Thank you!! You can learn more about OCEARCH and their shark tracker HERE Chris Fischer has led 17 global expeditions since 2007 to advance science and education, facilitating millions of dollars in collaborative ocean research on apex predators involving over 50 scientists and 20 institutions. Fischer's ultimate goals, through the support of sponsors such as Caterpillar, are to enable scientists and governments around the world to generate groundbreaking data in an open source environment while enabling dynamic STEM education.  Fischer believes that being inclusive is inspiring. By breaking down institutional barriers, the resource-focused projects of his non-profit, OCEARCH, facilitate research progress at a rate otherwise not possible. Concurrently, students are being engaged with a K-12, STEM educational curriculum based on sharks and the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker. This near real-time dynamic tool allows anyone to track and learn about sharks along with the brightest PhDs in the world. An initial phase of lesson plans, for grades 6-8 and developed by Landry's Inc., is launching in the fall of 2013. Fischer and his team pioneered the method for capturing and releasing mature white sharks and other large marine species on a 75,000 lb. custom research platform aboard the 126' Motor Vessel OCEARCH, a one-of-kind research vessel powered by two Cat marine propulsion engines and three auxiliary generators. Obtaining unprecedented data, researchers can identify breeding areas, feeding areas, migratory corridors, and birthing sites – ensuring centrist, data driven conservation. The work of OCEARCH and Fischer has been featured in over 5,000 news stories in 2013 and a series of ongoing short films sponsored by Costa. Learn more about your ad choices. By the mid 2000's, Chris Fischer began to lend his business, angling, and media acumen to answering a basic question facing ocean scientists and all of humanity: how do we ensure our grandkids will be able to eat a fish sandwich? Having grown up in the 1970's and all too familiar with the depleted fish stocks of the western Atlantic at that time, Chris realized the biggest threat to our world oceans was a data deficit and the siloing of well-intentioned researchers stuck in an antiquated and dysfunctional system of funding. So he set about disrupting the research status quo by forming Ocearch to bring a multidisciplinary team of cooperating scientists and a uniquely equipped ship and experienced crew to study, assess, and track apex predators like white sharks. As Chris points out, he's not a shark guy, rather he's an abundance guy.  His goal is to restore balance to the oceans through shared data, public education, and informed policymaking. There is even an app to track sharks that have been tagged by researchers. ( Ocearch is the app if you wanted to check it out! )We talk about how much the veterinary industry has fluctuated over the years and how unpredictable it is. Dr. Miller brings a very interesting and current article about malware hackers and ransom money for Vet clinic medical records. Lastly, the word of the week: Cyst but more specifically Epidermal Inclusion Cyst. Angel will share a current story about these types of cysts with her own pet, Zoe. Make sure to check out our Instagram to see pictures relating to the cyst!

This week we head back to Africa to cover one of their more endearing primates, the Bush Baby. Specifically, we are covering the critically endangered Rhondo Dwarf Bush Baby. There are approximately 20 different species of Bush Baby in Africa, which are also called Galagos and resemble some of our earliest primate ancestors. The Rhondo Dwarf Bush baby is native to the coastal region of Tanzania living in the evergreen forests in the Tanzanian highlands. Due to deforestation and human encroachment, this species is at extinctions door step. Only two small populations of these animals exist today, separated by over 250 miles (400 km).  While highlighting this species, we also talk about some generalities of all the species of Bush Babies and just what makes them so special.  For one cup of "good" coffee a month you can support your favorite podcast on Patreon and give back to conservation. Anybody Besides Me A Little Unrelaxed Thinking About Taking A Relaxing Dip In The Atlantic Ocean During 'Shark Season'?  Several huge sharks have been spotted near New York, New Jersey, and Cape Cod. Field & Stream Magazine recently quoted , OCEARCH founder and shark researcher Chris Fischer as saying  “The moment you're 3-feet in the ocean, you're in the wild, and you've taken a risk." 3 FEET???  That sounded very 'UNrelaxing'. I decided to put out an SOS for MY 'Shark Guy" Dr. Gregory Skomal to call me so we could...'discuss' just how UNrelaxed we should be at the beach this year. 'Greg' physically tags Great White Sharks for a living. He's the Senior Fisheries Scientist at the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP). If there's a TV Shark Show, Dr. Gregory Skomal is usually in it. This is a guy who saw the movie 'Jaws' as a kid and couldn't wait to get back in the water. As opposed to most of the rest of us who saw 'Jaws' and never relaxed on a float in any body of water again.  