The future of medicine is being shaped by technology, and few companies are pushing the boundaries like GSK. In this episode, I sit down with Christopher Austin, Head of Research Technologies at GSK, to explore how AI, data science, and cutting-edge digital capabilities are revolutionizing drug discovery and development. Chris shares how GSK is harnessing vast datasets, AI-driven insights, and genetic validation to speed up the identification of promising drug targets. We discuss how computational biology and machine learning are dramatically reducing the time it takes to develop new treatments—sometimes cutting discovery timelines in half. From selecting the right molecular designs to improving patient identification for clinical trials, technology is streamlining the entire R&D process, increasing success rates, and ultimately bringing life-saving medicines to patients faster. We also dive into the role of generative AI in modeling diseases, designing antibodies, and optimizing clinical trials. With AI now shaping everything from drug formulation to patient recruitment, we explore what this means for the future of medicine and the ethical considerations that come with such rapid advancements. How will AI-driven drug discovery change the pharmaceutical industry in the next decade? What challenges remain in integrating these new technologies into traditional research models? And what does all of this mean for patients and the future of healthcare? Tune in to hear how GSK is leading the charge in transforming medicine through technology.

When Christopher Austin asked to interview me for GrassRoot Ohio, I said YES to to my fellow actor/activist friend - this is Chris' show & I'm in the hot seat! Shout out to Curtain Players Performance - The Laramie Project! Carolyn Harding with Christopher Austin, fellow artist/activist and colleague. Christopher Austin graduated from Otterbein University with a major in Theatre and received his Master's Degree in Pastoral and Professional Counseling from Methodist Theological School. He has received awards for his theatrical performances and completed his first feature film “Things Are Tough All Over,” directed by local film maker Chris Bournea. Christopher has worked in the field of counseling and social work for 6 years and has received recognition and awards for his work in the field. He is active in the Columbus community with the goal helping people find their voice of empowerment through the arts, volunteering in religious and community outreach, and social activism. In June, 2020, I interviewed Chris on GrassRoot Ohio. His petition to take down the Christopher Columbus statue in front of the Columbus City Hall, was the straw that broke the camels back, after years of activists' work to bring this symbol of trauma down. But I first got to know Chris from our other shared world - the Arts. In November, 2012, we were in a theatrical production of To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Mark Mann. Chris played the role of Tom Robbins, the man falsely accused and convicted of rape by a white woman. I played Ms. Stephanie, the nosey neighbor of Atticus Finch- white, privileged, complicit, racist. In July, 2019, Chris was cast as the lead character in “Things are Tough All Over”, an independent feature film by Chris Bournea, and I was cast as the school principal, this time an ally. Two months ago Chris asked me if he could interview me for GrassRoot Ohio. I was taken back, a bit flummoxed, with everything going on in our world…. But I said yes to Chris and so here we are. This is Christopher Austins' show, and I'm in the hot seat. Friday 5 pm broadcast on WGRN.org, GrassRoot Ohio now airs on Sunday's, at 2pm on WCRSFM.org, 92.7/98.3 FM Columbus, and at 4pm on WEJP-LP, 107.1 FM, Wheeling/Moundsville WV. After nearly two decades at the NIH and almost 10 years as founding director of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), Christopher Austin is crossing over to the ‘dark side', joining Boston-based Flagship Pioneering, the highly respected bioplatforms innovation company. He's one of Biopharma's true visionaries, with an expert's knowledge at the highest levels of government funded NIH research, translational innovation, and industry commercialization. In this podcast, we touch on the litany of proposals emanating from the US congress including international reference pricing and APRA-H, the proposed DARPA of healthcare. Chris Austin approaches the increasingly caustic debates around discovery, R&D, and pricing with a nuance and subtle understanding that is truly unique in its depth and wisdom, articulating why the U.S. ecosystem from the NIH through to commercial Biopharma has been both successful and effective. Chris provides a background to many R&D breakthroughs with which he's been personally involved, whilst explaining in detail how the US innovation engine works, and what makes it tick. We also outline how well-intentioned proposals such as price controls and IP waivers put the US ecosystem, and the future of drug discovery, at risk. Chris Austin graduated with a degree in biology from Princeton in 1982, and received his MD at Harvard Medical School. He completed his clinical training in internal medicine and neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Why are the myths of the Indian Great Goddess, Durgā, found in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa framed by myths glorifying the Sun, Sūrya? And why do these glorifications mirror each other in both content and form? In exploring these questions, this book argues for an ideological ecosystem at work in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa privileging worldly (pravṛtti) values, of which Indian kings, the Goddess (Devī), the Sun (Sūrya) and sage Mārkaṇḍeya himself are paragons. Join us in the “flip interview” as as your New Books Network Hindu Studies host Raj Balkaran (University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies) is interviewed on his new book, The Goddess and the Sun in Indian Myth: Power, Preservation and Mirrored Māhātmyas in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa (Routledge, 2020) by guest-interviewer Christopher Austin. “Are we going to require the same level of evidence for a vaccine … before it is approved? Could we potentially begin to use it at the same time we're still studying it? Normally we would never do that, but it's this kind of translational innovation that this COVID crisis is making not only possible, but needed.” How do simple scientific observations – from the laboratory, clinic, or the community – become therapies and cures? It's called translation, and since 2012, one of the 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health has been dedicated to doing just that. As director of NCATS, Christopher Austin oversees a vast ecosystem of research, analysis, and innovation to accelerate cures and therapies to those who need them most. Austin sees the current pandemic as a turning point for greater data sharing and team science. “We are seeing that on a scale I have never seen across NIH, across government agencies, and with the pharmaceutical and biotech industry,” he tells Mike. “We have a singular moment when everyone realizes the need for faster cures and the limitations of the current system to deliver them.”

This is the first sustained study of an important figure in Hindu narrative, one largely obscure to readers and scholars alike: Kṛṣṇa's son Pradyumna. In Pradyumna: Lover, Magician, and Scion of the Avatara (Oxford University Press, 2019), Christopher Austin traces the evolution of Pradyumna's persona, placing it in historical context, across its iterations over time. He highlights the very gendered features of Pradyumna's Oedipal tale. For information about your host Raj Balkaran’s background, see rajbalkaran.com/academia Learn more about your ad choices. Utilising recent advances in developmental biology, Christopher Austin argues that the hylomorphic framework is an empirically adequate and conceptually rich explanatory schema with which to model the nature of organisms. Although contemporary metaphysics has recently undergone a neo-Aristotelian revival wherein dispositions, or capacities are now commonplace in empirically grounded ontologies, being routinely utilised in theories of causality and modality, a central Aristotelian concept has yet to be given serious attention – the doctrine of hylomorphism. The reason for this is clear: while the Aristotelian ontological distinction between actuality and potentiality has proven to be a fruitful conceptual framework with which to model the operation of the natural world, the distinction between form and matter has yet to similarly earn its keep. In this talk, I offer a first step toward showing that the hylomorphic framework is up to that task. To do so, I return to the birthplace of that doctrine - the biological realm. Utilising recent advances in developmental biology, I argue that the hylomorphic framework is an empirically adequate and conceptually rich explanatory schema with which to model the nature of organisms.
