We welcome two guests. Dr. Alex Hilert is a Jewish-American anti-zionist activist and organizer with the Richmond Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Virginia Coalition of Human Rights. Dr. Hilert works as a community mental health counselor and professor in Richmond, VA. He is on the steering committee for the Dismantle VIAB and VRS Divest campaigns. Dr. Philip Farah was born and raised in Jerusalem. He is a Palestinian who came to the United States in 1978. He has lived, and worked in several Arab countries. A founding member of the Palestinian Christian Alliance for Peace, Dr. Farah has spoken widely on West Asia justice issues, and his writings have appeared in several publications. Philip has relatives in Gaza who were among the victims of Israel's genocidal war. He recently retired after a 35-year career as a public sector economist. How is Carney's War Bank and the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (OTPP) connected? Through investments in weapons and genocide, as well as the activists and organizations fighting for a Free Palestine.Teacher and organizer with OTPP Divest, James Campbell gives an overview of the movement to get the OTPP to divest from weapons manufacturers.With a collection of success stories, it is clear the campaign resonates with teachers in the Province - with two of the largest unions overwhelmingly voting YES to divestment when given the chance.So where does the resistance come from? Where it usually does - Capital. But also from the CEO of the $300 billion OTPP, Joe Taylor, who has refused calls from the ranks to stop using their name to line the pockets of war profiteers.As it turns out, OTTP CEO Taylor is also a big supporter of the Defence, Security and Resilience Initiative (DSRB), or as second guest Tyler and his fellow activists with Stop the DSRB call it - the War Bank.What is it? Its a project of Carney's to get the G7 nations to sign on to this slush fund for the weapons industry. Its clearly stated purpose is to bypass popular (democratic) demands for social service spending and basic rights, in order to secure an endless supply of 'defence' funding. Its all being sold alongside Carney's Canadian militarism narratives, which has made it easier for him to line up supportive politicians from across the spectrum.This makes the job of activists harder, but not impossible. James and Tyler talk about the tactics they've deployed, and the alliances they are building along the way. There are accessible pressure points to be pushed, tarnishing the reputation of unethical investments being one of them. In this episode we speak with Professor Randi Gill-Sadler about various published and unpublished works of writers and filmmakers Toni Cade Bambara and Gloria Naylor.  Randi Gill-Sadler is a teacher, scholar, and writer. She received her PhdD in English and her graduate certificate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Florida. Her research and teaching interests include 20th century African American and Afro-Caribbean women's literature, U.S. Cultures of Imperialism, and theories of Black diasporic relation and anticolonialism. Her work has been published in Feminist Formations, Small Axe, Radical History Review, and Oxford American magazine. She is currently writing her first book which revisits the Black women's literary renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s  to explore how Black women writers like Paule Marshall, June Jordan, Gloria Naylor, and Toni Cade Bambara reckoned with African Americans' growing conscription into U.S. imperial exploits in their fiction, poetry, and film.  For this discussion Josh talks to Professor Gill-Sadler about how Bambara and Naylor navigated the academy, spaces of cultural production, while maintaining anti-imperialist politics, and putting their skills to work for local movements and causes, while also connecting the local to the international. Following a consistent year of pressure, the Victoria University of Wellington has announced its divestment from all Israeli government bonds and shares. The foundation has previously reported having close to $50,000, which they have divested following major Student sit ins and pushback. Today's chat with Kate Orlofsky is no different. Kate is an ecologist, dog musher, and wilderness enthusiast living in rural Alaska. Kate has participated in almost everything we offer at the School of Sacred Embodiment over the last few years and she shares how her anxiety has decreased, she's been able to release her tendency to control, and now uses her voice to openly express her desires.  We discuss the evolving nature of healing and how Kate is a big believer in the power of movement for processing emotions.
