If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? And if French women scream at the top of their lungs for acceptance, respect, and change, does anyone listen? That's the question freelance writer Anaïs Lecoq set out to answer in her piece for Good Beer Hunting titled “Pas Encore — French Women Are Sick of Waiting for Their Beer Revolution,” which was published on October 20, 2022. In the piece, Anaïs describes the pervasive avoidance the French beer scene has towards conversations about sexual harrassment, violence, and assault when such conversations are initiated by women. When they do occur, they almost always end in litigation, ensuring that the current culture of fear, trauma, and repression continues to be the status quo. In fact, in our conversation today, she says the entire reason she wrote the piece is due to the fact that despite publishing an open letter signed by hundreds of women working in the French beer scene, they were met with virtual silence and apathy. What will actually get people to listen and make change, she wonders? I find myself wondering the same thing. You're about to hear what she thinks it will take, as well as a recent bombshell she hopes might trigger a #MeToo movement similar to the one Brienne Allan instigated in the United States in 2021. However, Anaïs' hope is clouded by pessimism when we discuss how even those efforts, once promising, have fizzled. Actions may start with words, but they shouldn't end there, and she describes what actions need to be taken in order for the fledgling French beer scene to grow in such a way that everyone is valued. Let's listen to what has happened, what's happening, and what she thinks is about to happen.

Welcome to A Woman's Brew, where women talk about beer! We are making a Brave Noise – both physically and by brewing the beer! If you haven't heard about Brave Noise, it is a global collaboration beer started by Brienne Allan. It started as a question: “Have you ever experienced sexism in the beer industry?” This opened the flood gates to reports of not just sexism, but racism, homophobia and sexual assault within the beer industry and community. To honour those that have spoken out and to try to have a safer, more inclusive beer industry, the Brave Noise collaboration was born. To take part breweries must submit their code of conduct and make this publicly available to staff and consumers. They must also commit to doing the long term work of building a more inclusive industry and make a donation to an appropriate charity or non-profit that reflects the mission of the collaboration. We were honoured to be asked by Merakai Brewing Co to be part of their Brave Noise brew – not only brewing the beer with them but also expressing why the cause is so important to us and helping to choose the non-profit partner to receive funds from the sale of the beer. We chose The Coven Brewsters Wellness Officer initiative. These with be trained staff that will attend beer events and festivals to help, support and act as witness for attendees. In this episode we talk to the whole of our Brave Noise Team: Emma O'Neill-Parsons @merakai_brewing Bex Morton @bexdrinksbeer Emmie Harrison-West @beerwomxn Kimberly Owen @craftbeerpinup Leeann Craven @craftbeer_redhead Ranjana Cartwright @ranji86 And shout out to Rebecca Price (@beerme_becky) who couldn't make it. Brienne Allan became a household name in the beer industry last year, when she inadvertently sparked a reckoning against sexism in beer that quickly went global. Her face and words were featured everywhere from Imbibe to the Boston Globe, Eater, right here at Good Beer Hunting, and her Brave Noise initiative with Ash Eliot was named Brewbound's Cause of the Year for 2021. But now that nearly a year has gone by, what's changed? For starters, Brienne left her home at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts, something she'd never envisioned doing until she became a worldwide phenomenon. Part of that decision was due to the sudden, and often scary, visibility she had to confront as a public face of social justice and change, which forced her to quickly figure out who she could talk to and who to trust. But even in the darkest times, she describes pockets of joy and hope that shifted her perspective about craft beer, but ultimately kept her within its space in order to keep driving positive change. Today, Brienne and I talk about the past year—what she's learned, how she's changed, what she wants people to know, and what she's looking forward to. Later in the conversation, we're joined by her fiancé and partner Michael Fava, who shares his reaction to the reckoning as well as some of their future plans as business owners. You'll hear an exclusive announcement about that business (yes, it involves Lagers), and why we shouldn't expect the name Brienne Allan to go away anytime soon. We finish with a conversation about the current reconciliation plans for Mikkeller, which she calls a “huge breakthrough” as the first-of-its-kind effort to acknowledge, apologize, and atone for past sins. The dust hasn't settled yet, but with the help of people like Kate Bailey, Fanny Wandel, Ash Eliot, and more, Brienne's path forward is becoming slightly more clear.

