El 25 de diciembre de 1985, mientras la Ciudad de México despertaba tras la Navidad, el Museo Nacional de Antropología enfrentaba el mayor robo de su historia. Vitrinas rotas, huellas de zapatos, cables quemados y un vacío imposible de ocultar: más de cien piezas arqueológicas habían desaparecido.Este video reconstruye uno de los episodios más oscuros del patrimonio cultural mexicano. Un atraco planeado con precisión, ejecutado sin violencia, que dejó al descubierto la fragilidad institucional del museo más importante del país. Entre las piezas robadas se encontraban objetos del Cenote Sagrado de Chichén Itzá, la ofrenda funeraria de Pakal, piezas de oro mixtecas, la máscara zapoteca del Dios Murciélago y la célebre vasija de obsidiana del mono mexica.Durante años, las autoridades no pudieron determinar con exactitud cuántas piezas fueron sustraídas. No existía un inventario completo. Le jeu de balle maya – le pok-ta-pok, ou pitz – occupe une place fascinante dans l'imaginaire collectif. On y voit un terrain de pierre, deux équipes, une lourde balle de caoutchouc, et un rituel dont l'issue serait, dit-on, fatale pour l'un des joueurs. Depuis des décennies, un récit impressionnant circule : à la fin du match, l'un des participants aurait été mis à mort, parfois même le capitaine de l'équipe gagnante.Ce tableau spectaculaire a nourri films, documentaires sensationnalistes, théories pseudo-historiques… et l'idée d'un sport où l'on risquait sa vie à chaque partie. Il faut dire que plusieurs éléments ont entretenu cette légende : certaines sculptures de Chichén Itzá montrent des scènes de décapitation ; le Popol Vuh, texte sacré des Mayas Quichés, raconte que les dieux du monde souterrain exécutent les “Héros Jumeaux” après un match symbolique ; enfin, les chroniqueurs européens, fascinés ou horrifiés, ont souvent amplifié les rites mésoaméricains pour mieux en souligner la “brutalité”.Tout cela a contribué à une vision dramatique : des équipes jouant leur destin sous les yeux des dieux, un seul survivant, un seul vaincu… ou un seul vainqueur sacrifié, selon les versions. Pendant longtemps, cette image a semblé plausible, tant le jeu avait une dimension sacrée : il représentait la lutte cosmique entre lumière et ténèbres, vie et mort. Et les Mayas pratiquaient effectivement parfois des sacrifices humains, ce qui renforçait la crédibilité de ce scénario dans l'opinion moderne.Mais tout change lorsqu'on se tourne vers l'archéologie et l'épigraphie mayas. Les inscriptions, les études iconographiques, les textes retrouvés au fil du XXᵉ et XXIᵉ siècle, racontent une histoire beaucoup plus nuancée — et très différente de la version populaire.Alors, les joueurs étaient-ils sacrifiés ?La réponse est non.Les spécialistes sont unanimes : les joueurs de balle n'étaient pas systématiquement sacrifiés, et aucune source fiable n'affirme que le capitaine de l'équipe victorieuse devait mourir. Les rares scènes de décapitation ne décrivent pas un match réel, mais une symbolique cosmologique. Quant aux sacrifices associés au jeu, ils concernaient, dans certains rituels très particuliers, des prisonniers de guerre, non des athlètes.En réalité, le seul risque réel pour les joueurs était… la violence de la balle elle-même, pouvant peser plus de trois kilos.Ainsi, le grand mythe du vainqueur sacrifié appartient davantage à la légende moderne qu'à l'histoire maya. Quand on évoque les grandes civilisations précolombiennes, deux noms surgissent immédiatement : les Mayas et les Incas. Pourtant, si elles ont toutes deux marqué l'histoire de l'Amérique, elles sont très différentes dans leur localisation, leur organisation et leurs héritages.Les Mayas apparaissent bien avant les Incas. Leur civilisation se développe dès 2000 avant notre ère, dans les forêts tropicales du Yucatán, au sud du Mexique, ainsi qu'au Guatemala, au Belize et au Honduras actuels. Les Incas, eux, émergent beaucoup plus tard, au XIIIᵉ siècle, dans la cordillère des Andes, principalement au Pérou. Cette différence chronologique explique déjà un contraste : quand l'empire inca