In this GASB Podcast episode, Troy interviews Michael McGovern. Michael is based in Gold Coast, Australia. You might know him as one of the founding members of Black Hops Brewing in 2014. He started sweeping floors in a brewery, then tried out an innovative beer idea with his friends.  With their honest storytelling and way of marketing, they grew their audience quicker than anticipated, and not long after, they started to build their first brewery. At the start of their brewing career, they utilized different ways to raise funds for a business. Breaking records; in August 2018, raising about $400,000 on the first day, then last year raising $2.5 million a couple of months ago in an hour, and a staggering $14 million in sales. To achieve the kind of growth Michael experienced, you need to build a sustainable and kickass culture by understanding that people have different currencies, e.g., what motivates them to work for money. That's why it's essential to have different rules for everyone rather than sticking to a one-size-fits-all style to please most people most of the time. This Cast Covers:  The humble origins of Michael McGovern. Several facets of the process of making beer. The current progress of Black Hops Brewing. How the team assembled to start Black Hops. Michael's unique way of earning trust. Different types of raising funds for your startup. Helping others start their breweries through consulting. Truly understanding who you're customers are and what they want. Developing your staff carefully to have a solid team. Prioritizing yourself a little bit more. Links:  Michael's LinkedIn Michael's Company Website Additional Resources: Zen Golf: Mastering the Mental Game by Dr. Joseph Parent     Quotes: “In an online world, you don't really have much other than trust.” — Michael McGovern. “Running a small business is like, you need to be good at finding money. So we would try every option available to us.” — Michael McGovern. “It's great to have talent, but not when it's too heavily weighted in any one person.” — Michael McGovern. “Truly understanding who your customers are and what they want.” — Michael McGovern. “You can get away with making plenty of mistakes if you do it with kindness, and people will allow you the space to grow if you have a kind heart.” — Michael McGovern.

Veteran beer writer Matt Kirkegaard probably doesn't require an introduction for many of you.But just in case, Matt is founder of the beer industry publication Brews News, which I edited for a few years prior to starting Drinks Adventures. His podcast Radio Brews News is Australia's longest running beer podcast, with an archive of 644 episodes at the time of writing.Matt's never short of an opinion. So, following a particularly eventful year in the beer industry, I figured I was long overdue to invite him on for a chat.Coming up for you in this episode, Matt and I discuss the booming non-alcoholic beer segment – is it really booming? We cover the recent trend of breweries raising capital by way equity crowdfunding, with mixed results. And in fact, since we recorded this conversation, Gold Coast outfit Black Hops has completed their latest raise, which at $2.2 million is the largest ever campaign by an Australian brewery. Also on the agenda is the latest IP dispute between Australian breweries, and whether the legendary West Australian company, Feral Brewing, is damaged goods after being listed for sale by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. And in a related discussion, we consider in retrospect the wisdom of Coke naming a craft beer brand after an obscure country town that no-one visits.Matt also fills us in on recent projects at Brews News, including its efforts to find out, how many breweries are there really in Australia?

This week we go back and visit Matt King and Glenn Wignall, who with their friend, Trent Evans, have been quietly building The Grifter brewery in Sydney's inner west. We visited the guys back in January 2018 and we'd invite you to go back and listen to that chat first if you haven't already to learn the background to the brewery, which we don't cover too much in this episode. One of the things that struck me during that earlier conversation was just how quietly The Grifter team got on with what they did and not making much of a noise about it. In the intervening years they have continued not making waves on social media or troubling our email inbox with endless media releases or attention seeking novelties. So it was that when I wandered into the brewery back in March this year to have a beer and chanced to bump into Matt and Glenn and had a brief catch up, I was gobsmacked that they said they were expanding again and had passed through the million litre production mark. That's one of those production figures touted as being close to the other side of the ‘valley of death' as Black Hops has described in its blog post on the topic. The amazing thing about that - something Matt and Glenn confirm in the podcast - is that The Grifter has gone about it so quietly, compared to a brewery such as a Black Hops, that has driven its businesses very successfully harnessing the power of hype and novelty. And I say that in admiration for Black Hops prowess here, not in scorn. But to me, it made The Grifter something of a Unicorn, growing to the scale of some much more notable breweries in such an unassuming way, and in a market that many describe as crowded. I was very keen to go back and revisit the teams and see if I could learn more about their secret sauce, or at least where they learned to make their secret sauce. On today's episode, I am talking with Dan Norris.  Dan is the kung fu master that taught me a lot of the foundational writing, creation, and storytelling skills that are the foundation for this podcast, my books, and a lot of the work I do.  It is very exciting to have him on the show.  