Earlier this week, educator Lynne Azarchi mentioned that reading aloud to kids and discussing the book afterwards helps to build empathy in kids. It also builds empathy in adults! In this episode, I discuss the power of reading and recommend some favorite books that help build empathy. The study I mention in the article is discussed here: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/novel-finding-reading-literary-fiction-improves-empathy/ The books recommended in this episode are: Grendel by John Gardner, https://www.amazon.com/Grendel-John-Gardner/dp/0679723110/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1VK04CE3FXOXZ&dchild=1&keywords=grendel+john+gardner&qid=1611227203&sprefix=grendel%2Caps%2C167&sr=8-1 Jazz by Toni Morrison, https://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Toni-Morrison/dp/1400076218/ref=sr_1_1?crid=6QR145U8QNND&dchild=1&keywords=jazz+toni+morrison&qid=1611227236&sprefix=jazz+toni+%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1 The Life of Pi by Yann Martel, https://www.amazon.com/Life-Pi-Yann-Martel/dp/0156027321/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=life+of+pi&qid=1611226957&sr=8-2 The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak, https://www.amazon.com/Book-Thief-Markus-Zusak/dp/0375842209/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=book+thief&qid=1611227341&sr=8-1 A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, https://www.amazon.com/Little-Life-Hanya-Yanagihara/dp/0804172706/ref=sr_1_1?crid=18QTYHNLME15N&dchild=1&keywords=a+little+life&qid=1611227307&sprefix=a+little%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-1 Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, https://www.amazon.com/Canto-Harper-Perennial-Modern-Classics/dp/0061565318/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=bel+canto&qid=1611227383&sr=8-1 A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, https://www.amazon.com/A-Gentleman-in-Moscow/dp/0143110438/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3YMO2Q3DTPK8&dchild=1&keywords=gentleman+in+moscow&qid=1611227423&sprefix=gentleman%2Caps%2C157&sr=8-1 The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, https://www.amazon.com/Poet-X-Elizabeth-Acevedo/dp/0062662813/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=poet+x&qid=1611227451&sr=8-1 Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, https://www.amazon.com/Long-Way-Down-Jason-Reynolds/dp/1481438263/ref=sr_1_1?crid=Y4VD72V8SLBR&dchild=1&keywords=long+way+down&qid=1611227491&sprefix=long+way%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-1

This week my guest is Karalynn Thomson, founder of The Animal Agency, the UAE's only professional animal agency providing models and actors of every colour, shape and size to the region's growing media and advertising industry.Karalynn also runs the fantastic initiative Reading Dogs UAE, which encourages school children to become confident readers by reading aloud to pet dogs. Research shows that reading with dogs improves children's reading fluency by up to 30 per cent. It also offers them a whole host of social and emotional benefits too.Obviously I was very keen to talk to Karalynn more about this and she was extremely generous with her time, especially given that she's just moved house, and has new baby - a gorgeous four month old daughter, who made a guest appearance half way through our chat.We had a wonderful conversation about animals and pets, what they can can teach us, and as an added bonus, I got to meet Minnie the Great Dane. What a great day. Today's episode features Brig Lamoreaux, a Sr. Advanced Analytics and AI Solution Architect at Microsoft, and Brig's been with the company for about 4 years. Brig has roughly 20 years of software development and engineering experience. Before Microsoft Brig worked for Apollo Education Group for 10 years, where he spent his time building research and software behind adaptive learning and modeling student knowledge. Some of the systems Brig has been involved in developing and productizing feature novel advances in education including cognitive science theories and data driven personalization. Brig has also spent a lot of time directing, programming, and leading 12-week learning boot-camps where students build hands-on skills using real world examples and projects. Brig finds a lot of value in learning and teaching, and you'll learn more from is lessons around how people learn throughout the discussion.Themes of the discussion:-How to measure depth of knowledge, and the feedback loop of learning:—Teaching basic concepts—Developing examples that enforce these concepts (which involve different teaching methods)—Providing measurement tools for what was learned (tests and interviews: "tell me about Java")-Machine learning in its most basic form, the data science pipeline, and a real world AI project he's using to teach his children how to solve problems with technology-How to run a successful machine learning project:—Can you initially draw some correlations from a variable, and it's potential outcome?—Is there a human practitioner in the world that can make a probable estimate of the outcome you are trying to achieve? Ie, are there "hunches" that you can measure your hypothesis against?—What specific data sets are these practitioners using? This is critical data-People and teams, that are NOT successful with machine learning projects. They discuss input masking which allows the user who might be a client or customer to input data such as phone numbers and emails in a way that is readable to the user while still allowing the browser to read the information on the website or when filling out an online form. Chris and Divya touch on some basic questions the engineer might come across in creating these fields. These include: where the users cursor is, pasting issues, time zones, autosizing text areas. They go into detail on filling out forms and the options of having multiple end-points one end point, and ways to help the customer or client fill out data smoothly and correctly. They discuss a little about using a progress bar to help users to see how far along they are in the process. They discuss the option of help-text which helps users to quick reference what something might be when filling out a less familiar form. They discuss briefly the usage of max-limit or max-length; AB Testing. Ultimately in this episode, Chris and Divya help those software engineers who are wanting a basic understanding of what questions they might come across to make a client or customers process on the form or site as smooth as possible through input masking and more. It was in the spring of 2017 that Seeking Tumnus foolishly decided to read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Following up on their hit episode about Endings and Third Acts, the Third Person crew returns to discuss Beginnings and First Acts to ring in the new year. Turns out how you start a story is pretty important, and discussions include what distinguishes a first act from a prologue, the flow of reaction to action as a story progresses, and other splendidly relevant topics! If you want to get in touch with us, check us out on Twitter or send us an e-mail at ThirdPersonShow@gmail.com. This Episode: The Book Thief, Part 4-6The adventurous trio continue their way through the Book Thief as Bryan leads them across several tangents, whose meaning even he isn't sure of. Stephen and Abigail do their best to provide some sense to the discussion, however, and interesting points are made all around. How is Death progressing as a narrator? What's the value of Max and Liesel's relationship? Does Rudy really need to exist at all? These are just some of the questions we mostly answer. Or at least bring up.If you want to get in touch with us, check us out on Twitter or send us an e-mail at ThirdPersonShow@gmail.com. After a long bout of way too much careful consideration about this episode's name, the Third Person crew decided on "Endings and Third Acts", primarily because they were going to be talking about Endings and Third Acts. They stuck admirably to this game plan, as they picked apart what endings really need to do, how many stories fall short in this, and explore some specific examples. (Warning: There is way too much critical discussion of Frozen, despite Bryan's best efforts to avoid it. HE LIKES FROZEN, OKAY?!)If you want to get in touch with us, check us out on Twitter or send us an e-mail at ThirdPersonShow@gmail.com. This Episode: The Book Thief, Part 1-3Stephen, Bryan and Abigial try out this whole "having a recorded conversation about books thing" as they run down The Book Thief's cast of characters, discussing the role of a narrator, purple prose, character archetypes and where this story might be going in the pages to come.If you want to get in touch with us, check us out on Twitter or send us an e-mail at ThirdPersonShow@gmail.com. View fullsize Bryan, Stephen, and Abigail kick off their first episode with a great question! Why do they like books and storytelling to begin with? Probably something worth knowing if they're going to keep talking about it every week. The conversation flows easily from there as the trio share their mutual musings about their long-held love of fiction, why it's such an integral facet of humanity, and whether Bryan actually knows what he's doing hosting this show.If you want to get in touch with us, check us out on Twitter or send us an e-mail at ThirdPersonShow@gmail.com.
