Send us a textStep back in time to the American frontier where five extraordinary women defied expectations and carved their names into history. The vast expanses of the American West weren't just shaped by cowboys and outlaws – they were transformed by women of remarkable courage, talent, and determination. Our journey begins with Annie Oakley, whose unparalleled sharpshooting skills captivated audiences worldwide while she maintained a carefully crafted feminine image that made her revolutionary talents acceptable to Victorian sensibilities. We contrast her approach with Calamity Jane, who boldly rejected feminine norms, embracing masculine attire and behavior to create opportunities in a world that offered women few paths to independence. The notorious Belle Starr emerges as the compelling "Bandit Queen" whose practical buckskins, boots, and armed presence challenged conventional womanhood and captured public imagination through sensationalized stories that both celebrated and simplified her complex reality. We then explore Sacajawea's crucial but undercompensated contributions to westward expansion – her indigenous knowledge of plants, languages, and diplomacy proved essential to the Lewis and Clark expedition's survival, revealing how Native expertise enabled American colonization. Finally, Sarah Winnemucca's powerful advocacy illuminates indigenous resistance through her groundbreaking public speaking career and autobiography that challenged harmful stereotypes while navigating the precarious position of cultural mediator. These women weren't merely passive witnesses to history – they were active architects of the American West, challenging our understanding of frontier life through their exceptional skills, defiance of restrictive norms, and tireless advocacy. Their stories reveal how media and mythology both elevated and constrained them, creating legends that sometimes overshadowed the complex realities of their lives. By examining these five remarkable women beyond the archetypes that often define them, we gain profound insights into female agency, resilience, and the multifaceted nature of fame in a transformative era. The women of the Wild West mostly spent their lives laundering men's clothes, bringing up children, and avoiding getting caught in the crossfire - but that didn't stop a legend forming around them; not least dime novel heroine and ‘Bandit Queen' Belle Starr, who was murdered on 3rd February, 1889. The ‘outlaw' was riding home, two days before her 41st birthday, eating a piece of cornbread, when she was blasted off her horse. And then shot again, in the face. But mystery still surrounds the identity of her killer. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the fallout from the civil war shaped Starr's life; ask whether ostrich plumes, rattlesnake rattles and dried earlobes could come back into fashion; and explain what Tom Starr's gang had in common with Elton John… Further Reading: • ‘Belle Starr the Bandit Queen: How a Southern Girl Became a Legendary Western Outlaw' (Atlas Obscura, 2013): https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/belle-starr-the-bandit-queen • ‘Belle Starr The Badass "Bandit Queen" Of The Wild West' (allthatsinteresting, 2021): https://allthatsinteresting.com/belle-starr ‘Belle Starr's Crazy Life Story & Grave!' The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: https://www.audible.com/pd/Belle-StarrThe-Bandit-Queen-Audiobook/B0DLLM62RB Belle Starr – The Bandit Queen By William Yancey Shackelford Narrated by Lee Ann Howlett Legendary outlaw Belle Starr has been written about and portrayed in various media for well over one hundred years. Born Myra Maybelle Shirley in Missouri in 1848, Belle lived most of her life in Texas. She became notorious after living with and hanging out with members of the James and Younger gangs. Belle was a crack shot who rode side saddle while engaging in horse thievery, castle rustling, and holdups. In between these activities, Belle bore two children and was involved with (though not necessarily married to) several men, including Sam Starr. Belle was murdered in 1889 just 2 days before her 41st birthday. The case is officially considered unsolved. This book was the first of many about Belle and was published the same year she died.

