This is episode 120, “Speaking to the Needs of the People.” In this episode, I play an excerpt from an interview with Blake Zeff. He helped in both of Barack Obama's presidential campaigns and is an expert in policy and strategic communications. In the interview, Zeff explains that issues of health care helped the Democrats win the 2020 election, and then the Democrats rarely talked about health care and did almost nothing to address the problems with our healthcare system once elected. Do not miss this episode as Blake Zeff discusses Democrats' failure to address health care.

Sandra Hemme, is the longest known wrongfully convicted woman in the United States. The 2024 Summer Movie Preview rumbles (rambles) on, with Eric and Zeff using Part 2 to look at some July and August releases. Reboots, remakes, retreads, and some returns, the fellas will tell you what's worth your time, and your money. Part 1 is here. And the Youtube playlist is here.
They have returned! Eric and Zeff are back on the internet airwaves with their infamous (Zeff tries to explain) summer tradition of previewing the summer cinematic releases by watching only the trailers. From June to the end of August, they have you (pretty much) covered, with sequels, prequels, comic book films and films from books. And as is the tradition, they're also competing to see who is the most prescient..... Click here for the Youtube playlist of all the trailers
By Adam Turteltaub Jessica Zeff (LinkedIn) loves government audits. I know, it's hard to believe, given the dread they inspire. But, the founder and lead consultant of Simply Compliance makes a very good case in this podcast that audits can be much better than people expect and actually helpful for the compliance program. How is this possible? She argues strongly that, given the inevitability of an eventual audit, compliance teams should prepare for them on an ongoing basis rather than just when the audit notification arrives in the mail. By assessing what data an auditor might need, what gaps they may find, and what concerns they may have, compliance teams can complement their risk assessment process and have a better handle on where they should be focusing their efforts. As importantly, having this information handy can be helpful during the audit. Not only does it reduce last minute rushing to prepare, it enables the team to tell auditors their story in a way that shows the organization is doing the right thing and that compliance is on the ball. When the auditors arrive, she advises being prepared logistically as well. This includes having relevant (and not irrelevant) data ready for the auditors. In addition, she recommends thinking through what they will need -- from space to meals -- and ensuring that the staff they need to interview is available. Listen in to learn more about how a government audit may not just be better than you think but also a positive experience.

The series is a live action adaptation of the ongoing 1997 Japanese manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, who himself served as a major creative consultant for the series. It is produced by Kaji Productions, Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha (who also publish the manga). The series stars an ensemble cast including Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar as the initial five members of the Straw Hat Pirates. The series premiered on August 31, 2023,[1] and received positive reviews from both critics and fans who praised the performances, story, visual effects, and general faithfulness towards the characters and events from the source material.[2][3] The series follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the dangerous oceans, lands, and beyond in search of the "One Piece", a fabled treasure that will make their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, "King of the Pirates". But the Marines are on their ship's tail, and they are not the only crew searching for the One Piece. Armed with skills and an unbreakable friendship, the Straw Hats are ready for the journey and even more ready to fight for their dreams together.[4][5] Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, an enthusiastic prospective pirate both cursed and gifted with powerful rubber-like abilities from accidentally eating a mysterious Devil Fruit.[6] His goal is to travel out of the East Blue with a crew of his own, find the mythical "One Piece" and become the King of the Pirates. Emily Rudd as Nami, an enigmatic thief who hides her past behind an aggressive indifference in search of a map to the Grand Line, where the One Piece is strongly rumored to be located.