for MY 'Shark Guy" Dr. Gregory Skomal to call me so we could...'discuss' just how UNrelaxed we should be at the beach this year. 'Greg' physically tags Great White Sharks for a living. He's the Senior Fisheries Scientist at the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP). If there's a TV Shark Show, Dr. Gregory Skomal is usually in it. This is a guy who saw the movie 'Jaws' as a kid and couldn't wait to get back in the water. As opposed to most of the rest of us who saw 'Jaws' and never relaxed on a float in any body of water again.  You'll notice at the very beginning of this live radio show recording  (podcast) of our conversation I'm talking about avocado robbers not sharks. That's because after my big intro it seems 'Greg' got held up and since I was doing this show remotely, I had no idea if he was even going to show up -  so I started talking about 'whatever'. LOL  Luckily 'Shark Guy' arrived and shared really good news for beachgoers  in NY & NJ. He said, "The chances of getting bitten by a shark in those areas are really low - pretty much non existent." However he did say, up near Cape Cod near the outer Cape, white sharks are hunting seals close to shore so people probably don't want to go in past their shoulders. (Keep in mind wet suits resemble seals in the water. Why they don't make them in day glow colors or plaid I'll never know.)  On the subject of shark teeth which people collect and wear, I mentioned when I was in North Carolina in May there were women walking the beach looking for shark teeth?  Why the heck are sharks losing so many teeth I had to ask? Greg says, ‘Sharks shed their teeth throughout their entire lives. They have multiple rows of teeth constantly replacing old teeth. Think of their teeth he said, as conveyor belts. It's what they do to keep them sharp." (Another UNrelaxing thought.)    And what does a Shark Scientist think about Shark Fishing Tournaments like the ones you hear about in Montauk NY?  As long as people adhere to federal and state regulations meeting the minimum size and bag limits, he's totally cool with them. In fact, he's used tournaments over the years to get shark samples to study.    Does a shark scientist eat shark? "Most definitely said Greg, it's delicious right up there against swordfish. Better than swordfish. Very good eating"   So much fun to have a 'Shark Guy' friend! even more fun I can now 'calmly' go into the ocean '3 feet'. Maybe. You can follow Dr. Gregory Skomal  follow all the Great Whites and now you can also follow the sharks yourself too. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, created an app called "Sharktivity" in collaboration with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, the Cape Cod National Seashore, and officials from Cape Cod and South Shore towns to raise awareness of the presence of white sharks off their coast. Hightown opens up on two friends waiting in their car on a rainy night to pick up some drugs. Before we are given much else we get our victim of the season because Sheri is shot almost instantly as she meets her “drug dealer.” Two guys roll her up and drive away not knowing that there was actually a witness, Sherry’s friend Krista who was in the car but stepped out to pee in the bushes moments before Sherry was shot. L This is the beginning of what seems to be a crazy and twisted crime by some amateurs because Sheri’s body comes to shore and is found by Jackie Quiñones, played by Monica Raymund. We quickly find out that Jackie loves to party and live her life on the edge while also working as a service officer for the Marine Fisheries department. The death doesn’t seem to affect her too much or that’s the vibe she gives as she’s talks to Detective Ray Abruzzo played by James Badge Dale. Unfortunately for Ray, Sherry was his informant and he quickly took action to find out who killed Sherri by visiting an inmate by the name of Frankie Cuevas who he thinks may be involved or at least had an idea of who’s involved. And Detective Ray doesn’t stop there, he even visits Frankie’s baby momma. But it turns out that Jackie may have been more affected than we thought about the murder because she goes out for a fun night to forget what she saw and loses control. Not just of her mind but control of the car and crashes. Jackie, under the influence of alcohol and cocaine is now possibly facing a felony because she had a passenger in her car. In order to help her sentencing she unwillingly goes to rehab. We see her spiral out again but also seems to gain a sense of reality and what she needs to do. As we get the last shot of Jackie in her first AA meeting we see a shot of various peoples photos who have been to this rehab center and we see Krista. Clearly, this is only the beginning.

Since 1984, the Bureau of Marine Fisheries has been involved in an intensive program of artificial reef construction and biological monitoring. Artificial reefs in ocean waters along the New Jersey coast provide a habitat for fish, shellfish and crustaceans, fishing grounds for anglers, and underwater structures for scuba divers. This past Wednesday, the famed ‘Perfect Storm’ rescue ship, the Tamaroa, was sunk off the coast of New Jersey to become part of an artificial reef that is enhancing fishing opportunities off the coast of New Jersey and Delaware.