Beer writer Tara Nurin is the official historian of the Pink Boots Society, an organisation created in 2008 to assist, inspire and encourage women working in the beer industry.Tara's new book – A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse – celebrates the contributions and influence of female brewers and explores the forces that have erased them from the brewing world. Its publication is very timely with the beer industry having had its #metoo moment in recent months, led by Brienne Allan, a brewer based in Massachusetts who encouraged other women to share the stories of sexism and abuse they've suffered in the craft beer and brewing industry. This is certainly not an American problem. We've recently seen a survey conducted by a group of Australian women calling themselves the Beer Agents for Change, which found that 38% of people who work in the beer industry have been abused or harassed, and 90% of the people who reported that type of conduct were female. So it's in that context today that we hear from Tara about her new book. And coming up after that, you'll meet Briony Leibich, an Australian specialising in sensory analysis and expert tasting for beer, wine and food.Briony has worked as a sensory specialist for some time now, most recently at the West End Brewery in Adelaide.Since West End shut down earlier this year, Briony has focused on her own sensory consultancy called Flavour Logic.I asked Briony how she found her way into this profession.

When men align with other men who hold positions of power, they are better able to access the privilege associated with that power. This includes things like having direct access to high-profile people, job opportunities, high-profile assignments, and rewards at work. Homosocial behaviors provide men with ways to develop relationships with other men in positions of power, to their benefit. There are many ways these behaviors show up in workplaces, but they tend to result in employees tolerating and even accepting bullying, sexual harassment, discrimination, and exclusionary behaviors. Organizational banter is a great example of this and generally includes verbally attacking colleagues under the guise of “joking” to maintain dominance over others. It also involves making sexist jokes or derogatory comments based on people's identities that diminish a person's self-esteem and perceived value. When leaders remain silent, they sanction these behaviors, which also validates the people who engage in them. This can create an entire workplace culture that is hostile toward women.    A good example of this is the craft brewing industry. In May of this year, NPR reported that Brienne Allan, a brewery worker, went to Instagram to complain about sexual harassment in her workplace and thousands of other women – and a few men – chimed in with their stories including offhanded, rude comments, sexual violence and sexual harassment, as well as racism from owners and superiors. The Craft Brewing industry is being forced to reckon with the sexism, racism and sexual assault allegations.   On today's episode we are joined by Founder and Executive Director of Infinite Ingredient, Katie Muggli, who has been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years, with five years specific to the craft beer industry. Kate founded Infinite Ingredient to actively support the mental and physical well-being of individuals working in the craft beverage industry through outreach, education, and access to resources.  She shares her story and reflects on the 'me too' movement and its ripples through the craft beer industry.

The last few months in the British beer industry have been tumultuous. Inspired by the brave work of Brienne Allan, Britshbeergirl – real name Siobhan Buchanan – used her instagram platform for British beer people to tell stories of sexism, sexual harassment and exploitation in the industry. Scandals rocked several much loved small breweries as well as some of the UK's biggest – including BrewDog. My guest today, Charlotte Cook, started her career there, and while she left nearly seven years ago she is still affected by the experience – feeling strong enough about the situation at the Scottish brewery to be a signatory for Punks With Purpose, a campaign group focused on holding BrewDog's owners and directors to account and ensuring positive change. Long before that though, Charlotte – now of Coalition Brewing – has been vocal about the exploitation of workers in the beer industry, and a keen advocate of unionisation. Her outspoken nature has resulted in her being interviewed on BBC Radio, and has also inevitably got her embroiled in several online spats. As is so common with grassroots movements, she never intended to become a voice for the industry but has found herself in the role because she refused to stay quiet. We talk about how that responsibility lies with her, how she deals with the abuse she receives, and what solutions there are to the problems that plague the brewing scene. We also talk about the profoundly different breweries she's worked at during her 10 year career that also includes stints at Pohjala, Cloudwater, Hammerton and Trumans, as well as her new role as head brewer at London's Coalition, the first time she's joined a brewery at the very beginning of its journey.