[6] She's taken it upon herself to navigate and map out the entire world. Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, an accomplished master swordsman and bounty hunter, who uses the art of "Three Swords Style".[6] He aims to become the world's greatest swordsman. Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, who is boisterous, yet noble to a fault, to his friends and allies; Usopp specializes in marksmanship, cunning and invention.[6] He intends to be a brave, famous warrior of the sea, recognized by his infamous pirate father, Yasopp. Taz Skylar as Sanji, an abrasive, woman-loving, yet charming master chef who is a practitioner of martial arts primarily using his legs taught to him by his mentor and head chef Zeff.[6] His purpose is to find the All Blue, a mythical sea that connects the four seas together and provide quality meals to all. Vincent Regan as Monkey D. Garp, a prolific Vice Admiral in the Marines and Luffy's grandfather, who becomes Koby's mentor.[8] Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown,[8] the clown-themed captain of the Buggy Pirates whose Devil Fruit he ate gives him the ability to split his own body into pieces and control them as he sees fit. Drama queens, crybabies, whiners, wet blankets – Highly Sensitive People (HSP) have been labelled all of these things and more, when the truth is, there's a lot of things most people fail to understand about the concept. HSP was originated by Dr. Elaine N. Aron (1996), and it refers to an inherent, biological predisposition some people have to process and perceive information on a much deeper level. If you're an HSP, then you think and feel things with greater intensity, in a way that many others can't understand. Sometimes, HSP are mistaken as empaths. Do you know someone who might be an HSP? Highly Sensitive Person (or HSP for short) is someone who is born with an innate disposition of processing and understanding information on a much deeper level than most. This makes HSPs more perceptive, self-aware, intuitive, and observant because of their deep-thinking and empathetic nature. Recent surveys show that up to 15-20% of the global population are Highly Sensitive People – that's as many as 1 in every 5 people all over the world! Still, even with so many of us experiencing the same thing, Highly Sensitive People remain misunderstood by those around them. So many HSPs don't even realize that they're HSPs because there is so little awareness about the matter. So, we made a list of things HSPs do differently from others to help you understand more about how HSPs think. If you think you're an HSP but still not entirely sure yet, we have a video on signs you're a highly sensitive person: https://youtu.be/zP1Ac8fXBjE Writer: Chloe Avenasa Script Editor: Rida Batool Script Manager: Kelly Soong VO: Amanda Silvera Animator: Karen Fong YouTube Manager: Cindy Cheong Aron, E. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 18, 2023 is: zephyr ZEFF-er noun A zephyr is a breeze blowing from the west. More loosely, a zephyr can be any gentle breeze. // We were relieved when a zephyr blew in just as the heat of the day was peaking, allowing us to remain comfortably on the beach for a little while longer. See the entry > Examples: “As I played [the video game Okami], I'd pause to manually draw a slash, loop, or other shape using a calligraphy-style brush, creating a tornado or a fire. … An ‘O' around a tree's naked branches made it burst with cherry blossoms, a vision of abundance. A curlicue in the air created a zephyr that gently riffled through the sky. The world was my sketchbook, and I wanted to beautify the game's gorgeous woodblock and sumi-e ink art style.” — Nicole Clark, Polygon.com, 8 Feb. 2023 Did you know? To build on a classic lyric by Bob Dylan, you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows—especially if you know that wind is a zephyr. You see, poets have eulogized Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind—and his “swete breeth” (in the words of Geoffrey Chaucer)—for centuries. Zephyrus, the personified west wind, eventually evolved into zephyr, a word for a breeze that is westerly or gentle, or both. Breezy zephyr blew into English with the help of such delightfully windy wordsmiths as William Shakespeare, who used the word in his play Cymbeline: “Thou divine Nature, thou thyself thou blazon'st / In these two princely boys! They are as gentle / As zephyrs blowing below the violet.”

