With the rise of anti-trans attacks on the federal level, state-level advocacy is becoming even more crucial. This week, Imara talks with leaders working to build safety and belonging for trans people in two very different states. First she's joined by the Executive Director of One Colorado, Nadine Bridges, who unpacks what it means to be a “shield state” under Trump. The two discuss the role of joy in resistance, the complex political landscape of Colorado, and the impact of changes to corporate DEI policies. Imara then takes a look at South Dakota where community health advocate Jack Fonder has been working under harsh political conditions for years. He shares stories of survival, hope, and the power of creating new spaces for in-person community building.Content notice: The second conversation in this episoder contains references to suicidal ideation. Disinformers ultimately want their narratives to filter into trusted sources where they can almost imperceptibly begin to shift public opinion. In this episode, Imara dives into how Christian Nationalists have successfully made The New York Times—arguably the world's most powerful news organization—into an agent of their views. The fact that they have done so is a degree of success beyond what they could have hoped. And the way that anti-trans ideas have embedded themselves at the paper has wide ranging impacts on trans people as well American democracy overall. Join us as we learned how this happened through the voices and stories of former and current New York Times staff.Subscribe to the Anti-Trans Hate Machine: https://translash.org/antitranshatemachine/ Hosted on Acast. Various parts of the right wing disinformation machine effectively work in tandem to elevate junk science and platform people spreading anti-trans hate. In this episode, Imara takes a deep dive into the inner workings of this world by following the rise of Abigail Shrier, a woman who rose quickly from obscurity to become a so-called expert spreading the myth of social contagion. We'll explore how she packaged these concepts in ways that was ready made for Christian Nationalist media, especially Fox News. And how they were accompanied by a mainstream appeal that's had a devastating impact on parents and kids.Subscribe to the Anti-Trans Hate Machine: https://translash.org/antitranshatemachine/ Hosted on Acast. Imara shares a new podcast that TransLash listeners are sure to love: Sounds Gay.In this mixtape of documentaries, host Sarah Esocoff takes you to rap battles, mosh pits, and songwriting sessions. Sounds Gay tells stories of queer people whose lives have been transformed by music. In this episode, Sarah learns about a videotape made by a trans woman in the 90s called Melanie Speaks. In the tape, Melanie offered tips for trans women looking to change their voices. Hundreds of women used the tape, but then it, along with the woman who made it, disappeared. This episode asks: how did Melanie help a generation of trans women find their voices? And who was she? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Disinformation must spread in ways that are imperceptible and seemingly organic. Join us for Episode 3 of Season 2 of the Anti-Trans Hate Machine for a deep dive into the massive influence of the fringe blog 4th Wave Now, where parents who are hostile to their trans kids gather to spread conspiracy theories about the origins of gender identity. It's influenced liberal parents like Jeanne Ogden, who used ideas in the blog to help justify blocking her daughter Cam from receiving the care she needs. Learn how Jeanne and Cam are working to pick up the pieces, after being manipulated by this disinformation. And how, despite the harm, journalists like Jesse Singal grabbed the idea of trans social contagion and ran with it.Subscribe to the Anti-Trans Hate Machine: https://translash.org/antitranshatemachine/ Hosted on Acast. Disinformation campaigns need archetypes to advance their propaganda. In Episode 2 of the Anti-Trans Hate Machine Season 2, we see how Christian Nationalists have teamed up with TERFs, and even Dianic Witches, to find people who are “ex-trans” in a hopeless attempt to show that transgender people aren't real. Join us as we follow Ky Schevers and her journey into the depths of the detransition movement. Every day, attacks on trans kids grow louder, and more anti-trans bills keep moving through state legislatures. How did this happen? In Episode 1 of the Anti-Trans Hate Machine Season 2, we tell you how lessons learned by Christian Nationalists twenty years ago, in the fight to undermine gay rights by preserving conversion therapy, set the stage for today. Join us as we show how the ability to manufacture pseudoscientific theories and push them out in the mainstream across three decades led to today's crisis. Over 300 bills banning books, medical treatment, even access to the bathroom, have been introduced so far. