Ken Fuller VK4KF left us on 5th August aged 98 years. He met his wife Pat when she was still a teenager on the range west of Sydney. Ken worked in the Queensland Rail Workshops in Ipswich, and went on to be a draftsman while studying Engineering part time. He was part of the crew monitoring rocket launches at Woomera, before becoming Science advisor to Federal Ministers in Canberra. He and Pat enjoyed sailing and after retiring they spent some years on their yacht along the Queensland coast. There he discovered Amateur Radio and received his full call with help of Amateurs on the Sunshine Coast. He gave up sailing in his 90s and went into care recently. This restricted his Amateur activity. There will be a service for him at Saint Lukes church Wooloongabba on 21st August at 11 am. Vale Ken Fuller VK4KF SK It's 16 August on the Darling Downs and most other places in Queensland. I'm John VK4JPM Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club, and we're celebrating the last day of Ekka by wondering what we might have put into our high-value showbags. You know the deal with sample bags: for $25 you get three candy bars, a plastic toy, a puzzle, a pack of crisps, and a comic that's been out of date for years. We can do better than that: for the $3 hamfest price, our pack contains 20 resistors in a value you can't use, half an Elektor kit from a british supplier, a compact fluoro tube, and a three-year back issue of an electronics magazine with part two of a thing you want to build - and no way to get the other issues. And if none of that made sense, we can help you upgrade your electronics knowledge through club meetings, radio training and our regular updates. Drop a line to education@ddrci.org.au and we'll help. Closer to home, we spent this month's club meeting looking at repeaters, and how they really work. Turned out that cavity filters and stacked folded dipoles are more of a black art than we thought, so the session was very well received, just like our updated repeater. Echolink and IRLP have been enabled on VK4RDD, and you can check those out now - the downloadable Echolink app will help you find the repeater pretty easily. VK4RDD also has some new idents, reminding users of the CTCSS access tone, and pointing to the website for further contact. It was great to see so many new faces at the meeting, and a lot of gear was sold at insane prices. Next month's club meeting will be offsite: on 14 September we're going to visit community radio station 4DDB in Toowoomba to see how broadcast audio works. Broadcasting and Amateur Radio share a lot of skills and background, and it's amazing how much fun you can have with both - sometimes even combining the two. From a radio studio you might not get as many distance records, but you could definitely get a few long playing records. There are many hams who have had careers in radio, and many people in radio and TV have become hams... in all senses of the word. The date again for the visit to Radio 4DDB: 14 September; if you can hear or read this you'll be welcome, and details will be appearing on the club website at ddrci.org.au Coming up soon on the website will be some feature articles, pointers to a some e-magazines that have been e-mailed to us, and the article by Warren VK4FJ describing how to clean back and replate a 100-year-old morse key. The club VK4RDD net is up following the callbacks, and we'd like to hear from stations who can help us test echolink. I'm John VK4JPM for the Darling Downs Radio Club. Until next week, thanks for listening.