If you follow news in the beer world, May 2021 became synonymous with the word “reckoning” as a wave of stories about sexual harassment, assault, and inappropriate behavior toward women were shared from across the country and world. Massachusetts brewer Brienne Allan was the catalyst for this, first sharing her own experiences on Instagram, then asking other women for their own stories, and amplifying their voices. This started on social media, but quickly became national news for industry publications, newspapers like the Boston Globe, NPR affiliates around the country, and beyond. Two of the writers who have extensively covered this story and its fallout are my colleagues at Good Beer Hunting, Beth Demmon and Kate Bernot. In this episode of our collective series, we'll hear from both of them about what it means to report on these kinds of stories, how to tell them fairly and accurately, and the toll it takes as someone who has to synthesize all of these traumas and relay them to readers in a journalistic way. You can read numerous stories by Beth and Kate right now on Good Beer Hunting, and there will be more in the future as reverberations continue to impact the industry and the way people and businesses seek to do better to protect others.

And – as always – each guest is someone who works in and is incredibly passionate about the beer and pub industry. Before the new season starts though, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention what's been going on in the beer industry of late. Over the past few weeks – here in the UK, in the US, and beyond – women in beer have shown up in numbers to call out the inappropriate and sexist treatment they've been subjected to for years. The movement began thanks to Brienne Allan in the US and Siobhan Buchanan has stepped up here in the UK to help amplify even more voices needing to be heard. Despite the progress that's been made these past few years, with more women working in and drinking beer, the thousands of incidents that have been shared on social in recent weeks show just how far we have to go. Not only for equal representation, but – more importantly – for equal treatment. My goal with the Beer with Nat podcast has always been to help shine a spotlight on women in beer, in order to show how many of us there are and to help normalize our presence. So consider this season yet another reminder from me, and my incredible guests, that beer is for everyone. Check back soon for the first episode of Season Four.

Welcome back to Happy Half Hour! This week's special guest is Beth Demmon, a freelance writer and journalist who specializes in craft beer. Beth started writing about craft beer in 2015 and has been an advocate for diversity in the industry: She founded the Diverse Beer Writers Initiative and is a member of the North American Guild of Beer Writers. Recently, she published an article on Vine Pair about allegations of rampant sexism and harassment that have been occuring in the beer industry, and the story got national attention. The allegations were brought to light by Brienne Allan, a brewer in Massachusetts. Allan posted a question on her Instagram, asking other women who work in craft beer about sexist comments they’d gotten while on the job. The responses were harrowing—and quickly encompassed not just words, but sexual harrassment and assault as well. In her post, Allan says she was asked about her credentials while she was on site helping build Notch Brewing’s new location. Beth says comments like these are microaggressions, which are “death by a thousand cuts” that exact a toll on the recipient. She says that microaggressions against women in the craft beer industry are not only too common, but the lack of accountability and consequences for perpetrators has led to the normalization of this behavior. Beth says that the sheer volume of responses from women experiencing sexism in the craft beer industry wasn’t surprising, but the number of women willing to attach a name to their response has never been seen before. With all these allegations surfacing, the industry has been forced to take action. Some breweries are implementing third-party reporting systems. For smaller breweries that don’t have human resources departments, Beth says that even working to develop a code of conduct is better than nothing—it’s a way for a company to put their values first. She also discussed the challenges of reporting on this topic. In a report like this, one might expect the number of false allegations to be anywhere from 2 to 10 percent—but more likely from 2 to 3 percent. Beth says that even if 3 percent of the reports turn out to be false, that still leaves thousands of others that cannot be ignored, and it’s clear that something needs to change, especially in San Diego, a city that historically avoids confrontation when it comes to issues like this. In Hot Plates, Sky Deck food hall is opening on the second level of Del Mar Highlands Town Center on June 11 with 13 different restaurants and food concepts, each with their own seating area. Jay Birds, a hot chicken restaurant from Long Beach, is opening in Carlsbad. Ben and Esther’s Vegetarian Jewish Deli is expanding from Portland to the Rolando/College area. Also, voting for San Diego Magazine’s Best Restaurants 2021 has begun! Cast your vote for your favorites, then see the final list of the critic’s and readers’ picks in the September issue. In Two People for Takeout / Two People for $50, Beth’s pick is Angkorian Pikestaff in East Village for their Asian fusion and Cambodian dishes. For hot, made-to-order donuts, Troy recommends Broad Street Dough Co. in Encinitas, specifically the blueberry glazed donuts. Marie’s pick is the pasta that gets prepared in a 60-pound wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano at Bencotto Italian Kitchen in Little Italy. Noah's pick is Point Loma Fish Shop for their Thursday night oyster special and fish and chips. Kairoa Brewing is David’s pick, for their salmon sashimi topped with crunchy quinoa. #102: Brienne Allan | Notch Brewing

