We've talked on this show about the advantages of having somebody handle your money. Last month's episode on bookkeeping dives into the many ways taking financial management off your plate can empower you as a construction professional. However, profitability master Ruth King has some advice she thinks contractors should be aware of before they sign the contract and hire their bookkeeper! Karalynn is joined by the published author and podcast host of Contractor Cents to flip the script and talk about the importance of vetting the bookkeeper you hire to avoid getting screwed. Throughout her time as a profitability advisor for contractors, Ruth has encountered too many money managers that take a little- or a lot- off the top to keep for themselves. Because of this, she has some advice for how to operate when looking for a bookkeeper for your business, and times for how to notice if your bookkeeper is pulling a fast one on you! Working as a contractor can come with some stigma. There are all sorts of rumors about construction workers that homeowners perpetuate, and even more niche gossip from trade to trade. Karalynn sits down with Jana Earley, owner and head designer of Luxe Fine Finishes, to talk about how to make the sale despite the biases your potential client may have. In Jana's line of work, a history of tacky 70s- 80s-era plastered walls follows her around. People often worry work of her kind will look too outdated, or simply not sophisticated, which couldn't be further from the truth. In this episode, she talks to Karalynn about how her mindset and business practices help her rise above the rumor mill and connect with clients to make the sale, and how the work she is doing to destigmatize bot faux finishing and contractors will ultimately help her trade, and all trades, continue on! Stay tuned to find out more. Quotes"Reading Dogs, is a concept where we take specially trained dogs, send them to schools, nurseries, and private venues to help children improve their literacy and reading confidence. So the dogs come in, they don't read. The children read to them and it makes reading fun and practicing language and literacy much more fun than if they were doing it by themselves.""Dogs teach children a lot. They teach them responsibility, leadership. They can teach them empathy, how to care and also how to cope with love."Having a dog around really becomes not only a child's friend but also a teacher as well and there's a lot to gain from that.It really does take a special dog to be a reading dog. They have to be extremely calm, enjoy interaction, and be comfortable in a new environment. One of the most important things is making sure that the parents understand the part of the session. A part of what we're doing is teaching children how to safely interact with dogs.
