Joke time! What's long, hard, and full of seamen? You're wrong, it's a submarine! Like the one from this week's movie, IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA. From 1955, this will be our oldest movie yet. The real treat though, is all of the awesome special effects done by the legendary Ray Harryhausen. We talk about him, and loads of other stuff, so check it out!
We're halfway through the 50s and you know what that means... It's time for another bonus battle! We've taken two giant monster movies from 1955 and put them head to head to see which comes out on top. We've got a massive tarantula on the loose in 'Tarantula', but maybe the real monsters were the humans who made it along the way, and we've got an angry octopus in 'It Came From Beneath the Sea', but maybe the real villains in that film are the boring human characters. Welcome back metalheads to another episode of the great metal debate podcast. It's your man Xander again and today the Swedish thrash metal band Mezzrow has finally released their second album titled Summon Thy Demons. This long awaited release on Fireflash Records has much better production quality and it is instantly noticeable during the first song "King of the Infinite Void". Gone are the days of the drumming sounding like someone slapping their hands on a countertop and in with the crisp audio of Jon Skare pounding the skins. It is worth noting that this band has zero original members as they have all come and gone over the years. This fresh line-up seems to truly capture lightning in a bottle. As someone who has never been crazy about the style of thrash metal, I'm glad that this new album seems to be one of the few I personally enjoy. Summon Thy Demons has a real modern Havok and Warbringer-esq vibe about them. They are fast, loud and aggressive while keeping that classic Sodom bravado especially with front man Uffe Pettersson's vocal delivery. Another thing that I like about his style is that I can hear every single word that he says in every song making the entire album one big sing-along. The second song "Through The Eyes of the Ancient Gods" is a thrashing good time with great overall musicianship and catchy lyrics. And then we have the album title track coming in softly with a faded out choir before annihilating your eardrums with the menacing words that feels like venom being spat in your face. The next song on the album "What Is Dead May Never Die" is a real headbanger thanks to guitarists Magnus Soderman and Ronnie Bjornstrum with their amazing riffs. The song is quite an earworm too. I had this song stuck in my head for a while after hearing it for the first time. The beginning of the song "De Mysteriis Inmortui" has an old school 1980s era Metallica sound to the violent heavy metal riff. Personally I refer to this song as "Summon The Dead" because of the gang vocals towards the end chanting these words. I love how before this next song fades in, we hear a sonar beeping from a submarine. It's very fitting since the song is titled "Beneath The Sea of Silence" which has yet another kick ass opening guitar riff. I can only imagine what the future mosh pits for this song would look like. Hopefully Mezzrow can do a U.S. tour with another big thrash metal act sometime next year. The guitar solo in this song makes me want to jump straight into a circle pit. When a song starts up with a nuclear test site siren, you know you're in for a hell of a ride. This is of course, is the song "On Earth As In Hell" which gives off all the negative energy that you'd expect from this song title. I love that bass guitar line in the middle of the track which eventually returns to the main guitar groove. I can always appreciate an acoustic guitar in heavy music especially when it serves as a calm way to ease listers into a very modern Kreator sound guitar riff. That's what I enjoy most about the song "Blackness Fell Upon The World". It's a killer song that only further compliments the already badass album. For some reason when the vocals and bass sections come up, "Dark Spirit Rising" and "The End of Everything" both are packed with enough adrenaline to close out this long awaited thrasher. Despite Mezzrow being a band for over 3 decades, I feel like they have been reborn from the ashes like a fiery Phoenix given their circumstances. I can't find any real flaws with Summon Thy Demons and it is certainly superior to most thrash metal that gets released these days. If you are a thrasher, there is a great chance you'll love these guys. I'm going to give this album a 7 out of 10. Show Notes: Today's episode takes us back to the topic of small groups. If you've listened to some of the more recent episodes of this podcast, you might be asking, “Haven't you guys said enough about small groups already?” In this episode, however, we're going to hit that topic from a slightly different angle as LT Will Parker, USN, and LT Sam Alexander, USN, sit down to talk about their experiences while serving aboard submarines. They discuss the challenges of such a unique environment, the challenges of beginning and maintaining a small group Bible study aboard a submarine, and practical applications for similarly isolated environments. They also get into the importance of seeking out fellowship with others wherever you can, whether that's through an OCF small group, a local church body, or with a few peers at work. If you would like to share your own story, complete the form on OCF's “Be a Guest” webpage. Alternatively, if you have an idea for a guest or topic I should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org. As you listen to this conversation with Will and Sam, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: Will and Sam talk about the unique schedules, or lack thereof, of service aboard a submarine and the challenge such irregularity presents in many aspects of life. How do you make time for investing in relationships with God and with others when you can't control your own schedule? Recall a time when you had an atypical fellowship group. What made those relationships most impactful despite your unique life circumstances? Sam mentions a “grab bag” of pre-structured Bible study resources that helped him lead a small group when he didn't have much time to prepare between gatherings. What resources could you place in your own “grab bag” for future use? How can you use technology as a tool for pouring into others and receiving encouragement even as you're away from in-person fellowship? What practical, realistic goal can you set in your own walk with the Lord? Don't set a goal for the sake of setting a goal and checking something off your to-do list, but let this goal serve as a reminder to factor its objective into your everyday life.

