My guest for this episode is New York Times bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson, who is firing up a new Kickstarter (see URL below) today to reissue his outstanding Terra Incognita trilogy in special hardcover and bespoke editions. What does this have to do with my record collection? All three of Kevin's novels in the trilogy have a companion album of original progressive rock songs performed by an all-star cast, helping to bring the story to life. The "band" name is Roswell Six, and only two of the albums came out while the books were being released. The third album has finally been completed and may be the best of the bunch. In this first part of my interview with Kevin, he discusses how he became a fan of progressive and what we now call classic rock, the Terra Incognita kickstarter, how he brought his novel/album idea to fruition, why the third album wasn't originally made, how that eventually became a reality, and more. Part 2 will drop next week, in which Kevin discusses his love of Rush, collaborating with Neil Peart on the Clockwork Angels steampunk novels, his love for the Clockwork Angels album, and more. In this episode, Mark interviews Kevin J. Anderson about his writing and the new approach he is taking to incorporate Kickstarter into the launch strategies for some of his indie-published titles. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a personal update, comments from recent episodes, and a word from this episode's sponsor. Learn more about this self-publishing/WIDE-publishing focused cruise.   In their interview Mark and Kevin talk about: How Kickstarter has completely upended (in a good way), Kevin's book release strategies Kevin's first novel coming out in 1988 and all the various publishers he has worked with over the years The "Perfect Storm" that was brewing in the book industry when indie publishing became a realistic and viable option Starting to publish his own books (mostly backlist titles he got the rights back to) in 2009 after founding WordFire Press with his wife Rebecca Moesta Kevin's belief that this is the best time to be a writer How Kevin does a little bit of everything. He has a New York literary agent, he works with several major publishers, he indie publishes, and he continues to explore new opportunities that digital publishing offer The way that Kickstarter didn't just open a new door, it completely blew it down, along with a few walls too Dean Wesley Smith's perspective that helped to change Kevin's mind about what Kickstarter was all about Kevin's "Adams Family meets The Naked Gun" series of Dan Shamble Zombie PI novels, and the history of how it started off as a series with a major publisher, flopped, then Kevin got the rights back and did something truly stunning with it once he applied Kickstarter Kevin's first Dan Shamble Kickstarter which brought in 23 times the intial amount he was asking for, and that it paid him more than 6 times the advance he'd rec'd from a major publisher for the last Dan Shamble book he'd done with them The Dragon Business (The Princess Bride meets Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) Kickstarter that brought in 20 times what he'd been asking for The Persephone Kickstarter that Kevin did with Writer/Director Jeffrey Morris Kevin's latest Kickstarter which is a 7 Volume Set of over 130 of his published short stories published over 50 years Writing his first short story when he was 8 years old Publishing his very first short story when he was 14 The personal introductions that he wrote for every one of the stories in this 7 book collection The various levels and Kickstarter rewards he is planning for this Kickstarter The remarkable fact that, despite having published 180 novels with 58 of them being international bestsellers, no publisher would ever even consider publishing a 7 volume hardcover set of Kevin's complete short stories. That he can do this via Kickstarter is a significant paradigm shift How Kickstarter can replace the old "advance" model from traditional publishing The special thing Kevin is doing for all the backers of this latest Kickstarter The Kickstarter will be going live on April 30th for 3 weeks and 2 days And more . . .   After the interview Mark reflects on Kevin's use of short, effective and very clear log lines to describe two of his series.   Links of Interest: Kevin J. We discuss different interpretations of specific lyrics, share personal anecdotes, and scrutinize the song's portrayal of love and relationship dynamics. The discussion touches on the nuances of unconditional love, the reversal of traditional gender roles in the song's narrative, and how love is correctly portrayed as work rather than a fantasy in "Cold Fire." We also reveal our favorite lyrics, reflecting on the poetic symbolism and the emotion conveyed through the song's imagery. We mix in humor, disagreements over lyric interpretations, and reflections on personal relationship experiences, all framed within a deeper appreciation for Rush's music. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everyrushsong/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everyrushsong/support

