Being a tiny world, Katherine is a professor at Fitchburg State … The same Fitchburg State (somehow) Jacques graduated from AND where he was a DJ on their station WXPL (which is where he met his bandmate/brother John.  And either John or friend of podcast Professor Chris Cook brought Katherine to Jacques' radar!) This is a DEEP dive into the over-all history of college radio – how senate land grand acts of the 1930s… led to Pixies and Mission Of Burma becoming college music darlings despite EVERYTHING working against college radio from existing – unsupportive school administrations AND student organizations, record companies not seeing them as worth sending free records to … to Tipper Gore – Parent Music Council and the Batman-forsaken FCC! Back to our time travelling shenanigans and this month we're heading back to 1981 for what may be our favourite batch of songs yet. We've got an absolutely killer selection of post punk, pop, dub, metal, & prog tracks to chuck into the battle arena to fight for supremacy. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Bauhaus, Black Flag, Black Sabbath, The Cure, Dead Kennedys, Duran Duran, Echo & The Bunnymen, Einsturzende Neubauten, Fun Boy Three, Gang Of Four, The Go-Go's, The Human League, Iron Maiden, Japan, Journey, King Crimson, Kraftwerk, Mission Of Burma, Motley Crue, New Order, The Passions, Pigbag, Pretenders, Rush, Scientist, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Soft Cell, The Teardrop Explodes, UB40 & Kim Wilde.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7fOEje9Z2pj7uyKqkZJDec?si=9593f349eb174975Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Episode #137: A lifelong Czech diplomat and currently Ambassador to Austria, Jiří Šitler talks about his career and the interesting ties between his country and Myanmar. He first official task was to negotiate terms for German compensation of Czech citizens who had been victims of forced labor and Nazi war crimes. After this, he was given the Ambassadorship to Thailand. This led to further ambassadorships in Laos, and Cambodia, and eventually the post of Director for Asia in the Czech Foreign Ministry.Šitler describes how Czech President President Havel was sympathetic to the growing Burmese aspirations for democracy. Havel helped get Aung San Suu Kyi nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Their efforts were successful, and she and Havel continued their correspondence until Havel's death in 2011.In May 2001, Šitler was appointed the Czech Ambassador to Myanmar. Because the Czech mission was so explicitly focused on human rights and democracy, the military regime was openly hostile at times. After Šitler left Myanmar in 2005, he stayed actively involved in the country.Stressing that he is speaking personally and not in any official capacity, Šitler feels there is a very compelling case for providing weapons to the resistance. He has also been heartened by the solidarity he has seen among democracy activists, even as he's been horrified by the level of violence the military has used against its own people.Šitler is uniquely well-positioned to analyze the road to reconciliation in a post-Tatmadaw Myanmar. He thinks that military commanders who massacre civilian population shouldn't be pardoned. “But at the same time, you need to move forward somehow. So it's all always a question of measure, right?” Although Šitler has traveled the world through his role as diplomat, his experiences in Myanmar stand out above all else. “This incredible commitment to the cause of freedom and democracy where people are risking so much, and still fighting and risking their lives, spending decades in prison… It was like the thoughts and approach of Václav Havel but in another part of the world.”

For the 40th anniversary of Mission of Burma's first full-length album, VS., we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Mission of Burma released their first recordings, the “Academy Fight Song” single in 1980 and the Signals, Calls, and Marches EP in 1981, they felt like they hadn't fully captured the sound they were going for yet. For this record, they decided they wanted a raw and lively sounding record that embraced the chaos of their live performances. By recording outside of their hometown of Boston for the first time, at Normandy Sound in Providence, Rhode Island, they were able to finally translate the unruly Burma sound to tape. In this episode, guitarist, Roger Miller describes this period when the band was getting more comfortable in the studio and experimenting with song structures and arrangements to craft a wildly diverse batch of songs. Bassist, Clint Conley, reflects on the context of this era and how challenging and contrary the Mission of Burma sound was for that time. Drummer, Peter Prescott, describes how the band used punk rock as a foundation but then were becoming influenced by the hardcore scene that was starting to develop. From the mystery of Martin Swope's phantom loops to Roger Miller's esoteric composition skills to Peter Prescott's evolution into a songwriter to Clint Conley's struggles with drugs and alcohol to Roger Miller's worsening tinnitus that ultimately ended the band until their unlikely second act, we'll hear the stories of how VS. came together.

