“I'm always writing the book I most want to read in that particular moment.” That's a line from novelist Ellen Meister, offered in an exchange with podcast host Daniel Paisner. The two recently shared a stage at the Port Washington Public Library – a couple of Long Island authors talking about craft and career in front of a local audience. The event went so well, we've decided to repurpose the discussion here. Join us as we hear from both panelists on what it means to pursue a writing life, where to look for inspiration, and how to keep at it even when you might be falling short of your own expectations. Ellen Meister is the author of several novels, including The Rooftop Party, Love Sold Separately, Dorothy Parker Drank Here, and Farewell, Dorothy Parker. Her most recent novel, Take My Husband, was published in August 2022 to wide critical acclaim and is the focus of much of this conversation. Ellen is also an editor, book coach, ghostwriter, and frequent contributor to Long Island Woman Magazine. She teaches creative writing at Long Island University Hutton House Lectures and previously at Hofstra University. The joint appearance, sponsored by the Friends of the Library and moderated by the library's programming coordinator Jeff Zeh, was meant to also highlight Daniel Paisner's new novel, Balloon Dog, which was published in June, 2022 to a somewhat narrower swath of critical acclaim and is also the focus of much of this conversation. In this episode Daniel Paisner joins me to talk about his novel ‘Balloon Dog', a story driven by a would-be writer protagonist who looks at the world through snatches of classic rock lyrics. The novel tells the story of a brazen art heist gone sideways and asks readers to consider what it means to leave a mark and what it takes to be swept up in the same currents that move the rest of the world. Later, Brad Page, host of I'm In Love With That Song podcast, another proud member of the Pantheon Podcast Network, drops by to do a deep dive into the song that inspired the novel ‘Balloon Dog': The Rolling Stones' “Satisfaction.” MUSIC IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Theme to ‘The Monkees' TV show “Gloria” by Patti Smith “Don't Think Twice, It's All Right” by Odetta “Dreamer” by Ozzy Osbourne “Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones “High Hopes” by Panic! In this week's episode, we spoke to Daniel Paisner, ghostwriter of seventeen NYT bestselling books among many, many others. Daniel is also a podcaster and author of his own novels, the latest of which came out this year. His long-spanning career includes writing with and for Gilbert Gottfried, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Aoki, Anthony Quinn, Serena Williams, and more. We dove into Daniel's experience ghostwriting, what makes a good collaboration and collaborator, ghostwriting advice, why and when he decided to write his own works, and more. Our conversation was extremely interesting and informative, and we got to hear about his own podcast, As Told To, a show where each episode features a conversation between Daniel and another ghostwriter. Daniel's latest book, Balloon Dog, is available now on Kobo. You can find out more about Daniel and his work on his website, or by visiting him on TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook.
Where does editing leave off and ghostwriting begin? How cool is it to pass yourself off as the writer if you haven't done any of the writing? How much recognition do "collaborators" deserve? Should ghostwriters be completely anonymous? When should they refuse assignments? How does one work with a person whose views are opposed to yours? Where does craft end and art take over? What explains a successful collaboration? Is this whole business ethical? I ask these and other bumptious questions of seasoned, successful ghostwriter and novelist Dan Paiser, plus I pose a few from interested party David Mitchell whose first novel, Ghostwritten, embroils us in a cacophony of narrative voices. Dan also delivers some excellent stories about Ivanka and The Donald, and Whoopi, and others, and we spend a bit of time talking about creativity, and Dan's latest novel, Balloon Dog.
This week, we look at the final paragraphs of Galatians where Paul contrasts two kinds of boasting: in the flesh or in the cross. Through exploring and contrasting the artwork of Jeff Koons and Matthias Grünewald we learn about God's vision for overcoming darkness through sacrificial love and the invitation to join Jesus in the pattern of dying and rising. This is the 17th sermon in our series on Galatians and was originally preached Nov 6, 2022.

Thomas Edison and the French Lumiere brothers have widely been credited with inventing motion pictures, but there's another strong contender for the distinction: Louis LePrince, a driven inventor who dedicated every moment of his life and most of his money to making moving pictures not only possible but accessible enough to be widely available—and, in the process, to change the world. But he's never been given proper credit for the feat because, like a character in a movie, he disappeared without a trace just before he announced his completed invention in 1890. Film producer and author Paul Fischer tells the riveting tale in his new book The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures, and in this episode, he talks to us about the worldwide race to invent and perfect motion picture technology, LePrince's utopian vision of what film would do for the world, what might have happened to LePrince—and how Edison may or may not have been involved in his disappearance. There's a book for that: Binge Times: Inside Hollywood's Furious Billion-Dollar Battle to Take Down Netflix, entertainment journalists Dade Hayes and Dawn Chmielewski's insider history on how Netflix started the game with those little red envelopes of DVDs, and just a few short years had us all Netflixing and chilling – and bingeing entire TV series on the regular. As Hayes details, that was the alert to other entertainment brands to get their stream on ASAP, and here we are a decade and a half later, not only watching our favorite retro TV shows, but now most of all our original programming (not to mention a lot of reboots of those retro TV faves!) on several streaming networks. And Binge Times not only tells us how we got here, but clues us in on where the streaming business may be headed, including its impact on the rapidly changing movie industry.
