What would you do with the incredible power of time travel? No, look... no, you can't stop historical tragedies from happening because you can only go back in time 48 hours so- no, you can't buy a lottery ticket either because you're a teenager in this scenario, so you- no, you can't see wonderful things all over the world, you have to remain within a 20 minute travel radius of your school. You'd use it to stop nerds embarrassing themselves two days in the past? Yeah, that's probably as good as it's going to get, isn't it.That's the decision the heroes of this week's DCOM, 2008's Minutemen, also come to and before long they're popping out of a time hole to stop a nerd from getting pantsed, and barreling through the space time continuum to prevent a geek from walking around school with toilet paper stuck to his shoe. But when their chronovigilantism offers one of them a chance to undo his greatest mistake, will he take it? Since the basic cable debut of The Disney Channel in April 1983, the House of Mouse has used its family-oriented network to feature its best movie ideas that weren't quite ready for the silver screen. At first the films were released under the name “Disney Channel Premiere Films,” but since 1997, they have been released under the banner Disney Channel Original Movie – or DCOM – up until 2022, when Disney+ took up the mantle. Regardless of the term you use to describe these feature-length gems, they bring to the fore a feeling of intense nostalgia. Generations are defined by the DCOM movies of someone's particular childhood! As always, this led the Great Pop Culture Debate team to wonder...what is the Best Disney Channel Original Movie? Movies discussed: High School Musical, The Thirteenth Year, Twitches, Smart House, Zenon: Girl of the Future, Tru Confessions, Quints, Descendants, Cadet Kelly, Brink!, Teen Beach Movie, Halloweentown, The Cheetah Girls, Get a Clue, Zombies, Camp Rock. From Huddersfield to Bangkok, pop fans - are you ready for an adventure? Join Joel and David as they kick start a new ‘Discovering' series where they each pick a hidden gem of an artist from the 2000s and select 5 songs from their catalogue for a taste test! Signed to Jive Records and launched in 1999, British pop starlet Ellie Campbell looked and sounded like a ready-made pop star here for the GMTV and Smash Hits audience! Despite having no formal singing or dance training, Ellie's warm soulful tone and star quality was undeniable. The Yorkshire songstress worked with same hitmakers behind Steps (Pete Waterman, Mark Topham, Karl Twigg), launched a handful of singles - including the UK Top 30 smash ‘So Many Ways' - and even found herself performing at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! Though she wasn't in the pop game for long, Ellie's bops are forever - and her self-titled album “Ellie” is a real gem! Before LISA from BLACKPINK, in the 2000s, the world had Thai pop princess Tata Young. Her crossover success in Japan, India, China and across Southeast Asia was pretty much unheard of. Thanks in huge part to her fun signature banger and your new favourite bratty anthem: ‘Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy' (co-written by legendary pop songwriter Savan Kotecha, who has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney, One Direction, and Dannii Minogue). Tata's catalogue of English tunes is top-tier, as she brings her Main Pop Girl Energy to songs that would be released in the West by Ashley Tisdale, The Cheetah Girls, Play and more. The writing credits on her three English albums read like a ‘who's who' of RBAY! royalty - Jamelia, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Samantha Jade etc. If you're liking this ‘Discovering' concept - let Joel and David know in the comments who you'd like us to cover next! Raven-Symoné hosts The CW's upcoming original game show SCRABBLE. Symoné has been a household name and a fan favorite for most of her life. She commands an iconic Hollywood career as a multi-hyphenate actor, singer, producer, and director. Most recently she starred, executive produced, and directed the self-titled and critically acclaimed Disney Channel series, "Raven's Home," which ran for 6 seasons. This series was a welcomed return to the Disney family after her long run as a teenager on "That's So Raven," which marked the first time in the Disney Channel's history that a Black woman starred in a self-titled comedy series. At age 19, Symoné was named producer of the series, which won four NAACP Image Awards, two Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Children's Program, during its successful run. Symoné got her start in television 33 years ago, when audiences fell in love with her portrayal of Olivia on the Emmy Award-winning series "The Cosby Show" for which she received a Young Artist Award for Exceptional Performance by a Young Actress. She later won