I'll never forget the first time I really heard Mission Of Burma and where I was in life at that time. This is a band I find myself always going back to just like Nirvana. Completely original and incredibly talented individuals. MOB formed  out of Boston in '79  and by the time the early 80's rolled around they had already disbanded. But they left an impact on the generations to come and its as clear as day who it is and where it came from. It was a pleasure speaking to Peter about his life growing up, when he began playing music, attending shows in the punk and hardcore scene and of course, playing drums in MOB. As of late, Prescott has another outfit called Minibeast who has recently released a new album. When Clint Conley hung up his bass guitar after Mission of Burma’s initial run in 1983, he didn’t look back at music for over a decade. Trying his hand at manual labor before quickly deciding that it wasn’t for him, he went back to school to study broadcast journalism. As a thirty-something in a new field, he found his way in his new career, becoming a senior field producer at Chronicle, a popular news program at WCVB-TV in Boston, where he has been for over thirty years. In our conversation, we talk about his career path after music, and how music slowly crept back in, thanks to the ‘mania’ that comes with creativity, leading to some intense balancing of two bands, a family and a career, as Mission of Burma became more acclaimed than they had ever been. Clint is smart, funny and totally transparent about his life and career, and his story offers great tips for any musician looking to embark upon a new path. This week we’re talking about the wildly influential Mission of Burma. These guys basically created indie rock in the late 70s, were then mislabeled as punk, which led them to being pretty unpopular and quickly breaking up. Fast forward 20 years, the people realized they screwed up and Mission of Burma reunited to release four more records. Above The Basement - Boston Music and Conversation

Mission of Burma has been called, and we quote, "...one of the most important American rock bands of the last 20 years." That quote may be a bit dated, as now it may be 40 years, but either way, Clint Conley may find that to be hyperbole. But the fact remains that bands like The Pixies, Pearl Jam, Moby, REM, Nirvana and Throwing Muses (to name just a few) list Burma as a major influence, it is hard to argue with that moniker. In 1979, bass player Clint Conley, along with guitarist Roger Miller, drummer Peter Prescott and the “visually unobtrusive” Martin Swope got together to create this seminal Boston band that was part of a post-punk rock scene that inspired so many. Famous for their live performance and ear piercing volume, the amazing part of the story is that they released only an EP called Signals, Calls, and Marches in 1981 which had the fantastic track Academy Fight Song that was covered by REM and then one full LP in 1982 called VS., then took a 22-year hiatus before releasing their later works. Clint did not rest on his laurels, although he may argue that he had no laurels to rest on. He went on to get a Masters degree in broadcast journalism and ended up at Boston’s newsmagazine program Chronicle as a producer.  He later formed his own band called Consonant and produced Yo La Tengo’s debut album, but lately has been focused on family, letting go of his vinyl collection, and enjoying life in the burbs.Clint is a fantastic guy, funny, self-deprecating but very thoughtful and certainly seems very content.  We had a great conversation.

Above The Basement - Boston Music and Conversation

Boston native Mark Kates is the founder of Fenway Recordings and manages several bands, including MGMT, The Cribs, Mission of Burma, Doves, Swim Mountain and KUNZITE.He had been in the biz since he was a kid, signing a who’s who of bands over the years including Beck, Jawbreaker, Elastica, Alabama 3.When working for Geffen, he brought them Sonic Youth and also worked with Nirvana, Hole, Teenage Fanclub, XTC, Siouxsie and the Banshees, White Zombie. The list is CRAZY. Oh yeah, and he also ran the Beastie Boys record label Grand Royal Records. We could go on and on, but suffice it to say he has topped himself by sitting with Ronnie and I for a conversation that runs the gamut.

There is almost nothing drummer Peter Prescott can do that will overtake the shadow caused by his band Mission of Burma. In just a brief time in the early 80s they managed to set the template for what American post-punk should sound like. After only an album and an EP, the guys split up and did other projects, but the legend just continued to grow, culminating in being featured in the invaluable book Our Band Could Be Your Life. This provoked a victory lap in the early 2000s that resulted in more albums, tours, love and recognition and lasted over a decade. Today, with Burma behind him, Peter is focused on his excellent new band, Minibeast. We discuss how he views his career, how bands get labeled "cool", how he makes a living and what Minibeast is all about. Enjoy!  www.minibeast.net

It’s a beautiful day in Cambridge, MA when we sit down for an interview at a local dumpling shop (his recommendation). It’s all very serene in Harvard Square, a music singing acoustic classic rock songs through a small amplifier. These days, Clint Conley seems about as far from the manic energy of Mission of Burma as is humanly possible. Shortly after the end of the Boston post-punk band’s explosive four year run, the bass player became a house painter, ultimately finding his path again as a communications major. For the past 30 years, he’s worked as a producer for local television magazines, producing narrative segments on everything from artist colonies to the opioid crises. Of course, there have been flirtations with music since — including, notably, Burma’s reunion that kicked off in 2002, and continues in fits and starts to this day. It was an unexpected return to seemingly everyone including Conley, who’d mostly confined his guitar to the closet as he focused on raising a family and his production career. For now, the band is on indefinite hiatus, but as Conley will happily admit, when it comes to Mission of Burma, there’s no such thing as “never."
