Queen Elizabeth I was a formidable leader who defied the norms of her time, cleverly balancing the expectations placed upon her as a woman with her ambitions as a ruler. An Indian director and an Australian lead actor came together to bring us a truly brilliant biographical drama on the ascension to the-then Catholic English throne of the Protestant Elizabeth I, in Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth.Queen Elizabeth I was a powerful female figure in a male-dominated society, and Elizabeth accurately emphasizes her real life ability to navigate political waters with grace and power. Cate Blanchett's performance as the young Elizabeth is not just iconic; it's a masterclass in acting, showcasing her transformation from a naive young woman to a formidable queen. That doesn't mean this movie is particularly historically accurate in other things, though. There was no poisoned dress. It was totally fabricated. ;-)Regardless of accuracy, Elizabeth's legacy gives us a glimpse of what life may have been like for the UK without the Virgin Queen's influence, and its implications for contemporary discussions on gender and power. Elizabeth herself is not just as a historical figure but a symbol of resilience and strength for women everywhere. I would love to hear your thoughts on Elizabeth (1998) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! I won the Best Movie Podcast in the inaugural Ear Worthy Independent Podcast Awards recently. Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) centers on the plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England, the arrest and execution of Mary, Queen of Scots (Elizabeth's cousin), and King Phillip II of Spain's attempt to topple Elizabeth and install a Catholic monarch on the English throne, which culminates in England's defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The film also portrays the complex emotional triangle involving Elizabeth, the English statemen, soldier, and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, and Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting, Beth Throckmorton, whom Raleigh marries and has a child with. (The film depicts Elizabeth as enamored with Raleigh). Directed by Shekhar Kapur, from a script by William Nicholson and Michael Hirst, the film is a sequel to Kapur's Elizabeth (1998). The cast includes Cate Blanchett (Queen Elizabeth I), Clive Owen (Walter Raleigh), Geoffrey Rush (Elizabeth's spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham), Samantha Morton (Mary, Queen of Scots); Abbie Cornish (Beth Throckmorton); and Jordi Mollà (Phillip II of Spain). In addition to dramatizing this critical and memorable period of English history (albeit with some notable historical inaccuracies), the film provides a window into important and timely legal issues around torture, trial for matters of state, and piracy in Tudor England. In this episode, host Satish Kaushik takes us back to the year of 1987 when "Mr. India" took the theaters by storm. It starred the dynamic duo of Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, along with the legendary villain Amrish Puri. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, this movie became a massive hit. Can you believe it was originally written with a different actor in mind? But fate had other plans, and it ended up being Anil Kapoor's breakthrough role, pushing him into stardom. And as for the iconic villain, Amrish Puri's role was initially considered for another actor! To uncover who that was, make sure to tune in to this episode of the Filmy Calendar Show.

Felicity Beckett speaks to director Shekhar Kapur about his new film, What's Love Got To Do With It? For documentary filmmaker Zoe (Lily James), swiping right to find Mr Right has only delivered bad dates and funny anecdotes, much to her opinionated mother Cath's (Emma Thompson) dismay. For her childhood friend and neighbour Kazim (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents' example and opt for an assisted marriage with a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a different approach to finding love. Writer Sudip Sharma (NH10, Udta Punjab, Paatal Lok, Laal Kaptaan) joins us for a Sonchiriya deep dive. Sonchiriya is one of my favorite films of last 10 years. It's also my favorite Sushant Singh Rajput film. I believe his performance, much like the film, remains underrated and under-discovered. This episode is, in part, an attempt to help people discover and appreciate Sonchiriya. Sudip and I talked about key scenes and moments, conducting script research in Bundelkhand, casting Sushant and Bhumi, working with Sushant, the set pieces, and film influences on Sonchiriya. Sudip also shared how Sonchiriya is his tribute to Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen (1994), one of his all-time favorite Hindi films. Join us!Sonchiriya is currently streaming on Zee5. Because Manoj Bajpayee is a tremendous actor in the Hindi cine world. After his constant efforts, never give up attitude, he has made a different identity in Bollywood. Manoj Bajpayee's life & Struggle Manoj Bajpayee was born on 23 April 1969 in a small village called Belwa near Bettiah town in West Champaran, Bihar. His father was a farmer and his mother was a housewife. As the son of a farmer, Bajpayee used to farm during his holidays. He wanted to become an actor since childhood. His father faced