It's been described as the most underappreciated and spectacular feature of the West Coast town of Greymouth. And it gets its nickname because it's said to be so cold it could cut you in half like a barber's razor. It is the "Barber" - a unique cloud formation usually only seen in sunny cold conditions.
A boil water notice remains in place for the greater Greymouth area two weeks after it was first imposed. Grey District Mayor Tania Gibson spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Schools and businesses in the West Coast town of Greymouth have been forced to shut with locals needing to boil their water because of possible contamination. A boil water notice has been in place since yesterday morning. It comes after water samples for the town and wider area found bacteria linked to human and animal waste in water supplies, including low levels of E Coli at one of them. Reporter Adam Burns has more.
Greymouth's Paul Coll has opened his New Zealand Open title defence with a dominant 3-nil victory over Japanese number 1 Ryunosuke Tsukue in Christchurch.

A principal's sceptical about the Government's ambitious school lunch budget. The Government says it's saving $130 million a year by reducing the cost per meal from $8 to $3. Schools preparing meals internally will get $4 a student to keep hiring people to prepare food. Greymouth High School principal Samantha Mortimer told Ryan Bridge that hungry children will eat anything, but they deserve high quality food. She's questioning how everything will be done for that price, as it's not just about the food, there are costs around production, wages, and transport. The downpour has moved to Kapiti and Porirua which both have severe weather warnings in place, as well as Taranaki. There's already flooding across the Wellington region, while 50 homes in Greymouth have been cut off because of a slip after the region was battered by heavy downpours overnight. Wellington Region Emergency Management Regional Manager Jeremy Holmes speaks to Lisa Owen.
Around 50 homes in Greymouth are still cut off by two major slips on the Arnott Heights hill side. Grey District mayor Tania Gibson spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Surface flooding is continuing in the wider Wellington region, with commuters bracing for more downpours. High tides are coinciding with torrential rain to spell a perfect storm of disruption, and motorists are being warned to expect delays. Metservice forecaster Lewis Ferris says the rain is persisting, but the worst should have passed. "It does look like the heaviest of the rain is kind of on that easing trend. There are still some showers around, it's not going to be that same sort of widespread, intense rainfall that we saw around dawn." Meanwhile in Greymouth, landslides fuelled by the recent bad weather have left residents out of power. About 50 homes are cut off in Arnott Heights - with a second slump this morning adding more debris. Mayor Tania Gibson says contractors have been delivered residents essentials like medication. "But anything that's not essential - I think they're pretty right, we're in close contact - they just need to hold out and wait up there for a bit longer." "Enrobed by chiselled cliff tops, wild beaches and the serene Grey Valley, the West Coast's biggest town of Greymouth is so much more than just a gateway to the region. Explorer Thomas Brunner named the river in honour Governor George Edward Grey, which also gave rise to the town's name. The town centre is built on the site of the former Māori pa called Māwhera, which translates as 'wide spread river mouth'. The latest attraction in town that is the worth the trip alone is Pounamu Pathway – Māwhera." Read Mike's full article here. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Resource and Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones has given quite a fiery speech in the House taking aim at the Greens over Labour's oil and gas ban, calling out their opposition to using Kiwi coal. "We can power up New Zealand by using our domestic coal resources. But that party would rather see New Zealanders thrown on the unemployment scrap heap as we've witnessed this week. They would rather see people cold, they would rather see people in their retirement years too afraid to put the jug on or the sleeping blanket just so they can cover themselves in an ideological blanket of piety and self-righteousness." That was not scripted, that was just Shane Jones going hell for leather in the House. A very enjoyable speech, he's easy to listen to, isn't he? He makes a point, doesn't he, about the workers who are being affected by all of the closures that are happening around the country at the moment. I flicked off an email to Methanex yesterday because they've shuttered operations at their plant until October and I just wanted to check are you definitely going to reopen? They said yes, we are looking forward to restarting operations in November. So that is good, but they do say this about our current electricity system, and I think it just sums it up. "Our highly renewable electricity sector is increasingly reliant on intermittent renewable power generation which needs to be supported by thermal generation to provide energy security when the rain doesn't fall, the wind doesn't blow or the sun doesn't shine." During the last three years, they've operated at