My friend of 50+ years, Justin Rubin, joins me and shares his recent experience facing the L.A. Wildfires and how the fires have affected his closest friends in the surrounding areas, and how L.A. is rising to the occasion as they enter the rebuilding process. He relives his journey of his early days at Canterbury School when his world was rocked by the loss of his brother, Greg, from a brain tumor in 1984, followed by the loss of his sister, Carolyn, in 2004 from the same type of brain tumor that took Greg, exactly 20 years ago to the day. He describes how he has coped with the losses and how music helps heal his grief. We dive into lighter notes including his love of all genres, and he explains why “if it doesn't suck, then I'm into it.” We close out the conversation by learning what his wife, Tara, and 3 young adult “children” are up to in 2025.Join us, and let's see where this energy takes us!*Recorded on February 13th, 2025Hello Sunshine / Bruce Springsteen https://music.apple.com/us/album/hello-sunshine/1459884961?i=1459885035Jeremy / Pearl Jam https://music.apple.com/us/album/jeremy-live-mtv-unplugged/1530957891?i=1530958222Elephant / Jason Izbell https://music.apple.com/us/album/elephant/644761037?i=644761044Fire On The Mountain / Grateful Dead https://youtu.be/fStQUpqVLM8?si=rBdzZJ-LucTP3tUJOrange Sky / Alexi Murdoch https://music.apple.com/us/album/orange-sky/20782605?i=20782599

On Day 2 of my recent pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the Dead & Company shows at Sphere, I sit down with the person that I have proudly seen the most concerts with over the years, fellow Canterbury School alum and lifelong Deadhead, Mr. Andrew “Garv” Hammer. Garv and I take a walk down memory lane revisiting life at boarding school, exploring the bonds that the class of ‘86 (my crew) and the class of ‘85 (his crew, affectionately known as The Bakers Dozen) had back in the day. Having the memory of an elephant, Garv brings us back to the highlights of his 100+ concerts with incredible clarity and amazing detail. We wrap up by diving into the brotherhood known as the Gentlemens Quarterly, aka the “GQ”, the unique institution that continues to stand the test of time after 23 years and over 90 consecutive outings. A rural North Canterbury school is among those rejecting a government offer of free imported synthetic carpet saying it's highly offensive to its wider farming community and instead it will fundraise for wool carpet. Now carpet company Bremworth is also offering a 30% discount on wool carpet for schools. And it says the Ministry of Education should give schools the cash to make their own choice rather than supplying tiles made from petroleum derived plastic. It follows the Ministry's controversial decision to award a multi million dollar contract to US firm Milliken to lay nylon carpet tiles in more than 600 rural schools, which sparked outrage from communities and farmers. National Party MP Sam Uffindell was kicked out of King's College after beating up a younger pupil at the exclusive school. Uffindell was sixteen at the time, while the boy he hit was aged thirteen. It all happened decades ago. Should people in general, and politicians in particular, be held accountable for historical wrongdoing of this kind? Veteran media educator and former University of Canterbury School of Political Science and Communications head Jim Tully spoke to Guyon Espiner.

Dominick John Dunne (October 29, 1925 – August 26, 2009) was an American writer, investigative journalist, and producer. He began his career in film and television as a producer of the pioneering gay film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_in_the_Band_(1970_film) (The Boys in the Band) (1970) and as the producer of the award-winning drug film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Panic_in_Needle_Park (The Panic in Needle Park) (1971). He turned to writing in the early 1970s, and after the 1982 murder of his daughter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominique_Dunne (Dominique), came to focus on the ways in which wealth and high society interact with the judicial system. Dunne was a frequent contributor to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_Fair_(magazine) (Vanity Fair), and from the 1980s, appeared regularly on television discussing crime. Dunne was born in 1925 in Hartford, Connecticut, the second of six children of Richard Edwin Dunne, a hospital chief of staff and heart surgeon, and Dorothy Frances (née Burns). His maternal grandfather, Dominick Francis Burns (1857–1940), was a successful grocer who in 1919 co-founded the Park Street Trust Company, a neighborhood bank. Although his Irish Catholic family was affluent, Dunne recalled feeling like an outsider in the predominantly "WASPish" West Hartford suburb where he grew up. As a boy, Dunne was known as Nicky. He attended the Kingswood School and the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut, but was drafted into the Army during his senior year of high school. He served in World War II and received the Bronze Star for heroism during the Battle of Metz. After the war, Dunne attended Williams College from which he graduated in 1949. Dunne was the older brother of writer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gregory_Dunne (John Gregory Dunne) (1932–2003), a screenwriter and critic who married the writer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Didion (Joan Didion). The brothers wrote a column for The Saturday Evening Post and collaborated on the film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Panic_in_Needle_Park (The Panic in Needle Park): John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion wrote the screenplay, and Dominick Dunne produced the film (which featured actor Al Pacino in his first leading role).

In this episode I speak with Richard John Andrews. Richard is the Owner and Director of Richard John Andrews Ltd. establishing his architecture and design studio in 2017. Richard's design studio came about organically after completing a self-build project of his own home 'the cork house' as well as a design collaboration alongside an internationally renowned artist, Conrad Shawcross RA. Having studied architecture at the respected Canterbury School of Architecture, Richard acquired both RIBA part I and RIBA part II qualifications. Richard achieved a first class with honours at RIBA part II and was also nominated for the RIBA Silver President's Medal for his thesis work. Richard has also worked for several award-winning architectural firms including Foster + Partners, Michaelis Boyd Associates & DOS Architects helping to design numerous projects ranging from large scale commerce buildings to domestic residences. In this episode Richard discusses the different pathway he has taken towards becoming an architect, one which has led him to accruing a large amount of project leadership and practical construction experience in his own business prior to becoming a registered architect. This untraditional sequence of experience and registration raises pertinent questions about the process of becoming qualified which are discussed here.
