Lucy Fleming and Simon Williams give Rosebud a truly romantic Valentine's treat today, as they read the wartime letters of Lucy's parents: Celia Johnson, the great actress and star of Brief Encounter, and Peter Fleming, writer and older brother of Ian Fleming. The letters you hear in this episode were written from 1940 until VE Day, while Peter was away in the Burma and India, working for Lord Wavell, and Celia was at home looking after their young son and becoming known as a film actress. In 1945 she plays the lead in Brief Encounter, one of the greatest British films ever made. These letters are so tender and evocative, and transport you to another time - one of bravery, decency and self-deprecation. Lucy and Simon are themselves married, and have been together for 40 years, and are both successful actors - Archers fans will, in particular, be very familiar with their voices! They talk to Gyles about their first memories, how they met, and tell Gyles the secret to a long and happy marriage. Lucy and Simon read these letters live on stage in their brilliant show, Posting Letters to the Moon, which is touring the UK now - tickets are available at https://www.postingletterstothemoon.com/tickets. Either you're blissfully in love and the day is a romantic dream, or, you are not in love and part of you wants to stomp all the roses and put the chocolate bon-bons in a sling shot and pummel Cupid. Whatever your head space this Valentine's Day, Steve and Nan have a movie for you. Listen in as they share some of their favorite romantic movies to get you in the mood, or give you something to aspire to next year.

This week, Rob and Duncan are telling the story of a ship... or, at least, the story of Noël Coward's story of a ship. It's In Which We Serve! Directed by Coward and David Lean (shipped in, no pun intended, for the action sequences) and starring Coward, John Mills, Bernard Miles, Celia Johnson and Richard Attenborough, this 1942 movie (yes, the war is still raging) tells what was then a very fresh story of the 1941 exploits of Lord Louis Mountbatten (here referred to as Captain Kinross) and the HMS Torrin. A good film? A good ship? And did this change the course of the war? Presented by Duncan Weldon and Robert Hutton. Executive produced by Nick Hilton for Podot. Produced by Ewan Cameron. 0132 – Diction For Communication Diction for communicationTimes and expectations change, so exacting and over-clear clarity of every single syllable is usually unnecessary. It can make you sound at best old-fashioned and at worst pedantically petulant. Heck, even the Queen has changed how she speaks![1],[2] So even though there are few calls nowadays for a cut-glass pronunciation such as Celia Johnson in the 1945 film “Brief Encounter”[3], appropriate diction is still important for successful communication. How often do you hear of “N/A chess”, “hoe-moaners” and “pea-stalks”?[4] What about when the amount of money spent on the London Underground is cut and we are told that the “investment on the chewb has been re-juiced”? And what day comes after Monday? Is it, as you often hear, “Choose-day”? Some people may insist that you pronounce a word ‘super-correctly’ but it’ll be up to you or a studio director or producer to decide whether you have been sloppy or simply moved with the times if you say “FEB-you-ree” rather than “FEB-roo-arry”. I’d personally go with the former, although I do wince when I hear “kloze” for “clothes” and “nooz” for “nyooze”. It’s also the case that some people don’t fully pronounce the k in “asked” so rather than “arse-k-t” it comes out more as “arsed”!== [1] https://www.english.com/blog/queens-english/ [2] A fascinating article on how American English has altered since WW2, especially amongst broadcasters: https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2015/06/that-weirdo-announcer-voice-accent-where-it-came-from-and-why-it-went-away/395141/ [3] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E79g3robJWw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oEw--3QdXM [4] If you haven’t worked them out, they are ‘NHS’, ‘home-owners’ and peace talks’ – but you would be forgiven for not understanding given the way some people talk..!