We see all the headlines and outrage regarding Australain Rugby Union, and to be honest, I'm a bit bored with all the media antics. I want to understand the real intricacies of what created this mess.I sat down with Stephen Hoiles, a former Wallaby, grassroots rugby coach for Randwick, and TV analyst, who knows the current state of rugby inside and out. Drawing from his experience as a player, coach, and fan, Stephen provided an honest and interesting perspective on the numerous problems facing Rugby Union in Australia.Follow Mark Bouris on Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter & YouTube. The Hurricanes are dealing with a million dollar loss while their team rides high at the top of Super Rugby. While franchises don't make their finances public, the $1.4 million loss for 2023 has been revealed as a result of figures released by the Wellington Rugby Union. Hurricanes director Iain Potter says it was a bad year for the franchise for many reasons. "Some argy-bargy with the Australian Rugby Union, creating greater uncertainty around what the competition was supposed to be delivering, probably a little bit of rugby fatigue, probably people are looking for different things." This week my co-host, Professor Eric Knight and I continue our exploration of Thriving Teams with Ben Darwin.Ben is a former Australian Rugby Union player who represented his country 28 times. He retired at the age of 27 after a neck injury and moved in to coaching before co-founding Gain Line Analytics, a company that has uses empirical analysis to understand the way professional sports teams work and succeed with each other. It is one of the more fascinating interviews we have had on the podcast because of the challenging views he has on the traditional drivers of success. Some of the key highlights are:The idea that small groups can be highly effective and the example he gives from military and history to show that it is the cohesion of your team, not the size of the talent pool you pull from that is key to success. His description of cohesion as understanding between the component parts of a team. And that this understanding is much more predictive of outcomes than the individual skill. And How effective cultures have normative behaviors that are established over time, are harder to change and can be learnt more easily across the components of the team.If you would like to know about more Thriving Teams or use the diagnostic we have created to understand how close to Thriving your teams is you can check out our tools here: https://thegreatcoachespodcast.com/thriving-teams/If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at paul@thegreatcoachespodcast.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast. This week on the podcast we sit down with one of the godfathers of Australian Scrum coaching former Wallaby Mark Bell. In Bellys playing career he played his school rugby at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill - Australia's leading rugby nursery. A consistent hooker, Bell played in the undefeated 1st XV premiership team of 1986. That was the springboard to higher honours as a record-equalling ten players from that side were picked in the GPS 1st XV and from there Bell was selected for the Australian Schools tour of New Zealand. He played his club football in Sydney with Northern Suburbs and his strong performances were rewarded in 1992 with a debut for New South Wales against New Zealand. The following year Bell was a member of the Australian squad for the short tour of North America and France but he did not play in any of the Tests. In 1996 both Marco Caputo and Michael Foley were injured in the second Test of the home series against Wales. As a consequence Bell was called into the squad and made his Test debut the following week against Canada in Brisbane. During his coaching career Belly has coached at the Queensland Reds, Japan Rugby National Team, Australian Rugby Union, Suntory, Canon, Easts Rugby Union, Sydney University, Merewether Carlton and the mighty Hunters Hill Under 14s.
