Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo et Shay Haley sont de retour après 7 ans d’absence et “Nothing” produit par Daft Punk. Avec “No-one Ever Really Dies”, N.E.R.D rassemble pour un album Rihanna, Gucci Mane, Wale, Kendrick Lamar, André 3000… et s’inscrit dans la vague engagée de la pop américaine, qui se découvre une nouvelle conscience politique et sociale. Alors Pharrell, un punk ? N’a-t-il pas plutôt envie d’avoir une opinion, sans aller jusqu’au bout de son engagement ? Les clips montrant des manifestations inspirées du mouvement ”Black Lives Matter” ne virent-elles pas à l’édito mode ? Même si les chroniqueurs de NoFun ne tranchent pas le débat, tous s’accordent à dire que l’intention est là. L’urgence est palpable, tout comme un sentiment de montagnes russes au cours des 11 titres - une concision significative - de pop complexe et non linéaire. Véritable défouloir arty de Chad et Pharrell, cet album dans la veine expérimentale des précédents mélange plein de styles, rassemble les bonnes idées mais déçoit par sa réalisation. Before the Internet changed everything there were two distinct and opposing types of popular music, Indie and mainstream. It was the head versus the heart,  the cool kids versus the pop kids and you had to come down on one side or the other. But the lines have been blurring over the past decade and those sides don't mean much any more. We now live in a world where pop music is so strange and creative that it's found acceptance with rock critics and indie snobs.