reduced rates or shut plants over high electricity demand periods during winter to ensure there's enough gas for everyone to go around. Now, this is the interesting part: "While the government has recently signalled positive policy changes like reversing the offshore oil and gas ban, we believe additional support policies are urgently needed for New Zealand's incumbent upstream companies such as OMV, Todd and Greymouth to help improve confidence and enable the development of future gas supplies to prevent the deindustrialisation of our economy." "Amid the treasury of winning attractions across the West Coast, sampling its spoil of historic pubs, steeped in character and heritage is an irrepressible draw. They are keepers of the past and bridges to the present, proudly speaking to our pioneering history, of heady gold and coal rushes, and trail-blazing development. A starring specimen is Formerly The Blackball Hilton, located at the foot of the Paparoa ranges, just 29km from Greymouth." "From Blackball, it's a short drive to one of the most powerful heritage sites on the West, the Brunner Mine Memorial Site. In a region wrenched by many a mining disaster, this magnificently preserved site is a memorial to New Zealand's worst mining disaster of all. Strung along the slopes of a deep gorge carved out by the Grey River, Thomas Brunner not only named the river, but the mine bears the name of this intrepid overland explorer, who discovered the vast black coal seam in 1847. Straddling both sides of the river, and crowned with a dramatic suspension bridge, every twist of the pathways around the 2km-long loop walk leads you to vestiges of the old mine." The insular Greymouth community of Gloriavale has kept Kiwis enthralled as testimonies keep emerging. A new TVNZ documentary, Escaping Utopia, promises to unveil the stories of people who've left the community- and the struggles they've endured. Co-director Justin Pemberton says Gloriavale is going through a transitionary period following the death of their former leader. "The community is now imploding, it's going through some sort of- either regeneration or collapse, and we don't really know which yet, it's very much a live story. I think that's why we felt so compelled to need to go and visit." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Victims of a predator in the Gloriavale Christian community have described him as an opportunist who used the vulnerability of his victims to exploit them. Jonathan Benjamin has been sentenced to 11 years and 10 months in prison for more than 20 charges of sexual offending against children - the youngest only 5 or 6 years old at the time. His offending spans more than three decades from the 1980s and his charges relate to 9 victims at the reclusive community during its time on the West Coast and earlier, when it was based in North Canterbury. Anna Sargent was in court in Greymouth.
Greymouth mayor Tania Gibson says the council is taking a stand to shut down a dump she says is too environmentally risky. The Grey District Council is calling on the West Coast Regional Council to revoke all resource consents for the Taylorville Resource Park in Coal Creek, near Greymouth. The Environmental Protection Authority issued an abatement notice for the landfill, after an investigation found an unlined sediment pond was discharging contaminated water. It's the latest in a series of complaints about the landfill, which is consented to take demolition waste and contaminated material including asbestos and coal-tar. Gibson spoke to Corin Dann.
The Police Association says black mould and leaky ceilings in stations throughout the country are making it difficult for officers to do their jobs. It says many buildings are a health and safety hazard after so many years of neglect. These include stations in Greymouth, Nelson and Blenheim. The association's president Chris Cahill spoke to Corin Dann.

It's a resounding fail for Gloriavale Christian school according to its latest ERO report card. The private school operates out of the secretive community on the West coast of the South Island about 60km east of Greymouth. Former leaders and members have been convicted of child abuse and the employment court recently ruled young people who worked long hours in extremely punishing conditions since they were children were in fact employees and not volunteers. Now according to the Education Review Office report, the school's list of failings is long and serious. Not all the school's managers have passed a fit and proper persons assessment. And ERO is not assured the health and safety of students is being sufficiently monitored. Almost 20% of the enrolled students are not turning up class. 25 students from a special class are supposidly being taught at home by their mothers, but they don't have home school exemptions. Older boys have a secondary teacher while girls of the same age are taught by an early childhood teacher. And schooling stops at year 10, before NCEA kicks in. The report concludes Gloriavale Christian School is not providing an adequate education and doesn't meet the criteria for registration as a private school. The Education Review Office declined to be interviewed. Victory Disciple is a former student and a teacher at Gloriavale. She, along with her husband Hopeful and six children left in 2021: both believe the school should be shut down.
