How Art But Make It Sports Matches Viral Sports Moments to Fine Art

The creator of "Art But Make It Sports", LJ Rader, is a lifelong sports professional who has worked for NBC Sports, won an Emmy, and spent nearly a decade at Sportradar, all while quietly teaching himself art history through museum visits, auction houses, and gallery trips. What started as a personal joke on his Instagram - pairing sports photos with fine art - became Art But Make It Sports, an account that now reaches hundreds of thousands of followers and has earned him the admiration of educators who use his posts to teach kids about art history. Oh, and a lot of accusations that he's using AI. He's not. In this episode, Kavitha sits down with LJ to talk about how he actually builds each post, from sourcing the right image to going frame by frame through game footage to find the perfect shot, how he navigates being a self-taught outsider in the notoriously siloed art world, why sports photography deserves to be treated as an art form in its own right, and what's next for him as he leaves his day job to go all in on FanFlare, a new sports data app built around women's volleyball. For the latest episode of the Gaming News Canada Show presented by Bede Gaming, host Steve McAllister is joined by the Senior Vice President of Group Operations at Sportradar, Sophie Thomas. Thomas, who joined Sportradar as Head of Snooker Operations in late 2012 and has served in her current role for a year now, made her maiden appearance on the GNCS at the end of a robust first quarter of 2026. Sportradar tapped into its November 2025 acquisition of IMG Arena to last week announce it is expanding its agreement with Hard Rock Bet to add PGA Tour and UFC data, odds and enhanced in-play wagering capabilities to its existing set of services in the U.S. of A. Earlier in the week, the company announced the launch of igaming brand Playradar which will combine sports data “expertise” with casino content for operators around the world, including Canada. That bit of news came on the heels of the hiring of former Playtech Live CEO Edo Haitin to oversee Sportradar's igaming business. We asked Thomas for her thoughts on last week's announcements and Sportradar's increasing investment in igaming along with: The company's involvement in this summer's FIFA World Cup men's tournament in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico;Other opportunities available through the IMG Arena acquisition;Working with operators to offer more in-play betting products at a time that some regulators and others are asking for a reduction in said products;Sportradar's ongoing role supporting the efforts of leagues, organizations and other bodies in monitoring suspicious betting activity;If/how does the company fit with prediction markets, specifically given Sportradar's deal with Major League Baseball, which just introduced Polymarket as a partner in a multi-year agreement. How Sportradar is exploiting the growth of women's sports in North America and Europe. In this fascinating deep-dive, we explore a groundbreaking initiative that's set to revolutionise our understanding of impact forces in youth American football. The Denver Broncos Foundation and Riddell are launching an unprecedented state-wide programme that will generate millions of data points on player impacts, technique, and load management at the secondary school level. But the real story goes beyond the helmets. How does a thin proprietary film inside each helmet capture and translate impact data? What insights can coaches extract from nearly a million recorded impacts across 13,000 secondary school athletes? And most intriguingly - could this massive data collection effort fundamentally change how we approach technique development and injury prevention in contact sports? Join us as we dissect the technology with Riddell's Brian Kopp and explore the programme's implementation with the Broncos Foundation's Allie Engelken. We'll examine: The science behind impact sensing technology How real-time analytics are revolutionising coaching methodology The potential implications for evidence-based practice in youth sports Whether you're a sports scientist, strength coach, or performance specialist, this episode offers unprecedented insights into the future of data-driven player development. This isn't just about American football - it's about understanding how technology can bridge the gap between elite and grassroots sports science. About Allie Engelken As Executive Director of the Denver Broncos Foundation, Allie Engelken is driving transformative change in youth sports across Colorado. With extensive experience in community development and sports philanthropy, she leads strategic initiatives that bridge the gap between professional and grassroots sports. Under her leadership, the Foundation has launched unprecedented programs, including the largest statewide smart helmet initiative in American football history.
