In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, the hosts, Meaghan and Arthur, delve into a new chapter of the podcast. The audience is informed about Shirin's temporary departure due to her pregnancy as Shirin steps away to focus on her growing family, Arthur, co-producer of the Fully-Booked podcast, steps in to co-host alongside Meaghan. This change, while temporary, marks a significant shift in the dynamic of the show. Arthur’s background in coding and his technical contributions to the website bring a fresh perspective to the podcast. The hosts humorously discuss his 60% familiarity with the topics they’ll cover and joke about potential jousting matches for hosting rights when Shirin returns. Despite the change, the team is optimistic about the new direction and is ready to embrace 2025 with fresh content and themes. Kicking Off 2025: A Sci-Fi Focus As the podcast launches into the new year, Meaghan and Arthur introduce a month-long exploration of science fiction. This is a notable shift, as Meaghan admits that she and Shirin have historically read very little of the genre. However, Arthur’s passion for sci-fi provides the perfect opportunity to delve into its rich and diverse discussions. The hosts acknowledge the challenges they faced in planning sci-fi content in the past. With Arthur’s enthusiasm, planning the month’s content was surprisingly straightforward. The podcast promises to cover various aspects of sci-fi, including genre mashups, successful and unsuccessful adaptations, and newer releases. This thematic focus aims to appeal to long-time sci-fi enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Sci-Fi Genre Mashups: Exploring New Horizons One of the main themes of the episode is the exploration of sci-fi genre mashups. Meaghan and Arthur discuss how sci-fi often blends seamlessly with other genres, creating unique storytelling opportunities. They highlight several examples: Sci-Fi and Mystery: The Midsolar Murders series by Mur Lafferty combines amateur sleuthing with extraterrestrial settings. Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter and Wayward Pines series mix speculative fiction with gripping mysteries. Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain explores a medical mystery linked to a satellite crash, blending suspense with scientific intrigue. Sci-Fi and Horror: The hosts delve into the subgenre of sci-fi horror, highlighting works like Caitlin Starling’s The Luminous Dead and David Wellington’s Red Space series (Paradise-1, Revenant X). They also discuss the historical roots of the genre, referencing classics like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend. Sci-Fi and Fantasy: Works like Christopher Paolini’s To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series exemplify the blend of futuristic technology and fantastical elements. Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth series introduces necromancy into a science fiction setting, creating a unique narrative style. Sci-Fi and Historical Fiction: Stephen King’s 11/22/63 combines time travel with the historical backdrop of the Kennedy assassination. Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle explores an alternate history where the Axis powers won World War II. Sci-Fi and Romance: Meaghan and Arthur touch on the lighter side of sci-fi with titles like Alyssa Cole’s The AI Who Loved Me, which combines AI with human connections, and Ruby Dixon’s monster romance series. Sci-Fi in Other Media: Adaptations and Recommendations The hosts transition into discussing sci-fi in other media, particularly film and television. They reference the ongoing Silo series and compare its dystopian elements to works like Blake Crouch’s Wayward Pines. Meaghan shares her thoughts on the Alien film franchise, admitting she’s new to many of its sequels. The pair humorously critique the series’ ups and downs, including the divisive Prometheus prequels. The episode also touches on notable sci-fi adaptations and their impact: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch was recently adapted into a TV series. Man in the High Castle adapted for Amazon Prime. The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield blends Cold War intrigue with space exploration. The hosts express excitement about revisiting sci-fi classics and exploring lesser-known gems. They encourage listeners to explore Fully Booked’s website for related articles and reviews from contributors. Looking Ahead with Enthusiasm As the episode concludes, Meaghan and Arthur emphasize the importance of embracing new experiences. They acknowledge that while the month of sci-fi exploration is a departure from their usual fare, it presents an opportunity for growth and discovery. The duo encourages listeners to join them on this journey, whether through reading, watching, or engaging with the content on their website and social media platforms. The hosts’ banter, combined with their genuine curiosity and enthusiasm, sets the tone for an exciting year ahead. With a mix of humor, insight, and personal anecdotes, the episode invites listeners to explore the vast possibilities of sci-fi and its many intersections with other genres. This time, we covered the final installment of Science Seal Delivered Summer for 2024, diving into "Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters". Here's a synopsis of the ideas and insights we discussed on our podcast. If you haven't tuned in yet, we'd love for you to join us and become a part of the conversation! What We Liked Norman's Character Development: We absolutely adored seeing Norman step up as the marital mentor to Oliver. His growth throughout the series has been remarkable, and his easy and sincere advice made those scenes shine. Normalization of Therapy: Both of us appreciated how the movie normalized therapy for healthy relationships. The depiction of Shane, Oliver, Rita, and Norman going through therapy sessions made it clear that seeking help is a healthy and necessary step for any relationship. Sweet, Small Moments: Several little moments made us smile—from Norman's adorable comment about the sonogram picture to Shane and Oliver's flirty interaction post-honeymoon. These touches gave the film warmth and humor. What We Wished For Character Consistency: There were a few moments that felt out of character, especially Oliver's unempathetic interaction with Charlie. It seemed like an entirely different writer had come in an...