fWotD Episode 2654: Phoolan Devi Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 10 August 2024 is Phoolan Devi.Phoolan Devi (10 August 1963 – 25 July 2001), popularly known as the Bandit Queen, was an Indian dacoit (bandit) who became a politician, serving as a member of parliament until her assassination. She was a woman of the Mallah subcaste who grew up in poverty in a village in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where her family was on the losing side of a land dispute which caused them many problems. After being married off at the age of eleven and being sexually abused by various people, she joined a gang of dacoits. Her gang robbed higher-caste villages and held up trains and vehicles. When she punished her rapists and evaded capture by the authorities, she became a heroine to the Other Backward Classes who saw her as a Robin Hood figure. Phoolan Devi was charged in absentia for the 1981 Behmai massacre, in which twenty Thakur men were executed, allegedly on her command. After this event, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh resigned, and calls to apprehend her were amplified. She surrendered two years later in a carefully negotiated settlement and spent eleven years in Gwalior prison, awaiting trial.Phoolan Devi was released in 1994 after her charges were set aside; she subsequently became a politician and was elected as a member of parliament for the Samajwadi Party in 1996. She lost her seat in 1998 and then regained it the following year; she was the incumbent at the time of her death in 2001. She was assassinated outside her house by Sher Singh Rana, who was convicted for the murder in 2014. At the time of her death, she was still fighting against the reinstituted criminal charges, having lost a 1996 appeal to the Supreme Court to have the charges dropped. Phoolan Devi's worldwide fame grew after the release of the controversial 1994 film Bandit Queen, which told her life story in a way she did not approve of. Her life has also inspired several biographies and her dictated autobiography was entitled I, Phoolan Devi. There are varying accounts of her life because she told differing versions to suit her changing circumstances. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 10 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Phoolan Devi on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Gregory.

In this second episode of Arizona HERstory, we uncover the truth behind the legend of one of the most notorious criminals in Arizona history: Pearl Hart. Dubbed the "Bandit Queen" by local papers, Pearl's history has been bit of mystery and much of that was due to her own fabrication. But Pearl blazed her own path, and the fire of her spirit not only burned those close to her but it also scorched her life as well. But she never apologized for how she made herself. Carthage, Missouri is America's Maple Leaf City, and the site of the first official engagement of the American Civil War, which took place July 5, 1861. Thirteen years earlier, Myra Maybelle Shirley, was born there on Feb. 5, 1848. They called her Belle. In an attempt to raise her to be a lady, the Shirley's sent their daughter to be educated at the Carthage Female Academy. Belle was intelligent but she was also hot tempered and if unchecked, her mouth could turn a mule skinner's face scarlet. As a result, she got into fights with girls and boys alike at the academy. She would carry this attitude throughout her whole life.

On May 30, 1899, history was made when Pearl Hart, disguised as a man, held up a stagecoach in Arizona and robbed the passengers at gunpoint. A manhunt ensued as word of her heist spread, and Pearl Hart went on to become a media sensation and the most notorious female outlaw on the Western frontier. Hailed by many as “The Bandit Queen,” her epic life of crime and legacy as a female trailblazer provide a crucial lens into the lives of the rare women who made their mark in the American West.My guest, New York Times bestselling author and Old West historian John Boessenecker shares incredible stories from the life of Lily Davy (aka Pearl Hart) and her equally fascinating sister Katy Davy. Writer Sudip Sharma (NH10, Udta Punjab, Paatal Lok, Laal Kaptaan) joins us for a Sonchiriya deep dive. Sonchiriya is one of my favorite films of last 10 years. It's also my favorite Sushant Singh Rajput film. I believe his performance, much like the film, remains underrated and under-discovered. This episode is, in part, an attempt to help people discover and appreciate Sonchiriya. Sudip and I talked about key scenes and moments, conducting script research in Bundelkhand, casting Sushant and Bhumi, working with Sushant, the set pieces, and film influences on Sonchiriya. Sudip also shared how Sonchiriya is his tribute to Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen (1994), one of his all-time favorite Hindi films. Join us!Sonchiriya is currently streaming on Zee5. You've heard her name in the same breath as other gun slinging wild west hooligans like Billy the Kid and Jesse James. But