Today's podcast features our Content Strategy for Digital Creators from WIBS 2021. Moderated by Ash Eliot, who you likely know from Women of the Bevolution and Brave Noise, our speakers Sarah Flora and Natalya Watson share with us how they got into beer and the road to being educators in that space. Nat chats transferrable skills to get into the industry, Sarah gives some tips on how to get started in homebrewing and then we dive into the content creator strategy. They discuss the importance of goals when crafting content and each breaks down how they approach content strategy for different platforms and audiences. Ash inquires about staying engaged when there is so much content out there already and the two of them discuss the benefits and inevitable pitfalls of podcasting. This is then followed up with some great Q&A from that day's attendees. So, as always, sit back and enjoy this episode of the Craft Fermentation Podcast.   Find Sarah Flora atWebsite: https://florabrewing.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Flora_Brewing/YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/FloraBrewingFind Natalya Watson atWebsite: https://beerwithnat.com/ Virtual Beer School: https://virtualbeerschool.com/Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/beerwithnat/Find Ash Eliot atWebsite: https://womenofthebevolution.com/Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/asheliot/Additional LinksEm Sauter, Pints and Panels https://www.pintsandpanels.com/Cicerone Certification Program cicerone.orgUK Beer Sommelier http://www.brew-school.com/courses/beer-sommelier-course/Beer Judge Certification Program https://www.bjcp.org/Find WCFA & Women's International Beer Summit at...Website: wcfa.beerInstagram: womensintlbeersummitYouTube: Women's Craft Fermentation Alliance This podcast is brought to you by the Women's Craft Fermentation Alliance, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to enabling, empowering and encouraging women and non binary folks in all facets of the craft fermentation space. Welcome to A Woman's Brew, where women talk about beer! We are back making a Brave Noise, this time with Fierce Beer! We chat to Kirsty from Fierce about their version of the beer and why they took part in the initiative. Kirsty comes from a background working in beer bars and has a lot of insight around what it's like for bar staff in the beer industry. Fierce donated their portion of Brave Noise profits to the Drinks Trust to support workers in the hospitality industry. It's good to remember that the issues raised by the Brave Noise initiative and those like it affect not just those working in breweries, but the hospitality industry as a whole. Disclaimer – in this episode we talk a lot about Beer52, through which the Fierce Brave Noise beer was distributed. We recorded this episode in August with Kirsty and the beer was released in December 2021. At A Woman's Brew we always advocate for shopping local and supporting your craft beer bars, pubs, taprooms and bottle shops, who need our support more than ever at this time. Welcome to A Woman's Brew, where women talk about beer! We are making a Brave Noise – both physically and by brewing the beer! If you haven't heard about Brave Noise, it is a global collaboration beer started by Brienne Allan. It started as a question: “Have you ever experienced sexism in the beer industry?” This opened the flood gates to reports of not just sexism, but racism, homophobia and sexual assault within the beer industry and community. To honour those that have spoken out and to try to have a safer, more inclusive beer industry, the Brave Noise collaboration was born. To take part breweries must submit their code of conduct and make this publicly available to staff and consumers. They must also commit to doing the long term work of building a more inclusive industry and make a donation to an appropriate charity or non-profit that reflects the mission of the collaboration. We were honoured to be asked by Merakai Brewing Co to be part of their Brave Noise brew – not only brewing the beer with them but also expressing why the cause is so important to us and helping to choose the non-profit partner to receive funds from the sale of the beer. We chose The Coven Brewsters Wellness Officer initiative. These with be trained staff that will attend beer events and festivals to help, support and act as witness for attendees. Good Beer Hunting

Brienne Allan became a household name in the beer industry last year, when she inadvertently sparked a reckoning against sexism in beer that quickly went global. Her face and words were featured everywhere from Imbibe to the Boston Globe, Eater, right here at Good Beer Hunting, and her Brave Noise initiative with Ash Eliot was named Brewbound's Cause of the Year for 2021. But now that nearly a year has gone by, what's changed? For starters, Brienne left her home at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts, something she'd never envisioned doing until she became a worldwide phenomenon. Part of that decision was due to the sudden, and often scary, visibility she had to confront as a public face of social justice and change, which forced her to quickly figure out who she could talk to and who to trust. But even in the darkest times, she describes pockets of joy and hope that shifted her perspective about craft beer, but ultimately kept her within its space in order to keep driving positive change. Today, Brienne and I talk about the past year—what she's learned, how she's changed, what she wants people to know, and what she's looking forward to. Later in the conversation, we're joined by her fiancé and partner Michael Fava, who shares his reaction to the reckoning as well as some of their future plans as business owners. You'll hear an exclusive announcement about that business (yes, it involves Lagers), and why we shouldn't expect the name Brienne Allan to go away anytime soon. We finish with a conversation about the current reconciliation plans for Mikkeller, which she calls a “huge breakthrough” as the first-of-its-kind effort to acknowledge, apologize, and atone for past sins. The dust hasn't settled yet, but with the help of people like Kate Bailey, Fanny Wandel, Ash Eliot, and more, Brienne's path forward is becoming slightly more clear.