You'll notice at the very beginning of this live radio show recording  (podcast) of our conversation I'm talking about avocado robbers not sharks. That's because after my big intro it seems 'Greg' got held up and since I was doing this show remotely, I had no idea if he was even going to show up -  so I started talking about 'whatever'. LOL  Luckily 'Shark Guy' arrived and shared really good news for beachgoers  in NY & NJ. He said, "The chances of getting bitten by a shark in those areas are really low - pretty much non existent." However he did say, up near Cape Cod near the outer Cape, white sharks are hunting seals close to shore so people probably don't want to go in past their shoulders. (Keep in mind wet suits resemble seals in the water. Why they don't make them in day glow colors or plaid I'll never know.)  On the subject of shark teeth which people collect and wear, I mentioned when I was in North Carolina in May there were women walking the beach looking for shark teeth?  Why the heck are sharks losing so many teeth I had to ask? Greg says, ‘Sharks shed their teeth throughout their entire lives. They have multiple rows of teeth constantly replacing old teeth. Think of their teeth he said, as conveyor belts. It's what they do to keep them sharp." (Another UNrelaxing thought.)    And what does a Shark Scientist think about Shark Fishing Tournaments like the ones you hear about in Montauk NY?  As long as people adhere to federal and state regulations meeting the minimum size and bag limits, he's totally cool with them. In fact, he's used tournaments over the years to get shark samples to study.    Does a shark scientist eat shark? "Most definitely said Greg, it's delicious right up there against swordfish. Better than swordfish. Very good eating"   So much fun to have a 'Shark Guy' friend! even more fun I can now 'calmly' go into the ocean '3 feet'. Maybe. You can follow Dr. Gregory Skomal  follow all the Great Whites and now you can also follow the sharks yourself too. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, created an app called "Sharktivity" in collaboration with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, the Cape Cod National Seashore, and officials from Cape Cod and South Shore towns to raise awareness of the presence of white sharks off their coast. That should app-solutely come in handy next time you're about to dip your toes in the ocean during shark season.  PS Dr. Gregory Skomal's shark research has spanned multiple fish habitats around the globe. He's written dozens of scientific research papers and has appeared in a number of film and television documentaries, including programs for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, ESPN, and numerous television networks. His most recent book, The Shark Handbook, is a must buy for all shark enthusiasts.

Birds continue to fascinate us, and the Amur Falcon is no exception. This fascinating raptor migrates farther than any other bird of prey on Earth. They reside in the Amur region of north China, Mongolia, Russia for part of the year, and then go on an incredible journey all the way down to South Africa. In this week's podcast we cover just how these birds make such an incredible trek. We also highlight Nagaland in Eastern India. It is a critical stop for the Amur Falcon before a long trek over the Indian Ocean. For years the Amur Falcon was poached by the tens of thousands. But conservationists, to include this week's interview Nuklu Phom, another Whitely Fund for Nature award winner, stepped in and stopped it. This is an incredible story about an incredible bird and not one to miss.  For one cup of "good" coffee a month you can support your favorite podcast on Patreon and give back to conservation. Greg Skomal is the classic adventurous scientist; driven to discover all he can about his subject and willing to go anywhere to slake his thirst for knowledge.   "Not all science is boring." He is the Senior Scientist at the Massachusetts Shark Research Program and works closely with both the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and OCEARCH to study Great White Sharks.  He literally wrote the book on sharks (The Shark Handbook) and is very enthusiastic about translating the science literature for the lay public to learn about and enjoy this fascinating family of animals. “It's one thing to really like sharks, it's another thing to really study them.  I think it's great to love Shark Week, but that doesn't make you a scientist.” Sharks have been around for over 400 million years, an awful long time to perfect the glorious evolution evident in every sweep of their tail and gnash of teeth, and in this podcast Greg shares his fascination with this most amazing of creatures along with stories of his experiences diving with sharks in the Arctic, the Caribbean, and Pacific. Studying sharks has shaped Greg's world, and he talks about how the science has shifted dramatically from only being able to access dead sharks to now being able to track in real time the peregrinations and through that the individual personalities of one of the most well traveled species on the planet, the Great White Shark. “A good scientist needs commitment, curiosity, and passion for their subject." Greg talks about the importance of shark scientists and shark aficionados, what it takes to make a difference, and how you can help sharks tremendously from either path.  Enjoy!
