Surprise! Since next week marks the anniversary of when I started this podcast, I'm dropping this episode a few days early as a thank you for your support & listenership over the years. (Note: I haven't decided how to celebrate the date yet, but I think a good start would be not forgetting it like I usually do, haha.) Season 5 has kicked things off in a wonderfully nostalgic mode so far with several installments I've recorded about films of the '80s & '90s, which I'm hoping casts the same sort of warm, glowy, Gen X memory-filled spell on you that it did on me as I researched & prepped for these episodes. And who better to focus on for a look back at this era than John Cusack whose onscreen alter-ego so many of us grew up alongside? Returning to the podcast to investigate is filmmaker & author Duncan Birmingham, who started revisiting Cusack's films towards the end of '23 & pitched this terrific idea to zero in on the Quintessential Cusack era from SAY ANYTHING...(1989) to HIGH FIDELITY (2000). Citing multiple other films along the way, in this appreciative, analytical look back, we focus on his work in three other tremendous films including THE GRIFTERS, GROSSE POINTE BLANK, & BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. Giving plenty of love to his outstanding collaborators & including stories from our own lives & the way our relationships with these characters & films change with age, this is just the thing to queue up & maybe blast from your boombox in some sort of grand romantic declaration as you head into your weekend.Duncan's Bio: A writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, today's guest Duncan Birmingham was an executive producer and screenwriter for IFC's MARON and also served as a co-executive producer and writer on the Starz series BLUNT TALK. Additionally, Duncan's short films have premiered at festivals like Sundance and AFI, and his screenplay SWINGLES, which Paramount purchased, was also on The Black List. Recently, his lively, irreverent short-story collection THE CULT IN MY GARAGE was published by Maudlin House in 2021, & in '22, he wrapped & released his excellent first feature-length film as a writer-director called WHO INVITED THEM.Originally Posted on Patreon (2/23/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/99081183

A writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, today's guest Duncan Birmingham was an executive producer and screenwriter for IFC's MARON and also served as a co-executive producer and writer on the Starz series BLUNT TALK as well. Additionally, Duncan's short films have premiered at such festivals as Sundance and AFI, and his screenplay SWINGLES, which was bought by Paramount, was also on The Black List. Recently, his lively, irreverent short-story collection THE CULT IN MY GARAGE was published by Maudlin House in 2021, & last year, he wrapped & released his excellent first feature-length film as a writer-director called WHO INVITED THEM. Having joined me in 2022 for one of my favorite conversations devoted to director Hal Ashby in the fifth episode of the third season, he's back for the fifth episode of the fourth to discuss writer-director Noah Baumbach's career over the decades & the films KICKING AND SCREAMING, THE SQUID & THE WHALE, GREENBERG, FRANCES HA, & MARRIAGE STORY. Note: If you hear me blank on things a bit more than usual in this episode, it's because I was battling an unrelenting sinus infection but was determined to power through & have an analytical conversation about outstanding talky indies with Duncan, who was coming off of the tail end of a bad cold himself! 'Tis the season! Nonetheless, it's a very rich discussion for fans of the filmmaker's work wherein we assessed recurring themes, compared the ways in which newer films & characters commented on past ones, & celebrated Baumbach's rich collaborators as well. This week I welcome back Jonathan Ames to the show. Jonathan is one of my favorite writers of all time. He has published several books (The Extra Man, You Were Never Really Here, A Named Named Doll) and is the creator for the TV series Bored to Death and Blunt Talk. His latest novel, The Wheel of Doll is available now through Mulholland Books. It's always a pleasure talking with Jonathan - and this time I even had his dog Fezzik hanging with me in the interview chair. He turned me into a sweater by the end of our conversation. Thanks for listening! Kyler --- Purchase THE WHEEL OF DOLL (Book #2) Purchase A MAN NAMED DOLL (Book #1) --- Bio & Synopsis from Mulholland Books: The Wheel of Doll (Mulholland Books) The eponymous and hapless detective Happy Doll returns with a new philosophy and a new case in this second installment of a