In an entirely excellent episode, Chaz n Schatz take in their first bonafide Case 2113 in having renowned Sci-Fi and Steampunk author Kevin J. Anderson wind up in the Containment Unit. With over 180 books published, 50 of which being US and International Bestsellers, and upwards of 23 million books in print, he also happens to be a certifiable Rushian. His Rushian credentials date back more than 30 years in the form of his mutual fandom and appreciation club co-conspirator Neil Peart, with whom Kevin had an endearing friendship and creative partnership, from the first night Neil crashed on his couch in 1989, to their collaboration on the Clockwork Angels album and novelization, up through and until the time of Neil's untimely passing in January 2020. In what is surely a conversation Kevin could never have had with his good friend, he discusses his fanboy journey with Rush, from being a farm boy with a penchant for annoying music and pictures of Cannuks in Kimonos on his bedroom wall to the personal letters from Neil describing in "Peartian detail" the wilds of Africa. Kevin's love and friendship for Neil are genuine and heartfelt. He shares freely with the Rush community the recollections of his friend, sharing stories closer to his heart: - The first correspondence of kindred spirits (and other-nerdly connections) - The time Neil had to play Red Rocks Amphitheater in Kevin's Father-in-law's trousers - The publisher that refused to believe Kevin knew "the drummer of Rush", and how Neil helped Kevin prove he did - The journey from farmboy-fanboy to the guy who could tell the greatest drummer in the world not to "harsh his mellow" with his drumming self-critique after an excellent Rush show Kevin's gush of love for all things Rush extends to his appreciation for excellent tribute bands that maintain the band's high standard of performance, having been to both the Bubba Bashes, and traveling to see some of the nation's premiere Rush Tribute bands, such as Rush Archives, Rash, and others! RED ALERT! RED ALERT! We process our first genuine Case 2-1-1-2, with Jim “The Friendly Face” Brunke - Steam Punk, Rush Rat, and co-founder of Overtime Angels and the famed Rush Camps! Jim's Rush journey is quite unlike any other. Having seen the band over 100 times up through R40, Jim's a passionate guy with a big heart for helping people get a leg up. His philanthropic efforts aside, he's been up close and personal with more Rushians than anyone we've met, having logged thousands of miles, domestically and internationally to see the band do that thing it does, even that thing dey doo in The Camera Eye -> New York to London…the guys is whacked…he's personally known to the guys, yep, all of them, having spent time drinking with the two who like to socialize up on the train tracks around someplace in Toronto…and he's got Ricky & Bubbles' approval, eh! Talking with tour managers, having his personal pictures signed, talking up his effin hat, having Geddy ask him about his facial hair, pulling Alex's finger (that's what Bubbles said), having and incredible network of friends and the love of a woman, family, and community who've all scratched it live with him and Rush too, Jim is a man benefitting from them angels working overtime in his life, fo' sho…keeping the flame burning! His personal experiences are so numerous, and with his encyclopedic knowledge of set lists and when they did what live for the last 20 years, How Many Times Did They Play It was a cakewalk.  The wheel is yet again touched by someone, giving us Headling Flight off 2012's Clockwork Angels, as song Jim's seen performed many times. Ultimately, I cut a deal with her: I'll read the YA Fantasy book you want me to read, but only if you come on back on the show. She loves young adult fiction but forces herself to read adult nonfiction and fiction when required. She also enjoys videogames, watching ghost hunting shows, sloths, Marvel, and guinea pigs. Do other versions of this story exist? Sure. Do we awknowledge them? Debatable. THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY. This is a tragedy people! The miscommunication trope at it's finest, this version of Romeo and Juliet is part of the reason why we are the way we are. The music, the delivery, the water, and the religion, oh and also Paul Rudd and John Leguizamo transport us into a modernish world where there are consequences for your actions. Even for the lovers. This is not a love story. No spoilers in this episode. CW/TW: gun violence, suicide, grief *Thank you for listening to