Send us a Text Message.Join the conversation with Christelyn Karazin, a celebrated author whose poignant reflections on her book "Swirling" spark an essential dialogue about the pressures black women face in the realm of relationships and society's expectations. Diving into the heart of the issue, we dissect the backlash she received, which brings to light the concept of communal narcissism and how it perpetuates the control and subjugation of black women. The conversation ventures beyond personal anecdotes, delving into the historical and societal factors that have cultivated these dynamics, and the courage it takes for individuals to stand against collective pressures. The narrative deepens as we confront the stark challenges that come with marriage, single parenthood, and the ugly reality of reproductive coercion. We open up about our own journeys, punctuating the conversation with the real-life implications of the "strong black woman" stereotype and the subsequent neglect of black women's health needs. This chapter peels back layers of expectation and control, revealing how these forces shape the treatment of sons and daughters differently within the black community and how systemic violence against black women and children often goes underreported and unaddressed. As we wrap up this profound exchange, we cast a critical eye on the Black Manosphere and its role in shaping harmful narratives around black women through influential figures who gain followers by perpetuating negativity and control. The episode doesn't shy away from discussing the complexities of interracial relationships, the educational and income disparities within the black community, and the skewed societal norms that black women navigate. Sincere thanks to Christelyn for her invaluable insights and to our listeners for engaging in this vital conversation, reminding us of the importance of community engagement and the collective effort required to bring these critical issues into the spotlight.

A lot of boys and men are stuck in an internet loop, and have fallen prey to the alpha male podcast phenomenon. It's not just white incels. It is time the black community addresses the Black Manosphere, too. Although the Black Manosphere formed out of a notable goal: uplifting black men- it does so at the expense of black women. Moreover, Black men also fail to understand that they are being targeted by marketers and online platforms in order to capitalize, or make money, off of the male gaze. Upon first glance, things within the Manosphere may appear normal, but extremists are hiding out in these places.  Waiting to usher young black men and boys into violent groups. Eric Eddings and Brittany Luse, hosts of the For Colored Nerds podcast, take Virginia on a wild ride through the wildly popular Internet subcultures of the Black Manosphere and its almost-counterpart, Femininity Coaching. They get into why Black men and women might feel drawn to these reactionary gender roles, and why it seems like each group is talking past the other.

Is rejection and trauma the Black Manosphere and Toxic Femininity villain origin story?! In today's episode we're joined by soon-to-be PhD Candidate Anuli Akanegbu to discuss patriarchy, the know-your-place aggression towards Black women online, and what draws people to these spaces on the internet. What's The Word? Patriarchy. This term is used to describe a society that organizes itself around the idea that cis men are superior to and should dominate over... everybody else. This structure imposes the gender binary and influences the way we're socialized. We also discuss the spiritual side of the divine feminine, which looks nothing like what we see on YouTube. What We're Reading. Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman by Michele Wallace. The chapter we discuss asserts that the men in the Black Power movements were relying on Norman Mailer's "The White Negro" and the Moynihan Report to shape what Black manhood and a revolutionary should look like. What in the World?! We speak with Anuli Akanegbu about the outgrowth of the Black Manosphere from Hotep Twitter, the "applesauce" that helps some folks swallow the red pill, Steve Harvey, capitalizing on tearing down Black women, the aesthetics of these spaces, being "high-value" as an afterlife of slavery, the way all of this is tied to capitalism, and what it means to feel welcome in your own body. Check out Anuli's podcast BLK IRL and follow her on Twitter and Instagram! Discussed in this episode: The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love (bell hooks, 2004) Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman (Michele Wallace, 1979) My Brush With The Black Manosphere (Nicole Young, 2022) ZD merch available here and the syllabus for ZD 201 is here! In the midst of this "gender" war in the Black community, there are names and titles tossed back and forth: "Struggle Bandits", "Dusty", "B*tch A$$ N1gga" and so on...well, what if that description is true of you, Black man? In this episode I share some thoughts on what to do when you find out you're not exactly who you thought you were. Criticism can be hard to deal with, but it's a necessary part of growth and development as a man. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dudemakesomethingpodcast/message

This past week the black manosphere influencer, Kevin Samuels had a sit-down interview with the "infamous" Brittany Renner. If you haven't seen it, I'll leave a link to the video in the description. Unsurprisingly, the reviews have been mixed. Some think the interview was well done and respectful, others think Kevin Samuels sold out by not going for the jugular. Some are even upset that the interview took place. I'd like to highlight several reasons why this was a brilliant move by Kevin Samuels from a marketing perspective and I have a special request for the black manosphere at the end so stay tuned. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/developingdad/support

Should Black Christian men consume content by the Black Manosphere? The question is going to become more contentious in the coming months. Why? Because as the manosphere engages black culture, it will inevitably make its way into the church, and pastors and church leaders will be asked to give an opinion. I believe that there will be three camps forming around this question. Camp 1 will say stay away at all cost. Camp 2 will secretly watch while agreeing with Camp 1 and Camp 3, which is the one I'm a part of, which will study the success, extract the truth from the movement, and use it to promote Christ's gospel to a larger audience. I believe that we can consume the content if our powers of discernment are sharpened if we recognize that all image-bearers of God have consciences that teach them right from wrong and if we admit that they are addressing an underserved community, namely the black men. To that end, I'm starting a series where I will review black manosphere content creators and hopefully help Black Christian men successfully navigate the black manosphere. First up, it's Oshay Duke Jackson. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/developingdad/support