series "that's a tightly coiled double helix of offbeat humor and unflinching violence" (New York Times Book Review). Although badly scarred and down to his last kidney after the previous caper, Happy Doll is back in business. When a beguiling young woman turns up at his door, it's Doll's past that comes knocking. Mary DeAngelo is searching for her estranged mother, Ines Candle—a singular and troubled woman Doll once loved. The last he'd seen her she'd been near-death: arms slit like envelopes. Although she survived the episode, she vanished shortly thereafter. Now, years later, Mary claims Ines is alive and has recently made contact—messaging her on Facebook and calling her from a burner phone—only to disappear once again. Although his psychoanalyst would discourage it, Doll takes the case, desperate to see Ines again. But as the investigation deepens, there are questions he can't shake. What's led the flighty Ines to reappear? Is Mary only relaying half the truth? And who is Mary's strange and mysterious husband? In this wholly original follow-up to A Man Named Doll, Happy travels through L.A., Washington, Oregon and back again—a journey that gets wilder and woolier with each turn. An irreverent and inventive mystery, The Wheel of Doll is not to be missed. Jonathan Ames is the author of I Pass Like Night; The Extra Man; What's Not to Love?; My Less Than Secret Life; Wake Up, Sir!; I Love You More Than You Know; The Alcoholic; The Double Life Is Twice as Good, and most recently, You Were Never Really Here (adapted into the acclaimed film starring Joaquin Phoenix). Welcome to the first Episode of GABRIEL's PODCAST!!! As some of yall may know i had a podcast named Blunt Talk but it was audio only and it was clearly not brand friendly lol. In the process of wanting to create a video format for the podcast, i changed the name as well. Its still the same structure of me having open and honest conversations with my friends, followers or by myself but now i get to have the conversations LIVE with yall. I talk about life, mental health, makeup, pop culture, social media, politics and current events. As an openly gay first generation Mexican American who has sparked some crazy online conversations over the years, i feel very confident in stating MY TRUTH and being open to any thoughts or opinions. Whether it be with the voices in my head, my friends or with my followers LIVE, I hope you enjoy my conversations

The world is at a turning point – that's the verdict of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who warned the annual economic forum at Davos that more than Ukraine is at risk in Russia's war. He said Germany, and the European Union, are doing their best to wean themselves off Russian energy and stop feeding the war machine that's devastating Ukraine. But Robert Habeck is warning there's a roadblock to an EU embargo. The German Vice-Chancellor is naming names, telling Christiane that one EU nation is dragging its heels. The Green Party politicians joined her this week soon after the catastrophic mass shooting in Texas. A 2009 shooting in a German high school spurred immediate legislation, and Habeck says that like so many others watching from overseas, he cannot understand America's gun laws. His thoughts on Ukraine, Putin, NATO and Canada are blunt and worth listening to. Also our regular Monday COVID update ... it's not good. Say hello to the new wave -- its already here.
Welcome to the kitchen table, Neighbor Pkarlgh! The ladies in our family get together once a week for "Just Because I Love You Day," and this time John is crashing the hen party. So, we're recording two podcasts at the same time. On the mics: John, Peaches (Amanda), Megan, and Tabby. (You can find the Four Sisters' podcast, Just Because I Love You, by clicking this link: https://open.spotify.com/show/4JRPgFcJV1xmZKO7MXhd1C ) There are twice the number of children usually in the background, so please bear with their happy chatter. On the mics: John, Peaches (Amanda), Megan, and Tabby. First of all, John's feet smell terrible and Megan had to intervene. Next, we read an email from a Pkarlgh who wants to know if we've ever caused bridges to be burned in our own family by being too blunt. JUST KIDDING! First John interrupts with a different email about how awesome our podcast is. Okay, THEN we read the letter asking how we navigate those tricky/sticky subjects when we're interacting with close relationships rather than random internet trolls. Are John and Peaches nicer on the internet or in person? Do we tone down the rhetoric to spare the feelings of our loved ones? Let's talk about how to build a resilient family that agrees about the fundamentals of truth and boldness!
