Here is my holiday episode! This year has been tough for a lot of people and the divisive climate we are in as we head into 2025 isn't going to improve right away. A lot of people I am talking to are feeling less than festive these days and are experiencing a lot of dread and anxiety. So, to try to have a happy holiday and new year I have brought in a professional to help us. Peter Bolland is an author and professor of philosophy and humanities at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California where he has taught world religions, Asian philosophy, world mythology, and ethics for 34 years. I wanted to find out what the world spiritual traditions have to say about peace on earth and good will toward men- especially when we are not feeling it. Peter shares his views on ways to handle uncomfortable feelings as well as uncomfortable conversations. This isn't a “political” episode although we do talk about the current climate we are in. The idea is to try to move forward in times of great division and find ways to access common ground. That is my intent, and I hope it is accepted in that way. For a long time, I dodged the “big questions” in life—not because I wasn't curious, but because I didn't know how to approach them. As the years went by, I found myself more intrigued by the questions themselves—not to find definitive answers, but to explore what it means to even ask them. In this episode, I'm joined by Peter Boland, a seasoned expert in philosophy, spirituality, and mythology. Together, we dive into thought-provoking topics like embracing your passions, breaking free from the pressure to monetize everything you do, and much more. Recorded live at Brussels festival Listen, the veteran talks about leading the birth of acid techno and the sound of proto-techno in Belgium. At the turn of the '90s, Belgium was under the twin influences of early techno and '80s new beat. It was artists like CJ Bolland who helped usher these two sounds together, bridging the low-slung sludge of bands like A Split Second and Lords of Acid with the futuristic chug of Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills and Detroit's first guard. Bolland grew up in Antwerp and was exposed to underground music from his parents, who owned a club. Eventually beginning to produce himself, he helped create the early acid rave sound that would take over Europe. He signed to then-powerhouse label R&S Records with his career-defining single, "Horsepower," in 1991, and from there embarked on a prolific touring career. In this Exchange, he talks to RA's senior producer Chloe Lula live from Listen Festival in Brussels, diving deep into Belgium's unique musical landscape and his thoughts on how it's evolved in response to its position between major techno hubs like The Netherlands and France. A massive gear head, Bolland also shares his favourite tools and reflects on how the state of music-making has changed in the years since he first started his career. Listen to the episode in full.

Embark on an extraordinary journey with Mike Bolland, a congenital amputee who defies the odds and transcends barriers with his remarkable resilience and ingenuity. Born without a right hand in Montclair, New Jersey, Mike's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and creativity. From his early years in beautiful Hazlet, NJ, where he attended Beers Street School, to his family's relocation to Arizona at the age of eight, Mike's life took unexpected turns that would shape his remarkable trajectory. It was in Arizona where Mike's journey into the spotlight began when he landed the role of Danny in the movie "The Trial of Billy Jack." While initially drawn to the glitz and glamour of the movie industry, Mike quickly realized that his casting was not due to his acting talents, but rather his unique physical condition.Undeterred by the challenges he faced, Mike's resilience only grew stronger with time. At the age of 13, he embarked on a bowling journey that would change his life forever. Introduced to the sport by a friend, Mike quickly discovered a natural talent for bowling. By the age of 16, he clinched his first state bowling title, propelling him onto the national stage and earning him a coveted spot in the Coca-Cola Nationals in Washington, D.C. This opportunity marked Mike's first real taste of independence and success away from home.Watch full episode on YouTubeListen to Mike's podcast: We're Not StumpedSupport the LYM Podcast:Subscribe to our YouTube channelLeave us a review on Apple Podcasts or SpotifyVisit our website Join our mailing listSend a gift to our host VinceWant to sponsor episodes of LYM? Air New Zealand domestic airfares are at an all-time high. Stats NZ data shows the airline's domestic flight prices have gone up by 7% last month compared to January. The Airport Association is pushing for a policy to monitor the domestic monopoly as they dictate price, routes, and flight schedules. Matthew Bolland, Air NZ's Corporate Affairs Officer, told Mike Hosking that the increase is comparing apples with pears. In January people were flying for the holidays, while February people were flying for business purposes, he said. Bolland told Hosking that if you want a better comparison, you'd look at the average ticket price compared to the year before, which only had a 2% increase. One of Air New Zealand's higher-ups is in favour of establishing more transparency around airfares. The Airports Association is urging the Government to take action and set an independent monitoring system up. Air NZ's Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Mat Bolland, says it'll be good to examine the extra costs that contribute to increased airfares. "We know customers are really feeling the pinch right now, and it does feel expensive to fly. I think our challenge is- if we're going to look into it, let's do it properly. Let's get right into what's behind the airfares." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Hero's Journey is a fantastic archetypical story that shows up throughout life, but has been portrayed in stories from books to movie screens for as long as we can see. But don't forget that you're living a hero's journey. Just because most people wouldn't pay to see whether or not you decide to answer the life changing call to take a new job or to start a new relationship, doesn't mean they aren't pivotal points to the person living the life. So today, Peter Bolland is joining me again to share his insights in the Hero's Journey. We walk through the 3 main stages and overlay ancient stories, pop culture and our own personal experiences to show how you could utilize this as a tool. This subject spurred a lot of side tangents, which allowed us to work around the idea of trickster energy, reincarnation and what role you may play in someone else's Hero's Journey.