A Note from James:I'm so excited. I'm like a fanboy of my favorite TV show of the year. It's called Dark Matter, and it's on Apple TV Plus. I don't know how to describe it. It's a thriller, it's drama, it's science fiction, and it's emotional. It's just a well-written show. Every episode's a cliffhanger, and it's based on one of my favorite novels, Dark Matter, by one of my favorite novelists, Blake Crouch. Blake was also involved in writing the TV show. Blake agreed to come on the podcast, and we talk all things writing, thrillers, Dark Matter, TV, publishing, and he answered all my questions about my favorite show and his writing process. Here's Blake.Episode Description:In this episode, James Altucher interviews Blake Crouch, the mastermind behind the novel and TV adaptation of "Dark Matter." They discuss the intricacies of writing thrillers, the challenge of adapting a beloved novel for the screen, and the science and emotion behind the concept of the multiverse. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit lobundverriss.substack.com

Whirling around the league at a breakneck speed that's surprisingly easy to follow, you'll be set for the momentous occasion of a new league year in less time than a boring Sopranos episode (they're Italian, a crime is gonna happen, pasta, we get it man just talk about something else for once. Give me a show where I don't already know what's going to happen like Wayward Pines).

Ultimately, we believe in one thing: spirituality is real but the tools we use to define it may not be magical at all.The Superficial Spirit is hosted by Peter Breeze, a former club kid and underground pop star who found success in queer clubs across Canada and America. Blake Crouch is a bestselling novelist and screenwriter. He is the author of the novel, Dark Matter, for which he is writing the screenplay for Sony Pictures. His international-bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy was adapted into a television series for FOX, executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, that was Summer 2015's #1 show. His latest book, Recursion, was a bestseller which is also being adapted by Netflix. We loved talking to Blake and hearing about how it was a decision to stop writing “small” stories that kickstarted what appeared to be a failing career as a novelist. That first big story was Pines, and since then he has had success after success. We also hear about how his unique and complicated ideas develop into novels, and the difficult process that goes into them.Links:Buy Blake's books now!Visit Blake's websiteWatch Wayward PinesThe Page One Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. Depressing. Just plain depressing. Right off the bat, we're introduced to two men. Reggie, a husband of 47 years who enjoyed staying stoned. And honestly, he may have some mental illness. Anne, his wife, respects his choices, but she disapproves. Then there's Dennis, the hustler who lives in his van while he's searching for a rich woman upon whom he can prey. If you ever saw The Stepford Wives or Wayward Pines, then you'll better understand how this documentary struck me. It's as though all these thousands of people are, as one woman described it, "living in a bubble." Thirty-five minutes in and I'm overcome with a strong sense of loneliness. Reggie is going online telling people who he got arrested because he had THC and some cocaine. Anne, his wife, is puzzled by his increasingly odd behavior. She's sitting down with another old man, a psychologist. She doesn't quite know what to do. Over and over I see old people behaving foolishly. Some, hanging on for dear life, to youth, long gone. I watch them do things I rather doubt they ever did when they were young. And I'm wondering, "If they didn't enjoy doing those things when they were young, I wonder why they do them now?" I don't know. But I do look at my own life - and my growing older - and realize I don't even think about doing things I did or may have done when I was younger. I'm not interested in hanging onto youth, ignoring the fact that I'm now a 64-year-old man. "Growing old gracefully." I keep thinking about what that looks like and realize it's not the same for everybody. But I've got a pretty clear vision of it for myself. And this ain't it. There are no kids. It's a retirement community. It's gated, but the roads are public and the gates mostly serve to slow traffic down while a greeter waves at the folks who drive through. Meanwhile, Dennis, the hustler, grows more down and out. He's 81. Wanted for an outstanding DUI. He fled the warrant and dashed off to Florida. Now he's desperate. Searching, unsuccessfully, for people who will help him out. Old friends and acquaintances seem to know Dennis is still the hustler he's always been. He confesses his goal was to die poor and admits, "Here I am. I'm poor." There's nothing worse than an old leech! I find myself battling harsh feelings against this man - this very despicable man. I wonder how many people