Business owners around Greymouth on the South Island's West Coast know about tough times, trading through coal mine closures, the Christchurch quakes and recessions. And then there's Covid and a cost of living crunch. Our reporter Jimmy Ellingham and cameraman Nick Monro visited the region to gauge pre-election business confidence in the area.
Tourism is riding high on the West Coast, with visitors and workers returning in droves. The region was hit hard during the pandemic, and it struggled to attract staff once the tourists did return. As the recovery kicks in, operators will meet on Thursday at a sold-out hui in Greymouth to share ideas, collaborate and prepare for the summer ahead. Tourism reporter Tess Brunton has more.

Greymouth Gas Turangi Limited has today been granted an offshore petroleum exploration permit from the Government. A grand prize for a record breaking finish in a South Island ultra marathon has sparked an even bigger international debate about sexism. Organisers of the South Island Ultra race offered a $10,000 cash prize to the first person to break 8 hours in the 100km race along the west coast wilderness track, starting in Greymouth and ending in Hokitika. A backlash followed with critics claiming the cash prize overwhelmingly favours men who are more likely than women to make the 8 hour goal. Organisers have since changed the prize pool. A court has heard Gloriavale can't afford to pay everyone wages, and employment relationships would destroy the Christian community's way of life. Gloriavale women have been giving evidence in an Employment Court case, where their work has been described as a labour of love, not slave labour. Jean Edwards reports from Greymouth.
A significant number of Gloriavale members are expected to be in the public gallery when the Employment Court sits in Greymouth this week. Six former Gloriavale women are seeking a ruling that they were employees of the West Coast Christian community, not volunteers. Firefighers and Civil Defence staff in Greymouth are assessing damage after a tornado ripped through the town. The twister left blown-out windows and ripped-up roofs on at least four houses and a school building. Grey District Mayor Tania Gibson has been surveying damage and spoke to Corin Dann.
Marlborough District Council wants to hear from the public on what should be done with Marlborough Sounds roads to make them safe and resilient against future flood events. Since that devastating rain in August, Samantha says it's been a rather dry summer, with the river flows so low in some places that the perennial toxic algae issue in the lower reaches of certain rivers - the Maitai in Nelson and the Waiiti in Tasman. Further down the coast in Greymouth, a conserve water notice has been in place for the Greater Greymouth area since January 4th and in Blackball since January 11. Greymouth has recently experienced some of the hottest recorded temperatures in over 75 years - which has put extreme pressure on local water supplies with usage being more than double the typical amount in some instances.

It's a coup for Greymouth Mayor Tania Gibson. She spoke to Corin Dann.
A common scenario New Zealanders are familiar with involves skilled professionals moving to Australia for the higher wages, opportunities, and weather. Greymouth-based nurse Sophie Carey has bucked the trend by moving from Australia to New Zealand's West Coast. She explained to Andrew Dickens why she chose to leave Australia and how it compares to Greymouth in terms of living and work-life balance. Sophie was also drawn in by the nation's housing market most of all. "We found it really easy to enter the housing market over here on the coast, and that was after doing a bit of looking and searching around in Christchurch. A lot more affordable, and a lot less stress trying to find a way to enter the property market over here." LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At least a dozen schools across the country have been forced into lockdown or evacuated, after being threatened by phone. Police are investigating after schools in Masterton, Kaikoura, Greymouth, Queenstown, Levin, Whanganui, Rolleston, Takaka, Geraldine, Dunstan, Ashburton and Palmerston North were targeted. It's the second time this week serious threats have been directed at schools. And while some chose to evacuate, others went into lockdown and resumed classes later in the day. Police assistant commissioner Bruce O'Brien has told Checkpoint police are working hard to understand and identify origins of the threats being made to schools around the country. The majority of phone call threats are referring to an explosive device, which is why police believe the calls are coming from the same person, O'Brien said. He said he's not 100 percent certain they're coming from offshore, but they're looking into it. He said in 2017 a similar threat came from offshore, and that person was held to account.
