Hairdressers descended upon Oxford Street on October 8th, 1906 to witness Karl Nessler's first public demonstration of his pioneering new ‘perm' - a style which didn't have its heyday until some eighty years later.Creating a long-lasting curl had been a goal for many stylists over the decades, but Nessler had hit upon a winning combination of technique and chemicals. He achieved this by subjecting his wife, Catherine, to a seemingly endless onslaught of painful and laborious experiments. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal the system of weights, pulleys and chandeliers that facilitated these early experiments; discuss the parallel movement for (yet more risky) chemical relaxers in the African-American community; and compare notes on the weirdest hairdos they've permitted on their own heads... Further Reading:• ‘The Story Of Hair and The Nessler Wave' (Timeless Tales, 2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Pi11YxY4ww• ‘Inside the heated history of the permanent wave machine' (The State Museum of Pennsylvania): http://statemuseumpa.org/wave-machine/• ‘Making waves: Celebrating the centenary of the perm' (The Times, 2006): https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/making-waves-tnttbrtt30nFor bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/RetrospectorsWe'll be back on Monday! Yes, everything sucks. We get it. We try to talk through it to start today's show. It's complicated. Near the bottom of Hour 1, PressBox Ravens beat writer Bo Smolka joined us to discuss the injuries to Gus Edwards and Marcus Peters, what the backfield might look like and more. Near the end of Hour 1, legendary Ravens running back Jamal Lewis joined us to share his thoughts on why the group of Latavius Murray, Davonta Freeman and Le'Veon Bell isn't a bad group at all in his mind and might be as good as what the Ravens would have had. Early in Hour 2, former Raiders/Penn State QB Matt McGloin checked in to tell us about his former teammate Latavius Murray and to preview Maryland/Howard, which he's calling for Big Ten Network tomorrow night. Near the bottom of Hour 2, CBS' Brad Nessler checked in before he calls Navy/Air Force tomorrow on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Late in Hour 2 "Kyle in the Kitchen" delivered deli nachos. We wrapped by chatting with Hall of Famer Kurt Warner (who is calling Ravens/Raiders for Westwood One). The interview was recorded BEFORE the injuries but Warner believed Murray made all the sense in the world for the Ravens.

Special Friday Episode #32 of the Coach Hos Podcast. https://youtu.be/6dL3e6bWYio Today we talked with Trent Nessler, Sports PT, Movement Specialist and President of Rebound Vitality. 0-15: Introduction and background on Trent Nessler from his start with working with ACL reconstruction patients and his venture towards creating a system used to help analyze movement criteria with advanced technology. 15-30: The problem with current Return to Sport testing, the hot topic involving the lack of standardization of criteria, the issues regarding reliance on the “good side” for Limb Symmetry Index (LSI). Each athlete and each sport requires movements and stressors that act differently on each person which limits normative value data. Physical Therapists need to get more involved in the research and question current treatment approaches. 30-45: Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT) can help with recovery following surgical procedures and Trent explains his first hand experience with using BFR. ACL protocols drastically differ across regions of the country and lack standardization. Kinesiophobia can be reduced by introducing early on single limb training. The severity of deficits amongst the current adolescent sports population. The importance of nutrition and hydration education for performance and rehab. 45-60: The danger of fixating on “return to running”, time based criteria 50-60: How Blood Flow Restriction works and its benefits for healing, performance and improving outcomes. 60-75: Athletes that can move better are at less risk for injury and concussions. Neuroplastic changes occur following major injury such as ACL requiring neuromuscular training and less reliance on visual input to restore the sensory awareness function. How BFR can help for training and maximizing time with exercise choices. Types of BFR cuffs and parameters for compression. 75-90: Trent's biggest obsessions and keys for success. With 19 years clinical experience, Dr. Nessler challenges himself to be a thought leader in sports medicine, injury prevention and movement dysfunction. With 18 years’ experience in management of outpatient physical therapy and athletic training programs, he constantly challenges conventional wisdom to think outside the box in developing applications utilizing evidence based practice integrated with the latest technology in order to address an epidemic problem of non-contact injuries in youth athletics. Through years of clinical research and practical clinical applications, Dr. Nessler has developed a comprehensive methodology on how to assess the lower kinetic chain in athletes that not only reduces injury rates but also improves athletic performance. In 2014, he blended this knowledge with the Xbox One to develop a fully automated movement assessment that could be used in pre-participation athletic physicals and military settings. Today, Dr. Nessler looks to continue this development of ways to apply the latest technology and biomechanical sciences to allow for scalable solutions to have profound impact on the non-contact injury epidemic impacting our kids today. Building Athletes to Perform, Building Athletes to Last™!

The Best in Rehab podcast hosts Steven Hnat, PT, DPT, OCS and Chad Garvey, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT invite their guest, Trent Nessler, PT, MPT, DPT, to enlighten listeners on automated movement assessments for athletes. Dr. Nessler is the Director of National Sports Medicine for Select Medical. He has published a human movement textbook and developed a biomechanical analysis for athletes’ injury assessment and performance enhancement. Dr. Nessler uncovers what brought him to become a physical therapist and the mentors that helped him along the way, one being Carl DeRosa, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA (8:42). He also elaborates on the research done by Dr. Tim Hewett in his research article, “Understanding and Preventing ACL Injuries” (9:14). He highlights data collected on D2 college football athletes’ knee valgus and moving away from injury prevention terminology and focusing on performance (11:08). There have been an influx in ACL injuries and statistics have shown that it is an epidemic in the athletic population. Dr. Nessler expands on this topic in his research publication in the Current Reviews of Musculoskeletal Medicine, “ACL Injury Prevention: What Does Research Tell Us?” (21:05). The DorsaVi system is used to quantify human movement. This system can evaluate an athlete in 15 minutes and gives a comprehensive, automated report to determine whether he or she is at risk (16:12). The DorsaVi is now being used by two NFL teams, two NBA teams, and one NHL team (18:19). Dr. Nessler states that based on D1 studies, “30,000-50,000 dollars have been saved per team per season” (18:30). Research shows that “if an athlete completes the movement assessment and they perform the ACL Play it Safe program they have about a 41% improvement on the movement assessment” (19:42). Lesley Parrish, PT is involved in several of these research studies for volleyball, soccer, and football athletes (20:39). Dr. Nessler is the host of an orthopedic round table with Dr. James Andrews, discussing return to play and the extensive research and tests that accompany this topic (22:38). One of the protocols Dr. Nessler suggests is the FAST FP, a fatigue protocol that is efficient and useful (24:50). Assessments are extremely important for injury prevention and performance. KORT is now offering the DorsaVi movement analysis technology. For more information, visit our website at KORT.com or stop by a clinic today!