==Through these under-5-minute episodes, you can build your confidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection and projection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mic techniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a career spent in TV and radio studios. And as themes develop over the weeks (that is, they are not random topics day-by-day), this is a free, course to help you GET A BETTER BROADCAST, PODCAST AND VIDEO VOICE.Look out for more details of the book during 2021.Contacts: https://linktr.ee/Peter_Stewart Peter has been around voice and audio all his working life and has trained hundreds of broadcasters in all styles of radio from pop music stations such as Capital FM and BBC Radio 1 to Heart FM, the classical music station BBC Radio 3 and regional BBC stations. Is this one of the most realistic portrayals of romance in film history? Brendan and Jason debate that this week during their discussion of David Lean's "Brief Encounter" (#2 on the list). They also talk about the subplot that nicely mirrors the main love story, a musical cue that inspired a very popular ballad about loneliness, Lean taking shots at melodrama of the time and much more. Plus: The guys delve a little bit into the life of the playwright/screenwriter Noel Coward and his near-assassination.   The guys also roll the dice to find out what they'll be watching next week. Locals Warned That 'Malfunction' During Test at SpaceX Facility Could Shatter Windows Link: https://gizmodo.com/locals-warned-that-malfunction-during-test-at-spacex-fa-1837562834 Residents in Boca Chica Village, Texas, near a SpaceX facility in Brownsville received a warning from the Cameron County Office of Emergency Management that tests of the company's Starhopper prototype on Aug. 26 could break windows in their homes, according to the Brownsville Herald. The alert stated that flight testing activities from 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. ET carry “a risk that a malfunction of the SpaceX vehicle during flight will create an overpressure event that can break windows.” Officials wrote in the warning that residents must evacuate their residences at that time to avoid being sprayed with shattered glass: “At a minimum, you must exit your home or structure and be outside of any building on your property... to avoid or minimize the risk of injury.” It's reasonable to assume that the overpressure referred to would be the result of the prototype exploding, generating enough force to damage nearby buildings. On Monday, SpaceX hopes to have Starhopper launch to a full 650 feet (198 meters) before returning to the launchpad; if it's successful, CEO Elon Musk says he will follow up with a public presentation “hopefully mid-September” giving more details on the project. “I'm very angry,” local part-time resident Celia Johnson told Business Insider. “I feel like we are in a war zone running out of our houses so they won't collapse on us... Our rights have been terminated by money, greed, and politics.” “I am shocked, angry, and concerned about what kind of damage I might sustain,” Cheryl Stevens, who owns a house in Boca Chica, told the site. “Also bewildered as far as what to do that day. I don't know how to prepare for this. I plan to call the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] on Monday to discuss the civil rights violations among other things.” Show Stuff UBR Alien Hunter : Chapter One Beta - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.UBR.UBRRobotron The Dark Horde, LLC – http://www.thedarkhorde.com Twitter @DarkHorde TeePublic Store - Get your UBR goodies today! http://tee.pub/lic/2GQuXxn79dg UBR Truth Seekers Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/216706068856746 Manny Moonraker: https://www.facebook.com/MannyMoonraker/ UFO Buster Radio: https://www.facebook.com/UFOBusterRadio YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCggl8-aPBDo7wXJQ43TiluA To contact Manny: manny@ufobusterradio.com, or on Twitter @ufobusterradio Call the show anytime at (972) 290-1329 and leave us a message with your point of view, UFO sighting, and ghostly experiences or join the discussion on www.ufobusterradio.com For Skype Users: bosscrawler

Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 16, Sam is joined by freelance film critic Alasdair Bayman, writer for The Quietus, Little White Lies and CineVue.  Alasdair has chosen David Lean’s 1945 classic Brief Encounter (86 minutes), written by Noël Coward, starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. Sam and Alasdair discuss the intense performances from the cast, the romantic energy in the film and the perils of a dropped tea room bun. NB. Sam incorrectly says Brief Encounter is the (current) oldest film in the festival. Disney's Dumbo (1941) actually holds that title - as discussed in episode 14.  We'll be back in a couple of weeks.   Rate and subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/90minfilm We're also doing our very first live show at the London Podcast Festival on 14 September, with special guests Helen Zaltzman and Martin Austwick. Tickets on sale here.  Website: 90minfilmfest.comTweet: @90MinFilmFest Instagram: @90MinFilmFest  Hosted by @sam_clements.