us! In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray invite bassist, Philip Sanders, to chat about the group RUSH. With RUSH Cinema Stragiato opening nationwide for a one-night showing of the Director's Cut of their R40 tour, they decided to spend the episode discussing the band. Alan's younger brother Phililp, has a lot of musical talent and is a bassist in a number of bands. As they look back at their first brushes with RUSH, they all seemed to have started in 6th grade. As Alan states, the band has been part of the sountrack of his life. As they move through the episode, they look back at the first Rush song they remember. They move to the first full album they each purchased. You cannot talk about a band without asking about seeing them live and how many times. All along they way, they bring up some of the favorite songs over the 19 studio albums RUSH released. By the end of the episode, they each give their top 5 favorite RUSH albums. They also give some final thoughts about the band and about the subjects they covered.  WALT 5. Roll the Bones 4. Grace Under Pressure 3. Permanent Waves 2. Moving Pictures 1. Signals   PHILIP 5. RUSH, part III: The 90s and 2000s. Profs Matt and Court examine an often overlooked and undervalued era in Rush's later catalog. Dr. Lewis waxes philosophical and sings the praises of albums like Roll the Bones, Counterparts, Test for Echo, Vapor Trails, Snake and Arrows and Clockwork Angels. Despite immeasurable tragedy and the band's split in the late-90s, Rush came back with a fire and creativity that only this Canadian power trio could muster.

The Office is a phenomenally popular show and fans can't seem to get enough, even after its 9 seasons ended in 2012. Is it the best show ever made or a moment in time that's shown itself to be problematic? ## Episode Outline **Topics:** The Office, Sitcoms, Long-Running Shows, Problematic Characters, Feel-Good Shows, Cringe Comedy ### First Impressions #### Z: Honestly, this wasn't a show that I thought about much when it was first airing and I'd hear people talking about it. I'd watched the UK version of Life on Mars around that time, and after hearing about how it had been butchered in its American adaptation, I was skeptical about the US The Office's quality. This impression only strengthened after I binged my way through the UK version of the show, and was completely and utterly impressed by just how hilarious it was while centring on Ricky Gervais' utterly despicable and inept David Brent. There was no way an American adaptation could take this witty and dry show and make something good -- plus there was no way that American audiences would have the patience to make it through the lead's eventual, though rocky, transformation into a caring, compassionate human being. But, here we are, covering this ongoing fandom on the show, so I must've been wrong about some aspect of the show... #### T: I mostly have seen the Office in gifs and memes (either referencing the show or involving the show), so I got the impression that the Office is kind of like the Simpsons or flossing in that it's just something that people have experienced and use a shared cultural reference. I don't know of any die-hard fans, and it doesn't seem like the sort of thing that folks are super passionate about, but sort of passively love? Also, it seems pretty cringey and I'm not super a fan of that style of humour. #### G: The cringiest thing on TV, where everything being a bummer and having awkward resolutions was the order of the day. Didn't really ever see where the 'heart' came from, let alone people watching it multiple times. ### Some Observations - The show's setting is psychologically comforting and neutral and the way that it finds humour in mundane situations leads people to watch and feel calmed/destressed - According to [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F08jgk1,%2Fm%2F07zhjj,%2Fm%2F0557yqh) the show's popularity has beaten out rival shows (Parks and Recreation, How I Met Your Mother) in recent years - Dwight Schrute's character arc could be the best in American TV - People who like the office are likely to be those who want to have control over others ### Conclusions - Z is going to watch the whole dang series - T might watch another episode or two, but the show didn't really get its hooks into him - G has already watched the series once, and would rather just go back and re-watch Parks and Rec ### Famous Last Words What did we have to say about next week's topic, Rush, with only our first impressions? **Z:** In fans' opinion… how does Clockwork Angels stack up to 2112? **T:** How much of Rush fandom is about Rush vs Prog Rock? **G:** I know a lot about the band… they seem to have a lot of fans… have they continually collected fans, or did everyone just show up around Tom Sawyer and aged? ## Where can you find us?
