In diesem Sinne: upsi, pupsi. Pepsi versus Coke, Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, Edison hating Tesla? Sam and Tony dive into one of the biggest on-court rivalries of all-time, John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg in the 2017 film featuring Shia LeBeouf.
The 1980 Wimbledon men’s final between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe is one of the most famous tennis matches of all time, and it lived up to expectations as we re-watched it ahead of our second Wimbledon Re-Lived show. How was McEnroe viewed by British tennis fans at the time? How did his behaviour change when he played Borg? And in what way does this match carry a cultural influence which transcends tennis? The apex of the match was the epic fourth set tiebreak, won by McEnroe 18-16 as the level of tennis reached dizzying heights and the momentum swung back-and-forth. What was it like to play? Did McEnroe feel afterwards like he would go on to win the match? And how on earth did Borg recover for the deciding set? We hear from both men. Finally, Mary Carillo explains why it’s the best match she’s ever watched, reveals the extraordinary scene she witnessed as she flew home on the same plane as the McEnroe family, and sets up a discussion about the reasons why the Borg-McEnroe rivalry continues to shine such a bright light across the sport, despite its brevity. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Jess and Andrew enjoyed a long Friday the 13th weekend at the theater; beginning their odyssey on a Thursday with "Lean on Pete", a film that should remain long in memory. We take a walk on the psychotic side with Joaquin Phoenix in "You Were Never Really Here" A disagreement in debate is always fun, and the opinions differ on the independent Horror film "The Endless", all disagreement came in good fun. The weekend was rounded off with a tennis match between Sverrir Gudnason (Borg) and Shia LaBeouf (McEnroe) in a film that was far more entertaining than either of us expected. It is The Rock's world, and we're all just living in it, wondering why "Rampage" isn't better. Then we have yet another Netflix conversation and also dig into the new Netflix film "Come Sunday." Grierson goes solo on "The Rider" and "Borg vs. McEnroe," and we've got enough left for a meaty discussion of Steven Spielberg's "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence." The show is longer than usual, but plenty meaty. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