Special Guest Speaker Peter Bolland talks about the first teachings of Buddha and Jesus and how they are similar and remain relevant to humanity.
I'm drawn to older spiritual texts like the Tao, the Bhagavad Gita & the Upanishads, but find myself confused by the metaphors or how they relate to me. This frustration took me on the path to find a guide. Peter is a Spiritual & Humanities professor and Southwestern College, who during Covid started a YouTube channel to continue his work. In todays conversation, Peter is helping us understand the more personal messages that these texts hold for the reader and how those meanings can change as we change. Through the conversation, we start to look at the symbology of our generations epic stories like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Roll Playing Video Games etc. and how these stories & story telling modalities may become our generations spiritually allegorical offerings. This is a beautifully deep talk melding music, surfing, spirituality & life. ~Obeisance~ Connect with Peter Bolland Website I PeterBolland.com YouTube I @PeterBolland Spotify Music I Peter Bolland Spotify Music I The Coyote Problem Connect with Adam Riehl Website I AdamRiehlHealing.com Facebook I facebook.com/adamriehlhealing Instagram I @adamriehlhealing Youtube I youtube.com/user/adamriehl/videos Email I adamriehl1@gmail.com Another Podcast by Adam Riehl I Zen and Not Zen Adam Yoga & Sound Baths I beoneyogastudio.com I blissyogastudios.org Subscribe and Share Anchor Breaker Google Podcasts Apple Podcasts Pocket Casts RadioPublic Spotify --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adam-riehl7/support
How do we get a handle on complex systems thinking? What are the implications of this science for philosophy, and where does philosophical tradition foreshadow findings from the scientific frontier?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. In this episode we speak with Carlos Gershenson (UNAM website, Google Scholar, Wikipedia, Twitter), SFI Sabbatical Visitor and professor of computer science at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where he leads the Self-organizing Systems Lab, among many other titles you can find in our show notes. For the next hour, we'll discuss his decades of research and writing on a vast array of core complex systems concepts and their intersections with both Western and Eastern philosophical traditions — a first for this podcast. If you value our research and communication efforts, please subscribe, rate and review us at Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and consider making a donation — or finding other ways to engage with us — at santafe.edu/engage.For HD virtual backgrounds of the SFI campus to use on video calls and a chance to win a signed copy of one of our books from the SFI Press, please help us improve our scicomm by completing a survey linked in the show notes.Or just a copy of the recently resurfaced SFI Press Archival Volume Complexity, Entropy, and The Physics of Information. There's still time to apply for the Complexity GAINS UK program for PhD students – apps close March 15th.Or come work for us! We are on the lookout for a new Digital Media Specialist, an Applied Complexity Fellow in Sustainability, a Research Assistant in Emergent Political Economies, and a Payroll, Accounts Payable & Receivable Specialist. You can also join our Facebook discussion group to meet like minds and talk about each episode.Podcast theme music by Mitch Mignano.Follow us on social media:Twitter • YouTube • Facebook • Instagram • LinkedInMentioned & Related Links:Carlos publishes the Complexity Digest Newsletter. His SFI Seminars to date:A Brief History of BalanceEmergence, (Self)Organization, and ComplexityCriticality: A Balance Between Robustness and AdaptabilityFestina lente (the slower-is-faster effect)Antifragility: Dynamical BalanceW. If you are listening to this on Labor Day, Happy Labor Day. If it is any other day, we hope you had a great Labor Day long weekend. If you have listened to any of our previous episodes, you'll know that Dr. Bolland and I always do a good bit of chattering and talking as we are introducing our guests. Fun fact--our offices are less than 15 feet apart--but we are always chattering--via text, email, DM'ing, you name it. So, this episode is going to be one of those episodes, but it's short! We ask our guests to go through what we call Rapid Fire questions--short, easy, fun questions and today, we bring that to you, but in a way that allows you to figure out what you may have missed from previous episodes. This podcast started as as "No Stupid Questions" and it started when we were in the heart of COVID lockdown--everyone was working from home and no interacting was going on at all. So, many of our first episodes are really talking to researchers and scholars about their research and about how they were managing and navigating all of the challenges thrown their way. In season 2, we shift to what is now "Revise and Resubmit," and we continue the conversations with C&IS faculty, but we focus more on research and less on navigation because things were starting to open up, at least a little. Seasons 3 and 4 bring you conversations with former Ph.D. alum who tell us all about what they have been doing since they left UA. In some cases, it's been very recent and in other cases, it has been decades. But, hearing about the work they are doing now is so fun! And this season--Season 5--we are back at it with conversations with our own faculty in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. Tune in and hear what you may have missed from our four previous seasons and you'll even get a little teaser on what's to come! To follow us on Twitter: @ICIRAlabama