Genuinely nice people seem to be harder than ever to come by. But Chris Leguizamon, otherwise known as “Chris The Beer Educator” on Instagram, is one of them. As the education program manager at Pure Project in San Diego, California, Chris is in charge of teaching both his coworkers and consumers about the joys of craft beer, coffee, and mead—a role he takes very seriously, but always manages to do with his trademark ear-to-ear smile.  Chris has been a fixture in San Diego's craft beer scene since 2014, and as one of only two Advanced Cicerones in the county as well as a Certified BJCP judge (with his eye on a National ranking), he's easily one of the most knowledgeable folks in the local industry. But where he stands out goes beyond his positive attitude and almost inescapable enthusiasm for the beverage. It's his absolute willingness to share everything he knows with anyone who wants to hear it.  In our conversation today, you'll hear from Chris — his journey into beer, his identity as a first generation Colombian-American, why he does what he does, and the value of formal beer education, as well as where those programs need to evolve to engage with the next generation of aspiring beer experts from all backgrounds. The conversation wraps up with both of our takes on the global collaboration, Brave Noise: how we feel about it, what we hope comes from it, and the urgency of listening to the voices who so desperately need to be heard.

“I wanted to create this platform and group where women can come together in safe spaces and they can network, they can find job opportunities, and just have an open dialogue,” says Ash Eliot, founder of Women of the Bevolution. With 3 years of experience in the beer industry (plus over a decade in the music industry) and a passion for promoting equal opportunity, Ash is no stranger to advocating for so-called “problem performers.” After working in the beer and alcohol world for a few years, Ash encountered some glaring issues with equal opportunity in the industry. Considering that many of the companies in question are run primarily by men, Ash decided to take matters into her own hands. She founded Women of the Bevolution, a hub for women in the beer industry looking for guidance and resources for fair treatment. After Brienne Allan, a brewer formerly of Notch Brewing, shared stories about women's mistreatment in the beer industry via her Instagram @RatMagnet, Ash teamed up with Brienne to launch Brave Noise, a global beer collaboration working to create a safe and discrimination-free beer industry. Tune into this week's episode of Problem Performers as Ash Eliot and host Rebecca Weaver dive deep into how women and people of color are marginalized and targeted when working in the beer industry. Learn more about why open dialogue is crucial for all brewery professionals, how an angel shot can save your life, and why it is crucial for consumers to understand a brewery's code of conduct before becoming a customer.   Quotes • “I wanted to kind of create this platform and group where women can come together in safe spaces and they can network, they can find job opportunities, and just have an open dialogue.” (03:39-03:50)  • "It's a lot of white males who started these businesses. They were homebrewing. They were like, ‘I'm just gonna start a business.' But they don't know how to manage people, how to create a safe environment for women, how to support them, and have these resources and have, you know, code of conduct and an HR.” (10:19-10:38)  • “Women drink beer, women brew beer.  I mean, women do everything.” (13:30-13:38)  • “Consumers need to know what they're investing their money and time into. And hopefully it is into breweries that want to change and change this industry with us.” (16:52-16:59)  • “Women that are going into these workplaces to interview for jobs...you have a right to ask how this environment is. What is your code of conduct? Behind the scenes, is it inclusive? Are there other women working here? What is your HR policy in terms of reporting situations? These are all normal questions. We need to make this normal. It should be normal." (25:06-25:40)  • “In terms of the future, I'm really optimistic and