many difficulties to collect money for his education. He studied in a “hut school” until the fourth grade, and later did his schooling at Christ King High School, Bettiah. Manoj completed his 12th from Maharani Janaki College, Bettiah. Manoj came to New Delhi at the age of 17 with the dream of becoming an actor. When he came to Delhi, he did not have money for a train ticket. To escape TT, he kept moving from one coach to another all night. After trying a lot, he got admission to Ramjas College in New Delhi. There he took part in drama and street play events more than studies. Bajpayee had heard about the National School of Drama from actors such as Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah. He applied for admission to NSD. At that time very few seats were available in NSD. Even after trying a lot, Manoj could not clear the entrance exam of NSD. He tried three times but was rejected all three times. In the end, getting upset from the rejection, he started thinking of committing suicide. Because there was no other plan for him other than becoming an actor. He then attended director and acting coach Barry John's workshop on the suggestion of actor Raghubir Yadav. Impressed by Manoj Bajpai's acting, John hired him to assist with his teaching and his monthly salary was Rs 1200. For the fourth time, he applied for admission to NSD. This time too he was rejected but he was hired for a teaching position. In 1994, he got a one-minute role in Govind Nihalani's film Drohkaal. In the same year, he got the role of Mann Singh in Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen. But Manoj Bajpayee got real success in 1998 in Ram Gopal Varma's film Satya. In that movie, he played a strong gangster character named Bhiku Mhatre. This movie had changed everything in his life. He received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie. He also received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his performance. Manoj Bajpayee was married to a girl from Delhi, but they got divorced during the struggle. He met actress Shabana Raza, also known as Neha, right after his first film Kareeb in 1998. The couple married in 2006 and have a daughter. Manoj Bajpayee has seen many ups and downs in life, but he never compromised with it. Never held back to make the dream come true seen in childhood. Today Manoj Bajpayee has made a different identity in the Hindi cine world for himself. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, for his contribution to the arts. LISTEN to the FULL episode 3 w/ award-winning writer and political activist, Farrukh Dhondy BELOW! Farrukh Dhondy has lived a fascinating life that continues to be productive and endlessly interesting. In this interview excerpt he reflects upon himself and a handful of other Indian and Indian-origin persons -- VS Naipaul, Shekhar Kapur, AR Rahman -- who have worked at the highest levels of British and Indian arts: film, literature, television. They have been able to win both Oscars and Bollywood awards for films like "Bandit Queen", "Elizabeth", "Mungal Pandey: The Rising". Plus they have award winning work in literature and television in both cultures. This is highly unusual, as it is perhaps unparallelled anywhere that two cultures with such distinct and strong artistic traditions, icons, and languages, have these individuals that can move freely at will between them.Farrukh Dhondy, in fact, was a lynchpin in this development, and shares his insight.

Director/Executive Producer Shekhar Kapur returns to the podcast to discuss the Will finale with host Michael Wood and Creator/Executive Producer Craig Pearce, and to explain why he believes that if Shakespeare were to write a play about his life today, it would be similar to TNT's Will. The trio provide insight into Topcliffe's real-life undoing, how the fundamentalist natures of Robert Southwell and Topcliffe mirror the evil in today's society, the price of genius, and what it took to balance the series' political thriller angle with the personal love story between Will and Alice. Plus, they give background on the incredible cast whose amazing performances brought the series to life.

We review the first two episodes with New York Times best-selling novelist Christopher Moore, whose terrific comic novels include such Shakespearean imaginings as Fool and its sequel The Serpent of Venice. We chat with Chris about the series' first two episodes and marvel at such conceits as authors as rock stars, television by committee, shiny sparkly dancey bits, finding your feet, and our shared feeling that historical accuracy is definitely not, thankfully, a necessity. (When you're done listening here, go over to the Folger Shakespeare Library to hear a conversation with Will's producers and creators, writer Craig Pearce and director Shekhar Kapur, on the Folger's Shakespeare Unlimited podcast.) (Length 22:01)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
Host Michael Wood and Creator/Executive Producer Craig Pearce and Director/Executive Producer Shekhar Kapur provide background and insight into the introduction of Shakespeare's cousin, Robert Southwell and his role in Shakespeare's life, and explain how the printing press became the "social media" of Shakespeare's day. They also reveal that while Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers of all time, he was also one of the greatest thieves!