atteint son apogée au XVe siècle, les grandes cités mayas étaient déjà abandonnées depuis longtemps.Sur le plan politique, le contraste est frappant. Les Mayas n'avaient pas un empire unifié mais une mosaïque de cités-États indépendantes, comme Tikal, Palenque ou Copán, qui rivalisaient entre elles par des guerres et des alliances. Les Incas, au contraire, fondèrent un empire centralisé : le Tawantinsuyu. Depuis Cuzco, l'empereur, appelé le Sapa Inca, exerçait un pouvoir absolu sur des millions de sujets et un territoire immense s'étendant de la Colombie jusqu'au Chili.Sur le plan culturel, les Mayas brillèrent surtout par leur écriture et leurs connaissances scientifiques. Ils développèrent un système d'écriture hiéroglyphique complexe, unique en Amérique, qui permettait de noter aussi bien des événements politiques que des récits mythologiques. Ils élaborèrent également un calendrier extrêmement précis, basé sur l'astronomie, et laissèrent des monuments impressionnants comme les pyramides de Chichén Itzá. Les Incas, eux, ne connaissaient pas l'écriture. Pour conserver la mémoire des tributs ou des recensements, ils utilisaient les quipus, des cordelettes nouées dont les combinaisons servaient de code numérique. Leur génie s'exprima surtout dans l'ingénierie : routes pavées traversant les Andes, ponts suspendus, systèmes d'irrigation et villes perchées comme Machu Picchu.Enfin, leurs religions différaient. Les Mayas pratiquaient des rituels sanglants pour apaiser leurs dieux, y compris des sacrifices humains. Les Incas, eux, adoraient surtout Inti, le dieu Soleil, et considéraient l'empereur comme son descendant direct. Leurs sacrifices humains existaient, mais étaient plus rares et souvent réservés à des moments exceptionnels.En somme, les Mayas furent des astronomes et des scribes brillants, mais fragmentés politiquement. Les Incas, eux, bâtirent un empire solide et organisé, mais sans écriture. Yucatán es un estado donde el pasado maya sigue vivo en su lengua, sus costumbres y sus ciudades ancestrales. Entre selvas, cenotes y mares turquesa, Yucatán guarda vestigios imponentes como Chichén Itzá y Uxmal, y una riqueza cultural que se refleja tanto en su gastronomía, como sus fiestas y sus vastas leyendas. 

Fray Diego de Landa, en su libro La Relación de las Cosas de Yucatán, hace la primera mención de la antigua Chichen Itzá, a partir de entonces la ciudad se colocó en el imaginario popular. A sus ruinas querían llegar un gran número de viajeros y exploradores quienes, de una forma u otra, buscaban beneficio y renombre a través de sus piedras. Diversas investigaciones se han desarrollado en torno a sus vestigios, pintura mural e iconografía, principalmente durante el siglo XX. En la actualidad, Chichén Itzá se ha convertido en una meca, que año tras año es visitada por miles de turistas, quienes buscan obtener de sus piedras, los favores divinos de los antiguos dioses mayas. A través de un viaje al pasado de Chichen Itzá, conoceremos el primer centro político religioso de la urbe o "Serie Inicial", accederemos a las residencias de la élite, y también recorreremos la Gran Nivelación, la muralla y edificios emblemáticos como el Castillo y el Templo de los Guerreros. Todo ello, a través de una crónica que, con singular estilo, Juan Villoro realiza guiado por los arqueólogos Rafael Cobos, José Huchim y Luis Alberto Martos.

Rebel Ridge (2024) is a Netflix action thriller written, produced, directed and edited by Jeremy (Green Room) Saulnier. While on his way, he is rammed off his bike by local police officers who seize the bail money worth $36,000 via civil forfeiture. Terry refuses to give in to the police and enlists the support of AnnaSophia Robb's Summer McBride, a courthouse clerk. After she discovers a number of cases similar to Terry's cousin they uncover a history of police corruption. Rebel Ridge is a taut thriller with elements of the western genre. Recommendability scores were very high, only let down by low small screen - we wanted to see this at the cinema Netflix! But it still scores 3.97 overall.
