This week we're catching up with Richard Kelsey and Geoff Huens from online beer retailer Beer Cartel. Late last year Beer Cartel released its results and advised it was moving to an online-only model, closing its Artamon store. With more than a decade of experience watching the growth of craft beer and the various fashions, from rare imports and growlers towards a move to local craft beer, as well as the significant jump in online during the pandemic, I was interested to hear about how these trends are impacting the decisions that a comparatively small online retailer is making. Beer Cartel also raised nearly $1.5 million on a valuation of $20 million dollars 18 months ago, and with providing annual financial reports a requirement for businesses that raise funds in this way, it provides a window into the state of the craft industry, and we chat about how the business is going and also their decision to crowdfund and the results. Brewing great beer takes time and is considered artistry by brewers. Polishing the art and expanding for the future is made easier with fluidic controls and automation of your processes, enabling more time for craft brewing density and flavours, instead of stirring the mix. This is where Bürkert can assist. Burkert supports their Australian customers with single cable technology, for future-proofing their tomorrow. Now that's Smart. visit www.burkert.com.au. We thank Rallings Labels and Stickers for sponsoring this podcast. Brewers, if you are still applying self-adhesive labels to your bottles and cans, and believe that this is a sustainable solution for your packaging needs, you may want to call Rallings Labels, Stickers and Packaging and discuss your options with them. The team at Rallings will walk you through the various options available to you, that are more sustainable than applying self-adhesive labels which don't help the environment at all. Whilst they do produce self-adhesive labels for many breweries, there is a much better way to ensure that your carbon footprint is lower than what you are currently doing by utilising pre-sleeved cans. This week we chat with Luke Scott who has just announced that, after 13 years, he is leaving the Prickly Moses brewery in Victoria's Otways. Luke leaves his current role to join start-up Sou' West Brewing in the old Quicksilver building on Victoria's Surf Coast. Luke is one of those brewers who has seen a lot of his change over his 13 years at the brewery, one that you may not even have heard of if you're not from Victoria, and that's because the business has changed focus as the industry has grown from 100 breweries nationally to somewhere around 500. Luke has seen the business move from a brewery looking for national markets, to a locally focused brewery catering the community. We hear what he has learned and seen change as the craft brewing industry he entered has changed. We also hear about what he has planned for the new venture. In this special edition, we catch up with GABS Beer Festival and Spectacular Enterprises General Manager, Mike Bray, and Festival Director, Craig Williams. It's no secret that 2020 has been a brutal year for events. We wanted to catch up with Mike and Craig for a while to find out how they were travelling and what the plans were for 2021, and to get Mike's thoughts on acquiring the business just months before the pandemic. However, during the course of the chat they drop a few announcements and so we have brought the release of this episode forward to release it as a special edition to coincide with their releasing the news themselves. Even without the news, it's a great chat about events and managing the COVID year, as well as the Hottest 100 and can design awards. This week we speak with Andy Scade and Mike Morgan, the President and Secretary of the West Australian Brewing Association. WABA as it is known, was the first association representing the interests of Australia's nascent craft brewing scene of microbrewers as they were then known. They are also the last, as the various state bodies have elected to join the IBA as state chapters, something that WABA has declined to do. With more than 50 members, it has developed into a vibrant state association and has recently launched its new look and new branding and a campaign urging West Australians to Drink West, Drink Best. We speak to Andy and Mike, who work for Lion-owned Bevy Brewing and independent Blasta Brewing about WABA and what makes WA a little different to the eastern states that have chosen independence as a flag to rally around.