'Will,' the new series on TNT, tells stories derived from what we often call Shakespeare’s “lost years”—the time before he made a name for himself as a writer. The series takes advantage of that gaping hole in Shakespeare’s biography to weave an intricate and exciting tale of art, strife, death, love, poetry, and violence in Elizabethan England. Executive producer/writer Craig Pearce and executive producer/director Shekhar Kapur tell us about adapting Shakespeare's biography—or lack thereof—into a new television show with a punk rock aesthetic. Pearce and Kapur are interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. Published July 12, 2017. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. This podcast episode, “We'll Tell Tales” was produced by Richard Paul. Garland Scott is the associate producer. It was edited by Gail Kern Paster and Esther Ferington. Esther French is the web producer. Special thanks Martine Resnick, Scott Radloff, Heather Crawford, and Kristin Boos at TNT; Tony Ward, Sharon Bowe, Ruth Waites, Pete Smith, and Alison Atkey at the BBC in London; Melissa Kuypers and Peter Stenshoel at NPR-West in Culver City, California; as well as Shekhar Kapur’s assistant, Rhiannon Allen, and Craig Pearce’s assistant, Angus Wilkinson.
Host Michael Wood and Creator/Executive Producer Craig Pearce and Director/Executive Producer Shekhar Kapur break down the first two episodes of TNT's new series, Will. They discuss the historic conflict between Catholics and Protestants and why it's so critical to Will's story, and the importance of art and theater as the center of public discourse during Shakespeare's time. They also provide greater background detail on rock star playwright Christopher Marlowe, and his significance in the story and in Will's own life. And what does the music of The Clash and The Sex Pistols have to say about William Shakespeare?
The official companion podcast to the TNT original series Will, a new drama about a young William Shakespeare. Join historian Michael Wood each week for an in-depth episode discussion with Craig Pearce (creator and executive producer) and Shekhar Kapur (executive producer and director), as they reveal behind-the-scenes details and parse fact from fiction in Shakespeare's mysterious backstory.
Intuition is often described as your “gut feeling,” but Bruce Lee defined intuition in many different ways--as body feel, the root, the creative tide in us, natural instinct, guidance, and free movement of spirit. “What we are after is the root and not the branches. The root is real knowledge; the branches are surface knowledge. Real knowledge breeds “body feel” and personal expression; surface knowledge breeds mechanical conditioning and imposing limitation and squelches creativity.” “The superior man lets himself be guided.” “Don’t think – feel. Feeling exists here and now when not interrupted and dissected by ideas or concepts. The moment we stop analyzing and let go, we can start really seeing, feeling – as one whole.” A truly awake person is using their mind, body, and heart all at once. “Here is natural instinct and here is control. You are to combine the two in harmony. If you have one to the extreme, you will be very unscientific; if you have another to the extreme, you become a mechanical man and no longer a human being.” “Trust the life-giving force within.” Bruce wrote a letter to his friend Pearl when he was 21 where he discusses this feeling and he writes about all the things he wanted out of life and wanted to do with his life. “I feel I have this great creative and spiritual force within me, that is greater than faith, that is greater than ambition, greater than confidence, greater than determination, greater than vision, it is all these combined. And my brain becomes magnetized with this dominating force which I hold in my hand.” At this young age, Bruce is becoming in touch with this inner energy and recognizing that if he can combine it with his dreams and what his mind wants, he can accomplish anything. “Sharpen the psychic power of seeing in order to act immediately in accordance with what it sees.” Often we can be too analytical about a situation letting our minds decide everything for us. Bruce was able to accomplish so much in his short life because he sharpened this ability to see the truth and then to act immediately in accordance with that. “Freedom lies in understanding yourself from moment to moment. If you look within yourself and know you have done right, what do you have to fear?” Take Action: Listen to your whole body and follow your gut. Journal about it and create an awareness of repeated themes. Try a test of following your gut and see how it works out for you. Does following your gut work out to be the right choice for you? #BruceLeePodcastChallenge We started the Podcast Challenge on Monday, we’re doing it and you should do it too!
