It is a privilege to welcome singer-songwriter Lisa De Angelis to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Based in Brisbane, Australia, Lisa is a firecracker, quickly cementing herself as one of country music's most unique, exciting voices today. A Southern Gothic base, hints of Justin Townes Earle, Shakey Graves, and Townes Van Zandt, Sierra Ferrell lashings, and Ennio Morricone dusting make up her signature sound: sweeping, cinematic Americana/Blues-Roots music. Lisa's art and path would always be unconventional – and she only picked up a guitar for the first time in 2017.Since graduating from the Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA) 's prestigious Academy of Country Music and playing her first Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2019, Lisa De Angelis has toured with and opened shows for some of Australia's best performers, including Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon), Steve Kilbey (The Church), Amber Lawrence, Hayley Jensen, Catherine Britt, and Melody Moko. A mentee of Australian country music heavyweights Fanny Lumsden and the Flood's Kevin Bennett, Lisa's debut and sophomore songs have garnered airplay on ABC Country, CMT, and KIX Country Radio. Last month, she released her third single: "My Sister's Blue Suitcase," which Lisa recorded and co-produced with her partner Paul Bain at their Brisbane private studio. The release comes on the heels of a forced six-month hiatus for Lisa after a lengthy illness in 2022 took the hearing in her left ear. The devasting loss barely slowed her roll, though; Lisa was back touring with Amber Lawrence, playing Brisbane's Ekka, and being accepted into AIR's Women in Music Mentorship Program in the second half of 2022. Scrappy, vulnerable, and heartfelt, "part Judy Garland, part Saturday Night Live comedian," Lisa is currently recording and co-producing her debut album, due for release in 2024. In this edition of The Jake's Take's with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lisa De Angelis spoke about the stories behind her songs: "Tumblin' Back," "Hunger Pains," and "My Sister's Blue Suitcase." She also talked about breaking into both the Australian and international music markets.
It's officially 100 days until Queensland can celebrate its Royal Show - the beloved Ekka! But why do we call it the Ekka? And where did the term "sideshow alley" come from? Professor Roly Sussex is digging into the Ekka terminology.

G'day and welcome back to the Humans of Agriculture podcast. This week, I'm on Yuggerra and Turrbal country and I'd like to pay my respects to their elders past, present and future generations. To paint the picture of where we are, we're up at the Ekka in Brisbane, after a couple of years away from the main ring, it is all back and happening! We're standing at the back of the grandstand overlooking the cattle ring. My next guest is Tim McKinnon, Tim is a Senior Director with LAWD and is a leader valuer for Australian rural properties. Like many of our guests, Tim's involvement in agriculture started at a young age on his family's dairy farm in SW Vic. Tim and I chat about his early career aspirations - the dream to become a stock and station agent, heading to the big city lights of Melbourne to study a property course and how that opportunity opened the door for him.As one of the founders of LAWD, we chat about the priorities of the business in the early days and how they began to build their team and culture, the importance of backing yourself, the learnings from a new board and setting the standards for what the business could be, not what it was. I enjoyed chatting about the Australian Rural Leadership program with Tim and how this has helped shape his perspectives, a bigger question around belonging and working in agriculture from a capital city and finally his advice to year 10 students. Tim McKinnon started life on a dairy farm in South Western Victoria. Like many farm kids, Tim lived for the time on the farm whether that was before or after school or during school holidays. Today, Tim is a Senior Director with LAWD. In this chat, while we're standing overlooking the cattle ring, Tim and I chat about that journey from farm kid, the role of mentors, what his experience was like with the Australian Rural Leadership Program, and the opportunity to be in the early stages of creating a business alongside some of the leaders in the agriculture industry. If this is your first time listening to our podcast, we're on a mission to find out more about our food system from the people involved with it and each week we sit down with people from all walks of life and chat about their life and their journey.
We're headed to the show!! Whether it's the EKKA, The Royal Melbourne Show or Royal Easter Show, we've all had some sort of experience with copious amounts of sugar and rides....