he's taken advantage of during his lifetime. A life dedicated to lies, deceit, dishonesty, and manipulation. He's the epitome of a person devoted only to himself. Devoid of character and integrity. I rather doubt he's ever done the right thing in his life. Lynn, the golf cart salesman, comes into the scene well into the show and we finally are introduced to a person who enjoys life. And smiles a lot. We watch him show Barbara, a Boston widow who desperately misses her home state. Lynn pulls her out of her funk without even knowing it. They laugh and cut up while playing mini-golf. It's a rare glimpse of people who are enjoying life. Up to this point, most of the scenes are sad. I'm an hour into the show with 15 minutes remaining. And find myself depressed knowing the world is full of people - of all ages - who are still so far away from figuring it out. And about the time I'm prepared to just hit STOP, Reggie admits he's ready to stop using weed and other drugs. He's still a bizarre character who I find somewhat insufferable, but at least I feel better for Anne. She's at least no longer stuck with a man determined to stay high all the time. Meanwhile, Lynn and Barbara attend a Parrothead event where Dennis is a fixture. Never mind that quite a few folks are making complete fools of themselves. Barbara is enjoying herself until she see's Lynn dancing with another woman. Her countenance falls immediately as she thought she might have some future with Lynn. You never get the idea that Lynn misled her, but she's lonely and looking for love. And Dennis? Well,
Actor talked about his role as Jason Higgins in the M. Night Shyamalan series.
This episode is not for the unprepared. Mary and Renee dive into The City of Ember, and much like Lina and Doon, they end up somewhere unexpected by the end. Join us on a journey into an underground society that still hasn't figured out fire after 241 years but has functioning greenhouses. Our two child laborers/heroes have to discover the way out of their dying city before food runs out—but they have to contend with a selfish mayor and naive citizens along the way (not to mention solve the mystery that is a candle and decipher the meaning of the word “boat”). It's a journey that starts with an Attack on Titan OVA, through references to Wayward Pines and Doctor Who, and concludes in fanfiction. Simone Missick made history for her powerful and extraordinary portrayal in Marvel's Luke Cage as TV's first black female superhero, Misty Knight, and has captivated audiences ever since. Touted as the show's "breakout star," Missick was featured as one of People magazine's "Ones to Watch" prior to the first season premiere. She continued to portray this impactful character in other shows, such as The Defenders and Iron Fist. Simone's other television appearances include CBS All Access' Tell Me a Story, the political thriller Scandal, Wayward Pines, and Showtime's crime drama Ray Donovan. Also, she starred in the comedy short Voicemail, for which she was nominated for the Best Actor Award at the NBC Universal Shorts Festival. Later this year, Simone will star in the second season of the series Altered Carbon, opposite Anthony Mackie. Previously, Simone filmed the lead in the independent film Jinn, directed by Nijla Mumin, which premiered at SXSW Festival in 2018. The film tells the deeply intimate and timely story of a woman who converts to Islam and how this affects her family dynamic. Outside of film and television, Simone's impressive theater work includes the Signature's Paradise Blue, written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Center Theatre Group's Citizen: An American Lyric. Based on a book of poetry by Claudia Rankine, adapted for the stage by Fountain Theatre co-artistic director Stephen Sachs, and directed by Shirley Jo Finney, "Citizen" fuses poetry, prose, movement, music and the video image in a provocative stage adaptation. Also, Missick starred as Sweet Tea in The Road Weeps, the Well Runs Dry at the L.A. Theatre Center, which earned her an NAACP Theater Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2014. Blake Crouch talks his latest book "Recursion" Memory makes reality. That's what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome—a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. Neuroscientist Helena Smith already understands the power of memory. It's why she's dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious moments of our pasts. If she succeeds, anyone will be able to re-experience a first kiss, the birth of a child, the final moment with a dying parent. As Barry searches for the truth, he comes face-to-face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease—a force that attacks not just our minds but the very fabric of the past. And as its effects begin to unmake the world as we know it, only he and Helena, working together, will stand a chance at defeating it. But how can they make a stand when reality itself is shifting and crumbling all around them?