The Mekong Delta is home to 17 million people and is Vietnam's most productive agricultural region. An international group of scientists warn this week that almost all of the low lying delta will have sunk beneath the sea within 80 years without international action. Its disappearance is the result of both sea level rise and developments such as dams and sand mining, as Matt Kondolf of the University of California, Berkeley explains to Roland Pease. Also in the programme: Seismologist Laura Emert on using the rumbling of traffic in Mexico City to monitor earthquake hazards. Mars-shaking Marsquakes – recent record-breaking quakes on Mars explained by seismologist Anna Horleston of Bristol University. A record-breaking high jumping robot designed by mechanical engineer and roboticist Elliot Hawkes which is so light it can access any terrain, perhaps even the moon. And gene editing…. Humans now have the ability to directly change their DNA and gene-editing tool CRISPR has led to a new era in gene-editing. CrowdScience listener ‘Bones' wants to know how gene-editing is currently being used and what might be possible in the future. Gene-editing offers huge opportunities for the prevention and treatment of human diseases, and trials are currently underway in a wide range of diseases like sickle cell anaemia. CrowdScience presenter Caroline Steel finds out about some of the most promising work tackling disease before turning to consider the possibilities of using gene editing for non-medical changes. Will we be able to extend human longevity, swap our eye colour or enhance athletic performance? And even if we can do all these things, should we? As scientists push the boundaries of gene-editing and some people are DIY experimenting on themselves with CRISPR, we discuss the practical and ethical challenges facing this promising but potentially perilous area of science. Deadly storms. An ancient curse. Will her sacrifice save them all? For generations, deadly storms have ravaged Mina's homeland. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curse them with death and despair. To appease him, each year a maiden is thrown into the sea, in the hopes that one day the 'true bride' will be chosen and end the suffering. Many believe Shim Cheong - Mina's brother's beloved - to be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is sacrificed, Mina's brother follows her, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong's stead. Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina finds the Sea God, trapped in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man and a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits, Mina sets out to wake him and bring an end to the storms once and for all. But she doesn't have much time: a human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking.... The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is a magical feminist retelling of a classic Korean legend, perfect for fans of Uprooted and Miyazaki's SpiritedAway.
Rosa Escoda's dreamy narration sweeps listeners up into a captivating retelling of the Korean folktale “The Tale of Shim Cheong.” Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss Axie Oh's new YA fantasy set in the spirit realm. Deadly storms rage along the coast each year, only calming after a sacrifice to the Sea God. When Mina realizes her brother is desperately in love with this year's “Sea God's Bride,” Mina plunges into the sea to save her brother's heart, setting her on a quest to end the storms. Escoda narrates with a British accent, smoothly shifting into Korean. Listeners will love getting lost in this lush, romantic story. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. In this episode we set sail with Neil to visit one of the world's great natural harbours, Scapa Flow in Orkney. This vast harbour is a beautifully bleak, windswept spot drench in drama, tragedy and power. For thousands of years, it played a vital role in maritime travel, trade and conflict. The Vikings anchored in its safe waters in the C11th. The British admiralty enlisted it in the Napoleonic wars. And in the First World War it was home to Britain's Grand Fleet, before being pressed into service once again in the 2nd world war. In the First World War the entire, surrendered German navy was scuttled here in an extraordinary act of sabotage.