a starring role in the comedy series "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper," which aired for 5 seasons. Raven became a pop sensation when she joined the live-action version of "The Cheetah Girls" movie, which was based on the books of the same name. She starred in both Disney Channel Original Movies "The Cheetah Girls" and "Cheetah Girls 2," and the group became a phenomenon. Her solo musical career has also spanned decades. She has released four studio albums, "Here's to New Dreams," "Undeniable," "This Is My Time," and "Raven-Symoné." Her talent and powerful vocal ability led her to Broadway, where she headlined the hit musical "Sister Act." While in New York, she also spent five seasons on the Emmy-winning ABC talk show "The View." In addition to her on-camera work, Symoné is a prolific director and has several projects in development under her production banner, I See Pictures, which focuses on creating powerful and meaningful stories about underrepresented communities and championing LGBTQ+ voices. Symoné lives in Los Angeles with her wife and producing partner, Miranda Pearman-Maday.The CW's upcoming original game show SCRABBLE, hosted by Emmy® award-winning fan favorite actor, singer, producer, and director Raven-Symoné, is a captivating, fast-paced take on the global board-game phenomenon. In each episode, wordsmiths battle it out by playing a series of addictive, word-based games to win points and add words to a giant SCRABBLE board in the center of the set. SCRABBLE is produced by Hasbro Entertainment, The CW, Mattel Television Studios and Lionsgate Alternative Television. The Media Mentions Crew sits down to explain "The Cheetah Girls 2"
High School Musical may have been the most successful musical DCOM, but it wasn't the first. That dubious honour belongs to 2003's The Cheetah Girls, which charts the fortunes of a four piece girl group as they navigate friendship, fame, and deciding whether or not to trust a man who is literally named 'Jackal Johnson.' When we first meet the Cheetah Girls they're performing at kids' birthday parties to audiences just waiting for them to shut up so they can go ham on the pinata. But a chance encounter with a famous music producer leads them down a dark path that ends the same way so many of these stories do: with a dog in a hole. Can the Cheetahs stay true to themselves while doing what it takes to launch their music career? Is one of their dads really Super Mario in witness protection? And why is a full third of this movie a musicless dog rescue? Ever imagined yourself strutting down the bustling streets of New York City or twirling through the historic avenues of Barcelona as part of the iconic Cheetah Girls? Join us as we take you on a vibrant journey with guest Kalen Allen, exploring the rich tapestry of dance, music, and cultural resonance woven by the Cheetah Girls franchise. As we unravel the Cheetah mystique, we uncover the potent influence of Raven-Symoné and speculate on the untapped potential of the group had she been more deeply integrated. The nostalgia is palpable as we revisit the group's dynamic evolution, from the fierce streets of NYC to the enchanting backdrop of Spain, and even touch on the third film's disconnect without Raven's presence. These sequels weren't just follow-ups; they were a testament to the Cheetah Girls' staying power and their impact on a generation yearning for representation on the Disney Channel stage.Highlights-Black Representation in Media-The Future of the Cheetah Girls-Appreciation for Raven Simone's Impact-Opinions on Solo Albums-Discussion About Songs in a Movie-Fun Facts and Casting Speculation-Opinions on Mean Girls the Musical-Nostalgia for Disney Channel Original Movie Follow Kalen Allenhttps://www.instagram.com/thekalenallenhttps://www.tiktok.com/@thekalenallenhttps://www.twitter.com/thekalenallen Follow Sequoiahttps://www.instagram.com/sequoiabholmeshttps://www.tiktok.com/@sequoiabholmeshttps://twitter.com/sequoiabholmes Follow BPLP Podhttps://www.instagram.com/bplppodhttps://twitter.com/bplppodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@bplppod
I know, I know, it's been quite a while fam. But….we are so freaking back! We might be a little rusty, and not super clear about how any of this stuff usually works, but luckily we aren't taking the stage alone. That's right, it's extremely fortuitous for us that everyone's favorite girl group happen to be staging their grand comeback as well. You guessed it, The Cheetah Girls are here and we are going to SPAIN! Come along as we strut down the streets of Barcelona, meet the locals, and cause a riot with the most chaotic and frenetic concert ever performed. Oh, and rhyme a lot of Spanish words with “Cheetah”. Luke battles through illness and missed out on some crazy extras. Emma sings most of the soundtrack and disrespects a mall. Talking Points: We're Back!