Dan continues to be a prolific creator at WP Curve and we get to hear about his WP Curve origin story and life since the startup.  He is still applying many of the same marketing strategies he used to grow the startup in many different areas with lots of different successes.   Dan Norris is a serial entrepreneur, award-winning content marketer, international speaker, and the author of 5 (soon to be 6) number 1 Amazon best-selling business books. In June 2013 after failing at entrepreneurship for 7 years, he founded wpcurve.com, a worldwide team of WordPress developers, providing unlimited small fixes and support, 24 / 7 for a low monthly fee. After becoming profitable in 23 days, WP Curve grew to a team of 40, 850+ customers and passed an annual run rate of over $1m AUD within 2 years and a year later was sold to GoDaddy.  Dan currently works full time as the Co-founder and CEO of one of Australia's fastest-growing craft beer breweries, Black Hops Brewing. In 2015 Black Hops brewed the world's first beer for the biggest entertainment franchise on earth, Call of Duty. In 2018 Black Hops was voted Australia's Champion Small Brewery at the AIBA awards, Australia's number 1 beer competition.  In This Episode: Our stories can be very powerful for our business. Learning these stories over time and how to frame them can shape your business and your outcome in huge ways.  It is important to do things that compound in value as opposed to a more transactional approach.  He does things that compound over time and build up things that are very hard for competitors to replicate.     The people who are successful are making a lot of stuff.  If you are not actively creating a lot of things, that is definitely the place to start.  You have to create something that gets traction.   And so much more! Code Red ABV: 6.2% Style: Red IPA Country/Location: Burleigh Heads, Australia One of my favourite beers from one of my favourite Australian breweries. Code Red, while not particularly red in colour is everything you could want from a red IPA. As soon as the can is cracked to when the beer hits the bottom of your glass your nose is filled with the aromas of toffee and malt. Utilising Citra, Moasaic and Simcoe hops you pick up sublte citrus and pine notes, but the big winner here is the toasted malt and toffee flavours yummmmm. Not a beer for a hot afternoon, more for a night in with a hearty meal or when playing FIFA or crusing NETFLIX. In 2013 Dan Norris was two weeks away from unemployment following 8 straight years of business failure. The following week and with no funding, he launched an idea that within 2 years was a million dollar recurring income business, that was quickly snapped up by GoDaddy. He ‘s now on to his next venture and having a ball. In episode 377 of The Small Business Big Marketing Show, we find out how he's done it. Dan endured 8 straight years of failure before selling his first successful business to GoDaddy for an undisclosed sum in 2016. Instead of finding the nearest hammock and enjoying his new found wealth, he's now having a ball building Black Hops, a boutique brewery on the Gold Coast. One thing you'll quickly pick up about Dan is Instead of messing around validating the plethora of ideas he has, he simply goes ahead and launches, making decisions based on real time information from real customers to build real businesses.   But the marketing gold doesn't stop there: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways has an idea that will save you hours each week I share another low cost marketing idea that should get you a sale … today! And we go back into the vault, revisiting an episode in which my guest was so superficial I wanted to throw up!   Here's what caught my attention from chatting with Black Hops Brewery's Dan Norris: Dan's entrepreneurial spirit I thought it was interesting that Dan regrets, and didn't learn anything from, his 8 years of failure His respect for the power of creating helpful content (if you want to know how to create it then graba  copy of my marketing book, The Boomerang Effect)   Links & Resources mentioned: Dan's personal website Black Hops Brewery How to cut hours off your video viewing time A high-converting sales tactic Interview with Cactus Skincare's Ryan Clark   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont's 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you'll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. When I looked back to the first time I had Dan Norris on the podcast I was floored to see that it was almost 100 episodes ago! Dan as always has been busy creating, producing content,  and even launching a brewery! I had a ton of questions for Dan about Black Hops as well as the sale of WP Curve his books, and the fun project he launched for explainer videos, BoredAF ( I told you he's been busy). At the time of this recording, Dan and his partners with Black Hops Brewing had just hit a milestone revenue mark which was pretty exciting (he was pretty generous with sharing numbers when he could, which I kind of put him on the spot a few times, unintentionally. Sorry Dan!). Of course, I had to pick his brain about content creation. Having gotten sidetracked a couple years ago with the mastermind I was in, you guys know I've come full circle back to working on (and mastering) the fundamentals. Content is a huge part of the fundamentals for me and Dan's book, Content Machine, was pivotal for me. Questions I Asked Dan How has opening a brick & mortar business been for you? (Black Hops has brewery you can go to as well as finding the beer in other local pubs & stores) Your books Content Machine and Create or Hate were game changers for me. What are your thoughts when people say they're not good at creating content? How did your third book, Create or Hate come about? What can you share about the sale of WPCurve to GoDaddy? You've also been very transparent