Vulnerability is an important quality often overlooked in the world of tech. Yet being vulnerable and authentic helps you to set realistic expectations, speak with executives on a human level, and connect with your audience. In this episode, Satyen interviews Jepson (Ben) Taylor, Chief AI Strategist at Dataiku. Jepson is a visionary in the advancements of AI, ML, and data science. Prior to joining Dataiku, he served as the Chief AI Evangelist at DataRobot and co-founded the deep learning startup Zeff.ai, which was acquired by DataRobot in 2020. Jepson is a frequent industry speaker and collaborates with the data science community to improve AI and deep learning. Satyen and Jepson discuss the power of failure, the lie of job security, and proving data's worth through storytelling.--------"If nothing is failing, then it's not a very innovative company, not a very innovative culture. So there is a fraction of failure that for a mature organization you should celebrate. But with failure, you have the time urgency. How can we fail faster? I'd rather fail this week than four months from now." – Jepson Taylor--------Time Stamps:*(03:25): The special ingredient for speaking with executives*(11:52): Learning to embrace the expectation of failure and failing fast*(18:13): The two rules of good storytelling: authenticity and knowing your audience*(30:47): Jepson's advice for joining a startup and the lie of job security*(44:08): The importance of celebrating the soul of your user*(50:43): Satyen's Takeaways--------SponsorThis podcast is presented by Alation.Learn more:* Subscribe to the newsletter: https://www.alation.com/podcast/* Alation's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/company/alation/* Satyen's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ssangani/--------LinksFollow Jepson on LinkedInFollow Jepson on Twitter
David “Gonzo” González is an Executive and Data Science professional with well over a decade of experience putting AI and ML into production in mission-critical systems. He co-founded Zeff.ai, acquired in 2020 by DataRobot where he succeeded in bringing a jobs-to-be-done perspective to focus product strategy. He led Zeff.ai as CEO and pioneered transactionally authored training and inference on multi-modal datasets. Gonzo is the primary author of The AI Manifesto for Applied Artificial Intelligence Development and has multiple ML patents. In his free time, he enjoys playing outdoors in the wilds of his adoptive home of Utah with his wife and five children. Gonzo has recently taken a break to pursue a startup combining health and wellness and AI. As a warning, in this episode we touch on sensitive topics like a data centric view of religion and also on plant based medicine. This was an enlightening conversation and I'm grateful for Gonzos candidness and openness. Now on to the interview.

Designer Mark Zeff's life changed in 1982 after boarding a flight bound for New York City from Australia. What was intended as a short trip soon stretched to three weeks, and before he knew it, New York was home. Spending glamorous nights at Studio 1954 and mingling with iconic creatives Andy Warhol and Anna Wintour, it wasn't long until he founded his namesake interior design and architecture firm MARKZEFF, the force behind Magnolia Bakery, Virgin Nashville, and New Orleans' Kimpton Hotel Fontenot. As Zeff says, "Patience always prevails."
People use the expression “Ta-Da!” when they have done or discovered something wonderful. Joel Zeff, a keynote speaker, improvisational actor, and humorist, believes that there is nothing trivial about “Ta-Da!” and celebrating every day moments. In a recent Training Unleashed podcast, Joel told our host Evan Hackel that its use is rooted in the time when kids are little, when everything they do is a celebration. “They celebrate even the most routine events, like eating a cheese sandwich, in a big way,” Joel said. “They take a bite of that sandwich, they like it, and they exclaim, `Ta-Da!' And then the parent joins in the celebration by saying `Ta-Da!' back to them. And whatever activity they are doing, they are then going to do more of it. “But as we grow older,” Joel added, “we don't have enough of those moments of celebration.” The Importance of Enjoying the Journey Evan pointed out to Joel that too often, people fail to enjoy every moment of their life journey. Instead, they think, “When I get that promotion or make that sale, I will be happy.” But both Evan and Joel agreed that it is more motivating to celebrate every day by having moments of joy and elation. The point is to be happy in the process. Making Those Moments Part of Every Day Joel also pointed out the importance of supporting other people at work. When you give everyone you encounter through the day – your colleagues, customers, clients – that extra level of positive excitement and support, you are much more effective, and you encourage them to join you on the journey to success. Joel adds, “You can do this by telling people, `Thank you for listening to me . . . thank you for supporting me . . . thank you for being a customer.' Those words are gifts, and they don't cost you any money or take much time. Those words fuel other people, so they will bring positive support back to you . . . It's all about creating a culture of positivity and support.” Joel's Tip for Members of the Training Unleashed Audience “The best message that I learned from doing improv,” Joel says, “is stay in the game. And that is the message I tell my kids. Improv teaches us that we can't quit. We have to stay in the game and find success.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to rule on the constitutionality of President Biden's student debt relief program, Preet speaks with Blake Zeff, a journalist and former political staffer who has made a film about the student debt crisis. Zeff's film, “Loan Wolves,” traces the origins of the crisis to a little-known provision in a 1998 law. Stay Tuned in Brief is presented by CAFE and the Vox Media Podcast Network.