We were felt truly honored to have the opportunity to sit down this week with the head brewer of Notch, Brienne Allan. If you don't know Brienne's name by now (or, at the very least her Instagram handle @Ratmaget), then it's probably time to find a different cell provider. She walks us through the unintended series of events that, in a matter of days, led to an absolute tsunami of shared experiences of sexism from women working in all corners of  beer, brought the topic to the forefront of conversation of the entire brewing industry, and inadvertently bestowed her with an immense amount of assumed responsibility. Brienne's perspective on sexism in beer -- and more so, everything that had BEEN happening for far too long -- is as eye-opening and honest as it challenging and inspiring, and it would be a disservice to write more about that side of conversation when its depth is simply best heard. With that said, Brienne is a brewer before anything else, and fittingly, we find the time to talk nearly as much about lagers (Notch's expertise here has been beyond established on the podcast) as we do equality. Beer, life, and conversation are each dictated by balance, after all. Please enjoy our extremely raw conversation with one of the best brewers in the country, who just HAPPENS to be looked at as the de facto voice for eliminating misogyny. No weighty burden to see here, folks........................... .............................................................................. ........ Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

More pressure to end the filibuster as Republican Senators refuse to back the Jan 6 commission. More momentum for Biden’s Build Back Better infrastructure proposal. A new polls shows that a majority of Pennsylvanians support the proposal, by the way.  It was a trifecta for the climate on Wednesday. A Dutch court ordered Royal Dutch Shell to cut its global carbon emissions by 45% by the end of 2030 in a case brought by Friends of the Earth.  Shareholder activists pushed out two of Exxon’s hand-picked board members and elected members who “pledged to steer the company toward cleaner energy and away from oil and gas.” And, shareholders at Chevron voted 61% to cut its emissions. Another proposal that would have required the company to prepare a report on the impact its business would have from the net zero 2050 scenario, lost with 48% of the vote.  ConocoPhillips has a unique solution to the melting of Alaskan permafrost on Alaska’s North Slope - refreeze the permafrost so you can drill.  A UK-based blimp company is looking to deploy hybrid airships for shorter trips between places like Liverpool and Belfast or Barcelona to the Balearic Islands. The company, Hybrid Air Vehicles, says replacing air and ship traffic with its airships could cut emissions by 90%. Half of all U.S. adults are now fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. New book finally exposes Bernie Sanders as a sham! Yes, you will not believe what this foot soldier of the ruling elite demand! When he’s on the road he demands hotel rooms with...wait for it...a KING BED and temperatures as low as 64 degrees! The hypocrite! Ladies and Gents (long pause) we got him.  Sedition Hunters, online sleuths, angry partisans and supporters of the ruling elite unearthed video footage that showed State Senator Doug Mastriano breaching police barricades & walking towards the capitol steps minutes before the building was breached on January 6th.  This latest round of reporting completely undermines the stories and statements Mastriano gave to reporters and Senate leadership in the days following the insurrection.  If that’s not bad enough, Senator Mastirano issued a statement attacking the Huffington Post for reporting on this story and reporting on the fact that he posed for pictures with Sam Lazar, an insurrectionist wanted by the FBI for using bear spray on police officers.  Mastriano compared the photos to Obama taking pictures with Bill Ayers or Louis Farrakhan. Mastriano’s statements prompted reporters to dig more into his connections with Lazar and showed that he has posed for photos with Lazar at least 5 times over the past year. Keeping up with the insurrection, Sandy Weyer, another Mastriano associate who is known as “Sedition Sandy,” was named in an FBI affidavit for entering the capitol on January 6th.   Talking about Senator Mastriano.  The Arizona Mirror, a sibling outlet related to the Pennsylvania Capital Star, reported that Senator Mastriano ordered an unauthorized audit of the 2020 election in Fulton County.  The company that conducted the audit is associated with Sydney Powell and the Stop the Steal Movement.  On top of that, they spoiled over $20,000 worth of election equipment that couldn’t be used in the previous primary.  Reps. Russ Diamond and Barabar Gleim began seeking co-sponsors for legislation that would penalize any school that teaches “critical race theory.”  Another Bucks County, PA man, Leonard Ridge, was arrested for allegedly taking part in the Jan 6 insurrection. Ridge bragged about his involvement on Snapchat. The battle of the billionaire space barons is heating up and the Senate prepares a $10 billion dollar bailout for Jeff Bezos’s “Blue Origin” after his fufus were hurt after he lost the bid to SpaceX for the moon lander.  The European Space Agency is looking to develop a GPS and communication network around the Moon to aid in Earth-to-Moon communications for future missions.  The chickens are coming home to roost in the craft beer industry. Brienne Allan, a production manager at Notch Brewing in Salem, MA asked an open-ended question on her Instagram account: Is anyone else experiencing sexist comments? As reported on Boston’s WBUR, “The answer was this cascade of experiences, flooding her private messages with a deluge of trauma. …’It escalated really quickly into people talking about sexual violence and sexual harassment, racism from owners and superiors and just how, the HR system in general is just failing people right now,’ Allan said. ‘It just escalated out of control. I have over a thousand stories up now’." The reckoning is ONLY BEGINNING.