about the challenges you've dealt with to get to where you are (when you discussed getting kicked out of University and not making money with your agency). What are your thoughts about people being hesitant to share the struggles? How do you balance everything? What are your thoughts on focusing on "one thing?" Let's talk about Bored AF. I'm assuming the name came out of you wanting something new to work on, how's that going? What are your thoughts on Medium? What's in store for you next? What You're Going to Learn Where the idea for Black Hops came from How they created a unique beer for a video game (major release) The next step in growing and expanding the brewery and their beers The roll his books play in his overall business plan How the sale of WPCurve to GoDaddy happened (and what he could legally share with us) Dan's thoughts on repurposing content (hint: he's not a fan) What he's focusing on now Where to Connect with Dan Website | Facebook | Twitter Links from this episode A 7-Figure Business in 18 Months with Dan Norris WPCP: 056 Black Hops Brewing Content Machine Create or Hate 7 Day Startup Operation Brewery

I'm so excited to get the chance to catch up with Dan Norris in today's podcast. He's the kind of guy who knows how to get stuff done and this was a great interview as he shares with the audience how he attains much of his success. Dan started his online career through blogging. He's always been a content machine, but it wasn't until just a few years ago that he started writing great content that gained traction. This traction led to his first book, and perennial best seller, ‘The 7 Day Startup.' He's never been able to sit on content after it's created, so as he wrote the book over a handful of weeks, he would publish parts of it as whole articles on his blog to see what stuck with readers. When it comes to creating content, Dan doesn't have any kind of daily rituals to force him to churn it out. Instead, he writes in short bursts when he feels the inspiration to do so, and only on things that really interest him. (that's the key!) “It's quite easy to write a lot when you're actually really into it.” Of course the book turned out great, and with the aid of a community Facebook group, he was able to get the word out about it and elicit many great reviews. He now has two versions of popular 7-Day Startup membership groups; the free Facebook group, and a paid membership site where users get advanced support on their business and access to educational content. To help manage these groups, he depends on the support of his assistants. This is another process that Dan leverages to free up his time: utilizing low cost support to do the bulk of the necessary tasks that help with nurturing the group. Some of the things that his VAs handle within the group: Welcoming new members Posting the weekly topic to spark conversations Promoting the paid-group within the free group Drafting the weekly thread summary email weekly tasks that would otherwise take up too much of Dan's time Outsourcing is a cheap way to get really good people. He works with a small team in the Philippines where the cost of living is much cheaper, so the lower wage is actually quite good. Protip for outsourcing: For each task you hand off to your VA, Dan recommends creating a set of instructions using text, images and video detailing exactly how it should be done. There's some hand holding in the beginning, but repeat tasks get learned quickly and you'll eventually start saving yourself loads of time. Dan is definitely a doer, and a go getter and he embodies the boldness that is being the person that will put themselves out there while others sit back and watch. He believes, If you do this enough, you will get rewarded. He notes that for someone like him, the entrepreneurial life is naturally where he belongs. He felt out of place doing anything but, and he likes the freedom of being an entrepreneur and the rewards it brings. “The people who get rewarded are the people that just do the work”   SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How did he reach such a large audience with his first book? Does Dan have a daily writing habit that helps him pump out the content? Can he explain the process of outsourcing to a VA in the Philippines? Has he transitioned to outsourcing his content creation? How did Activision (creators of Call of Duty) come to contact him to create the Black Hops beer?   IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How Dan gets away with not having a daily writing habit How his VA helps him with his valuable Instagram account The reason why you may want to use a personal brand to support and share your products Plus much more…   DON'T STOP HERE… Connect with Dan Norris: Website | Instagram | Twitter | Snapchat 7 Day Startup: Website | Facebook Delegate your Instagram Marketing Strategy for $30 per Week: Article Starters & Makers: Website | Facebook Black Hops Beer WP Curve   ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: The Dynamite Circle: Website The Bold Life Movement Book: Facebook Group

This week Ben, Alex and Aadil have only one game to discuss and that is the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 multiplayer beta. We get into what we like and dislike about the beta version of the multiplayer as well as Call of Duty as a whole. Alex kicks off the podcast with his hazy thoughts on the Great British Beer Festival. To end we get heavy with a discussion, following on from COD, about an interview by Jessica Valenti for The Guardian with Anita Sarkeesian. We chat about the abhorrent nature of hateful comments, people not forming a critical counter argument and how everyone should be nicer on the internet. To drink Ben and Alex have the Westmalle Trappist Bubbel and a large bottle of Meantime IPA whilst Aadil drinks the Garrison Hopyard Pale. Tanked Up – Episode 19 – CoD ‘Black Hops III'