who really was Belle Starr? Was she the pistol-packing bloodthirsty Bandit Queen who delighted in breaking the law as her legend dictates, or... was she more a victim of circumstance and the turbulent times she lived? More importantly, who actually killed her that fateful day on February 3 1889? There are so many questions lingering about Myra Maybelle Shirley Reed Starr, and on this week's episode, we attempt to answer them all! Most know who Charles Sobhraj is. But even if he has become something of a legend, Sobhraj was—by many accounts—a thief and murderer after petty gains. And not an international crook engaged in high profile art and diamond heists. Nor an international arms dealer whose shenanigans get the collective underwear of nations in a twist.Or was he?My guest today—the renowned writer, Farrukh Dhondy—spent considerable time with Charles Sobhraj. Farrukh's descriptions of those meetings resulted in his latest book, Hawk and Hyena. The book reveals aspects of Sobhraj's life— that of an opportunist...a wannabe businessman. One of those guys we have all met—a person of indeterminate skill and dodgy provenance, never peddling the same thing twice.Importantly, the book raises a startling and surprising question—did Charles Sobhraj hold the key to a potentially unpalatable truth—that maybe Sadaam Hussein did have weapons of mass destruction after all?In a similar question, did the Government of India seek the assistance of Charles Sobhraj in getting the release of the hostages from the hijacked Air India plane in Kandahar in 1999?Was Charles Sobhraj more than a small-time crook who seduced hippies and liberated them from life and lustrous diamond?Hawk and Hyena by Farrukh Dhondy raises those questions and answers many. This book is his latest offering in a fascinating life of journalism, TV shows, films, plays and books and political activism—he was a marxist member of the British Black Panthers. There's a link to his Wikipedia page below. Here's another book I recommend, Fragments Against My Ruin: A Life—Farrukh Dhondy's memoirs, or autobiography. This book is a riot. From a humility that can only come from someone inherently funny, Farrukh Dhondy turns important incidents into escapades and wit into wackiness. My own introduction to his writing was from columns he wrote—and writes—in various papers. He frequently opened with the line, “As an elder of the community I am often asked..." For many reasons, I found that line delightful. Some years ago, a friend brought Farrukh to my office in an unplanned visit and neither of us can remember why. We had coffee. I was happy for this social surprise. But I had no idea what to say to him if only because I had too much to say to him and I had been blindsided.Happily, that's not the case today. It is both honour and privilege to have Farrukh Dhondy join me from his home in London as my guest.Buy Hawk & Hyena: https://amzn.to/3HRGNuRBuy Fragments Against My Ruin: A Life: https://amzn.to/3HUuk9HABOUT FARRUKH DHONDYFarrukh Dhondy is a British-Indian writer. On July 26, 2001, the headline in the Detroit Free Press read “BANDIT QUEEN'S BLOODY END.” The article underneath paints an almost mythical picture of an Indian politician named Phoolan Devi who has just been shot dead. But this was no ordinary political assassination. Her assailants had come to avenge the murder of some twenty men who Phoolan Devi had executed decades earlier. But why did she kill them? And how did that mass murder earn her the title “the Bandit Queen?” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast Dave and Sam talk about the forgotten history of Belle Starr, an infamous outlaw. Basically everyone has heard of Jesse James. Slightly more obscure is Belle Starr, an outlaw from the same Wild West era, albeit one without the name recognition of James and his gang, with whom she had some ties. In her time she was known as the Bandit Queen and the Petticoat Terror of the Plains. Perhaps most interestingly of all, she was murdered and her murder remains officially unsolved to this day. Her birth name was Myra Maybelle Shirley (her family mostly knew her as “May”) and she hailed from Carthage, Missouri. Although a prosperous farmer in the region, her father was considered the black sheep of his prominent, old-stock Virginia family. In fact, her father had been divorced twice when she came along, scandalous at the time. Starr was the daughter of his third wife, who had family ties to the Hatfields of the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud. And here we go with part two of our Phoolan Devi episode! This week, let's talk about Phoolan Devi after she decides to quit her life of banditry. If you can imagine it, her life only includes MORE adventures afterwards.
We're talking about India's Bandit Queen, Phoolan Devi. She had so much happen to her starting at a young age, she was a child bride, kidnapped, leader of bandits, arrested and put in jail, and eventually elected to hold a seat in the Indian Parliament. And this was all by the time she was around 37 years old.