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court seems poised to overturn Roe vs. Wade, allowing states to ban abortion (note: interview was recorded Spring 2022). As extremists crank up the volume on hate — trans people, especially trans women of color, are facing an onslaught of violence. Today's guest, Imara Jones, has been featured on the cover of Time Magazine and POLITICO's 2021 “Recast Power List.” She's the producer of a podcast mini-series called “The Anti-Trans Hate Machine: A Plot Against Equality” and the creator of “TransLash Media”, a cross-platform journalism, personal storytelling, and narrative project, which seeks to shift the culture, create empathy and save trans lives. How do attacks on trans organizing and rights impact related movements for bodily autonomy, reproductive justice, and liberation? On episode 51 of "The Activist Files," our Communications Associate Lexi Webster talks with Imara Jones, award-winning journalist, content creator and thought leader, founder of TransLash Media, and host of the TransLash podcast, and Diamond Stylz, activist, media maker, executive director of Black Trans Women Inc., and host of the Marsha's Plate podcast, about how the work of movements for trans justice can inform social justice organizing on all liberation struggles.Their discussion centers around the ways in which an emboldened post-Trump era extremist movement on the right has set into motion a plan whose long-term goal is the creation and enforcement of a white ethnostate and how such a plot relies on the eradication of minorities deemed deviant, the targeting of reproductive rights, and the elimination of any and all protections afforded to trans individuals and communities across the country. They discuss the need for a broad, intersectional approach by progressives who purport to fight for queer and trans liberation, and the continued urgency to build popular momentum for forward-thinking policies by and for Black trans people. They argue that to combat an organized and well-resourced white supremacist Christofascist, nationalist movement would require that the needs of Black trans communities are not only acknowledged, but prioritized by mainstream LGB institutions and that trans-interest groups engage in deeper dialogue and collaboration to provide guidance toward those ends. They also touch on the importance of mutual aid in this work and how our collective eagerness and ability to meet the material needs of Black trans people can act as a litmus test to assess the health of our society and movements.Resources:Organizations and public figures:House of Tulip, New OrleansThe Transgender District, founded by three black trans women in 2017 as Compton's Transgender Cultural District Tourmaline, Black trans artistQuotes and publications:Biopower, theory of Michel Foucault Necropolitics, theory of Achille MbembeRaquel Willis' speech at the 2020 Brooklyn Liberation eventToni Morrison quote Julian K. Imagine walking through life, knowing who you are, but not feeling like you can live as that person? That was how my guest today, Imara Jones, experienced the first half of her life, before making a series of choices that would allow her to feel safe and supported stepping back into her own life, on her terms. Imara is the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning founder of TransLash Media, a cross-platform journalism, personal storytelling and narrative project, which produces content to shift the current culture of hostility towards transgender people in the US. As part of her work at TransLash, she hosts the WEBBY-nominated, TransLash Podcast with Imara Jones as well as the investigative, limited series, The Anti-Trans Hate Machine. In 2019, she chaired the first-ever UN High-Level Meeting on Gender Diversity and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 2020 as part of its New American Revolution special edition. She's held economic policy posts in the White House and communications positions at Viacom. Imara's work as a host, on-air news analyst, contributor, and writer has been featured everywhere from The Guardian, The Nation, MSNBC, CNBC, and NPR to Mic, and Colorlines, and focuses on the full range of social justice and equity issues. We explore Imara's experiences growing up in a family and culture where revealing and living her truth felt not just uncomfortable, but unsafe, how that experience is universal to so many, and how she made choices that effectively empowered her to reclaim a sense of agency, identity, and purpose. And, we explore the power of representation in media, stories, and everyday life as a vehicle to open minds, conversation, and cultivate understanding, connection and the sense of shared humanity we all long for, especially now.You can find Imara at: Website | Instagram | TransLash PodcastIf you LOVED this episode:You'll also love the conversations we had with Thomas Page McBee.My new book Sparked.Check out our offerings & partners: Squarespace: Squarespace is the all-in-one solution for anyone looking to create a beautiful website.