Derek Marsh joins Dr. Sandie Morgan to reflect on what they learned inside refugee communities in Greece — where Sudanese survivors of labor trafficking, and mothers rebuilding after violence, reveal how trust, disclosure, and practical support can change what people are able to name, ask for, and access.Chapters(00:00) - Welcome and What Made This Year's Greece Trip Different (04:51) - Inside the Refugee Camp at Kyllini (08:11) - Why Survivors Hesitate to Disclose — and the Brutality They Described (10:21) - Man to Man: Opening Up About Exploitation That Hasn't Stopped (14:46) - How Greece Identifies Victims While Saving Lives (17:43) - A Day of Respite: The Single-Mothers Camp (23:13) - Building Resilience and the Power of a Positive Presence (29:49) - Taking the Lessons Home: Meeting People Where They Are About Derek MarshDerek Marsh is Associate Director of the Global Center for Women and Justice at Vanguard University, where his work centers on education, prevention, and labor trafficking awareness. A longtime collaborator with Dr. Sandie Morgan and a recurring voice on the Ending Human Trafficking Podcast, he helps lead the Global Center's annual study-abroad program in Greece, returning to refugee-serving communities there many times over the years. He came to anti-trafficking work through law enforcement, founding the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force, and brings that frontline perspective to questions of victim identification and case development. On this trip, his expertise in labor trafficking — and his ability to connect man-to-man with male survivors who are often reluctant to identify themselves as victims — created space for Sudanese refugees to disclose exploitation they had not previously named.Key Points• This year's student group was strikingly independent, and a visit to the Young Diplomat Academy — hosted by Greece's National Human Trafficking Rapporteur — opened the door to a possible future partnership.• For the first time, the team entered a refugee camp in remote Kyllini, where Sudanese men who had been labor trafficked lived three-and-a-half hours from Athens, making access to paperwork and services extremely difficult.• Survivors were hesitant to disclose their trafficking — partly because earlier promises of help had gone unfulfilled — and when they did open up, Derek was struck by how violent and physical their labor trafficking had been.• Having a man speak man-to-man with male survivors lowered their barriers, and they revealed that exploitation was continuing right near the camp, where local actors had quickly learned to target new arrivals.• Greece's EKKA reported 891 identified victims — an admirable number for a nation of under 11 million on the front line of the Mediterranean migration crisis, where authorities must prioritize saving lives before investigating crimes.• At a separate camp for single mothers near Pyrgos, the team hosted a respite event with childcare, art therapy, and resources; the women had walked 45 minutes carrying their children to attend.• A student caring for a three-year-old watched him duck and cover at the sound of a passing plane — a vivid reminder that reaching safety is not enough, and that building resilience is key to a child's recovery.• The closing challenge: you don't need to visit a refugee camp to help — meet displaced people where they are, understand their context, and "look for the handle close to you," whether abroad or in your own community.Resources• Global Center for Women and Justice• Humanitarian Initiative Bridges• A21• EKKA — National Centre for Social Solidarity (National Referral Mechanism)• Ending Human Trafficking — Episode 371: Dr. Heracles Moskoff

It is a privilege to welcome singer-songwriter Lisa De Angelis to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Based in Brisbane, Australia, Lisa is a firecracker, quickly cementing herself as one of country music's most unique, exciting voices today. A Southern Gothic base, hints of Justin Townes Earle, Shakey Graves, and Townes Van Zandt, Sierra Ferrell lashings, and Ennio Morricone dusting make up her signature sound: sweeping, cinematic Americana/Blues-Roots music. Lisa's art and path would always be unconventional – and she only picked up a guitar for the first time in 2017.Since graduating from the Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA) 's prestigious Academy of Country Music and playing her first Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2019, Lisa De Angelis has toured with and opened shows for some of Australia's best performers, including Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon), Steve Kilbey (The Church), Amber Lawrence, Hayley Jensen, Catherine Britt, and Melody Moko. A mentee of Australian country music heavyweights Fanny Lumsden and the Flood's Kevin Bennett, Lisa's debut and sophomore songs have garnered airplay on ABC Country, CMT, and KIX Country Radio. Last month, she released her third single: "My Sister's Blue Suitcase," which Lisa recorded and co-produced with her partner Paul Bain at their Brisbane private studio. The release comes on the heels of a forced six-month hiatus for Lisa after a lengthy illness in 2022 took the hearing in her left ear. The devasting loss barely slowed her roll, though; Lisa was back touring with Amber Lawrence, playing Brisbane's Ekka, and being accepted into AIR's Women in Music Mentorship Program in the second half of 2022. Scrappy, vulnerable, and heartfelt, "part Judy Garland, part Saturday Night Live comedian," Lisa is currently recording and co-producing her debut album, due for release in 2024. In this edition of The Jake's Take's with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lisa De Angelis spoke about the stories behind her songs: "Tumblin' Back," "Hunger Pains," and "My Sister's Blue Suitcase." She also talked about breaking into both the Australian and international music markets.