SoCal Women In Craft Beer Respond To The Industry’s ‘Me Too’ Moment

Earlier in May, Brienne Allan set off what some are calling the craft beer industry’s “Me Too” reckoning.  The production manager at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts started sharing hundreds of stories of misogyny, sexual assault and workplace discrimination from women in the beer world on her Instagram.  This led to the firing of a staff member at the San Diego brewery Modern Times, whose CEO also stepped down amid allegations of mishandling complaints and creating a toxic work environment.  Though the current world of craft beer is male-dominated, for hundreds of years beer brewing was a woman’s task, and there’s even some thinking that iconography associated with witches - brooms, cats and pointy hats - may have originated from alewives.  We gather a roundtable of SoCal women in craft beer to respond to this moment in the industry and also discuss their own experiences, as well as the history of women in brewing.  Guests:  Alexandra Nowell, co-founder and director of brewing operations at Three Weavers Brewing Company in Inglewood  Ting Su, co-founder of Eagle Rock Brewery, where she also founded a women’s beer forum Laurie Gutierrez, vice president of SoCal Cerveceros, a latino-based homebrew club, where she heads up an all women brew crew; part time event representative for Sierra Nevada Brewing Company; co-host of The Brew'd Up Podcast, which focuses on homebrewing and craft beer Frances Michelle Cannon, executive director of the L.A. County Brewers Guild; she is also the associate editor sfor the craft beer news site and podcast TheFullPint; she tweets @FrannyFullPint

This is not the typical BNISD you have come to know and expect. We have all read the horrific, disgusting and appalling stories that have come to light in the last week. Brienne Allan aka @RatMagnet on Instagram put up a question asking Women to share their stories regarding sexism in the workplace. Disclaimer - Yes on this episode the hosts are 3 men in the world of beer, and we believe that we can’t sit back and be silent on these issues - And neither should you. The industry has been silent for too long and the silence needs to end now. So this week we present to you this episode in hopes that more men will see that it is necessary to speak out against sexism, sexual assault, racism, LGBTQ+ hate and stand with survivors, support survivors and be a part of the change desperately needed for women in this industry, far and wide and through out the world. We hope that you will sit down, listen and learn from these stories and we hope that our words can be a small piece of encouragement to women across the globe who have suffered. We want you to know - We see you, we hear you and we support you.

Nick and Alex welcome back Jen (@hellobrewtifulpgh) and our surprise guest Melissa (@bavaryinz) to the podcast this week! We get into the mask/no mask conversation and how to respect the business decisions as we move into what we hope is a post-COVID world. This leads to Mel telling us about how Hitchhiker handled the pandemic (or pandemi if you're cool) and what all went into their plans for reopening. Nick talks about his experience at Four Points North Side without having to wear a mask. To lighten the mood we talk to Mel about her hair and her history with craft beer (and her experience with Sam Bond's Garage in Eugene Oregon) before moving to our normal guest questions. We talk a bunch about emojis and then Mel gives us her top 3 beer styles. Opening up the conversation to what we're currently drinking brings us to Cinderlands, and Nick tells his story of wasting a Grand Negro Voodoo Pappy (only a few ounces!) We talk about barleywine and it becomes a polarizing topic. As we wrap up this episode, we talk about Brienne Allan (@ratmagnet) and the exposure of discrimination, sexism, and racism in the craft beer industry. We hint at upcoming guests to end this episode.
