Basé sur la légende de la Bête du Gévaudan qui avait plus d'une 100 de victimes au milieu du XVIIIème. Tourné pendant 6 mois en décor naturel en grande partie dans le Gers et les Hautes-Pyrénées avec un budget maboule pour le cinéma français de l'époque avec 32 millions d'Euros. Produit et distribué par la famille Hadida avec la société Davis Films et Metropolitan avec l'aide de Studio Canal. Réalisé et écrit par Christophe Gans sur le script de Stéphane Cabel. A thick mist blankets the countryside as two riders cut their way through the waterlogged landscape, man and beast alike soaked by a slanted rain as ignorant of mercy as it was of the difference between pleasure and pain, redemption and damnation. There was only the fall. Then, a commotion. A man and woman hunted by a group of men, unaware that their role would soon be reversed from predator to prey. One of the riders dismounts, his boots splashing in the puddles, creating tsunamis in miniature. Time slows. The men turn their weapons on the intruder, irritated at the interruption of their sport, but to no avail. Even unarmed, the masked interloper makes quick work of his opponents, moving faster than his opponents can react, disarming and leaving them to wallow in their misery in the mud, and the dirt, and the rain. Always and still, there was the rain. The year is 2001. The movie is Brotherhood of the Wolf. The result is a cult classic in the making. Based - very loosely as is usually the case - on actual events, the movie tells the story of two unlikely friends sent to solve the mystery of reports of a vicious beast that is terrorizing the French countryside. For sheer value, one can hardly do better, as Brotherhood of the Wolf is really (at least) five movies in one: an historical epic, a romance, a detective story, a political drama, and an action movie. A story that involves secret cults, bone swords, brothels, royal politics, evil deformed appendages, and taxidermy, Brotherhood of the Wolf is a very specific sort of fever dream that could only have sprung forth from the collective consciousness of the early 2000s. A 'beast' that pounced on humans and animals with terrible ferocity. Indeed they beast became so notorious that the King of France dispatched envoys to find out what was happening and to kill the creature. By the end, the Beast of Gevaudan had killed over 100 people.To this day, no one is entirely sure what it was, a wolf? a hyena? or something supernatural? The Beast is a popular myth in France, albeit one rooted firmly in reality; somewhat surprisingly it is little known to the outside world, and perhaps incredibly it has never been made into a movie. Until now. Based on the true story of the Beast of the Gevaudan that terrorized France in the eighteenth century, the movie aims to tell first and explain afterwards. In the first part, a special envoy of the King of France, altogether biologist, explorer and philosopher, arrives in the Gevaudan region, in the mountainous central part of France. The Beast has been attacking women and children for months and nobody has been able to harm it or even take a good look at it. En 2001 sortait un cas des plus singuliers. Le pacte des loups s'essayait à la fois à renouer avec une tradition du film d'aventures à la française, tel qu'il s'en était produit entre les années 50 et 70, tout en y incorporant les codes d'une contre-culture, des mangas au jeu vidéo qui s'était imposée ensuite. Toute la cinéphilie de Christophe Gans, à la fois spectateur aussi érudit que boulimique et gardien du temple d'un cinéma populaire, de Bruce Lee aux giallos en passant par les films d'épouvante, mais longtemps méprisé par l'intelligentsia critique, nourrissait un projet hors norme. Surtout dans ce début d'années 2000 ou la production française stérilisée par le formatage des chaînes de télévision, devenues ses principaux financiers, pensait le cinéma de genre sous l'égide d'une économie au rabais, de série B. Le pacte des loups faisait office d'inattendu prototype en voulant renouer avec le réservoir à histoire d'un folklore local, en partant de la légende de La bête du Gévaudan tout en l'adaptant à la mondialisation culturelle geek en cours.Tout partait donc d'un fait divers du XVIIIe siècle; Mué en légende urbaine autour d'un monstre fantasmé par les populaces pour arriver à un film monstre. Par sa production d'abord, gonflée par un Canal + en plein rêve hollywoodien. La chaîne qui venait de racheter le studio Universal voulait rouler des mécaniques, montrer qu'on pouvait rivaliser avec les blockbusters made in Usa. Par son tournage ensuite, parsemé d'embûches, qui débordera sur plus de cinq mois au lieu des trois initialement prévus. Il y avait tout pour arriver à une catastrophe, écrire une autre légende, celle d'un cinéma français boursouflé par la folie des grandeurs. Ce ne sera pas le cas, Le pacte des loups sera un des gros succès de l'année et bâtira une autre réputation pour le cinéma français à l'étranger que les productions Besson.Il reste pour autant une énigme autour de ce film quand il ne s'est rien passé ensuite. Ou presque. Quand cet exemple d'une possible réinvention d'un cinéma de genre à grand spectacle français, n'a pas été suivi de sa réindustrialisation. La signature de ce pacte là n'aura pas été renouvelé par l'industrie, préférant revenir à un modèle économique plus cheap, moins audacieux. Aujourd'hui, Le pacte des loups ressort, dans une version restaurée. Au-delà de sa beauté plastique, c'est l'avance sur son temps qui en ressort. Evidemment en vingt ans, certains effets spéciaux ont un peu vieilli, mais l'anticipation de fusions culturelles saute aux yeux, Le pacte des loups parlant sans soucis aux ados gamers d'aujourd'hui qu'à ceux accros au cinéma sud-coréen et ses virages narratifs. L'impression d'avoir trouvé la bonne formule pour renouer avec un divertissement populaire haut de gamme est d'autant plus vibrante dans une époque où justement le cinéma français en a besoin pour venir à bout d'une crise des entrées. La chose n'est peut-être pas perdue, si Gans a toujours du mal à monter ces projets, il n'a rien réalisé depuis 2014, et sa relecture tout aussi pop de La belle et la bête est attendue pour l'année prochaine,Toutefois, le passif du réalisateur, notamment l'an dernier un Eiffel incapable de sortir d'un poussiéreux académisme ou l'apparition d'une affiche pour célébrer la fin de tournage vantant avant tout les moyens financiers mis sur le retour de D'Artagnan et Milady, laissant penser à un argument de vente forcée, ne sont pas rassurants. On verra bien, à sa sortie en 2023, si cette superproduction a tiré les leçons du Pacte des loups.