hopeful that women will leave these toxic places if they're not getting the support they need and collab with other women, start their own business, find male allies, who are supportive. Eventually I want to be part of that. I want to support them.” (39:15-39:42)    Links Find Ash on Instagram @womenofthebevolution and at https://womenofthebevolution.com  Check out Brave Noise at https://www.bravenoisebeer.com  and read up at https://www.forbes.com/sites/taranurin/2021/07/14/ratmagnets-new-collaboration-brew-aims-to-make-the-beer-industrys-metoo-moment-last/   Need support for a harassment situation as a customer or employee? Episode 156 : The Douche Is Back Nick welcomes The @pghbeerdouche (Mike) back to the pod! We start up this episode with talking about beer in the family. Mike turns around the Weekly Re-cap style and asks what I'm drinking! This launches a conversation on the local fare of the season with Marzen/Festbier/Oktoberfest style beers. Mike tells his story of Bolxtoberfest at Old Thunder. Mike got recognized for being the Douche while he was there. After Bloxtoberfest, they went to Inner Groove's Pumpkinfest. Nick re-caps his Sunday adventures before the Steeler game. At Four Points, Sara shared a story about how her mom found a beer recipe from 1924. (This recipe turned out to be a generic “how to brew beer” instead of an actual ingredient based beer.) As the recipe spawned a discussion about “dead beer styles” we obviously talk about Necromancer. This leads us to discuss Brave Noise again and we talk about some of the news of the week around MBCC and Mikkeller beer and their handling of the allegations of misconduct. As we continue the conversation around Brave Noise, we talk about women in craft beer. Mike talks about DG anniversary and our good friends at Bridge City Brinery. Mike has a bone to pick about the BCB pickles. The Douche issues a contest for the Bridge City Brinery food truck. If you order “the Douche” from the truck and finish it (Post it on instagram and tag @pghbeerdouche and @theweeklyrecap), he will get you a 4pk of craft beer! For the rest of the episode we talk about the biggest festival of the fall, @Fueledbyhops_ Drink The Cookie Table! Nick tells the traumatizing story of why he hates Titanic. We discuss James Cameron's filmography and how we grew up watching fucked up shit. After that, Nick and Jen start our review of #TRBW. We talk about the strange choice of releasing 476 Pale Ale with Ashville Brewers Guild in conjunction with TRBW and this leads to us discussing collaboration and what it means to the industry. As we move into the beer week events, we start with the happy hour before TRBW even happened. Then we cover the First Pour event, which we felt was an amazing time and really a way to get some face time with the brewery owners and brewers in a casual environment. We expand on our experience with the beer industry and how we approach supporting our friends as “influencers” in our position. Jen expands on Bloxtoberfest and the Inner Groove Pumpkinfest. Nick had problems with getting to the events on Thursday and so did Jen. Nick makes an inappropriate joke and then follows it up with making everyone aware of the Brave Noise movement and Jen chimes in on what the Brave Noise collab is to the craft beer industry. We touch on the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Diversity Council. Jen fills us in on the new Hop Farm Brewery. Saturday is up next. We ended up meeting up at the Lincoln Ave Brewery Oktoberfest and we spent some time discussing it. The end of the episode brings us to the Allegheny 6 Pack event. On this epidsode, I got to sit down (virtually) with Andy Sheridan. Andy is a professional musician and has toured the world doing what he loves. He is signed to MajorBob Publishing, where he continues to master his craft through songwriting and producing artists. Over the years, his views on purpose and meaning have evolved. We talked about being emotional without letting emotions lead, defining happiness for yourself, and what he has learned from observing his mentors. If you're a parent trying to balance being driven and being present, I really believe this episode will encourage you a ton!
